Colors announces new primetime show ‘Sirf Tum’ premiering 15 Nov

Mumbai: Colors has announced a new fiction show “Sirf Tum,” which will premiere on 15 November and air on weekdays at 8 p.m.

Produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilms, the show features Vivan Dsena alongside Eisha Singh in the lead. “From capturing the beautiful locales of Dehradun, bringing talents like Vivian Dsena and Eisha Singh onboard, to creating such a powerful narrative, the entire team has worked relentlessly on every minute detail to capture the essence of this love story and make it appealing for the viewers,” stated producer Rashmi Sharma.

Set in the beautiful locales of Dehradun, against the backdrop of a medical college, “Sirf Tum” highlights the nuances of a complicated relationship between its two lead characters Ranveer and Suhani. “Ranveer is an extremely intriguing character as there are many different shades to him. He is a differentiated hero as his behaviour towards Suhani is anything but conventional – their chemistry reflects a very different side of love,” said actor Vivian Dsena on his role.

“I was looking out for some uniqueness and that’s when I landed the role of Suhani. Suhani is an extremely mellow character with her simple girl next door aura and her meekish but strong personality,” said actor Eisha Singh. “She is graceful, demure and yet is rooted in strong ideologies stemming from family values. Her innocence makes her very striking and unassuming.”

The show also has Sonyaa Ayodhya, Eva Shirali, Sanjay Batra and Nimai Bali in supporting roles.

“Love stories are widely appreciated and resonate strongly with the viewers, and ‘Sirf tum’ is one such story of two opposite personalities, values, and worlds,” Viacom18 head of Hindi mass entertainment and kids TV network Nina Elavia Jaipuria. “With this show, we further aim to strengthen our weekday prime time and reinforce our promise to keep the viewers engaged, entertained with new and unique stories.”

“Today, we are enthralled to recreate the magic of love with Rashmi Sharma Telefilms, who have helmed several strong and beautiful narratives for us in the past,” Viacom18’s chief content officer – Hindi mass entertainment Manisha Sharma. “‘Sirf Tum’ is a unique love story of two individuals – Ranveer and Suhani, whose personalities and lives are poles apart but fate brings them together. Viewers are going to enjoy watching love, romance, passion and drama in this vibrant new love story.”

Zee TV announces two new primetime shows

Mumbai: Zee TV has announced two new shows “Aggar Tum Na Hote” and “Tere Bina Jiya Jaaye Na” that will premiere on 9 November. “Aggar Tum Na Hote” will air every Monday to Friday at 10:30 p.m and “Tere Bina Jiya Jaaye Na” will air between 10 and 11 p.m.

“Our upcoming show – ‘Aggar Tum Na Hote’ explores an unusual dynamic between its lead protagonists where a dedicated nurse becomes the last ray of hope for a mentally unstable young man after even the best of doctors give up on him,” said Zee TV business head Aparna Bhosle. “Does her unwavering determination to cure him stem from a connection they share in the past? Viewers will have to watch the show to find out! We hope to strengthen our late primetime band with two new offerings ‘Aggar Tum Na Hote’ and ‘Tere Bina Jiya Jaaye Na’ between 10 and 11 p.m.”

The show tells the story of a mentally unstable, rich, young man whose only ray of hope is his nurse who refuses to give up on him after even the senior-most doctors have thrown up their hands. Himanshu Soni has been roped to play the role of Abhimanyu Pandey who will be joined by co-star Simaran Kaur who will play the character of Niyati.

“’Aggar Tum Na Hote’ is all about having that one person in life that doesn’t give up on you, even if everyone else does,” said the show producers Jatin Sethi, Mahesh Pandey, and Piyush Gupta. “It is sometimes these relentlessly optimistic motivators and support systems that help us come out and tide over our challenges. So, we have a very interesting dynamic between our two lead protagonists which should give us a fantastic canvas for storytelling.”

“To be honest, when I was approached for the role, I was quite taken aback by the story because while we’ve seen a few films on mentally unstable people, there aren’t too many TV shows that come to mind,” said Himanshu Soni. “My character has an impenetrable depth with layers that viewers will gradually peel and get to see over a period of time.”

“Niyati’s character has quite an intense touch to it since it is a blend of a zestful personality alongside being a responsible, care-giving nurturer,” said Simaran Kaur. “Having an optimistic, pragmatic approach to problems is something both Niyati and I (Simaran) have in common. The show has a beautiful story to narrate, and I hope I am able to bring it alive for the audiences in the most authentic manner.”

  • News X strengthening its editorial team

News X strengthening its editorial team

MUMBAI: Well known anchor on Headlines Today, Rahul Shivshankar, is packing his bags back to his favourite news channel – News X – with a mission in mind. From 4 September, he will be seen as managing editor with the channel and will be hosting the primetime show. Diptosh Majumdar, former National affairs editor with DNA, also joins the team in the same capacity.

Shivshankar has years of experience. He was associated with News X as editorial director for a year between February 2011 and 2012 and six years with Times Now before that. He was also one of the members of the core team that launched Headlines in 2003. “I am emotionally involved with News X and my plan is to consolidate and give the channel a new direction and focus, which I have successfully done for Headlines Today as well,” says Shivshankar. He will be filling a vacant position.

Majumdar has been political affairs editor with CNN-IBN and editorial director with News X in 2010 after which he left for DNA and now he’s back with News X. Recently, News X was acquired by India News. Financial constraints at the channel had led to Shivshankar leaving for Headlines but now since it seems stable he is back with it. One of the things Shivshankar plans to do is build the weekend news programming. This is one affinity to a channel!

Three months ago, Priya Sehgal joined them as political editor from India Today magazine.

When the whole industry seems to be laying people off, News X seems to be doing the opposite. More people are expected to join the channel in the coming months.

  • Diya aur Baati hum: Two years on, the flame continues to burn bright

Diya aur Baati hum: Two years on, the flame continues to burn bright

MUMBAI: An educated girl with big aspirations is married off to an illiterate boy from an orthodox family is not something out-of-the box. We all have heard, read or seen such stories year after year. But what is it about Star’s primetime show – Diya aur Baati hum – that has caught everyone’s fancy?

Prompt comes the reply from Star’s programming head (fiction) Danish Khan that there are various aspects which have led to the success of the show that completes two years on 29 August. “The most important thing about the show is that even though it is set in a small town, it has broken the stereotype that one cannot pursue his/her dreams after marriage.”

Khan goes on to give the credit to the strong and evolving story and the actors for integrating well with all the elements, “The writers and producers have been able to keep the horse running for us. The story is so simple yet day-after-day it has been able to connect with its audience. Even the actors have portrayed the characters so well. They are reliving their lives as those characters.”

Agreeing with Khan, Shashi Sumeet Productions (which is producing the show) founder director Sumeet Mittal adds, “As an inspirational story of a halwai (sweet shop owner) wanting to make sure his wife becomes an IPS officer, it was amazing how the audience accepted our show. Furthermore, the extremely relatable characters have helped give this show a sense of realism to which our audiences can connect.”

And the numbers are proof enough of that. The drama series, which is based in Pushkar (Rajasthan), has been a consistent No 1 for nearly a year and a half for Star Plus. Its launch ratings of 1.9 TVRs (the metric used nowdays is TVTs) were not oo impressive. But it grew on its audience which took a fancy to it as reflected in the ratings climb to 6.7 TVR (week 34 of last year). A year later in 2013 in week 33, Diya aur Baati has reported TVTs of 11,166 TVT, which is way higher than any other primetime show on the competition. Rival Zee TV’s Pavitra Rishta which airs at the same time slot has a relatively leaner TVT of 4,959 TVTs for the same week, while ratings of shows on other channels don’t even merit a mention.

Industry sources say that adverising commercial air time on Diya aur Baati comes at a high sticker price thanks to its continuing stellar performance and connect with its loyal viewers. “The premium attached to the show is almost 30-40 per cent more than the second ranking show, as per ratings,” says a source.

Any other channel worth its salt would love to replicate the prime time series success. What is that makes Diya aur Baati tick? It’s all about staying true to your roots and understanding why you are making a show and for whom, feels Mittal.  “Having an audience connect doesn’t just mean making a show with good television ratings, but also creating a beautiful amalgamation of what we want and what the audience wants,” he elaborates.

Star Plus vice president (marketing) Nikhil Madhok avers that effective marketing during the show’s high points and brand integrations are something that have worked well for it. “When Suraj went for the ‘Top Chef Competition,’ we got the entire nation to give their best wishes to him. If you look at the recent activation, we got Shahrukh Khan to the show in the ‘Master Quiz’ episode. We do such activities regularly to connect to people,” states Madhok.

The producer of the show doesn’t think retaining stickiness is a cakewalk . “Today, people are spoilt for choice and one has to maintain the connect with audiences for them to keep coming back every day,” says Mittal.

Fiction show audiences on GECs expect high drama. Some of the tools programming and creative folks in channels have been using to keep viewers hooked are generation leaps and unexpected twists and turns in the story plot. “The idea is to the audience guessing and looped-in otherwise there is always another show where they can find drama. Also, it helps the show to stay fresh, all the time,” says a media observer.

To keep freshness going after 500-plus episodes isn’t a difficult task if the entire team is driven to make each episode work, believes Mittal. “We have to treat every episode as a whole and give it equal importance. Each department, from writing to direction to actors, to camera persons each and every member of the crew has to work with the same amount of passion and that’s what will translate into a beautiful episode on screen. I strongly believe that in a daily soap, where your interface with the audience happens every single day, the philosophy that small parts make a whole applies aptly here. We have to see that imagination and execution go hand in hand.”

Lodestar UM’s general manager Hema Malik agrees but adds that it is impossible for a show to keep reigning forever; unless of course the team is able to continually come up with interesting and entertaining elements. “Overall, if a show has been getting good ratings, it means it has a strong storyline and characters which one can relate to. And if at a certain stage the storyline becomes boring or predictable, people will take even less time to get off it than they took to get hooked on to it. It is here that one needs to take up the challenge and bounce back.”

Malik goes on to say that the show portrays the channel’s philosophy Rishta Wahi Soch Nayi perfectly. “Star’s values are very much in the storyline of the show. Hence, it’s a perfect match.”
