Time Warner numbers up on higher subscription, content fees

BENGALURU: Time Warner Inc (Time Warner) reported increase in revenue and operating income due to growth across these parameters by all its businesses-Turner, Home Box Office (HBO) and Warner Bros-for the year and quarter ended 31 December 2017 (FY 2017, the year under review; Q4 2018, the quarter under review). Time Warner’s total revenue for FY 2017 increased by 6.7 per cent to USD 31,271 million from USD 29,318 million in FY 2016. Total revenue expanded by 9.1 per cent year-over year (y-o-y) for Q4 2017 to USD 8,611 million from USD 7,891 million in Q4 2016. Operating income increased by 4.9 per cent in FY 2017 to USD 7,920 million from USD 7,547 million in FY 2016. Operating income in Q4 2018 increased by 12.8 per cent yoy to USD 1,907 million.

The company says in its investor release that revenue in FY 2017 benefitted from increases of 13 per cent (USD752 million) in subscription revenue and 11 per cent (USD74 million) in content and other revenue, partially offset by a decrease of 2 per cent (USD109 million) in advertising revenue. The increase in subscription revenue was due to higher domestic rates and growth at Turner’s international networks, partially offset by lower domestic subscribers. Content and other revenue increased due to higher licensing revenue. The decline in advertising revenue was primarily due to lower delivery at Turner’s domestic entertainment networks and the comparison to Turner’s networks airing the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship and Final Four games in the prior year, partially offset by increase in Turner’s news businesses and growth in its international networks.

Operating income in FY 2017 improved due to the increase in revenue, partially offset by higher expenses, including increased programming and marketing costs. Programming costs grew by 12 per cent primarily due to higher costs related to the first year of Turner’s new agreement with the NBA. The increase in marketing costs was mainly to support original series on Turner’s domestic entertainment networks.

Revenue in Q4 2017 grew due to due to increases of 14 per cent (USD 204 million) in subscription revenue, 32 per cent (USD 55 million) in content and other revenue and 2 per cent (USD 26 million) in advertising revenue. Subscription revenue benefitted from higher domestic rates and growth at Turner’s international networks, partially offset by lower domestic subscribers. Content and other revenue increased primarily due to higher licensing revenue. The increase in advertising revenue was due to higher revenue associated with MLB postseason games and growth at Turner’s international networks, partially offset by a decline at Turner’s news businesses related to the comparison to last year’s US presidential election.

Increase of operating income in Q4 2017 reflected revenue growth partially offset by higher expenses, including increased programming costs. Programming expenses grew by 10 per cent mainly due to higher costs associated with airing MLB post-season games.

Time Warner chairman and chief executive officer Jeff Bewkes said: “We had another very successful year in 2017, achieving our financial goals thanks to the great creative and programming excellence across Time Warner. All three of our operating divisions increased revenue and profits while also investing to capitalize on the growing demand for the most creative and compelling content as well as new ways to deliver it to audiences worldwide. Warner Bros. had its best year ever at the global box office with its films grossing over USD5 billion in box office receipts, led by hits like Wonder Woman, It and Dunkirk, which received eight Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture. Warner Bros. also remains the number 1 supplier of television shows for the broadcast networks, and saw continued growth in games with franchise releases Middle-earth: Shadow of War and Injustice 2.”

Everybody Loves Raymond stars stand-up comedian and Emmy-Award winner Ray Romano. The story revolves around Ray Barone, a successful sportswriter living on Long Island, New York, with his wife Debra (Patricia Heaton) and three kids. But their big happy family gets a bit too big and less happy — when Ray’s meddling parents, Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts), frequently stop by, since they live directly across the street. Brother Robert (Brad Garrett), a divorced police officer, is constantly moving in and out of his parents’ house, and loves to drop by and show his resentment towards Ray’s successful career and happy family life. Dodging Marie’s constant critique of Debra’s cooking, Frank’s witty one-liners and Robert’s dead-pan despair, Ray and Debra just wish someone would ring their doorbell before entering once in a while.

Everybody Loves Raymond was an instant hit abroad and has a huge fan following even in India. While it was being telecast, the show was among Top 5 programs in the prime-time and was watched by over 18 million viewers each week. Further testimony to the success of the show was the fact that the cast members of Everybody Loves Raymond won Primetime Emmy Awards for their roles in the series.

In order to sustain the buzz around the property, Romedy Now will launch a digital campaign in February. Seeing that ELR can alternatively be termed as a ‘Family Comedy’, the core thought revolves around families spending their time together with Romedy Now. The channel will use #FamilyTimeWithRomedy as a sub-plug and build content and activities around how the channel is the most sought after when it comes to family viewing. Using this, it will explore different traits/habits/likes/dislikes of each family. It will use instances occurring in the show and tie it back with relatable scenes and stills from the show. The campaign will be executed on Facebook and Twitter.

Everybody Loves Raymond is yet another show that weaves into Romedy Now’s philosophy of bringing love and laughter to the Indian television viewers. With How I Met Your Mother, Gilmore Girls, Hot in Cleveland, the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Romedy Now is undoubtedly the happiest place on TV and the ultimate destination to love and laughter!

  • FX and FX HD to air ‘House M.D.’

FX and FX HD to air ‘House M.D.’

MUMBAI: FX, the English entertainment channel, is known for showcasing some of the most iconic and critically-acclaimed edge-of-seat content. Upping its game this New Year, the channel is all-set to premiere one of the greatest dramas of all time House M.D. Premiering on 13 January 2016; the show will air on FX and FX HD starting with the very first season, Season 1 down to its final Season 8 every day from Monday to Friday at 10 pm.

House M.D. is a highly acclaimed American medical drama television series. Doctor Gregory House played by famous British actor, writer, director, musician, singer, comedian, and author, Hugh Laurie. Prior to House, Hugh Laurie had made his mark as an actor and comedian with Fry & Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster and few big screen appearances including Stuart Little. But it was through House that he skyrocketed to fame.  Doctor House is the one and only character on global television who everyone across the world loves to hate. This is because he is brilliant – a pure genius and extremely charming in his own fundamentally arrogant and cranky way. He is not just any ordinary doctor fighting off patients’ illnesses. He takes up medical cases that only prove to be the rarest and most interesting to him. Gregory House is considered to be one of the most well written characters of a television series and House M.D. went on to become the most watched television series globally in 2008. The show won numerous renowned awards including five Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, a Peabody Award, and nine People’s Choice Awards.

The series trails Doctor House as he leads an elite medical team to solve bizarre illnesses and save lives despite his own constant physical pain. In the series’ first episode of the very first season, Doctor Gregory House and his choicest team of young medical experts rush to save the life of a kindergarten teacher who starts speaking gibberish and passes out in front of her class. What initially looks like a possible case of brain tumour, the patient does not respond to treatment leaving House and his team to engage in a risky trail-and-error approach to her case. Will House be able to find out what is wrong and in time?

  • TV Academy makes major changes to Emmy Awards rules

TV Academy makes major changes to Emmy Awards rules

MUMBAI: The Television Academy has passed a group of new Primetime Emmy Awards rules, which reflect the increasingly varied and expanding television landscape.

Television Academy Chairman Bruce Rosenblum said, “We are thrilled to announce that our Board of Governors and senior industry executives have taken meaningful time to address, in a forward thinking manner, many of our existing rules and procedures. Our over 17,000 voting members represents a dramatically changing television industry and we want to continue to make sure we honor their creativity in the most relevant and fair ways possible. As our growing membership creates and produces more content for ever-changing platforms, today’s changes in the rules and procedures are vital. We’re sure that in coming years we will continue to evolve our rules as our dynamic industry grows.”

    The changes include:

Expansion of Final Round Voting: In an effort to increase member participation in the voting process, and to take advantage of the Academy’s extension of online voting to both rounds, all voters eligible to vote in a category’s nominating round are now eligible to vote in that category’s final round, so long as they meet two additional requirements: much like the former Blue Ribbon panel process, voters must watch the required submitted material online and attest to no specific conflicts of interest with the nominees.

Expansion of Nominees for “Comedy” and “Drama” Series Categories: Due to the dramatic increase in series production, the number of nominees for “Comedy” and “Drama” series has been increased from six to seven.

Definition of a “Comedy” and “Drama” Series: To clarify the difference between the “Comedy” and “Drama” series categories, series with episodes of 30 minutes or less are defined as a “Comedy”; those with episodes of more than 30 minutes are presumed to be a “Drama.”

Producers may formally petition a new Academy industry panel to consider their series’ eligibility in the alternative category. This nine-member panel will include five industry leaders appointed by the Television Academy Chairman and four appointees from the Board of Governors. A two-thirds vote of this Industry Panel is required for petition approval.

All programs entering the competition this year will be grouped according to these new definitions.

Definition of “Series” and “Limited Series”: “Mini-Series” will be changed to “Limited Series” and defined as programs of two or more episodes with a total running time of at least 150 program minutes that tell a complete, non-recurring story, and do not have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons. “Comedy” and “Drama” Series will continue to be defined as programs with a minimum of six episodes which have an ongoing storyline, theme and main characters presented under the same title and with continuity of production supervision.

Producers may formally petition for review by the aforementioned industry panel to change category eligibility.

Definition of “Guest Actor”: Only performers appearing in less than 50% of a program’s episodes are now eligible to submit in the “Guest Actor” category.

Split of Variety Series category: The Variety Series category is now split – Outstanding Variety Talk, to be awarded during the Primetime Emmy telecast, and Outstanding Variety Sketch, to be included in the Creative Arts Emmy program.
