    Amazon to launch linear TV channel for Prime Video members in Germany

    MUMBAI: Traditional television is far from dead as Amazon makes a decisive move into linear broadcasting with the launch of a new TV channel called Prime, exclusively for its Prime Video subscribers in Germany and Austria.

    Set to debut on 17 April 2025, the channel represents Amazon’s strategic push to bridge the gap between conventional television and streaming services, according to Christoph Schneider, country director of Prime Video Deutschland.

    PRIME VIDEO GERMANYSpeaking to German industry publication DWDL, Schneider explained the channel would serve as “an easy entry point into our Prime Video universe” for viewers who prefer the curated experience of traditional television rather than navigating through extensive on-demand libraries.

    The programming schedule will feature Prime Video originals including Reacher, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout, alongside live sports coverage of the UEFA Champions League for German viewers and Wimbledon tennis for both German and Austrian audiences.

    Prime will maintain a distinct advantage over traditional television by featuring “shorter and less frequent” commercial breaks, whilst still adopting familiar TV-style advertising models that will be open to standard industry measurement.

    The channel will launch with the premiere of the first two episodes of comedy series LOL: Last One Laughing at 20:15 CEST on its opening night, marking Amazon’s latest effort to enhance its comprehensive streaming ecosystem that already encompasses subscription, ad-supported and transactional video-on-demand services.

    MUMBAI: Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has stepped into unfamiliar territory, swapping the cricket field for the mystical world of Aashram. In a humorous crossover for Aashram season three part two, now streaming for free on Amazon MX Player, Chahal seeks divine intervention but the results are far from what he imagined.

    In the video, Chahal, fully kitted out with pads, helmet, and bat, approaches Bobby Deol’s enigmatic Baba Nirala with one request to become an opening batsman. True to his style, Baba grants the wish with a resounding Tathastu! However, instead of taking the crease, Chahal finds himself opening everything but an innings water bottles, lunchboxes, and even jammed doors. Left bewildered, he sighs, Accha opener bana diya, Baba. Meanwhile, Baba, ever the mysterious figure, remarks, “No one leaves my Aashram empty-handed.”

    Chahal said, “I’ve always joked about opening the batting. This time, Baba made it happen just not in the way I expected!”

    MUMBAI: Prime Video has announced the launch of its latest Indian original series Dupahiya marking the production debut of Bombay Film Cartel, the company announced today. The series will premiere on 7 March 2025 on the platform. 

    The first production venture from Bombay Film Cartel, founded by Shubh Shivdasani and Salona Bains Joshi, it has been scripted by writers Chirag and Avinash, who have developed what Prime Video describes as “a fresh, authentic and rooted story.” 

    The trailer kicks off in the fictional village of Dhadakpur—also known as the Belgium of Bihar – that is on the cusp of celebrating being crime-free for 25 years. But chaos strikes when a never-seen-before motorbike, that was purchased as a wedding gift gets stolen seven days before the ceremony! With the fate of the wedding left hanging, the journey the family and the ex-lover of the bride take to find the Dupahiya forms the heart of this comedy that deals with the hopes and aspirations of simple people.

    Sonam Nair has directed the series. With a perfect blend of humour, chaos, and intrigue, the Original series is brought to life by a highly talented and versatile cast, featuring Gajraj Rao, Renuka Shahane, Bhuvan Arora, Sparsh Shrivastava, Shivani Raghuvanshi, and Yashpal Sharma in the lead roles.

    Prime Video India head of Indian originals Nikhil Madhok emphasised the platform’s commitment to nurturing new talent. 

    “At Prime Video, we are constantly looking to back new voices and talent,” said Madhok. “Shubh and Salona have been incredible partners through this journey, and we are proud that ‘Dupahiya’ is their first production.”
    Madhok praised director Sonam Nair’s execution of the series, describing it as “warm and funny.”

    MUMBAI: Aneesha Mukhopadhaya has joined Netflix India as consumer insights lead in Mumbai. She moves from Amazon, where she served as research and insights lead for Prime Video for nearly three years.

    Prior to Amazon, Mukhopadhaya spent over eight years at Unilever in various roles, most recently as global homecare lead for CMI Hive. She previously worked with Kantar as insights director at IMRB International.

    A consumer insight specialist with over 15 years’ experience, Mukhopadhaya brings expertise in research, analytics and brand strategy across FMCG and entertainment sectors.

    MUMBAI: Middle-earth is calling once more! Prime Video has confirmed that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is returning for a third season, with pre-production already underway. Filming is set to begin this spring at Shepperton Studios in the UK, marking a new chapter in Amazon’s most-watched fantasy saga. With over 170 million viewers worldwide, the series remains a powerhouse for Prime Video, driving record-breaking new subscriptions.

    Returning to shape the next season’s visual spectacle is Charlotte Brändström, now stepping in as an executive producer and director, alongside Sanaa Hamri and new addition Stefan Schwartz. Brändström, known for her work on The Witcher and The Man in the High Castle, directed multiple episodes in The Rings of Power’s first two seasons. Hamri, a veteran of The Wheel of Time and Empire, is back after directing several episodes in Season Two. Schwartz, whose credits include The Boys, Luther, and The Walking Dead, joins the directorial lineup for the first time.

    The Rings of Power has become a defining title for Prime Video, boasting one of the platform’s biggest debuts and consistently drawing massive global engagement.     MUMBAI: Chaupal OTT, the Punjabi streaming service, has expanded its reach by launching on Amazon Prime Video Channels in New Zealand. Prime members in New Zealand can now access Chaupal’s content library, including Punjabi movies, web series, and short films, as an add-on subscription through Prime Video.The price: NZ $5.99 a month. 

    The launch marks Chaupal’s continued international expansion and strengthens its partnership with Amazon’s streaming platform. The service offers viewers access to its original content alongside a curated selection of Punjabi entertainment.

    This development follows collaboration between the Chaupal and Amazon teams to bring the regional streaming service to New Zealand audiences, further expanding the availability of Punjabi content in international markets.
