    MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s radio address Mann ki Baat has reportedly got mega bucks for the All India Radio (AIR). Apart from getting millions of listeners, the programme, according to the information and broadcasting ministry, has fetched a gross revenue of over Rs 4.78 crore through advertisements.

    Prasar Bharati has informed that, as far as AIR is concerned, only the radio broadcast of Mann ki Baat is monetised and other platforms such as live streaming or app-based service are not, said the minister of state for information and broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore.

    Overall, the AIR registered a revenue growth in 2015-16 of Rs 447.76 crore from Rs 435.1 crore in 2014-15. Mann Ki Baat has also been visually adapted for telecast on Doordarshan channels.

    AIR, owned by the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, so far aired 26 episodes of Mann Ki Baat. The show was launched in October 2014 and the broadcaster started monetising it by December. It is reported that AIR generates close to Rs 1 crore from Mann Ki Baat.

    According to a report in Livemint, the broadcaster has designated a total of seven minutes (five minutes before the show and two minutes after the show) for commercial revenue from Mann Ki Baat. It also airs self-promotional advertisements in those seven minutes.

    The report suggests that AIR charges an ad rate of Rs 2 lakh per 10 seconds of advertising for the PM’s radio address.

    NEW DELHI: The much-debated net neutrality issue got some additional boost from the Indian minister of electronics & information technology and law & justice Ravi Shankar Prasad when he said that the government favours non-discriminatory access to the Internet.

    “We are strong advocates of non-discriminatory access to Internet and democratization of Internet governance,” Prasad said yesterday while dwelling on the issue of net neutrality and digital dividends to average citizens.

    However, he didn’t elaborate on the net neutrality (and OTT) issue, which is being studied by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in totality for possible guidelines and regulations. TRAI has already undertaken a lengthy consultation process with various stakeholders and its final recommendations are awaited.

    Pointing out that India is home to 270 million smart-phones, a number that’s likely to swell to 500 million in few years time, Prasad said that India doesn’t want to miss out on the digital revolution having missed the industrial revolution.

    Making a case for more efficient bandwidth availability at affordable rates to an average Indian, Prasad said, “Data is the new oil… (and) digital India is ideology neutral, politics neutral and only pro-India.”

    Prasad, who was delivering the inaugural address at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF)-organised “CyFy 2016: Digital Asia & Scripting the New Governance Order” here yesterday evening, asserted if a digital profile of India is drawn it would look something like this: 1.03 billion mobile phones, 1.05 million digital identity (Aadhaar cards) and  400 million internet users, apart from a digital army of young people who have fanned out in rural areas running Common Services Centres at more than 200,000 places.

    Enumerating the various digital initiatives undertaken under the Digital India plan, something that is very dear to Prime Minister Modi, the senior minister opined that the government had undertaken some “path-breaking” programmes.

    “Digital India is for the under-privileged… (and) digital inclusion will come about with digital connect,” the Minister said, adding the government was creating a digital infrastructure for Indians so that citizens could reap digital dividends aplenty.

    Pointing out that a digital India would provide more effective governance and remove socialistic-era licence regime, Prasad said in a few years time India would become a $ 1 trillion digital economy.     

    But the cyber space also brings along many dangers. Emphasising on the importance of precaution, Prasad said, “Governments of all countries have to come together to safeguard their citizens from the threats of cyber crimes.”

    ORF, which annually organises a conference on cyber-related issues, including security and entertainment, is an independent self-sustaining think-tank. Having started in the early 1990s, it has been backed by the now Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries.

    NEW DELHI: A series of promotional videos promoting the idea of constructing toilets in every household in the country was released by the prime minister Narendra Modi. The government is celebrating the Swachh Bharat Week, from September 25- October 2.

    While the movement through promotions is led by the renowned cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, the first message on video has been given by the megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The advertisement campaign has been launched by the ministry of drinking water and sanitation.

    The Big B points out that over 70,000 households have already adopted the idea of constructing a toilet in their homes, and thereafter he encourages all villages to follow suit.

    There are more than one video with Sachin Tendulkar, and various social workers who are actively involved in this task. In fact, Modi, in a tweet, lauded Tendulkar for his involvement in this task to make India defecation-free and for his ‘wise words’.

    Narendra Singh Tomar, minister of rural development, drinking water & sanitation and panchayati raj, said that the ministry has galvanised its BCC (Behaviour Change Communication) and IEC (Information Education Communication) mechanisms to make the advertisements more people-centric. He stressed that it was necessary because IEC/BCC were core interventions for behaviour change and citizen engagement.

    MUMBAI: It’s another feather in ISRO’s cap. The Indian space outfit seems to be going from success to success. Earlier this morning at 9:12 am, its latest mission the PSLV-C35 lifted off immaculately from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Around 17 minutes later, its fourth stage rocket engine was shut off and it launched one of its passengers, the ScatSat 1 satellite, into its orbit at height of 720 km., to the delight of ISRO scientists.

    Currently, the organization is waiting to fire the fourth stage engine again to send the remainder of its seven satellite payload into their orbit at a height of 670 km, between 11:25 and 11:28 am, according to ISRO updates.

    “This is a challenging two-in-one mission which puts India in a unique league of nations having the capability to achieve two different orbits in a single mission,” ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar was quoted as saying.

    Tweeted Prime minister Narendra Modi: “Moment of immense joy and pride for India. Congratulations to isro on successful launch of PSLV-C35/ScatSat1 & 7 co-passenger satellites. Our space scientists keep scripting history. Their innovative zeal has touched the lives of 125 crore Indians & made India proud worldwide.”

    Referring to the Short Films Competition on the theme “Swachh Bharat” announced recently by the Government, he said during his monthly ‘Monthly ki Baat’ on All India Radio that filmmakers no longer needed large studios or sets to shoot a film, and this could be done even on a mobile phone.

    He said the winning entries will be announced in a special felicitation programme to be held in New Delhi on 2 October 2016 which also marks Gandhi Jayanti.

    Entries have been invited by the National Film Development Corporation on behalf of Information & Broadcasting Ministry by 10 September 2016.

    The film can be made in Hindi, English or any of the listed official languages of India.
    The Best Film will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a certificate. Three Second Best Films will be awarded Rs 5 lakh each and six Third Best Films will be awarded Rs 2 lakh each.

    Meanwhile, the NFDC today aired a commercial on Doordarshan where megastar Amitabh Bachchan urged young filmmakers to participate enthusiastically in the Festival. In his characteristic touch of humour, he said he hoped he would be able to go to one of the filmmakers one day to seek a role for himself.
