Evelyn Sharma to match dance steps with Arshad Warsi

MUMBAI: Evelyn Sharma seems to have all the luck by her side. From starting out as a fashionista and graduating to Bollywood success with super hits like Nautanki Saala! and then Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), she’s now turning a new leaf in her career.

Evelyn has been signed by director Neeraj Pathak for Bhaiyyaji Superhit starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Arshad Warsi.

Pitted as the leading lady opposite Arshad, she plays a cute, sexy but traditional Indian girl. But what the actress is most excited about is matching dance steps with him. Apart from being a powerhouse performer, Arshad is well-known for being a great dancer. And Evelyn feels this gives her a chance to hone her dancing skills too. Nowadays, the girl is often spotted at a dance rehearsal hall in Andheri, Mumbai. We wonder if that has something to do with the challenge of dancing with Arshad.

Meanwhile, having bagged a role with various shades, comedy, songs, dance and all, Evelyn is glad to work with director Neeraj Pathak. “He spotted me in YJHD and invited me to his office for a meeting. He compliments me for my talent and thinks I am a quick learner. I feel honoured with the praise,” said the actress.

  • Preity Zinta back with Bhaiyyaji Superhit

Preity Zinta back with Bhaiyyaji Superhit

After doing a cameo with Saif Ali Khan in the US for a film titled Happy Ending, Preity Zinta is back in Mumbai.

She has resumed shooting in India with Neeraj Pathak’s Bhaiyyaji Superhit where in her own words she has a “damned interesting role” opposite Sunny Deol. For the first time, Preity gets to play a bonafide rustic character. And she’s working hard to clean herself of the subtle American twang she has acquired during her frequent visits to the US where her brother lives.

Last seen in her home-production Ishkq In Paris, the film’s failure left Preity disappointed but undeterred.

Preity begins shooting for Bhaiyyaji Superhit in Udaipur this week. She plays a character from rural Uttar Pradesh. Sunny Deol plays her husband.

  • YJHD set to break records at the BO, opens with Rs 61.25 crore

YJHD set to break records at the BO, opens with Rs 61.25 crore

MUMBAI: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) has set the cash registers ringing at the box office with a record-breaking opening day as well as the opening weekend collections. The Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer is on its way to join the illustrious Rs 100 crore club.

The youthful entertainer is certainly the biggest opener for 2013 thus far by a mile. The film released in over 3,000 screens in the country with an earth-shattering response and its occupancy ranging between 95 per cent and 100 per cent in both single screens and multiplexes on Friday. With its positive reviews and good word of mouth, the movie showed a very good jump in its business on Saturday and Sunday and has been received well by the critics and audiences alike.

The mammoth sized promotional events, guest appearances and performances on TV shows, brand associations and the works have done exceedingly well for it.

Kapoor has created a solid fan following among the youth and second time writer-director, Ayan Mukerji, helped keep his fans happy.

An extensive solo release backed by enhanced admission rates, has certainly accelerated the film‘s collection to rake in a handsome Rs 61.25 crore. The practice of reducing admission rates from Monday has been applied only at a select few outlets; this coupled with steady Monday, the film looks set to touch the 100 crore mark in real quick time.

Ishkq In Paris, Preity Zinta‘s debut production venture has passed generally unnoticed, collecting about Rs 2 crore in its first week.

Hum Hai Rahi Car Ke and Zindagi 50 50 found no takers and performed poorly.

The Arjun Kapoor starrer Aurangzeb has collected a total of Rs 23.85 crore at the end of its second week.

Go Goa Gone, the ‘zomcom‘ starring Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu and Vir Das has collected Rs 1.8 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 24.95 crore.

Shootout At Wadala, the sequel to the 2007 hit Shootout At Lokhandwala has added Rs 1.1 crore for the fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 49.1 crore.

Chhota Bheem And The Throne Of Bali in its fourth week has added Rs 40 lakh to take its four week total to Rs 4.65 crore.

Aashiqui 2 is going rock steady. The film collected Rs 5.5 crore in its fifth week thus taking its five week total to Rs 76.65 crore, certainly proving to be the sleeper hit of the year.

Ishkq In Paris fails to impress at the BO, Aashiqui 2 still going strong

MUMBAI: Preity Zinta‘s debut production venture combined with her aspirations to make a comeback in a lead with Ishkq In Paris, which finally saw a release, had no takers. The film has barely managed to cross the one crore mark for its opening weekend.

Zindagi 50 50 and Hum Hain Rahi Car Ke fail to find an audience, nothing surprising.

The Arjun Kapoor starrer Aurangzeb, which completed its first week with approximately 19 crore, went on to take its tally to 22.24 crore for ten days.

The zombie comedy starring Kunal Khemu, Vir Das and Saif Ali Khan – Go Goa Gone collects 4.65 crore in its second week taking its two week total to 23.15 crore.

Dharma Production‘s Gippi collects 45 lakh in second week to take its two week total to 3.85 crore.

Shootout At Wadala is just about reaching the end of its run. The film has collected about three crore in its third week, taking its total collections to 48 crore.

Bombay Talkies has collected 45 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to 8.1 crore.

The animation adventure Chhota Bheem And The Throne Of Bali has added 75 lakh in its third week, taking its three week total to 4.25 crore.

Aashiqui 2 continues to hold its sway at the box office. With collections of 7.5 crore in its fourth week, the total for four now stands at 71.15 crore. Clearly consolidating its collections and commanding a super-hit status.

  • Ishkq In Paris: Just another love story!

Ishkq In Paris: Just another love story!

MUMBAI: Inspired by 1995 Hollywood film, Before Sunrise, Ishkq In Paris is an attempt to revive the career of the film’s leading lady as well as the producer, Preity Zinta. The theme is familiar, about two strangers meeting up while travelling, spending some time together and falling in love. The idea in itself was not bad, really. It could have been made into a cute romantic movie had it been made with a fresh face instead of Zinta herself.

    Producers: Preity Zinta, Neelu Zinta.
    Director: Prem Raj.
Cast: Preity Zinta, Rhehan Malliek, Isabelle Adjani, and cameos by Salman Khan, Shekhar Kapur, Chunkey Pande.

Zinta, named Ishkq in the film, is on her way back home to Paris from Rome where she had gone to spend a weekend. She is the daughter of Isabelle Adjani, a famous artiste, a single mother having parted from her husband, Shekhar Kapur, when Zinta was only seven. Sitting across from Zinta on the train is Rhehan Malliek, an Indian settled in London. He is on the train because he missed his morning flight to London, hence onto Paris to take a morning train to London!

Since childhood Ishkq has been taught Hindi to near perfection and the duo get talking. Since Zinta is a local and Malliek has a night to while away, he suggests she spends the night with him and show him around town and generally have fun together. Obviously, Malliek also has sex in mind so, thoughtfully, also packs a condom with his loose change. On the way, a street vendor, Chunkey Pandey, sells them a dice, you toss it and it decides your next programme; it has drinks, dinner, dance, sex etc written on its sides. Zinta is game for drinks, dinner, dance but not sex. She is more traditional than Malliek. This revelry which continues till interval was evident in a recent film, London Paris, New York. Wanting you to come back after the interval, a slide before the interval promises you a story in the second half; in a 97 minute film, at least now a story needed to be incorporated since Malliek is coming back to Paris for work as well as with hopes of catching up with Zinta.

The gist of the story is this, that Zinta hates marriages because she hates divorces because her father deserted her and Adjani early in life. Malliek also hates marriage because of similar reason. And, subconsciously, they both have fallen in love but spend rest of the time in denial till this become the story of an aged Adjani and the aging Zinta where Adjani confides that her father, Kapur, had not deserted them but since he and Adjani were both passionate about their work, they had decided to part amicably. Before Adjani even finishes explaining the real thing, Zinta is on the run, halfway through to catching Malliek before he leaves her for good. Come to think of it, the first half without a story was less complicated!

What the film has to offer is scenic Paris and some witty exchanges between Zinta and Malliek. As for performances, since the casting is not convincing, acting does not matter. Music needed to be much better. However, Kudiye di kurti…, performed by Salman Khan and Teri choodiyan…have sectional audio appeal. Direction is passable. Photography is eye pleasing.

Ishkq In Paris faces poor prospects.

  • Preity Zinta’s Ishkq In Paris to premier on 24 May

Preity Zinta’s Ishkq In Paris to premier on 24 May

MUMBAI: Preity Zinta’s debut as a producer Ishkq In Paris directed by Prem Raj Soni’s will be releasing on 24 May. The movie is a romantic comedy starring Zinta in the female lead role and television actor Rhehan Malliek (earlier Gaurav Chanana) who starred in Star Plus’ medical drama Sanjeevani. B4U Pictures is responsible for the film’s overseas distribution.

Ishkq in Paris is a light hearted romantic comedy with lots of humour, style and fun! Set in the city of romance Paris, the film sees the big-screen comeback of Preity Zinta in a chic and witty role.

The story follows Akash (Malliek) and Ishkq (Zinta), two complete strangers, after having met on a train from Rome to Paris, end up spending the evening together in the romantic city. However, owing to a ‘no baggage’ pact set by Ishkq, the two part ways the next morning without a proper goodbye. Ishkq, being the strong-headed independent girl, moves on, while Akash ends up falling for the girl he spent the evening with. They cross paths once again in Paris but will there be ‘Ishkq In Paris’?

With a focus on fate, love and ideals, Ishkq in Paris brings back the essence of romance to Bollywood and also features a guest appearance by Salman Khan. With the trailer already going viral, the release is long awaited, and the film is set to be a summer hit.

  • KXIP’s gets aggressive on sponsorship front

MUMBAI: It‘s hoping to pocket a king‘s ransom this year. IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab is eyeing 30 per cent growth from team sponsorship, buoyed by the encouraging response it has got from advertisers.

The franchise co-promoted by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Dabur’s Mohit Burman, Wadia Group’s Ness Wadia and Apeejay Surendra Group’s Karan Paul has roped in 14 brands as partners. That‘s way up from the 11 it had last year.

KXIP has signed NVD Solar as title partner for three years till 2015 to replace direct-to-home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h had taken the lead sponsor status for last year‘s IPL.

“We will manage a 30 per cent revenue growth in terms of sponsorship this year. Almost 65 per cent of our local revenue comes from sponsorship. We were not happy with revenues we managed last year. We felt that there was scope for improvement,” KXIP COO Col. Arvinder Singh.

The franchise has got eight new partners this year in addition to the six existing partners which have renewed sponsorship deals.

Apart from NVD Solar, those who have signed on the dotted line with the KXIP team include Lux Cozi as Official Comfort Partner, ACC, Arise Inverters and Batteries, Raindrops Basmati, USL and McDowell’s no. 1 as Official Team Partners.

Kingfisher as the Official Good Times Partner, Pavilion Sport as Official Licensing and Merchandising Partner, Noida University as the Official University Partner, Mountain Dew as the Official Beverage Partner, Meshi Creations as the Official Entertainment Partner, 92.7 Big FM as the Official Radio Partner, Kabirz as Official Food Partner and TK Sports as Sportswear Partner are others who have decided walk hand in hand with the KXIP team during IPL6.

Singh also stated that the franchise dealt directly with sponsors this year rather than going through agencies. KXIP reached out to almost 60 advertisers for team sponsorship.

“So we created a team that approached companies which made a big difference. Half of the deals done were managed by directly talking to them. Last year we had 11partners while this time we have 14 partners with two partners taking two spots each. Some deals took three weeks to close this year while others took a couple of months. Some deals are for a year while others are for three years,” he stated.

Singh adds that it is a question of sitting down with clients and understanding their business objectives. “We have to match their objectives with our marketing parameters. We see if there is synergy in what we are doing and if a tie up is mutually beneficial. Different companies have different goals some want visibility, others want activation while some want to use our platform for better fan engagement.”

Singh explained that NVD Solar came on-board as title partner as the company since it is expanding its operations to North India. “They will launch products using the franchises players as a platform. On the other hand, Lux Cozi does activation with their wholesale and retail people. They run gratification contests where people can see matches,” he added.

NVD Solar managing director Saibal Hazra was extremely gung-ho about the assoction. He said: ” KXI is one of the most dynamic IPL teams. We wish them all the luck for the upcoming tournament and hope this association can reap benefits for both the parties.”

The franchise has meanwhile gone ahead and launched a loyalty programme to strengthen its bond with supporters. Other initiatives like launching a mobile application, a live in-app FanWall and an initiative with the Punjab Police to support women empowerment have also been instituted to engage with fans and contribute to the society.

Clearly, Kings XI Punjab has got its act together on the partner front. Let‘s wait and watch if it will match that performance on the field too.

  • Atul Agnihotri mulls action film with bro-in-law Salman Khan

Atul Agnihotri mulls action film with bro-in-law Salman Khan

MUMBAI: Filmmaker-actor Atul Agnihotri, who along with his brother-in-law Salman Khan gave a stupendous hit in Bodyguard, is all set to again team up with the actor for his proposed upcoming film said to be an action film.

Said Atul in confirmation, “I am doing a movie with Salman. It is completely an original script…and not a remake. It is in a scripting stage and I am actively involved in the project.” “The work is under progress. It is difficult to talk more about it as we are still working on it,” he added.

Considering that most of Salman‘s films like Wanted, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 have revolved around larger-than-life-action and were all blockbusters, the producer is also not shying away from taking the benefit of this genre.

If all goes well, Atul intends to begin work on this project from next year.

It may be remembered that Atul made his debut as a director with Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha made in 2004 that featured Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Bhoomika Chawla. But the film didn‘t do well. Undeterred by this, he directed and even turned producer with Hello in 2008, a film based on the novel One Night at a Call Centre in which Salman had a cameo.

Atul returned to production with Salman-Kareena Kapoor starrer action-romantic film Bodyguard in 2011 that went on to become a huge hit at the box office.

Kal Ho Na Ho completes nine years in circulation

MUMBAI: Yesterday was a noteworthy day for Dharma Productions as its film Kal Ho Naa Ho, completed nine years of circulation. It was on 28 November, 2003 that the film had initially released.

Kal Ho Naa Ho is very close to Karan Johar‘s heart as this was the last film in which he worked with his father Yash Johar. The film also holds immense value in the careers of all the lead actors as they are still remembered for their characters in the film.

All the three stars; Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta shared a great chemistry and slipped into their characters with ease.

Reminiscing the days, Johar said, "Nine years to Kal Ho Naa Ho….the last film my father helmed at Dharma Productions…an ironic title which is special to me…always…."
