Zee TV rejigs show strategy; adds comedy

MUMBAI: After a hiatus of nearly three months, television shows finally went on the floors in Mumbai and new episodes started airing from 13 July. GECs are leaving no stones unturned to create the buzz in the market and gain back their viewer interest.

Zee Entertainment has announced its content comeback via a partnership with its brand partners. Zee collaborated with leading brands – Nestle Maggi, Amul Lassi, PepsiCo, Red Label, Cadbury Dairy Milk, ITC Dark Fantasy to gear up the nation for 13 July, the date of its daily content comeback on Zee TV. ZEEL chief consumer officer Prathyusha Agarwal says that the idea of the teaser was not to mention Zee. According to her the campaign wouldn’t have gone viral if a brand would have mentioned the name of the channel. The idea was to get multiplier reach and audience through a teaser-cum-reveal campaign.

Agarwal notes that TV consumption has increased by 35 per cent and the channel did a predictive analysis with Nielsen to identify where it is going to settle across genres. The biggest variable that is dictating currently is people sitting at home and people going out for work. It gave the channel a fair idea about the available audience. From being a 'woman as a unit' it changed to 'family as a unit' and brought more people together and this, for her, was the big behavioural change that got established with Covid2019.

“We had a Zoom call with our viewers as it was important for us to know how our viewers are feeling. It was not just about what they are viewing but also about what kind of content they are missing. Attitudes and behaviours have changed. Earlier, the day consumption chart looked like one big hump during primetime. But with Covid2019, people are spending more time at home. So there is a non-primetime hump and then there is a primetime one. So, there are more audiences to cater," she shares.

Given these changes, ZEEL has reworked on its Fixed Point Chart (FPC) strategy to understand how it will handle primetime and non-primetime viewers. "Shifts between genres have happened and supply dictated the demand. With fresh content coming in, the channel is looking at all the genres especially comedy. The channel is trying to introduce the element of comedy in shows through characters and changes in script,” she adds.

Apart from that, she highlights that there will be no change in programming order. The channel is focusing on creating a larger bank of episodes if there are any stop starts. There is also no change in the inventory choices, it is tailor-made as per the brand.

While talking about advertisers' response to the new normal, she says, “In the month of April, everyone was wondering what to do next; we didn’t have advertisers. They were also not able to meet the demand on ground. But July is looking very promising. Fill rates are completely back to normal. As the demand has increased significantly in July, I believe advertisers are also keen to meet the demand.”

The Media Ant co-founder Samir Chaudhary thinks that there will be more advertisements in the non-primetime slot now. Because of the non-travelled behaviour, viewership patterns will remain the same, but the timing will be scattered.

He adds that inventories will remain the same but more slots will be filled. He says, “Many FMCG brands are eager to advertise as IPL and other events did not happen. But they will be looking more at news channels than GECs because in the past few months the reach has predominantly come from news. However, they will be looking at other segments to advertise.”

Agarwal further explains that there are different kinds of market. One is where people are not able to use a certain product or they are careful about its usage and for those customers it is critical for brands to create demand. In this situation they are finding ways to trigger demand. The  biggest and active advertisers are FMCG and CPG because people are consuming it a lot more than any other category.

She adds, “There are decades where nothing happens and then there are weeks where decades happens. In these categories you have brand loyalty that will never change. But during Covid2019 for e.g., you have ten consumption occasions. Consumers were forced to sample other brands and other product options. Hence, it became critical for brands to get back the share. If there is great product and good pricing, consumers are likely to go back. In our business consumers belong to the overdrive consumption category. It is important to get an early mover advantage to gain share.”

Chaudhary shares that advertising rates will come down by 30-40 per cent and channels will have to incentivise the rates for advertisers to come on board. He adds that as user sentiment has changed, people are buying fewer products so advertisers will get less profit.

He also notes that most of the brands will go with their core messaging but they might twist their ideas to incorporate pandemic in it. Brands are choosing digital mediums for long ad formats but 30-second or short-form advertisements will continue on television.

For Zee TV, out-of-home medium acted as an announcer media, after which campaigns were released on other digital mediums. Agarwal believes that social media has a good number of audiences and platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram can make things viral quicker than word of mouth. The channel adopts a twin strategy for most of its content.

Zee TV’s singing reality show Sa re ga ma also started production last week. The channel is adopting a hybrid production model to ensure safety and security. According to Agarwal, most of the post-production work is happening remotely. This move has helped it to bring content robustly.

Its brand positioning ‘Seene Mein Cinema’ is aimed towards inspiring every Indian to make the most of everything that life has to offer, starting 31 March.

The film reflects the new philosophy and positioning, accentuating the essence of inspiration and motivation. With the brand repositioning, the channel intends to break through the clutter and cement its position as a thought leader and a distinct channel that has a strong emotional connect with its viewers. The channel boasts of a wide range of inspiring movies like Simmba, Uri, Manikarnika, Zero, Dangal, Raazi, SatyamevJayate, Secret Superstar, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha, Parmanu, Padman, amongst many others.

Zee Hindi movies cluster business head Ruchir Tiwari said, “2019 is special for us as we are hoping to build an even larger organic and loyal audience base with the brand repositioning of our marquee channel – Zee Cinema. Since its inception, the channel has stood for three things: movies, masti and magic. When we see underdogs take on extraordinary goals, despite all adversities and difficulties, we can relate to them. New age cinema is all about bringing the extraordinary together to create nonchalant magic. With the commencement of a new era in cinema, the brand decided to undergo a total visual transformation including a shift in brand focus – Seene Mein Cinema. As ZEEL completes 25 years, this not only makes us feel extremely proud but also encourages us to do better.”

He added, “The channel’s initial thought was to be the go to channel for Bollywood fans, but today we have managed to re-define ourselves and create a category for ourselves. This year we want our viewers to break away from the shackles of their shortcomings and live a life that is an inspiration for all. We are defined by the moments when we decide to never give up and take that risk. Our new brand campaign is an ode to all who have the jazba in them to not let the hurdles of life demotivate their spirit of living.”

ZEEL CMO Prathyusha Agarwal said, “It is said that life inspires movies. With our new brand philosophy ‘Jazba hai jeene mein, jab cinema hai seene mein’ we want to urge our viewers to take inspiration from cinema and chase the extraordinary. It is the spirit of seeing the silver lining and the belief that nothing is impossible that helps us sail through the most difficult situations in life. Hindi cinema boasts of many inspirational stories that give us the courage to take a leap forward. The brand positioning ‘Seene Mein Cinema’ celebrates the jazba that is hidden inside every individual and would like to encourage them to embrace life with open arms.”

&TV gets brand refresh; ad inventories sold out for new shows

MUMBAI: Zee took a bold step when it decided to launch channels under a different brand name ‘&’ five years ago. The bet worked and the brand lived. Now, &TV, the GEC, is undergoing a brand refresh with a new lineup of shows as well.

In 2015, &TV was launched with the philosophy 'Jashn Jeene Ka' – celebrating the spirit of life. Now, the channel is bringing up yet another thought ‘Hai Khaas Har Andaaz’, created by Lowe Lintas that premieres this weekend, breaking first on its new live singing reality show for kids Love Me India at 9 pm. &TV has two more shows in the bouquet named Perfect Pati and Vikram and Betaal.

ZEEL CEO Punit Misra said, “We believe &TV, the youngest GEC in the ZEEL portfolio, is best suited to cater to &dians – the multifaceted, progressive, young urban viewers who want to be more. With our unique brand point-of-view led content creation approach, the &TV team has crafted stories and characters that &dians will fall in love with.”

Apart from its flagship show Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain, that helped the channel gain immense traction from the viewers, it didn’t shy away from going against the tide and introducing a 100kg bahu on television with Badho Bahu or presenting kanha and radha differently. It pushed the envelope further by introducing supernatural-romance in Laal Ishq.

Commenting on the advertisers’ growth since its launch, ZEEL CMO Pratyusha Agarwal said that the growth has been phenomenal and ad inventories are already sold out for the upcoming shows. “Since the past three years, advertisers have grown up to 55 per cent,” she added.

&TV head Vishnu Shankar has been associated with Zee for more than seven years now. He started working with Zee in February 2010 as the programming head of Zing, Zee ETC and Zee Trendz. A year ago he filled Rajesh Iyer’s shoes with a vision to scale-up the cluster’s growth in a bid to entertain audiences. He said, “In the last three years, we have created many marquee properties and the channel had a good 4.5 per cent market share and now we have 7.8 per cent market share.”

We will soon get to see if the change will pay off.

  • ZEEL gets aggressive with &flix launch

ZEEL gets aggressive with &flix launch

MUMBAI: And now following in the footsteps of &Prive HD, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has announced that it is rolling out &flix come 1 pm on 3 June 2018 on major DTH and digital cable TV platforms. The target audience for the new offering: the striver, which the channel defines as those who are always pursuing new experiences, are ready to upgrade and take that quantum leap.

Thus &flix will feature 52 premiers of hit movies – amongst a total roster of 400 – that have stories that show not just what is, but what could be. Among the top notch titles –  that it has acquired from 10-11 independent Hollywood players and studios such as Sony, Paramount and Disney – that will debut on &flix feature: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Baby Driver, Life, The Emoji Movie, The Atomic Blonde, Jumanji and Blade Runner 2049.

&flix is initially seeking a market in the six metros and will be available on Dish TV, Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Sun TV, Hathway and TCCL to name a few to start with.

According to ZEEL premium channels- business cluster head Aparna Bhosle, 60 per cent of the total English content viewership comes from mega cities and has been growing at a CAGR of an impressive 35 per cent over the past three years.

“Out of the 183 million TV households, 51 million households consume English movies in India,” she elaborated.

Keeping in mind, that it is targeting millennials, its agency Publicis and the in-house team has laid out an expansive digital and print campaign in combination with cross promotions on sister HD channels and the great outdoors.

The idea is to get 350 million impressions over six weeks with messaging going out on platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, BuzzFeed, HuffPost and many more. The Twitter integrated outdoor innovation to unveil the channel’s first communication saw movie fans tweeting 10,000 tweets along with the channel’s hashtag, generating more than 52 million impressions in just 24 hours in the process.

“The brand proposition, Leap Forth, was created with the thought that you can have an extraordinary life with unlimited possibilities if you dare to take the leap,” shared ZEEL CMO Prathyusha Agarwal with indiantelevision.com.  “Our marketing campaign has been chalked out keeping in light the awe-inspiring larger than life experience we wish to offer. Our innovations, across mediums, reflect the magnitude of our offering, surely making it one of the biggest launches in our sector this year.”

Sources reveal that a marketing and promotional budget in excess of Rs 5 crore has been kept aside for the launch activity.

“For our ever-evolving audiences who are spoilt for choice, &flix will fuel the drive to take a quantum leap and break out of their orbits,” added Agarwal. “Our research led us to understand that over 60 per cent of all English movie viewers fall under the category of un-satiated strivers. With &flix, we aim to enthral the audience which is persistent in its pursuit of new experiences and is not easily satiated.”

&flix’s packaging was assigned to Canadian design agency Zink which is behind &Prive HD’s look as well.

At stake is a piece of the Rs 550-crore-600-odd crore spend that brands and media fork out on the English movie genre. Five brands have come on board as launch sponsor partners.  Among these feature Fiama (ITC), Lloyd (Havells), 100 Pipers (Pernod Ricard), Amazon Fire TV stick and Domino’s Pizza, revealed ZEEL EVP Sales Mona Jain.  She adds: “The strong brand proposition has helped us connect with some of the key like-minded brands across sectors. The response has been extremely positive from our clients and such partnerships further validate our belief in our offering. We are hoping to drive synergies with more brands as we embark on this new journey.”

According to insiders, the spot rates that it is asking for from agencies are even higher than &Prive HD as &flix is available in both HD and SD feeds.

Bhosle is sanguine that the heightened activity in the English movie genre is likely to work positively in its favour and she sees it growing faster and at a higher rate than in the past two years.

Shall we say Amen to that?

  • Zee TV stirs emotional connect with its brand campaign on the ‘first flight’

Zee TV stirs emotional connect with its brand campaign on the ‘first flight’

MUMBAI: Zee TV as a channel has always been poised to cater to the middle class. For its latest 25-year celebration refresh, the channel launched a commercial that encapsulates just that.

The ad film portrays a retired government employee, who is afraid of flying in an aircraft, takes a flight for the first time and for a heartwarming reason. Turns out, it is a first for his daughter too as the captain in charge of the same aircraft.

Conceptualised by Publicis India, the film delivers the message, ‘The great Indian middle class is truly taking charge and rewriting the rules of their destiny.’

During the launch of the film, ZEEL domestic broadcast business CEO Punit Misra shared that the entire team became teary eyed when the film was shown to them.

The TVC was created in 2 months. Sharing his experience of working with Zee for this particular ad film, Publicis India managing director and CCO Bobby Pawar mentions, “Zee TV is not just the pioneer of entertainment but it is an insider to everyone’s home and a part of their family. The characters become a part of the viewers life after a period of time and have built the notion of ‘Jo Khud Se Jeet Jata hai’ ( overcoming your inner battles). The story is about people who outdo themselves, their circumstances and the society to champion themselves at the end of the day.”

The campaigns talks about two things: the unconditional love of a father and about a woman who achieves her dream with her father’s support, despite the challenges.

ZEEL CMO Pratyusha Agarwal said, “ We wanted something that would be iconic for 100 years, which was truly delivered. Zee TV is not about the borrowed glory it’s about the common story.”
