    Mumbai:  Ten years ago today, the first Indian rider hailed an Uber on the streets of Bengaluru, beginning a journey that would quickly see the app become the country’s most preferred platforms for riders and drivers alike. Since then, Uber has transformed the mobility landscape in India. A safe, reliable and affordable car, auto, moto or bus ride via the app is now available in 125 cities across India.

    To celebrate this milestone, here is a look back at the impact Uber has made.

    Over the last 10 years in India …

    ●      Over 50,000 Crores – that is the amount of money drivers have earned through the Uber platform since 2013

    ●      3,300 Crore Kilometers – that is how much Uber drivers have driven, it is equivalent to travelling from Earth to the Moon about 86000 times!

    ●      300 Crores – that is the total number of trips taken on Uber in India

    ●      30 Lakh – that is the number of drivers who have earned via the Uber app as a driver partner, that’s enough to fill the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad 30 times over!

    With ten years of Uber, here are some significant consumer trends that tell the story of how Uber is shaping mobility preferences of Indians. Here are the highlights:

    ●      90% respondents say that Uber has revolutionized the way they travel in India

    ●      72% say that availability of ridesharing options has made them re-evaluate purchase of a personal vehicle.

    ●      Over 30% say mobility offered through multiple modes is the single most loved aspect of Uber. Avoiding car maintenance or driver salaries ranks second while freeing up time during commute is the third most loved aspect.

    ●      79% said that they totally or frequently depend on Uber for their nightlife plans that involve drinking

    ●      Nearly 55% say that sustainable mobility will become mainstream over the coming decade

    Uber appoints Arnab Kumar as director of business development for India and South Asia

    Mumbai: Uber, India’s leading ridesharing app, has onboarded Arnab Kumar as director of business development for India and South Asia.

    Kumar joins Uber with over 17 years of experience across technology and financial services  sectors. Kumar’s professional journey includes building the India operations for Coinbase and leading India fintech investments and strategic initiatives for Prosus (formerly known as Naspers). Kumar has previously served as program director at NITI Aayog where he contributed to the development of emerging technology initiatives including Aarogya Setu, India’s COVID contact tracing app. Kumar has also worked as an investment banker for Deutsche Bank in Singapore and New York. He is an alumnus of Birla Institute of Technology Mesra and Indian School of Business Hyderabad and is a CFA charterholder.

    Commenting on the appointment, Uber India and South Asia president Prabhjeet Singh said, “We are delighted to have Arnab join our leadership team to strengthen Uber’s presence and ensure Uber’s ongoing success in India and South Asia.     Kumar’s appointment comes as the company completes a decade of operations in India and is focused on growing sustainable mobility options. With a partnership approach to different stakeholders in the value chain like EV fleets, financiers, EV infrastructure providers and government bodies, Uber has been at the forefront of EV transition in India. Earlier this year, in the largest EV commitment yet between an automaker and a ridesharing platform in India, Tata Motors agreed to supply 25,000 EVs to fleets on the Uber platform.

    Uber launches music video as ode to India’s 75th Independence Day

    Mumbai: Uber has launched a music video to celebrate India’s 75th Independence Day starring Esther Hnamte, a five-year-old singer from Mizoram performing a rendition of “Maa Tujhe Salaam”.

    The three-minute video also highlights Uber’s efforts to support communities around the country during COVID-19. It pays tribute to India’s fighting spirit throughout the pandemic and reinforces Uber’s commitment to help the country build back better, said the company in a statement.

    The company remained focused on its social impact initiatives in 2021 by pledging free rides to help citizens travelling to vaccination centers, including partnering with social institutions like HelpAge India and Robin Hood Army to support vaccinations for vulnerable and senior citizens.

    “Uber has had a single goal during the pandemic and that was supporting our communities,” said Uber president for India and South Asia, Prabhjeet Singh. “Whether it is helping drivers to get vaccinated, offering free rides to frontline health workers, helping the elderly and vulnerable travel to vaccination centres, Uber is determined to do its part to help India build back better.”

    Uber also allocated Rs 18.5 crore to help get 150,000 driver-partners on the platform vaccinated.

    Uber appoints Prabhjeet Singh as president of India, south Asia

    NEW DELHI: Ride-hailing platform Uber on Thursday said it has elevated Prabhjeet Singh as president of India and south Asia operations. In his new role, Singh will oversee the next phase of growth in the company's mobility business and ensure safety of riders  and drivers across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, a statement said.

    Singh was previously serving as director operations (India and south Asia) and head of cities. "I'm delighted to announce that Prabh is replacing me as Uber's new president for India and south Asia, one of our fastest growing and most strategic markets. Prabh is a passionate and innovative leader and has been instrumental in helping build Uber from the ground up and established our category leadership in the ride-sharing market," Uber regional general manager for Asia Pacific Pradeep Parameswaran said.

    Singh said, “I’m thrilled to have been given the responsibility of leading Uber in India and south Asia, and look forward to collaborating with exceptional teams and gifted colleagues across the Uber family to strengthen our services and product offerings. Uber is an integral part of the fabric of our cities and as they start moving again, we have prioritised the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and service that our riders and drivers expect of us.’’  

    Recently, other key south Asian leaders have also been elevated to wider, regional roles. Former India SA president Pradeep Parameswaran is now the regional general manager APAC.

    Singh, an IIT-Kharagpur and IIM-A alum, joined Uber in August 2015 from McKinsey and Co where he was an associate partner. He will be supported in his new role by a seasoned regional leadership team.
