    Rajkummar Rao encourages youth to vote in #PowerOf18 Twitter video

    MUMBAI: As part of the #PowerOf18 initiative, Twitter is collaborating with renowned Indian personalities to encourage the youth of India to vote in the upcoming general elections.

    Bollywood star Rajkummar Rao (@RajkummarRao) is the latest addition to be featured as part of the #PowerOf18 online video series on @TwitterIndia, joining young personalities across India to talk about what inspires them and their view of #PowerOf18. Saluting the young energy of India, in this special video on Twitter Rajkummar Rao (@RajkummarRao) is seen speaking about change, empowerment and youth, asking people to Tweet the change they want to see with #PowerOf18.

    Commenting on the importance of voting,  Rajkummar Rao (@RajkummarRao)  said, "It is not only about us. It is about our generations to come. So question, ask for your rights, if you see a horrible infrastructure around you take a picture and put it out, ask your politicians why? Only you have the power to bring in that change and that change will come through vote.”

    Past participants of the #PowerOf18 video series include singer Jassie Gill (@JassieGill), boxer Nikhat Zareen (@Nikhat_Zareen), and writer, poet and #MeTooIndia activist Mahima Kukreja (@AGirlOfHerWords).

    The #PowerOf18 campaign is aimed at encouraging more youth in India to participate in civic engagement, understand the significance of their right to vote and contribute to public debate on Twitter. The campaign launch is marked by an emoji activated by the hashtag #PowerOf18 available now until June 2019.

    MUMBAI: Twitter is about serving the public conversation, highlighting what’s happening in the world and enabling people to talk about it right now. As part of its youth engagement initiative #PowerOf18, Twitter India unveils new research findings today specific to the youth sentiment in Tamil Nadu on social media and the elections at the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai. Panellists Sudarshan Ramabadran (@sudarshanr108), Senior Research Fellow and Administrative Head, Center for Soft Power, India Foundation and Convenor, Tamil Nadu Young Thinkers Forum, and Arun Krishnamurthy (@ArunEFI), Indian environmental activist with Environmentalist Foundation India, join Twitter at the #PowerOf18 college dialogue session, sharing their perspective on what it means to turn 18 and the importance of voting in the upcoming elections.

    Survey findings

    Twitter is where people can serve the public conversation; two in three (66.9%) of the youth on Twitter in Tamil Nadu surveyed believe that they are contributing to the public debate by posting on the platform. More than half (58.4%) of the Twitter users surveyed will actively engage with and raise concerns to the government on issues that affect them or their community, versus 30.8% of those not on the platform. In addition, 57.8% of the youth in Tamil Nadu surveyed use Twitter to express their opinions and be heard, while 56% will use Twitter to gather support for a cause or movement.

    Across the board, the population in India is politically active and the survey finds on average 98% of Tamil Nadu youth indicate that they would vote in the upcoming elections. This is the highest proportion of youth voter interest in comparison with all other states surveyed in the country. In comparison, Twitter users (99.4%) surveyed were more likely than those not on the platform (94.9%) to vote in the upcoming elections.

    Over 85% of Tamil Nadu youth surveyed will turn to social media to find out what’s happening in India and around the world, according to the study’s findings. The rising importance of social media for information consumption is reinforced as Tamil Nadu youth surveyed rank social media platforms as the most important source for understanding what’s happening in India and around the world, in comparison to all other mediums including newspapers, TV, and public events. 

    This study[1] is part of a larger nationwide survey conducted with 4,274 youth respondents from India between 24 September – 19 October 2018. The survey methodology qualifies the respondents as minimally secondary literate, aged between 18 – 35 years old. India is expected to have 34.33% share of youth (15 – 34 years old) in total population by 2020, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation.

    In order to effectively represent the diversity of issues, Twitter India has also identified key content partners to curate useful electoral information and offer different perspectives that will help the youth of India who are getting ready to vote see every side of the public conversation.     Twitter collaborates with young personalities for #PowerOf18 initiative

    MUMBAI: As part of #PowerOf18 initiative, Twitter is collaborating with renowned Indian personalities to encourage the youth of India to vote in the upcoming general elections. It has kick-started an online video series on its official handle featuring young personalities from across India, including singer Jassie Gill, boxer Nikhat Zareen, and writer, poet, and #MeTooIndia voice Mahima Kukreja.

    The first video in the series features Gill who is seen talking about youth, politics and what #PowerOf18 means to him. In the video, Jassie can be seen recalling his younger days. He shares how excited he was to get his driver’s license on turning 18. He insists that young people should express themselves on Twitter.

    On youth empowerment, the singer says that it is the youth that fuels the growth of a nation through fresh perspectives. Efforts should be put into good things and if the youth of India sets their minds, they can do great things and make their family, neighbourhood, and country very proud.

    Twitter India launches #PowerOf18 initiative for youth civic engagement

    MUMBAI:  Voting rights emerged as the top response when asked what people would consider the power of turning 18 years old, according to a new survey from Twitter India. With this empowering insight, Twitter is launching today a social initiative called #PowerOf18 aimed at encouraging the youth of India to contribute to public debate and participate in civic engagement in the upcoming election season. Supported by Twitter’s mission to serve the public conversation, the initiative was launched by Jack Dorsey, CEO & Co-Founder, Twitter and  Maya Hari, Vice-President & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Twitter in a Townhall chat with the students of IIT Delhi today. The campaign launch is marked by an emoji activated by the #PowerOf18 hashtag.

    The research conducted with over 3,600 respondents aged 18 – 30 year olds, comprising Twitter and non-Twitter users, focused on people’s attitude in India in shaping the political and social environment. The survey found an overwhelming 94% of respondents indicating that they would vote in the upcoming elections. 87% of Indians surveyed believe that voting makes you a responsible citizen and more than half (53%) are voting because they want to make a difference.

    The study also pointed towards the rising importance of social media for information consumption. 57% of youth surveyed would turn to social media to find out what’s happening in India and around the world, a percentage higher than all other mediums including newspapers. 69% of Twitter users surveyed always stay up to date with political news and events versus 44% of non-Twitter users.

    Additionally, the survey found Twitter users more engaged in civic discussion versus non-Twitter users. 59% of Twitter users actively engage with and raise concerns to the government on issues that affect them or their community versus 37% of non-Twitter users. Two in three Indian Twitter users believe that they are contributing to the public debate by posting on Twitter.

    In relation, Twitter India aims to encourage the youth of India with #PowerOf18 to leverage the platform for public conversation and vote for the future they seek. As part of the initiative, Twitter is kickstarting the initiative with an online video series on @TwitterIndia featuring young personalities across India such as Indian singer Jassie Gill (@JassieGill), Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen (@Nikhat_Zareen), writer, poet and #MeTooIndia voice Mahima Kukreja (@AGirlOfHerWords), sharing about their inspirations and their view of #PowerOf18. Twitter seeks to work with more like-minded partners and personalities to create awareness of the importance of voting.

    The #PowerOf18 campaign launch at IIT Delhi, concluded with a Q&A round where students had the opportunity to submit their questions to Jack with #PowerOf18.

    Several questions focused around Twitter’s role in shaping society and culture, youth activism, upcoming general elections and the importance of voting were raised during the Townhall at IIT Delhi:

    Twitter will be fuelling #PowerOf18 conversations through @TwitterIndia as part of this initiative. #PowerOf18 will serve as a resource for all young Indians to find more information about the elections, support social causes they are passionate about, and join the public conversation. The platform aims to engage more young people in India to contribute to public debate and work with like-minded partners that share the same objective of encouraging civic engagement among the youth.

    The nationwide survey was conducted with 3,622 youth respondents from India between 24 September – 19 October 2018. The survey methodology qualifies the respondents as minimally secondary literate, aged between 18 – 30 years old.
