    ‘PK’…Mildly bubbly!

MUMBAI: The expectations from PK would, naturally, be as high as director Raju Hirani’s three earlier classic hits, the Munnabhai two and 3 Idiots have built. The basic theme remains the same: that of delivering a full-fledged sermon. If 3 Idiots was on education, PK serves to be a satire on the exploitation perpetuated in the name of religion by self-styled god men. This is not a mean thing to achieve for a believer, which most of us in India are. We can’t reject our God hence Hirani seeks outside help.

Aamir Khan is an alien who has been sent by his people to do a research on earthlings when they realised people similar to them exist on earth. Aamir’s folks on his planet do not believe in covering their naturally given body by outer layers like clothes and, hence, he lands in the far flung desert of Rajasthan totally nude. The only thing on his body is a pendant tied around his neck which is his remote to contact his spaceship when he is ready to return to his home planet.

As Aamir lands he sees an earthling near railway tracks who also gives him his first experience with the ways of earth people. This stranger tugs at his pendant and makes a run for it getting on to the running goods train. Aamir proceeds to the nearest town where he steals clothes from intimate lovers making it out in parked cars; money comes along in wallets of the stolen clothes and when it falls short there is always a blind beggar around to steal from.

In the town, Aamir comes across Sanjay Dutt, a helpful soul. Aamir has no language because on his planet people communicate mind to mind. He tries to grab hands of every woman he sees. Sanjay thinks Aamir is in a need of a woman and takes him to a whorehouse where he holds her hands for a few hours and transfers her vocabulary to himself.

Sanjay tells him that to find his remote; Aamir will have to go to Delhi where costly stolen goods are sold. However, not knowing where to start looking for his remote, he is told that only God can help him find his lost property. Aamir sets out in search of God but soon realises that different people hold different beliefs. He alternates between mandir, masjid and church in an attempt to find the real God. While his attempts create funny situations, it also conveys the hypocrisy as well as the contradictions of various faiths.

When a god man or a politician has to be exposed, a TV reporter in the story has become sort of mandatory. Here Anushka Sharma is the one. Her assignment is to ‘report’ a story on a suicidal puppy! That is when she spots Aamir doing his antics and always on the run as he keeps offending people of some religion or the other. She thinks there is a huge story here to which her boss, Boman Irani, does not agree. Anushka devotes her working hours and more to be with Aamir.

The search for his remote leads Aamir to a God man, Saurabh Shukla. Saurabh has bought the remote from the man who stole it and is passing it off as bead that fell from Lord Shiva’s Damroo. He declares to his devotees that God wills him to build a massive temple for this bead. This is his way to extract funds from his devotees. Anushka has an axe to grind with the Swami. Her parents are blind followers of Saurabh and she holds him responsible for breaking her romance with a Pakistani boy, Sushant Singh Rajput, while they are studying in Belgium.

She joins Aamir in exposing Saurabh. While Aamir only wants to prove that Saurabh’s communication with God is reaching ‘wrong number’, Anushka knows Aamir will unwittingly expose Saurabh to be a fraud. In a series of TV reports, Anushka manages to unmask all god men of all religions leading to a finale where Aamir and Saurabh come face to face on a TV debate. Anushka gets her love back, Aamir gets his remote and Saurabh loses everything.

PK does not quite bear the Raju Hirani stamp; while the script holds well through the first half and is fairly entertaining, its loses steam as the film proceeds into second half. While becoming a sermon on frauds operating as god men, the subject is dealt with at length and with better effect in OMG: Oh My God, which came out not very long ago. The end is rather tame until it brings Aamir back for the concluding scene. Raju Hirani is in his element but the script holds him back to some extent. Also, the film does not have a full-fledged romantic track. The film has a fairly good musical score with couple of hummable songs in Dil darbadar…. and Chaar kadam…, the others being thematic. The film needed some trimming for sure.

Aamir has to carry this film singularly on his shoulders and, being an alien, with limited expressions. However, he manages to put in a great performance conveying the innocence he is supposed to. Anushka Sharma is good. The others have bit roles with Sushant exuding great charm, Boman being his usual self and Sanjay having nothing much to do. Saurabh’s character is not properly etched.

PK has been released on a massive scale with enhanced admission rates and Christmas holidays to follow soon, which would aid it to a great extent to overcome its comparison with Hirani’s earlier films.

    Producers: Vinod Chopra, Raju Hirani.

    Director: Raju Hirani.

Cast: Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla.

‘Peekay (PK)’, the first Hindi film to be shot in Bruges, Belgium

MUMBAI: Bruges, ‘the Venice of the North’, a splendid medieval art city in Flanders,  Belgium is one of the main locations of the much awaited Bollywood film Peekay (PK), the first Indian feature film to be shot in the city.

The Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput starrer Peekay (PK) directed by  Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Rajkumar Hirani Films and Vidhu VinodChopra Films in association with UTV Motion Pictures, filmed some major landmarks of Bruges. These include  the  Market  Square  and  Belfry,  Howest  Campus  Sint-Jorisstraat,  the  Beguinage (an architectural  complex  that  used  to  housed  a  semi-monastic  community  of  religious women called Beguines), plus several streets andcanals. The sequences shot in Bruges also feature a lilting romantic song “Chaar Kadam” that also beautifully captures some of the great landmarks of the town.

Bruges, surrounded by an almost continuous ring of canals, is the best preserved example of medieval Flanders and is one of the premier tourist destinations of the region attracting more than 4 million visitors each year. The city boasts of numerous medieval buildings, churches, museums and art collections. It can be easily explored on foot, by boat along quiet canals, or by horse-drawn carriages over cobblestone streets. The historic center of Bruges is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and isteeming with picture perfect places of interest.

PK is one of the big budget releases of 2014. The film tells the story about an Indian student living in Bruges, who wants to marry her boyfriend, but faces all kinds of obstacles. This isn’t just another typical romantic Bollywood film and the story goes deeper.

Director Rajkumar Hirani decided on the destination post his visit to Bruges. He was impressed by Bruges’ alleys, picturesque canals and verdant ramparts and her elegant mysteriousness. The duo of Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra have successfully partnered in some of the top Bollywood hits earlier including  ‘MunnaBhai MBBS’, ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ and ‘3 idiots.’ Among these, ‘3 Idiots’ was the highest grosser at the box office in 2009, and the film also featured Aamir Khan among others in the star cast. PK brings this successful team back after a gap of five years.

“I was spellbound by the picturesque architecture, landscapes, the strong historical background and clean refreshing environs. I decided that this is just the right place toshoot a part of the movie as it fitted in beautifully with the storyline,” said Hirani.

Karl Van den Bossche, Consul General of Belgium in Mumbai said, “It has been a great experience associating with Mr. Hirani for his film PK, and we are overjoyed that people in India will get a glimpse of the beautiful city of Bruges through the film. I am sure this will inspire people to visit and experience the city and Belgium, which has so much to offer to Indian travellers. We are there to assist all tourists and travel agents with their visa requests if they want to travel to Bruges and Belgium.”

Visit Flanders India representative Sunil Puri said, “Bruges is one of the four major art cities of Flanders, which is the northern federated state of the Kingdom ofBelgium. The other enchanting cities are Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. Even though Indians are now travelling to various parts of the globe, Bruges is the brightest gemamongst the medieval cities of Europe. We look forward to welcoming more and more Indian visitors to this remarkable destination.”

Reportedly, the siblings had been thinking over the prospect for long and were waiting for the right time and opportunity. It still remains to be seen which project they undertake for their debut venture.

Earlier Ranbir Kapoor had announced that he would co-produce his upcoming movie Bombay Velvet with Phantom productions, owned by Anurag Kashyap. His second production venture will again be his upcoming movie Jagga Jasoos. Actress Anushka Sharma, who is awaiting the release of her next PK, also is also set to try her hands as a producer for one of her upcoming movies – NH10. • PK motion poster 4: Now, Anushka carries the transistor

PK motion poster 4: Now, Anushka carries the transistor

MUMBAI: With Aamir Khan making headlines with the PK posters, now it is Anushka Sharma’s turn to ‘wear the transistor’.

Khan, who plays the title role in the film, took to Twitter to share Sharma’s first PK look. The Jab Tak Hain Jaan actress like Khan, is dressed in khaki, sporting a short hairdo and the transistor slung across. This is the first official look that the makers of the film have released of the actress.

The motion poster shows five different looks of the beauty along with co-star Aamir Khan.

Ahead of the release of the poster, Aamir Khan tweeted:, “Babaaaal machney wala hai!!! Jaggu bhi humre jaise tiranjister pahan kar poster ma? Babaaaaal machney wala hai !!!”

Later with the link of the motion poster, he tweeted, “Ei dekha….. humaar Jaggu…. tiranjister ke saath…“

  • Bombay Velvet release pushed back to avoid clash with Aamir Khan’s PK

Bombay Velvet release pushed back to avoid clash with Aamir Khan’s PK

MUMBAI: If rumors doing the rounds are to be believed, Anurag Kashyap’s dream project Bombay Velvet with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma will not release as per the schedule.

According to Zoom, the release of Aamir Khan’s movie PK on Christmas may have lead Kashyap to postpone the release of Bombay Velvet. This decision will then call off the clash between Bollywood’s two biggest blockbusters this year.

Further, the makers of Bombay Velvet tried to convince Aamir Khan and the producers of the PK team to adjust the release dates to no avail. However, Khan denied any such news at his birthday party recently.

History says it; there have been enormous losses when two big Bollywood films clash at the box office. While in 2012, the Diwali release of Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardaar divided the box office profit, the 2013 Eid release of Chennai Express and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobara’s clash brought in massive monetary loss to Ekta Kapoor. And the cherry on the cake is the fight within for maximum number of screens with the distributors! Considering this, guess the makers of Bombay Velvet have decided to hold back the release and not compete with the marketing king and perfectionist Khan at the box office.

  • Aamir Khan’s PK to release during Christmas

Aamir Khan’s PK to release during Christmas

MUMBAI: Aamir Khan fans have been waiting with bated breath for his next PK directed by Raj Kumar Hirani. When the two of them joined their hands earlier, the outcome was the blockbuster 3 Idiots. But the wait for the fans is going to be longer as an official statement reveals that the film that was supposed to be released in June, will now release during Christmas.

We wonder the cause behind pushing the movie ahead by more than six months as earlier it was supposed to release in June. Is it because Aamir’s Christmas releases usually turn out to be blockbusters? It could be a possible reason.

Interestingly, the Christmas week will also see the release of Anurag Kashyap’s ambitious project, Bombay Velvet starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. With two big releases with similarly big stars, we just hope the industry does a good business.

  • Anushka Sharma turns producer, joins hands with Phantom for NH-10

Anushka Sharma turns producer, joins hands with Phantom for NH-10

MUMBAI: Anushka Sharma is joining hands with Phantom to produce Navdeep Singh’s next film titled, NH 10. Anushka, who plays the lead in the film, liked the script so much that she has decided to co-produce it with Phantom.

The deal makes the 25-year-old actor the youngest actor-producers on the block taking her to a different league altogether vis-?-vis her contemporaries. With two of the biggest films Rajkumar Hirani’s Peekay with Aamir Khan and Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet with Ranbir Kapoor, NH 10 will be her third release next year.

Continuing with their content driven films like Lootera, which released this year, Phantom will back Navdeep Singh to direct his second film post his critically acclaimed debut Manorama 6 Feet Under. The film is full with edge of the seat action and thrills, when a road trip goes wrong. It brings together a very talented crew of technicians including international action directors.

Speaking on her new role, Anushka says, “I’m thrilled to get a chance to do this so early in my career. I couldn’t have found a better project than NH-10 to kick-start this new phase in my film journey. This is my second film after Bombay Velvet with Phantom, and it’s a blast working with them. It’s going to be super-exciting working together again on what promises to be an explosive film.”

Vikramaditya Motwane, who is a part of the Phantom team, is excited to partner with the young actor. He says, “We love to partner with the talent we work with. It’s extremely reassuring for us when the lead actor wants to join hands, to back an outstanding script like NH10. We strongly believe in the script and know that Navdeep is going to make a kickass film out of it”.

The film will be shot this winter across the northern plains around Delhi, NH 10 and will release on 12 September, 2014.
