  • APOS 2025: How JioStar turns sports into co-creation, not just consumption

APOS 2025: How JioStar turns sports into co-creation, not just consumption

BALI:  JioStar is no longer content with just broadcasting sport—it’s rewriting the production storybook altogether. Speaking at APOS 2025 in Bali, JioStar head of sports production services & technology Prashant Khanna laid out a bold vision: India as the epicentre of global sports innovation.

“We don’t just see ourselves as broadcasters or production partners,” Khanna said during a high-energy fireside chat. “We’re in the business of helping India create iconic sporting memories.”

Khanna spotlighted JioStar’s end-to-end reimagining of the sports viewing experience—infused with tech, empathy, and staggering interactivity. Think sign-language feeds, descriptive audio for the visually impaired, vertical videos, motion-capture-powered kids’ streams, and multi-cam toggles.

“The modern fan doesn’t want to just watch—they want to co-create,” Khanna stressed. “Millions are producing their own version of the game in real time. That’s the expectation.”

A major catalyst behind this transformation? Starlab, JioStar’s in-house innovation unit that’s quietly building a cloud-native production stack in collaboration with AWS, creators, and start-ups. The result: hyper-personalised, scalable, and immersive experiences beamed across devices in formats fans choose.

Khanna also highlighted JioStar’s deep investment in talent pipelines through its partnership with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies—a government-led effort to skill the next generation in sports and live production.

“It’s not just about what audiences see today. It’s about who shapes that experience tomorrow,” he said.
Citing the recently concluded 18th season of the IPL as a “turning point,” Khanna revealed the company’s key takeaway: audiences don’t want passive content anymore.

““It’s been an eye-opener every single time, but this year, our biggest learning was how deeply involved the consumer is. They no longer want to passively consume what you’re serving them—they want to be part of shaping how the game unfolds over those 4–5 hours.”

“We saw this play out every day for 2.5 months, through a variety of formats and platforms. Whether it was widescreen or vertical video, Sunday cohort feeds, or kids’ IPs brought to life through motion capture, the engagement was constant. It reinforced that delivering the game in a way fans understand and love is no longer optional-it’s essential,” he said.

With India firmly on the front foot, JioStar’s playbook proves one thing: the future of sport is no longer just played. It’s produced, personalised, and powered by fans.

  • Return of Rebel 2 & PK return Sony Max to top 10 prog list across genre

BENGALURU: The airing of The Return of Rebel 2 across Hindi Movies (Urban+Rural), Hindi Movies (Urban) and Hindi Movies (Rural) and PK along with Son of Satyamurthy in the Hindi Movies (Urban+Rual) and Hindi Movies (Urban) markets saw Son Max re-enter the Top 10 channels across genre All India (U+R): 2+ Individuals list for week 24 –(Saturday, 10 June 2017 to Friday, 16 June 2017). After the tenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 10) which commenced in week 14 of 2017, this Sony Pictures Network channel had had a small hiatus from BARC’s lists across genre for one week – week 23. Sony Max was placed at ninth rank in the list with 460.016 million weekly impressions in week 24 of 2017.

The Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) list of top 10 channels for week 24 has seen some shakeups and exits vis-à-vis the previous week (week 23).Since the past few weeks two Balaji Telefilm’s soaps on competing channels have given each other a tough fight in the ratings battle on Hindi GEC. For a few weeks the infinite length family drama Kumkum Bhagya on Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) flagship Hindi GEC Zee TV  had taken the ratings lead backed by strong viewership in the Hindi GEC (Urban+Rural) and the Hindi GEC (Urban) markets. However, as Balaji Telefilm’s second season of the finite length supernatural series Naagin 2 on Viacom 18’s Hindi flagship channel Colors approaches its closure, it has retaken the lead in the ratings tables in these markets over the past few weeks.

Cricket, of course has always been close to the heart of all Indians, and hence the presence of Star Sports 1 Hindi and DD National that broadcast the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in which India was one of the finalists, though a losing one.

While the top five channels from the Week 23 list have retained their rank and order, albeit with altered ratings in week 24, Zee Anmolclimbed up one rank to the sixth place while pushing its older peer channel Zee TV down to seventh place in week 24 from its previous week’s sixth rank. The Sun TV Network’s Telugu flagship channel Gemini TV maintained its eighth position of week 23 in week 24 while Sony Max and Colors (which also re-entered the list) pushed out DD National and Star Sports 1 from the top 10 channels list.

Please refer to the list below for BARC data for top 10 channels across genre for weeks 23 and 24.

YouTube has garnered a huge fan following not only in terms of the audience but also amongst original content creators in India. While YouTubers like All India Bakchod (AIB) and The Viral Fever (TVF) rose to superstardom, an array of new players also joined in to professionally create videos for YouTube. Even big screen celebrities were seen more open to experimenting with artists online.

  • National award winning Marathi film ‘Court’ is India’s entry for Oscars

National award winning Marathi film ‘Court’ is India’s entry for Oscars

NEW DELHI: The National Award winning Marathi film Court, written and directed by first-time filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane, is India’s official entry for the Oscars in the foreign language category.

The decision was taken by a 16-member committee headed by Amol Palekar set up by the Film Federation of India (FFI), which met in Hyderabad. Other contenders included MasaanPK and Baahubali.

Court, which has already been to several international film festivals and won national and international awards, is the story of a radical poet who is accused of waging war against the state. It follows the never-ending trial of a balladeer who is accused of encouraging a municipal worker to commit suicide through his fiery songs. The multi-lingual arthouse drama examines the Indian judicial system from the perspectives of the accused, the lawyer defending him, the public prosecutor, and the judge presiding over the case.

Court was premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2014 where it won the Lion of the Future Award for the best first feature as well as the top prize in the non-competitive Horizons category. Court also won the National Award for Best Feature Film at this year’s National Film Awards.

The movie’s cast includes its producer Vivek Gomber, Marathi stage veteran Geetanjali Kulkarni, and Vira Sathidar. It has been shot by Mrinal Desai and edited by Rikhav Desai. Tamhane and Gomber are in Japan at the Fukoka International Film Festival where the film is being screened.

This is the third Marathi film to be sent for the Oscars. The first was Sandeep Sawant’s Shwaas in 2004, while the second was Harichandrachi Factory by Paresh Mokakshi.

India has never won an Academy Award in the best foreign language movie category though it has figured in the nominations thrice: for Mehmoob Khan’s Mother India, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay and Ashuthosh Gowarikar’sLagaan.
