    Weekend Top Five blaze the box office with Pixar’s Monstr University at No 1e

    MUMBAI: As the Hollywood Box office unleashed two new tentpoles, Roland Emmerich‘s White House Down and Paul Feig‘s The Heat, the top five grossing the weekend opening have changed. Although the new releases have taken over last weeks World War Z and Man of Steel, the animation dramaMonsters University seems to be sailing strong at the number One position. Sandra Bullock‘s comedy action The Heat confirms the second position followed closely byWhite House Down at number three.

    As per Fandango, Bullock‘s comedyThe Heat sold over 50 per cent more advance tickets than Feig‘s previous project, Bridesmaids. An interesting Fandango survey revealed that 88 per cent of ticket buyers wanted more female-oriented laughter. Based on the Thursday opening and Friday‘s weekend collections, Pixar‘s second highest grossing prequel Monsters University raked in nearly $17 million pushing its worldwide grossing to $173.7 million and counting. Sources from the industry predict the animation flick will cross the $200 million mark by this weekend. However the coming week looks bleak as Illumination Entertainment‘s sequel Despicable Me 2 hits the screens on 3 July.

    Over the two day run, The Heat minted nearly $41 million while Emmerich‘s catastrophic action White House Down grossed over $33.3 million.

    At the number four position, Brad‘s Zombie flick amasses a fair $32.5 million followed last by the red capped Kryptonian reboot Man of Steel at $ 21.5 million. The $225 million dollar high octane superhero flick has grossed nearly $450 million, however with stiff competition in the coming week, Man of Steel may be pushed out from the Top five.

    Pixar to woo Chinese audience with Asian premier of Monster’s University

    MUMBAI: Pixar‘s Monster‘s University, a sequel to the 2001 Monster Inc. is slated to release in China as the curtain raiser of the Shanghai International Film Festival on June 15.

    The 3-D animation comedy will release in the Chinese version with Xu Zheng voicing the protagonist blue haired monster Sulley and He Jiong, voicing the single eyed green monster Mike.

    The Lost in Thailand director-star Xu Zheng‘s roped in by He Jiong has gained immense popularity in the country with his prestige and reputation as the man behind the highest-grossing domestic release in China. The comedy raked in $203.9 million (1.25 billion yuan) during its three-month run at the box office from December 2012 to February 2013 as stated by Hollywood Reporter.

    The actor-singer He Jiong has too achieved fame for his 10-year stint as host of Happy Family, one of the most popular TV variety shows in the country. The premier of Monster University is a move by the American animator Pixar to push the movie in China. A collection of the animation studio‘s previous short films will also be shown during the festival.

    Pixar has yet to announce Monsters University‘s release date in the country. The film is imported into China as one of the 34 "shared-revenue” films allowed into the country every year.

    The animated comic movie is slated to premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival on June 8, followed by screenings at the Sydney (June 10) and Los Angeles (June 18) festivals before its opening wide screening in the U.S. on June 21, a week after Warner Bros‘ Man of Steel is slated to release.

    MUMBAI: Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger revealed a picture of Disney and Pixar’s latest computer-animated movie titled Wall-E, in a letter to shareholders. Reportedly, the movie will be released in June 2008.

    Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton will direct Wall-E, whose storyline revolves around a robot.

    Slated to hit theaters this year is Disney-Pixar’s next feature film Ratatouille, which tells the tale of a rat living living in Paris.

    MUMBAI: Apple Computers’ has announced that the iTunes Music Store will carry movies from The Walt Disney Co. studios. This was in conjunction with the launch of their online movie service on 12 September 2006.

    As announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, more than 75 films will be available from Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax. New releases will be priced at $12.99 (euro10.22), when pre-ordered and during the first week of sale, or $14.99 (euro11.79) afterward. Library titles will be sold for $9.99 (euro7.86) each, informs an official release.

    Similar services like Amazon’s movie service which was launched last week, signed distribution deals with seven studios however, excluded Disney.

    In addition, Jobs also showcased a device that will make it easier for consumers to watch the videos on television. The gadget, dubbed iTV will allow consumers to watch movies purchased online as well as other digital content stored on a computer on a connected television set. It will be available for $299 (euro235) by early next year.

    Jobs also announced a new iPod nano with a 24-hour battery life and new games for the portable media player. The new iPods will come in five colors, and will priced between $149 (euro117) and $249 (euro196), adds the release.

    MUMBAI: Speakers of Pixar, Endemol, Talpa, Craigslist, Second Life and MySpace will headline Picnic ’06. The media event takes place in Holland from 26 to 30 September 2006.

    The event will focus on creativity in cross media content and technology, specifically in the fields of entertainment and communication.

    The speakers will include Endemol co-founder John de Mol, who also founded Talpa, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and MySpace senior VP marketing Europe Jamie Kantrowitz. The event will showcase content delivered via TV, the Internet, mobile phones, gaming, virtual reality and music services.
