MGM plans Pink Panther reboot with Julie Andrews

MUMBAI: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)’s chairman and CEO Gary Barber and president of motion picture group Jonathan Glickman announced on 31 March that it is currently in the process for producing a full-length hybrid animation and live-action feature film based on the animated Pink Panther character.

Walter Mirisch, executive producer of the original Pink Panther films and television series will serve as the producer of the new film, along with Academy Award-winning actress, Julie Andrews (The Princess Diaries), wife of the late director Blake Edwards. David Silverman (The Simpsons Movie, Monsters, Inc.) will direct.  The Pink Panther character originated a remarkable fifty years ago.

The new caper film will focus on the character, rather than inspector Clouseau, and will reminisce back to the tone shared by the original Friz Freleng and David De Patie cartoons as well as that of Blake Edwards’ films.

“We are incredibly proud to re-introduce the Pink Panther to a brand new generation in such a fresh way. Even more exciting is the chance to work again with our dear friends Walter Mirisch and Julie Andrews, as well as the talented David Silverman, whose enthusiasm convinced us to ‘Think Pink!’,” said Glickman in a press statement.

“I am delighted that the legacy of Blake’s iconic Pink Panther franchise will continue to grow in its new hybrid form. It is exciting that the quintessential ‘next step’ for our beloved Panther will be enjoyed by a fourth generation of audiences. I feel that Blake is encouraging us on,” said Andrews in the statement.

For fifty years, the Pink Panther has been one of the most beloved characters in the history of film. There are a select few animated characters who have reached the level of popularity and longevity that the Pink Panther has achieved.  Next to James Bond, The Pink Panther movie franchise is one of the longest running in cinematic history, boasting 11 feature films, spanning five decades. The films have won 2 Academy Awards, 2 Golden Globe Awards and the Grammy Award-winning theme song by the legendary music composer Henry Mancini (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) still stands today as one of the greatest themes of all time.

New York city honours Shabana Azmi

MUMBAI: New York city has honoured legendary actress Shabana Azmi with a ‘Proclamation by the City of New York‘ for her contribution to cinema and her involvement with the movie industry there.

Azmi becomes the first Indian actor to receive the honour.

Azmi, 61, was presented with the proclamation by Patricia Kaufman, executive director of Motion Picture and Television Development from the office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as well as with a ‘Certificate of
Special Congressional Recognition‘ by New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney.

Describing Azmi as a “woman of extraordinary achievement hailing from a country rich in culture and traditions,” said Kaufman.

The proclamation also applauded her work as a social activist, noting that apart from being a “highly respected” advocate for social justice, she has worked tirelessly for other causes, including funding for displaced Kashmiri migrants and relief for victims of the Latur earthquake.

The proclamation added that her presence on the board of the arts organisation Indo-American Arts council (IAAC) has inspired hundreds of Indian film makers in the New York area for over a decade.

Azmi has served as an advisory board member of the annual New York Indian Film Festival, established by the IAAC in 2000. The annual film festival, which brings together feature films and documentaries from and about the Indian subcontinent, will be held this year from May 23 to 27.

Azmi lauded the IAAC and its co-founder Aroon Shivdasani for creating a space in North America for Indian and diaspora-related films.”The fact that the New York City Council recognises my work in cinema becomes a means of saying that Indian cinema is what we recognise because I am who I am because of my first primary identity of being an Indian film actor. It becomes a peg on which you can create greater visibility,” Azmi observed.

Azmi’s repertoire of international work includes John Schlesinger‘s Madame Sousatzka, Nicholas Klotz‘s Bengali Night, Roland Joffe‘s City of Joy, and Blake Edwards‘ Son of the Pink Panther.

    The Pink Panther

The role of Inspector Clouseau was originally offered to Peter Ustinov. Despite being relatively unknown internationally, Peter Sellers was offered the part, and was paid 90,000 pounds

The film was intended to have The Phantom, Sir Charles Lytton’s character as the main character. However, this film and the sequels focused on the Character of Inspector Clouseau as Peter Sellers’ portrayal of the same was extremely loved by the crew and the audience

An animated Pink Panther was created for the opening credits because writer and director Blake Edwards felt that the credits would benefit from some kind of cartoon character. The Pink Panther character was chosen from over a hundred alternative panther sketches. The Pink Panther introduced in the opening credits became a popular film and television character in his own right.

    A Shot in the Dark

The movie was completed before The Pink Panther (1963), but shelved because the studio didn’t think it was any good. The success of the first film made the executives decide to release the shelved film. This also explains the short time span between the release of the first film and this one.

This was the only official Clouseau film not to use the name “Pink Panther” nor use that cartoon character in the opening credits.

Peter Sellers was the first ever male to appear on the cover of Playboy magazine, in April 1964.

    The Party

The only Blake Edwards -Peter Sellers collaboration that was not a Pink Panther film.

During the scene in which Peter Sellers wrecks the upstairs bathroom, the band downstairs can be heard playing “It Had Better Be Tonight,” which was originally written and used both as a vocal and as an instrumental score in the first “Pink Panther” film.

This was said to be Elvis Presley’s favorite movie.

    What’s New Pussy Cat?

The scene where Woody Allen’s character celebrates his birthday on the wharf was filmed on December 1, 1964 – Woody’s 29th birthday

Banned in Norway because of a scene where Peter Sellers tries to commit suicide by burning himself wrapped in a Norwegian flag.

When Woody Allen turned in his script it did not have a title. It stayed this way until one day he overheard Warren Beatty, talking to one of the hundreds of gorgeous women he was seeing at the time. His usual greeting of “What’s new, pussycat?” was heard by Allen who screamed out “title!”

Get ready to rediscover Peter Sellers and fall in love with the best collection of his great comedies every Monday night on Perfect 10.
