Rathore urges govt. officials to aggressively use social media

NEW DELHI: Taking a cue from Prime Minister Modi’s effective use of social media, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (MIB) Rajyavardhan Rathore’s message to his officials is use social media aggressively for disseminating information on government.

“We need to open up. Typically, governments have been with iron curtains all around. But today time is changing, so we first need to change our mindset,” A PTI report quoted Rathore as saying today.

The junior MIB minister was inaugurating a workshop for government officials in Press Information Bureau (PIB) on how to use Facebook more effectively for communication.

PIB is the public relations division of the government and its official under a director-general are entrusted with disseminating information on government initiatives.

Addressing PIB officials, the PTI report states, Rathore advised that the process of how information is shared from decision makers to disseminators needs to get faster and social media can play a key role as it not only shapes debates on TV but also public opinion.

According to the minister, “You cannot hide information in today’s world. You have to share that information. The idea is to send the right kind of content that people can engage with.”

Pointing out that often incorrect information regarding ministries and government departments goes on social media,  Rathore advised that on such occasions the correct facts should be provided.

“That is the time you could get to the social media and correct that information. People are hungry for information,” Rathore is said to have opined as per the PTI report.

The minister compared old and present times regarding communications. He said had it been older times pigeons would have to used for communicating and the head of PIB would have had maximum number of pigeons, hinting at the amount of communication that a government undertakes as part of its outreach programme.

A lot of people dismiss social media, saying the debate going on there is “junk”, he said but emphasised that this very debate shapes what is reported on television and in the print media.

“It is shaping your mind when you sit on the dining table during dinner time and do your discussions,” he is quoted as having said.

The minister pointed out that 85 per cent of federal ministers were on Facebook and 80 per cent ministries already have verified FB accounts.

Referring to PM Modi’s love for technology and effective use of social media, Rathore says the “coach has shown the way and it is now for the athelets to act.”

Interestingly when Rathore was questioned on Twitter for this government support to a private enterprise (Facebook) as being strange, the minister tweeted back saying: “Yes, but all communication tools, public/ private need to be utilised for empowering & enhancing outreach.”

Facebook executives were present on the occasion.

  • PIB under deluge over photoshopped image of Modi’s Chennai aerial survey

PIB under deluge over photoshopped image of Modi’s Chennai aerial survey

NEW DELHI: Deluged by Twitter and other social media websites, the Government today apologised for the mistake in the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aerial survey over flooded Chennai caused by what it called “photoshopping” by merging two pictures “due to error of judgement.”

The photo had shown Modi looking out of the helicopter at very clear view of flooded houses in residential areas, which was not possible from a helicopter at the height at which it was said to be flying over the southern metro that has seen the worst rainfall since 1918.

The photograph was removed as soon as the error was realised, a senior official of the Press Information Bureau told Indiantelevision.com.

The photo was one of seven, which had been released on the PIB Twitter handle and PIB’s website last evening.

“PIB regrets the release of the picture. Inconvenience caused is regretted,” a post on the PIB website said.

Modi had made an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of Chennai, its suburbs and Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. He arrived from Delhi at naval working station INS Rajali in Arakkonam, about 60 km from Chennai.

In fact, the photoshopped image is still appearing on many Twitter handles, raising several questions since private media is often not allowed to accompany the PM on such aerial surveys.

The faux pas led to a large number of comments and cast a shadow on the reliability of official media.

The calendar combines the conventional and technological modes of communicating the initiatives of the government. While the theme of ‘Swachh Bharat’ is portrayed visually in the conventional mode, the mobile application of the calendar reiterates the government’s vision of taking the idea of ‘Digital India’ forward.

Jaitley said, “The digital version of the calendar 2015 reflects the vision of the government in taking forward the benefit of technology in information dissemination as no one could defy the growth and movement of technology. Technology today was operating on a real time basis.”

CBFC gets CEO in Railways’ Rakesh Kumar

MUMBAI: The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has finally found its CEO.  Rakesh Kumar, who is currently a senior Divisional Personnel Officer in the Indian Railways Personnel Service (IRPS) in Vadodara has been chosen as the new CEO for three years. He steps into the shoes of former CEO Pankaja Thakur, who completed her three year term on 20 September 2013.

Press Information Bureau (PIB) Mumbai director Manish Desai had been given additional responsibility as CEO following Thakur’s departure. The CBFC had been CEO-less for almost a decade and had been run by its chairpersons until Thakur joined in 2010.

Kumar was selected after a long process for which the CBFC received many applications. About five to seven officials were shortlisted to be interviewed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and CBFC chairperson Leela Samson.

Kumar is on a Central Stopping Deputation, which means he will be on deputation to the CBFC for three years, and after that he may resume his current job. According to official sources, the appointment order came in yesterday and Kumar is set to join within a fortnight.

PIB’s Manish Desai becomes interim CEO CBFC

MUMBAI: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is soon to see a change of face. 20 September was outgoing CEO Pankaja Thakur’s last day in office. PIB Mumbai Director Manish Desai has been roped in to oversee the board till the time a new CEO is appointed. He has taken charge of the CBFC from today.
    Manish Desai

The government had issued notice in national newspapers calling candidates to apply for the post. Once the due process of going through the applications and interviews is completed, the ministry of information and broadcasting will approve the successor to Thakur which could take some time. Till then, Desai will hold additional charge as CEO while continuing with his responsibility as director of PIB (Mumbai). He, however, is not one of the applicants for the post.

Talking about the dual post, Desai says: “Since the two offices are not far off I will try to do justice to both by managing my time.”

Thakur took charge of a post that had been kept vacant for nearly ten years in 2010. Before that it was the chairpersons who overlooked the CBFC. Thakur has faced severe criticism from the film fraternity for her decisions but has also received support from certain parts of the industry. Leela Samson is the current chairperson of the CBFC.
