  • Star Movies builds up to the New Year with ‘Robomania’

    Mumbai, December 6, 2005: Its part man…part machine…but all cop…it’s the future of law enforcement! Sci-fi movie lovers are in for a special treat this December as Star Movies bids goodbye to the year with the exclusive screening of Robomania, highlighting some of the all time favorite robot movies every Saturday night at 9 p.m.!     Starting December 10th, Star Movies will showcase the first part of the action-packed Trilogy of RoboCop. The story of androids on the silver screen cannot pass without a mention of this contemporary classic. This movie talks about the aftermath of economic and moral collapse, which led to city with cesspool of crime and anarchy, forcing the under funded police to fall under the stewardship of corporate juggernaut OCP. In his first day patrolling Old Detroit, feared gang leader Clarence Boddicker kills officer Alex Murphy. OCP scientists are able to use Murphy’s remains to build a cybernetic soldier codenamed Robocop. Dubbed the future of law enforcement, Robocop begins a one-man war on crime. When memories of his former life begin to surface, Robocop becomes obsessed with tracking down Boddicker and claiming revenge, even as his handlers try to rein him in.

    Considered by many critics to be one of the best films of its genre, this Classic was followed by two sequels, which will be aired on December 17, and 24, 2005.

    Race into the future, on New Year’s Eve by tuning into the revolutionary robots-in-revolt thriller I, Robot, where a man must uphold the law and keep the machines in check.     The Day After Tomorrow takes a big-budget, special-effects-filled look at what the world would look like if the greenhouse effect and global warming continued at such levels that they resulted in worldwide catastrophe and disaster. At the center of the story is a paleoclimatologist (a scientist who studies the ways weather patterns changed in the past), Professor Jack Hall, who tries to save the world from the effects of global warming while also trying to get to his son, Sam, who was in New York City when it was overwhelmed by the chilling beginnings of the new Ice Age.     – Roland Emmerich confided that the Statue of Liberty would be turned over by the force of the massive amount of water flowing around it but said he wanted to create a symbol of American values that stood up to the forces.

    – The US Army loaned several UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters for the rescue scene at the end, prompting the Canadian authorities to reassure the people of Montreal that they weren’t being invaded by America.

    – Before the film was released, N.A.S.A. sent a memo out to all of its employees stating that they were not allowed to comment on the likelihood of the events portrayed in this movie, but later rescinded the restriction. The consultation by NASA scientists was requested before the filming of the movie, but NASA stated that the events in the film were too ridiculous to actually occur, and hence denied the request.

    – The footage shown on TV of the blizzard storm in the UK is taken from an actual news report in January 2002.

  • PCCW, Star, ESS sign multi-year carriage agreement in Hong Kong

    MUMBAI: PCCW, Star Group and ESPN Star Sports (ESS) announced yesterday that they have entered into an agreement for the carriage of ESPN, Star Sports, National Geographic Channel, Phoenix Chinese Channel, Phoenix InfoNews Channel, Star Movies and ESS Cricket Channel on PCCWs now Broadband TV.

    Under the agreement, ESPN and Star Sports will be broadcast exclusively on now Broadband TV starting from 17 August. With the addition of these channels, now Broadband TV viewers will receive a total number of 58 channels (43 TV channels and 15 digital music channels).

    A new and significant arrangement is for ESS to be progressively localised into Cantonese; whilst also balancing the needs and demands for leading sports from Hong Kongs English speaking audience.
