    Debra O’Connel to preside over ABC National Sales

    MUMBAI: American Broadcasting Company (ABC) executive Debra O’Connell has been promoted to president of ABC National Television Sales, it was announced today by Rebecca Campbell, president of the ABC Owned Television Stations Group. She succeeds John Watkins, who previously announced that he will retire at the end of January.

     

    ABC National Television Sales is the sales and marketing arm of the ABC Owned Television Stations Group. Ms. O’Connell will be responsible for national advertising sales at ABC’s eight owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh-Durham and Fresno as well as their extensive digital platforms, The Live Well Network and ABC Regional Sports & Entertainment Sales. ABC National Television Sales has nine regional sales offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit and Boston.

     

    Ms. OConnell has been with ABC for 17 years. She was previously senior vice president of sales for ABC National Television Sales, a position to which she was named in 2011. Prior to that, she served as senior vice president of Multimedia Sales and Marketing for the division from 2006-2011. She was also vice president of Marketing at WABC-TV in New York, where she first joined the ABC Television division in 1999 after working at ABC Radio in Sales and Marketing.

     

    She began her career as an account executive for two of Liberty Broadcasting’s radio stations, and marketing director for DiCarlo Distributors.

     

    Ms. O’Connell serves as chairman of the Television Bureau of Advertising Sales Advisory Committee, as well as being an Executive Board Member, where she works with senior media & advertising executives to develop policy and new trends in the local broadcasting industry. She is also a member of Nielsen’s Local Alliance Committee. Ms. O’Connell is a mentor in The Walt Disney Company mentor program and is deeply involved in the ABC NTVS internship program.

    Imax theatres in the US sell out for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

    MUMBAI: Imax theatres in the US are reporting sell-outs of its ‘Star Trek Into Darkness‘ sneak peek shows on 15 May with showings in Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Austin, San Francisco, Houston, San Diego and Minneapolis now at capacity.
     
    Interest Paramount adds continues to be strong at other Imax locations across the US, which are offering fans the opportunity to be the first to see the film at 8.00 pm that evening. In response, Paramount Pictures has moved the film‘s Friday, 17 May release up a day to 16 May.
     
    Tickets are available on the film‘s movie app, a technology that allows users to delve deeper into the ‘Star Trek‘ universe, and can also be accessed via Imax.com or through Fandango.com, Movietickets.com, as well as other ticketing platforms and at theatre box offices.
     
    The Imax release of the film will feature approximately thirty minutes of footage filmed with the extremely high-resolution IMAX® cameras. These specific sequences will expand to fill more of the screen exclusively in Imax.

    Disney/ABC in deal with Katie Couric for talk show

    MUMBAI: US media conglomerate Disney/ABC Television Group (DATG) has signed a multi-year, multi-platform agreement with journalist and television personality Katie Couric to host and produce her own nationally syndicated talk show and to join the ABC News team.

    The programme will be distributed by Disney/ABC Domestic Television and will premiere in September 2012.  
         
      Couric, the former “Today” co-anchor who was most recently anchor and managing editor of the ‘CBS Evening News with Katie Couric’, a ‘60 Minutes’ correspondent and host of the weekly online interview series, @katiecouric, will be reunited with Jeff Zucker, who will be an executive producer on the yet-to-be-named syndicated series, which will be based in New York and produced in conjunction with Disney/ABC.

    In addition to hosting the new syndicated program, Couric will join the ABC News team, contributing to all programmes and platforms. Beginning this summer, Couric will anchor specials, contribute interviews, participate in special events coverage and bring her many talents to bear on some of the most important and interesting stories of the day.

    DATG president Anne Sweeney said, “Katie Couric is one of television’s iconic figures and we are thrilled to have forged such an exciting partnership with her. We look forward to having Katie join the best News team in the business, and to working with her to create a dynamic and successful talk show franchise.”

    Couric said, “I’m very happy to be returning to the network where I began my career as a desk assistant in 1979. It is tremendously exciting to have the creative freedom to develop my own show with Anne Sweeney, the Disney/ABC TV Group and Jeff, and to contribute to such a vibrant, innovative news division.”

    The eight ABC Owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh/Durham and Fresno, which represent nearly 23 per cent of the nation’s TV households, have already cleared the new show in the 3 pm time slot.

    As part of the announcement, the network is set to return the last hour of its Daytime network block to affiliates no earlier than September 2012, but continues to support “General Hospital,” and the plans to launch “The Chew” in September of this year and “The Revolution” in January 2012.
