  • When ads are better than soaps!

When ads are better than soaps!

    By Ramanujam Sridhar

It’s that time of year when we reflect on the old year, As an avid television viewer (and may my tribe flourish), I continue to find TV commercials often more entertaining than the soaps and serials my wife seems glued to. The advertising industry realizes that the remote control is an even more potent destroyer of poor advertising than clients and is hence pushing the envelope more and more to ensure that we don’t switch channels. Social issues have been sensitively portrayed and subtle brand messages conveyed. What better tribute to creativity than the Tanishq remarriage ad. Beautifully shot, it shows a woman doing the saat phere with her husband even as a child keeps calling her and trying to join the holy walk. We realize that it is the woman’s daughter from her first marriage perhaps, and the husband cheerfully asks the child to join in. Commercials like these need a lot of courage to create and more importantly, run, and I doff my hat to my friends in advertising and marketing who have the guts to push the envelope in more ways than one. The Google ad for Tanjore paintings is another one that created ripples as did some of the commercials for Idea Cellular and the latest Vodafone video streaming ad is as cute as advertising can get.

    Advertising which sucks

And yet, I find a lot of advertising quite convoluted, where the idea seems to be stretched needlessly like some of the TV soaps that have long outlived their sell by date. The new campaigns for Fevikwik – a brand that had great advertising for years – seem to be that of an agency and a creative team which is too full of itself. Equally annoying are the new five star commercials. Some of the big budget ones like Pepsi’s much touted ‘Yes Abhi’ too hardly set the Indian pulse racing. While celebrity endorsements keep multiplying, there seems to be an inverse relationship between the amount paid to the celebrity by way of fees and the creativity of the commercials that they are involved in. Why are advertising agencies giving up so easily on celebrity scripts and coming up with such inane stuff?

    What’s with the programming?

I am not a great follower of TV programming so I really should be the last person to complain, but our big anchors are becoming quite insufferable as they play God, passing judgments on people and events with impunity. They also seem to flit from topic to topic with the attention span of a few days and issues are just buried as they worry least about sensitivities and only about TRPs. Soaps are extended mindlessly for ages on end, timings are changed, characters dumped, and just about every possible character mayhem is managed with ease. The sports programming that I watch a lot is really cloying as India is shown to be the greatest superpower of all time based on a few home series wins and it seems really weird given the poor performances abroad.

    To hell with editorial responsibility

The old issues of ‘paid editorials’ and ‘irresponsible journalism’ continue to haunt poor viewers like me. Unfortunately, the TV channels don’t seem to care as they keep outwitting each other in their quest for TRPs and viewer eyeballs. Self regulation will never work and I guess, the time is right for viewers to be more discerning, more militant even, and when their sensitivities are not respected, we must exercise our rights and instead of switching channels, maybe the channels will learn only if we switch off the TV set entirely!

May that never come to pass however! Here’s wishing you all a wonderful year of TV viewing!

  • IPL 6 sponsors benefit significantly; Pepsi gets highest recall: Ormax Trac20

MUMBAI: The sponsors of the sixth edition of Indian Premiere League (IPL) are to benefit significantly from the tournament, Pepsi being the bigger gainer, Ormax Trac20 report stated.

The findings of the pre-phase of Ormax Trac20, a syndicated research being conducted by media insights firm Ormax Media, revealed that Pepsi seems to have the ball out of the park even before the tournament started.

As per the findings, the average number of sponsors recalled at an unaided level per respondent stood at a healthy 3.2, more than double compared to previous years.

Title sponsors Pepsi contributed significantly to this performance, with an unaided recall of 82 per cent even before the tournament started. DLF, the title sponsors till last year, scored less than 50 per cent on recall in the previous seasons of IPL.

Other sponsors with high unaided recall are Vodafone (37 per cent) and franchise sponsors Nokia (32 per cent).

Ormax Media CEO Shailesh Kapoor said, “This phase of the research was conducted in the fortnight leading upto the start of IPL 6. Such high recall levels are indicative of the strong association a brand like Pepsi has managed to build with the tournament, despite this being their first year of association. It is evident that the brand fit between Pepsi and the IPL has worked this year.”

The Ormax Trac20 research is being conducted across 11 cities, in three phases, with a total sample size of 9,000: Pre-phase before the IPL started, mid-phase during the IPL and post-phase at the end of the tournament. The findings of the pre-phase have been released for the subscribers.

In the new Pepsi IPL commercial Gayle manages to convince Chopra, a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fan, to support his team but with a little help from Pepsi. Chopra plays an over-the-top spiritual diva in the commercial who leads her followers to pray for CSK win but ends up supporting Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) due to the Gayle-effect and the irrepressible temptation of a chilled Pepsi.

  • Pepsi dominates social media conversations during IPL6

MUMBAI: Pepsi‘s aggressive Rs 1.5 billion marketing pitch around the Indian Premier League (IPL) seems to be paying rich dividends. Powered by GroupM‘s Social Hub, the weekly update will present analysis of the social chatter around the IPL. The study covers the complete spectrum of social media – Twitter, Facebook, blogs and message boards.

MEC India MD T Gangadhar said, “Multi-screen engagement is a reality today and social media chatter is a terrific indication of how invested we are in premier TV events like the IPL. This study throws up interesting insights with regard to teams, players and brands and can be enormously useful for advertisers seeking to ride the IPL wave.”

When it comes to IPL franchises, Mumbai Indians dominate the conversations with a 22 per cent share of buzz, followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with 19 per cent. IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders has just 5 per cent share of the conversations on Twitter.

Nothing demonstrates this more than IPL6, where platforms like Twitter and FB are becoming conversation capital and virtual stadiums during the game. The opportunities for advertisers to join these conversations organically are priceless.”

These team partnerships, along with the title sponsorship and the robust on-air, on-line and on-ground plans will ensure maximum visibility and engagement for PepsiCo’s brands.

While activations with Delhi Daredevils will be led by both Pepsi and Mountain Dew; Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors will be led by Pepsi; Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab by Mountain Dew; Chennai Super Kings, The Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore by 7UP. We are thrilled to announce our association with the eight franchise teams and will continue to build a campaign that will change the face of sport sponsorships and activations in India. Cricket lovers can look forward to a lot more excitement, never before experiences and a memorable sporting season.”

PepsiCo has also signed the Co-Presenting broadcast sponsorship deal with Multi Screen Media (MSM), owners of the Max channel that will be broadcasting Pepsi-IPL 2013. Apart from a strong on-air play of its portfolio, PepsiCo is working on a series of customised innovations with MSM to maximise its association with the broadcaster.

  • Multi Screen Media eyes strong ad rev growth from IPL

MUMBAI: Multi Screen Media‘s (MSM) strategy of reducing ad rates for the sixth edition of the IPL appears to be paying off. It has already roped in nine sponsors and is looking for two more. For its wrap around show ‘Extraaa Innings‘, it has also got in seven sponsors compared to six last year.

MSM president network sales, licensing and telephony Rohit Gupta said, “We reduced our rates by 10 per cent. This has helped old clients return and we have also got new companies on board. We have managed to get into new conversations. In a slowdown economy, advertisers want minimum risk. We are looking for a revenue increase of at least 25-30 per cent. So far we have sold around 70 per cent and there are still three more weeks to go for the tournament to start. The plan is to hold back 15-20 per cent and sell it at a higher rate once the event starts.”

The co-presenting sponsors are Pepsi and Vodafone. The seven associate sponsors are Tata Photon, Samsung Mobile, Panasonic, Havells, Usha Appliances, Karbonn Tablets and Godrej.

“We are looking for two more associate sponsors since there is a healthy demand. We are happy that our strategy has resulted in Samsung and Godrej coming back. Panasonic and Usha Appliances have come on board for the first time.”

As far as â€?Extraaa Innings‘ is concerned, MSM has got Amul, eBay, Titan, Nivea, Renault, V Guard and Nestle as sponsors for the IPL. It has sold packages like fall of wickets which has been taken by Luminous, and action replay which has been taken by ACC and Amity. There are also several spot buyers with whom MSM has done deals with including Coca-Cola, Parle Agro, Marico, Nikon, Sony India, Berger Paints, ibibo.com and Airtel.

“The IPL‘s reach has seen a steady growth. If you look at other recent series like India versus Pakistan, it disappointed with the ratings being much less than what was expected by the industry. With Six having a Hindi feed, IPL advertisers will get even more reach. Our marketing campaign has started. Pepsi is also doing a lot of activation. The BCCI is marketing the property. All of this is creating a lot of buzz in the market. The opening ceremony in Kolkata should set the tone for the event,” Gupta said.

Vivaki Exchange CEO Mona Jain said that MSM should make Rs. 1.5 billion extra this year as their inventory would get sold out. “I expect the IPL to garner around Rs 8.5 billion this year compared to Rs 7 billion last time. A lot of youth and male focussed brands have come on board. What is seen is that Hindi GECs and Hindi news channels lose share during the event. Males watch those genres less when the IPL is on. So clients try to make up for that. Nobody is splurging. It is just that some companies feel that the IPL is a necessary platform to be on. Others who have less marketing outlay are more conservative. Brand visibility is the main reason to be on the IPL. Companies will use the IPL as a platform to launch new products. For a company like Pepsi, this isthe period where their product is consumed heavily.”

Gupta, however, expects MSM to rake in around Rs 10 billion this year.

LodestarUN CEO Shashi Sinha said that it is not just the rate reduction that has seen clients come on board. “The environment is also different. There is no World Cup this time around unlike 2011. Also companies have put their marketing plans in place. The channel will do well.”
