    Despite lower income, releases in Q1-2014 help Eros post higher PAT for Q2-2014

    BENGALURU:  Eros International Media Limited (Eros) posted 12.8 per cent lower revenue for Q2-2014 at Rs 201.47 crore as compared to the Rs 231.05 crore for Q2-2013 and 3.7 per cent higher than the Rs 194.2 crore for Q1-2014. However, Eros’s PAT (after minority) for Q2-2014 at Rs 36.9 crore (PAT margin 18.4 per cent) was 41.8 per cent higher than the PAT of Rs 26.08 crore (PAT margin 11.4 per cent) in Q2-2013 and 26.2 per cent more than the Rs 29.3 crores (PAT margin 15.1 per cent) in Q1-2014.

     

    Eros Managing Director Sunil Lulla said, “Eros has given strong financial and operational performance in the first half of the fiscal, especially, given that we have had no high budget releases in the first half of FY 2014 compared to two high budget releases in the first half of FY 2013. The company’s performance was underpinned by the all-round success of movies like Grand Masti, Raanjhaana, Go Goa Gone and our overseas release of Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani all of which have been monetised over multiple distribution channels.”

     

    The company says that its performance during HY1-14 was also backed by other overseas releases like Furkey, Lootera, Shootout at Wadala, Ek thi Dhayan, Phata Poster Nikla Hero and within the country through regional films such as Rangeelay (Punjabi) and Tamil films. Also, television revenues for Q2-2014 were mainly underpinned by a combination of catalogue monetisation as well as delivering new films under the previously announced licensing agreement with Viacom 18.

     

    Let us look at the other HY1-2014 and Q1-2014 figures posted by Eros:

     

    Overall for HY1-2014, PAT at Rs 66.31 crore was 15.3 per cent higher than the Rs 57.49 crore Eros had reported for Q2-2013, despite releasing only 26 films (11 Hindi and 15 Tamil) in HY1-2014. In Q1-2014, Eros had 12 releases, in Q2-2014, IT HAD 14. In HY1-2013, Eros had had 42 releases.

     

    Total Expense for Q2-2014 at Rs 103.8 crore was 42.2 per cent lower than the Rs 179.51 crore for Q2-2013 and 4.2 per cent lower than the Rs 108.31 crore in Q1-2014. Direct cost for Q2-2014 at Rs 139.36 crore was 17.8 per cent lower than the Rs 169.07 crore for Q2-2013, but 6.1 per cent higher than the Rs 131.38 crore for Q1-2014.

     

    Interest cost for Q2-2014 at Rs 6.2 crore was more than double (2.26 times) the Rs 2.74 crore for Q2-2013 and 34.5 per cent more than the Rs 4.61 crore in Q1-2014. Other expense for Q2-2014 at Rs 11.8 crore was 42.8 per cent lower than the Rs 20.63 crore for Q2-2013 and 23.6 per cent lower than the Rs 15.45 crore for Q1-2014.

     

    EBIT for Q2-2014 at Rs 50.31 crore was 16.4 per cent higher than the Rs 42.35 crore for Q2-2013 and 9.1 per cent more than the Rs 46.1 crores for Q1-2014.

     

    Said Lulla, “We remain excited about our collaboration with HBO Asia and the opportunity it presents among the premium television market within India. We are also looking forward to the high profile releases in the remainder of the fiscal year  such as Ram Leela, Kochadaiyaan, Happy Ending, and a number of smaller budget high concept movies that are slated to be released in the fiscal under review.”

     

    Eros says that its collaboration with HBO Asia continues to receive an encouraging response after the launch of its two new advertisement free channels in February 2013 – HBO Defined and HBO Hits that are not only available on Dish and Airtel DTH platforms, but also on digital cable platforms such as Hathway and GTPL.

     

    Further during Q2-2014, the company’s online entertainment portal Eros Now added a host of Bollywood titles acquired from UTV and Viacom to its movie subscription service.

    DB Corp and its radio business report good performance in Q2-2014, H1-2014

    BENGALURU: DB Corp Limited (DBCL), home to flagship newspapers Dainik Bhaskar, Divya Bhaskar, Dainik Divya Marathi and Saurashtra Samachar reported a good result for Q2-2014 and (Half Yearly) HY1-2014. Its total revenue has shown a growth of approximately 16 per cent y-o-y to Rs 441.8 crore in Q2-2014 against Rs 382.3 crore of Q2-2013. However, its income from operations in Q2-2014 at Rs 434.07 crore was 2.7 per cent lower that the Rs 446.15 crore in the preceding quarter Q1-2014.  

     

    Consolidated total revenue for HY1-2014 increased by 17 per cent to Rs 895.8 crore from Rs 763.8 crore in HY1-2013; Consolidated advertising revenue grew by 19 per cent in HY1-2014 to Rs 674.4 crore as against Rs 568.8 crore in HY1-2013.

     

    DBCL achieved consolidated EBIDTA margin of 28 per cent in HY1-2014 at Rs 248.9 crore registering a y-o-y growth of 44 per cent. Consolidated PAT margin at 15 per cent at Rs 13.63 crore registered a growth of 48 per cent on y-o-y basis.

     

    DB Corp’s radio business comprises of the brand “My FM” Radio station in seven states and 17 cities. Like last quarter (Q1-2104), it’s radio business advertising revenue which contributed to less than four per cent to the overall revenue, grew by 14 per cent to Rs 17.5 crore in Q2-2014, against Rs 15.4 crore in Q2 -2013. Last quarter (Q1-2014), its radio business reported advertising revenue of Rs17.3 crore. DB Corp’s radio business in Q2-2014 achieved PAT of Rs 1.9 crore, lower by 21 per cent than the PAT reported for the immediate last quarter’s (Q1-2014) Rs 2.4 crore. Its radio business EBIDTA stands at Rs 5.6 crore in Q2-2014.

     

     Let us take a look the other Q2-2014 results of DB Corp

     

    Overall, revenue from advertising reported a growth of about 17 per cent in Q2-2014 to Rs 329.7 from Rs 282.6 crore in Q2-2013. Its advertising revenue for Q2-2014 was about 4.4 per cent lower than the Rs 344.7 crore reported in the preceding quarter Q1-2014.

     

    DBCL’s total expense for Q2-2014 at Rs 340.3 crore was 13.2 per cent more than the Rs 300.6 crore for Q2-2013 and 4.4 per cent higher than Rs 325.91 crore for Q1-2014. Increase in raw material cost and other expense were the major reasons for the increase in DBCL’s expense. Higher raw material consumption cost at Rs 150.36 crore in Q2-2014 was higher by 13.4 per cent as compared to Rs 132.54 crore in Q2-2013 and 5.1 per cent higher than Rs 143.06 crore in Q1-2014. Other expense at Rs 102.5 crore 17.8 per cent higher than the Rs 87 crore for Q2-2013 and was five per cent higher than Rs 97.7 crore in Q1-2014.

     

    DBCL reported EBIDTA for Q2-2014 at Rs 111.6 crore (margin at 25 per cent), against Rs 90.1 crore, in Q2 -2013, registering a growth of 24 per cent y-o-y. The company says that this factors one time preoperative expenses of Rs 2 crore on the launch of Akola, Amravati in Maharashtra and Patna in Bihar and impact of forex (foreign exchange) loss of Rs 4.763 crore. Excluding the forex gain/ loss, EBIDTA has grown 36 per cent y-o-y from Rs 85.3 crore to Rs 116.3 crore. DBCL’s EBIDTA margins stand at 26 per cent on a stand-alone basis at Rs 113.4 crore.

     

    The company reported PAT for Q2-2014 at Rs 60.2 crore against Rs 48.6 crore in Q2-2013, showing growth of 24 per cent y-o-y. The same factors one-time pre-operative expenses of Rs 2 crore for Akola-Amravati and Patna launch as well as forex loss of Rs 5.712 crore. Excluding forex gain/loss, PAT has grown 50 per cent y-o-y from Rs 43.9 crore to Rs 65.9 crore.

     

    Its Print business reported PAT at Rs 60.2 crore (14.3 per cent PAT margin), after considering forex loss of Rs 5.79 crore.

     

    DB Corp managing director Sudhir Agarwal said: “We maintain our brand equity and leadership position in all our major markets and have made noteworthy progress in our performance in emerging editions particularly in Maharashtra where we have been vigorously driving in-market execution. We continue to actively explore expansion opportunities, as this quarter we launched our 7th edition of Divya Marathi from Amravati – a region with significant potential – high literacy rate and a rapidly developing workforce. We are excited and look forward to another challenging launch of Dainik Bhaskar’s Patna edition, which is on the anvil for this fiscal. Our digital platforms have been reporting consistent growth driven by strong viewer engagement strategies.”

    BENGALURU: Last year (FY-2013), the company entered the Rs 1000 crore club with revenue of Rs 1067.75 crore. In Q1-2014, three movies – Raanjhaana, Go Goa Gone (GGG) and Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani (YJHD) raked in the moolah at the box office for Eros International Media Limited (Eros).

     

    The company says that theatrical revenues during Q1-2014 have showcased the success of global releases of Raanjhaana, GGG and YJHD (Overseas). Raanjhaana achieved an impressive box office collection of Rs 100 crore worldwide; YJHD had an overseas collection of more than Rs 60 crore, while GGG had a worldwide collection of Rs 43 crore.

     

    Eros announced consolidated income for Q1-2014 at Rs 194.2 crore, 25.1 per cent lower than the Rs 259.3 crore during the corresponding period in 2013 (Q1-2013) and 9.2 per cent lower than the Rs 213.9 crore for Q4-2013 (q-o-q).

     

    During Q1-2014, Eros released 12 films – (seven Hindi and five Tamil and other regional languages), almost half of the 23 films – (five Hindi and 18 Tamil and other regional films) in Q1-2013 and almost a third less than the 17 films – (four Hindi and 13 Tamil and other regional films) in Q4-2013.

     

    Eros managing director Sunil Lulla said, “Eros has delivered an encouraging Q1-2014 result in context of the film mix that it released in the Q1-2013. Raanjhaana, YJHD and GGG all delivered at the box office and were subsequently monetised through other revenue streams as well. Relative to their budget, the mix of films performed extremely well and demonstrates our ability to scale and change our mix to take advantage of market trends.

     

    Let us look at some of Eros’ other figures for Q1-2014

     

    Expense for Q1-2014 at Rs 148.03 crore was 28.5 per cent lower than the Rs 207 crore for Q1-2013 and 14 per cent lower than the Rs 172.21 crore for Q4-2013.

    Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) for Q1-2014 at Rs 46.1 crore was 11.9 per cent lower than the Rs 52.3 crore for Q1-2013 and 10.4 per cent more than the Rs 41.75 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    PAT (after minority) for Q4-2014 at Rs 29.3 crore was 6.7 per cent lower than the Rs 31.4 crore in Q1-2013 and 7.9 per cent lower than the Rs 31.8 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Lulla said, “We are really excited about our collaboration with HBO and believe that the two premium channels will gain momentum with subscribers as we launch on further DTH and digital cable platform. The industry trends are testimony that premium content will be an important factor to drive demand and we are proud to be forerunners in that space.”

     

    “We continue to expand our film content through our diversified approach of acquiring a healthy mix of movies. Our current future slate remains well-funded and we have several high profile movies lined up like Kochadiyan, Ram Leela, Rambo Rajkumar, Happy Ending and a number of high concept movies that are slated to be released in FY-2014. Our business has a natural Q3 skew due to film releases around the festival season and this year is no different and we remain positive on the outlook for FY-2014,” added Lulla.

    Saregama Q1-2014 results subdued: Film & TV soaps segment profitable for first time

    BENGALURU: Saregama India Limited (Saregama) reported total income of Rs 35.81 crore, 5.01 per cent higher than the Rs 34.10 crore for Q1-2013, but 25.32 per cent lower than the Rs 25.32 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Saregama’s Film and TV serials segment reported a profit before interest and tax of Rs 0.37 crore for the first time in Q1-2014, hence adding to the company’s profit.

     

    Saregama reported a PAT of Rs 1.83 crore for Q1-2014 which was 27.38 per cent lower than the Rs 2.52 crore for Q1-2013 and 21.12 per cent lower than the Rs 2.32 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Let us look at Saregama’s other figures for Q1-2014

     

    The company’s net sales (net of excise duty) for Q1-2014 was Rs 12.82 crore, 12.55 per cent lower than the Rs 14.66 crore for Q1-2013 and 33.23 per cent lower than the Rs 19.20 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Saregama’s license fees income for Q1-2014 at Rs 22.96 crore was 19.27 per cent higher than the Rs 19.25 crore in Q1-2013, but 20 per cent lower than the Rs 28.71 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Saregama’s total expense for Q1-2014 at Rs 34.07 crore was 5.84 per cent more than Rs 32.19 crore y-o-y (as compared to Q1-2013), but 30.26 per cent lower than the Rs 48.85 crore q-o-q (as compared to Q4-2013).

     

    The company’s royalty payment for Q1-2014 at Rs 3.44 crore was 13.53 per cent more than the Rs 3.03 crore in Q1-2013, but was 10.18 per cent less than the Rs 3.83 crore paid in Q4-2013.

     

    Saregama’s provision for doubtful debts at Rs 2.11 crore was almost double the Rs 1.08 crore for Q1-2013, but less than a fifth (19.92 per cent) of the Rs 10.59 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Saregama paid Rs 2.21 crore towards advertisement and sales promotion for Q1-2014 which was more than double (2.1 times more) than the Rs 1.05 crore for Q1-2013 and 57.7 per cent lower as compared to the Rs 3.83 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Saregama’s cost of production of Films, television and portal at Rs 8.97 crore in Q1-2014 was 20.24 per cent more than the Rs 7.46 crore for Q1-2013 and 22.87 per cent lower than the Rs 11.63 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    The company’s profit from operations before other income, finance costs and exceptional items for Q1-2014 at Rs 1.74 crore was 8.9 lower than the Rs 1.91 crore for Q1-2013. For Q4-2013, Saregama’s incurred a loss from operations before other income, finance costs and exceptional items of Rs 0.90 crore.

     

    Saregama had other income of Rs 1.39 crore for Q1-2014 which was 48.87 per cent higher than the Rs 0.94 crore for Q1-2013 but less than a fourth (24.3 per cent) of the Rs 5.72 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Saregama paid 30.56 per cent lower interest cost of Rs 0.50 crore for Q1-2014 as compared to the Rs 0.72 crore for Q1-2013. Its interest cost of Rs 0.61 crore for Q4-2013 was 18.03 per cent higher than the interest cost for Q1-2014.

     

    Let us look at Sargama’s segment results for Q1-2014

     

    Saregama’s Music segment had revenue of Rs 25.09 crore which was 7.55 per cent lower than the Rs 27.14 crore in Q1-2013 and 28.13 per cent lower than the Rs 34.91 crore for Q4-2013. Profit before tax and interest expense from this segment at Rs 9.31 crore was 22 per cent lower than the Rs 11.94 crore for Q1-2013 and less than half (47.5 per cent) of the Rs 19.60 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Capital employed (segment assets minus segment liabilities) by Saregama’s Music segment for Q1-2014 at Rs 78.18 crore was 17.56 per cent higher than the Rs 66.5 crore and 3.2 per cent more than the Rs 75.75 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Revenue from Saregama’s Film and Television serials segment at Rs 10.72 crore was 54 per cent more than the Rs 6.96 crore in Q1-2013 but 17.8 per cent lower than the Rs 13.04 crore for Q4-2013. Capital employed by the Film and Television serials segment (segment assets minus segment liabilities) for Q1-2014 was Rs 17.62 crore, which was 6.23 per cent lower than the Rs 18.79 crore for Q1-2013 and 12.86 per cent lower than the Rs 20.22 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    As mentioned above, this segment returned a profit before interest and tax of Rs 0.37 crore for the first time in Q1-2014 as compared to the losses in previous quarters.

    BENGALURU: Indian cable TV distribution company Den Networks Limited (Den Networks) seems to be on a roll. Its cable business PBT in Q1-2014 was Rs 32.77 crore despite a 22 per cent rise in depreciation and finance costs as against Rs 36.81 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Den Networks cable business PBT in Q1-2014 was Rs 32.77 crore as compared to Rs 18.40 crore in Q1-2013, up 78 per cent y-o-y. The company’s PAT (before mark to market forex losses, exceptional one-time and ESOP expense) for Q1-2014 was Rs 19.22 crore versus Rs 17.04 crore in Q1-2013, a 13 per cent rise as compared to Q4-2013. After these adjustments, Den Networks cable business PAT stood at Rs 9.22 crore.

     

    Den Networks cable business EBITDA for Q1-2014 was Rs 85.84 crore as against. Rs 43.82 crore in Q1-2013, a 96 per cent y-o-y jump, and was seven per cent more than the Rs 80.33 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    The company’s consolidated EBITDA for Q1-2014 was Rs 87.68 crore, almost double (up by 95 per cent) the Rs 45.06 crore in Q1-2013, but only 3.22 per cent more than the Rs 84.94 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Let us look at Den Networks other figures for Q1-2014

     

    Den Networks’ consolidated revenue for Q1-2014 was Rs 275.42 crore as compared to the Rs 200.60 crore in Q1-2013, up by 37 per cent y-o-y, but was slightly lower (by 1.04 per cent) than the Rs 278.31 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    The cable distribution company’s consolidated PBT for Q1-2014 was Rs 34.49 crore while consolidated PAT for the quarter stood at Rs 10.15 crore which included the impact of mark-to-market forex losses of Rs 10 crore and higher depreciation and finance costs compared to Q4-2013.

     

    Den Networks cable business revenue for Q1- 2014 was Rs 262.85 crore as compared to the Rs 264.93 crore in Q4-2013. Revenues in Q4-2013 included Rs 15.10 crore on account of a one-time sale of Set Top Boxes (STBs). Excluding the impact of this sale, Den Networks cable business revenues grew by 5.2 per cent q-o-q (as compared to Q4-2013).

     

    Den Networks’ consolidated expenditure for Q1-2014 at Rs 187.74 crore was up 20.9 per cent as compared to the Rs 155.54 crore in Q1-2013, but was 2.9 per cent lower than the Rs 193.37 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Consolidated operation, administrative and other costs for Q1-2014 at Rs 160.70 crore were up 20.4 per cent as compared to the Rs 133.52 crore in Q1-2013 but 2.4 per cent lower than the Rs 164.68 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Den Networks consolidated Personnel cost for Q1-2014 at Rs 27.04 crore was 28 per cent more than the Rs 22.02 crore for Q1-2013, but 5.75 per cent lower than the Rs 28.69 crore in Q4-2013. Consolidated depreciation for Q1-2014 at Rs 33.22 crore was more than double (more by 113.5 per cent) as compared to the Rs 15.56 crore in Q1-2013 and 21.8 percent higher than the Rs 27.27 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Consolidated interest and other financial charges of Rs 19.97 crore were more than double the Rs 9.97 crore for Q1-2013 and 22.1 per cent more than the Rs 16.36 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Den Networks CEO S N Sharma said, “With the successful implementation of digitisation in Phase II cities, India is now firmly in the digital era. The overall response from consumers is extremely positive as they can now clearly perceive the benefits of digital and the superior experience associated with it. The major focus areas now are the completion of package selection by subscribers, collection of KYC data and the start of retail consumer billing, which are being spurred on by MSOs with a strong regulatory backing. These steps will truly complete our industry’s transformation into a B2C model. We are also drawing up plans for digitising our analog base in Phase III and IV cities while gearing up for our broadband foray.”

     

    Den Networks recently launched two digital cable channels – DEN Movies and DEN Classic, available to Den Network subscribers in selected areas. The company says that it sees the local cable channel segment become a potential growth area along with the spread of digitisation.

    Hinduja Ventures investments PAT up for Q1-2014

    BENGALURU: IndusInd Media & Communications Limited’s (IMCL) holding company Hinduja Ventures Limited (HVL) reported Rs 18.74 crore profit for Q1-2014, 10.41 per cent higher as compared to the Rs 16.97 crore for Q1-2013 and 16.43 per cent more as compared to the PAT for Q4-2013. Profit from HVL’s investments and treasury segment was eroded by losses from its media and communications segment, real estate segment and the others segment.

     

    Let us look at HVL’s results for Q1-2014

     

    HVL reported a net income from operations for Q1-2014 of Rs 26.62 crore for Q1-2014 which was 25.98 per cent higher than the Rs 21.13 crore for Q1-2013 and 32.72 per cent more than the Rs 20.05 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    HVL’s total expense for Q1-2014 at Rs 6.92 crore was almost triple (more by 189 per cent) the Rs 2.39 crore for Q1-2013 and 72.09 per cent higher than the Rs 40.22 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Revenue from media and communications segment fell by 25 per cent from Rs 1.46 crore in Q1-2013 Rs 1.09 crore. Loss from this segment more than quadrupled (went up by 308.01 per cent) from Rs (-1.08) crore in Q1-2013 to Rs (-4.40) crore in Q1-2014. This segment had reported a profit of Rs 0.6952 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Capital employed by this segment increased 1.1 per cent in Q1-2014 to Rs 97.44 crore from Rs 96.36 crore in Q1-2013 and was 1.8 per cent more than the Rs 95.75 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Revenue from investment and treasury segment recorded an increase of 29.75 per cent to Rs 25.52 crore in Q-2014 as compared to the Rs 19.67 crore for Q1-2013 and was 27.3 per cent more than the Rs 20.05 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    HVL’s investment and treasury segment posted a profit of Rs 24.43 crore which was 32.92 per cent more than the Rs 18.38 crore for Q1-2013 and 36.36 per cent more than the Rs 17.92 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    As mentioned above HVL’s real estate and ‘Others’ segment posted small numbers to erode the profits from the investment and treasury segment as mentioned above.

     

    HVL estimates that it has 8.5 million subscribers across 36 major cities. The company offers over 350 channels in the digital mode. It claims to have a backbone of over 10,000 kms of hybrid fiber optic network through which it also offers broadband services with its national ISP license. IMCL has gone ahead with the first two phases of the digital revolution being ushered in by government mandated policy of digitising the cable networks. The Digital Addressable System (DAS) was introduced by the government on 1 November, 2012 in phases and offers a unique opportunity to IMCL to make all its subscribers addressable and monetise its subscription revenues manifold. HVL says that IMCL has planned new services for the digital cable foray, apart from the broadband services like HD services, hybrid STBs for cable and internet value added services for digital cable.

     

    HVL says that its real estate projects are taking off in Bangalore. Its subsidiary M/s IDL Specialty Chemicals has land in Hyderabad.

    BENGALURU: The blue-eyed entity of the Indian media and entertainment industry, Balaji Telefilms Limited (BTL) reported consolidated revenue of Rs 84.03 crore for Q1-2014, more than double (up by 131 per cent) the revenue of Rs 36.37 crore in Q1-2013. BTL’s Q1-2014 consolidated revenue was also more than double (up by 117 per cent) the revenue of Rs 38.71 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Let us take a look at BTL’s other figures for Q1-2014

     

    Despite a negative EBIDTA of Rs 5.02 crore, BTL’s other income of Rs 12.86 crore resulted in a PAT of Rs 3.62 crore for Q1-2014, almost triple (up by 179 per cent) the PAT of Rs 1.39 crore for Q1-2013, and more than sixfold the Rs 0.5143 crore PAT in Q4-2013. BTL’s EBIDTA for Q1-2013 was Rs 0.1861 crore for Q1-2013 and a negative EBIDTA of Rs (-4.5) crore for Q4-2013.

     

    The company attributes the EBDITA loss in Q1-2014 of Rs 5.02 crore to discontinuance of television serials and deferment of non-theatrical revenues.

     

    BTL’s expenditure towards marketing and distribution of television serials and movies for Q1-2014 of Rs 80.22 crore was up by 163 per cent (more than double) the Rs 38.56 crore during Q1-2013 and was 134.4 per cent (again more than double) more than the Rs 34.22 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    BTL’s overhead expenditure for Q1-2014 at Rs 9.25 crore was 17 per cent more than the Rs 7.91 crore for Q1-2013, but 18.22 per cent lower than the Rs 11.31 crore in Q4-2014.

    Including other operating income, Television reported Rs 22.40 as total operating income for Q-2014, Rs 18.34 crore was spent towards production, acquisition marketing and distribution, staff cost, depreciation, and other expenses were Rs 7.12 crore, resulting in a loss from operations of Rs (-3.06) crore. Other Income of Rs 12.86 crore in Q1-2014 resulted in a PAT of Rs 7.43 crore.

     

    The company says that it had lower revenues from Television on account of discontinuance of two shows and it expects commissioned revenues to drive both volume and realisation.

     

    BMPL reported total operating income of Rs 61.67 crore for Q1-2014. Expenditure towards production, acquisition marketing and distribution was Rs 61.58 crore, staff cost, depreciation and other expenses were Rs 3.65 crore, resulting in a loss of Rs 3.57 crore for BMPL.

     

    The company says that actual BMPL EBDITA would be Rs 3.52 crore if marketing and distribution expense of Rs 7.02 crore for two upcoming movies Lootera and Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara is excluded.

     

    Bolt reported revenue of Rs 0.8289 crore for Q1-2014. Expenditure towards production, acquisition marketing and distribution was Rs 0.6691 crore and staff cost, depreciation and other expenses were Rs 0.3787 crore, resulting in a loss of Rs 0.219 crore from Bolt.

    Mukta Arts PAT at 1.04 per cent of income from ops for Q1-2014

    BENGALURU: Mukta Arts Limited (MAL) announced a PAT of Rs 0.74 crore and total income from operations of Rs 71.45 crore for Q1-2014, which translates roughly to 1.04 per cent for Q1-2014. A major chunk (63.1 per cent) of this PAT – Rs 0.47 crore for Q1-2014, came from discontinuing operations (see Notes (3) below).

     

    PAT percentage for Q1-2013 was slightly higher at 1.21 per cent of total revenue, but numerically lower than Q1-2014 – PAT for Q1-2013 was Rs 0.59 crore, total income from operations was Rs 48.98 crore. Discontinuing operations added Rs 0.39 crore or 65.25 per cent of total PAT for Q1-2013.

     

    MAL incurred loss of Rs 2.49 crore in Q4-2013. Loss from discontinuing operations added Rs 0.38 crore or 15.15 per cent to the loss for Q4-2013.

     

    For FY-2013, MAL had total income from operations of Rs 257.82 crore and a PAT of Rs 2.90 crore, hence PAT was 1.13 per cent of total income from operations. Discontinuing operations added Rs 1.12 crore or 38.6 per cent to total PAT for FY-2013.

     

    Let us take a look at MAL’s other figures for Q1-2014

     

    Total income from operations for Q1-2014 at Rs 71.45 crore increased by 45.9 per cent as compared to the Rs 48.98 crore for Q1-2013 and 21.3 per cent as compared to the Rs 58.92 crore for Q4-2013. As mentioned above, MAL’s total income from operations for FY-2013 was Rs 257.82 crore.

     

    Total Expenditure for Q1-2014 at Rs 70.34 crore rose 42.2 per cent as compared to the Rs 49.39 crore for Q1-2013 and was 13.6 per cent more than the Rs 61.91 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    A major chunk of MAL’s expenditure is the Distributors and Producers share (DAPS). For Q1-2014, DAPS at Rs 64.94 crore (90.9 per cent of Total Income from operations) was 40.2 per cent more than the Rs 46.32 crore (94.6 per cent of Total Income from operations) for Q1-2013 and 20.9 per cent higher than the Rs 53.73 crore (91.2 per cent of Total Income from operations). For FY-2013, MAL had reported a DAPS of Rs 233.74 crore or 90.7 per cent of Total Income from operations.

     

    Segment Results

     

    Four segments – Software division; Equipment division; Theatrical Exhibition division; and Others are responsible for revenue for MAL.

     

    Revenue from MAL’s Software division contributes more than 90 per cent to its revenues. For Q1-2014, the Software division had revenue of Rs 65.92 crore (97.3 per cent of Total Income from operations), which was 34.9 per cent higher than the Rs 48.86 crore (96.5 per cent of Total Income from operations) for Q1-2013 and 20.9 per cent higher than the Rs 54.54 crore (92.6 per cent of Total Income from operations) for Q4-2013. For FY-2013, revenue from Software division at Rs 246.47 crore was 95.6 per cent of Total Income from operations.

     

    Revenues from MAL’s Equipment division and Theatrical Exhibition division were a small fraction at Rs 0.31 crore and Rs 3.68 crore respectively of overall revenues for Q1-2014 and have not been major contributors to MAL’s PAT for the quarter. Equipment division incurred a loss of Rs 0.06 crore in Q1-2014, while Theatrical division added Rs 0.08 crore to MAL’s profit before tax and finance costs.

     

    Revenue from ‘Other’ in Q1-2014 rose marginally (by 5.14 per cent) to Rs 1.71 crore from Rs 1.63 crore in Q1-2013 and was just 0.87 per cent higher than the Rs 1.70 crore for Q4-2013. This segment however added Rs 1.41 crore as compared to the Rs 0.69 crore from the Software division’s and formed a major chunk (66.25 per cent) of MAL’s profit before tax and finance costs for Q1-2014 at Rs 2.12 crore.

     

    NOTES: (1) In the matter of two PIL’s filed in the Bombay High Court, the Bombay High Court quashed the J.V. Agreement between Mukta Arts Limited (MAL) and Maharashtra Film Stage & Cultural Development Corporation Limited (MFSCDCL) and ordered Whistling Woods International (WWI) to return the 14.5 acre vacant land immediately and balance 5.5 acre land with structure by July 2014. Court also asked WWI to pay rent along with interest but allowed the same to be set off against market price of the building to be paid by Government as per valuation to be done. After Supreme Court of India dismissed the SLP filed by MAL against the impugned order, MAL & WWI have filed review petitions in Bombay High Court, which have not yet come up for hearing. MFSCDCL had demanded Rs 83.21 crore vide letter dated 3 December 2012, which has not been accounted for in view of the pending review petition referred to above. During the year 2012-13, the PWD Engineer has given his valuation report based on the Balance Sheet of WWI as at 31 March 2011. The said valuation report specifically mentions that market price is not considered.

     

    Further, MAL has made an application to the Government of Maharashtra in February 2013 to appoint expert valuers to determine the market price which in its view is the price to be determined by reading the directions in their proper perspective. Pending final disposal of the review petition and resolution of the above, and in view of the future plans for WWI which are being evaluated, management believes that the Company’s investments in WWI and amounts due therefrom are good and recoverable as management is hopeful of reliefs based on the issues involved and on merits of the case, as also of a high valuation of the building. The auditors continue to modify their report on the said matter.

     

    (2) Remuneration paid to the managing director of the Company for the year ended 31 March 2013 and for earlier financial years from 2005-06 to 2011-2012 is in excess of the limits prescribed under Schedule XIII to the Companies Act, 1956. The Company made applications to the Central Government seeking post-facto approval for earlier years, which is awaited; application for the year 2012-13 is proposed to be made. During the year 2011-12, the company had received approval for part of the excess remuneration paid. The company had made applications to the authorities requesting reconsideration/ approval for the balance excess remuneration. Pending final communication from the authorities in this regard and application for the year 2012-13, no adjustment has been made in these financial results. The auditors continue to modify their report on the said matter.

     

    (3) During the quarter ended 31 March 2013, the Board of Directors approved the formation, with another venturer, of a company as a subsidiary of Mukta Arts Limited to conduct the business of exhibition and programming currently being carried on by Mukta Arts Limited. The results of the said business have been disclosed as Discontinuing operations. Previous quarter’s/period’s figures have also been recast for comparative purposes.

     

    (4) Figures for the previous quarter/ period have been regrouped/ rearranged to conform to current quarter’s/ period’s presentation.

    BENGALURU: Indian broadcaster TV Today Network Limited (TV Today) reported a PAT of Rs 11.98 crore for Q1-2013, almost double (88.5 per cent higher) than the Rs 6.36 crore profit for Q4-2013. The company had reported a loss of Rs 0.35 crore for Q1-2013.

     

    Its FM Radio Broadcasting segment (radio) showed improved performance in Q1-2014 as compared to Q1-2013 and Q4-2013. Loss from the radio segment of Rs 2.33 crore was about half (51.2 per cent) of Rs 4.54 crore in Q1-2013 and 15 per cent lower than the loss of Rs 2.74 crore in Q4-2013. Revenue from radio in Q1-2014 at Rs 3.02 crore was higher by 36.6 per cent as compared to the Rs 2.21 crore in Q1-2013 and 14.1 per cent higher than the Rs 2.64 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    Let us take a look at TV Today’s other results for Q1-2014

     

    TV Today’s net income from operations for Q1-2014 at Rs 88.90 crore increased 25.8 per cent as compared to the Rs 70.64 crore for Q1-2013 and was 5.5 per cent higher than the Rs 84.27 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    Its profit from operations before other income, finance costs and exceptional items in Q1-2014 at Rs 17.62 crore almost trebled (was 276 per cent up) as compared to the profit of Rs 6.38 crore for Q4-2013. The company had reported a loss from operations before other income, finance costs and exceptional items of Rs 0.49 crore for Q1-2013.

     

    Exceptional items included the Rs 1.57 crore the company had paid in Q1-2013 to Prasar Bharti and BSNL under protest towards telecast fee and interest thereon (Rs 0.8001 crore) and monitoring charges for foreign satellite (Rs 0.7691 crore) respectively in respect of earlier years

     

    TV Today’s overall expense for Q1-2014 was almost flat at Rs 71.27 crore as compared to the Rs 71.13 crore for Q1-2013 and 8.5 per cent lower than the Rs 77.89 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    The network spent Rs 9.03 crore in Q1-2014 towards production cost, 13 per cent lower than the Rs 10.38 crore for Q4-2013, but 3.8 per cent more than the Rs 8.71 crore for Q1-2013.

     

    TV Today’s advertisement, distribution and sales expense at Rs 19.7 crore for Q1-2014 was lower by 9.7 per cent as compared to the Rs 21.81 crore in Q1-2013 and 14.1 per cent lower than the Rs 22.93 crore in Q4-2013.

     

    TV Today’s Television broadcasting revenue for Q1-2014 at Rs 85.89 crore was higher by 25.5 per cent as compared to the Rs 68.44 crore for Q1-2013 and 5.2 per cent more than the Rs 81.63 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    It’s Television Broadcasting business had a PBIT (Profit before interest and tax) of Rs 21.18 crore for Q1-2014 was almost five times (4.98 times) the Rs4.25 crore for Q1-2013 and was 81.1 per cent higher as compared to the Rs 11.69 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    TV Today has made a strategic investment of Rs 45.52 crore in Mail Today Newspapers Pvt. Ltd. (Mail Today) for entering into print media. Though Mail Today is in the initail stages of operation and is presently incurring losses, the company is confident of its profitability and consequently of the carrying value of the investment.

    Zee Learn reports PAT for Q1-2014 after 8 consecutive quarterly losses

    BENGALURU: The last time that Zee Learn Limited (Zee Learn) reported a profit was for the Q3-2011, the second quarter since it commenced operations. The education player then reported loss for eight quarters and two financial years until Q1-2014 when it showed a PAT of Rs 3.25 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 3.36 crore in Q1-2013 and a loss of Rs 7.35 crore in Q4-2013. For FY 2013, Zee Learn reported a loss of Rs 21.22 crore. Zee Learn saw an improvement in operational EBITDA by Rs 5.69 crore in corresponding Q-o-Q.

    Let us look at the other financials of Zee Learn for Q1-2014

    Zee Learn reported Rs 33.52 crore as total income from operation for Q1-2014 as compared to Rs 23.34 crore in Q1-2013, registering a growth of 43.6 per cent. However, operating income was lower by eight per cent as compared to Rs 36.43 crore in Q4-2013.

    Zee Learn also had ‘Other Income’ of Rs 2.22 crore in Q1-2014, in Q1-2013, this was 0.3931 crore, while ‘Other Income’ was Rs (-0.5607) crore for Q4-2013. Other income includes Rs 1.8561 crore exchange gain on remittance of GDR issue proceeds.

    Total expense for Q1-2014 at Rs 30.95 crore was higher by 19 per cent as compared to Rs 26.01 crore for Q1-2013, but lower by 23.3 per cent than the Rs 40.37 crore in Q4-2013.

    Expense towards purchase of education goods and television content in Q1-2014 at Rs 12.28 crore was more than double (more by 117.8 per cent) as compared to the Rs 5.37 crore for Q1-2013 and 15.3 per cent lower than the Rs 15.08 crore in Q4-2013.

    Other expense for Q1-2014 at Rs 9.51 crore was lower by 8.4 per cent as compared to the Rs 10.38 crore in Q1-2013 and was 28.6 per cent lower than the Rs 13.32 crore in Q4-2013. Other expenses includes marketing, advertisement and publicity expenses of Rs 3.6028 crore and Rs 3.9683 crore for the quarter ended 30 June, 2013 and 30 June, 2012 respectively.

    Zee Learn CEO Navneet Anhal said, “The improved financial performance is a result of all brands in the Zee Learn bouquet performing well due to improved efficiencies. Our investments in each of the brands are continuing to payoff. This year Kidzee has registered almost 25 per cent growth in the number of operational centers (192 new centers added) significantly expanding our footprint in the country.”

    “Also, we have witnessed growth of 37 per cent in enrolments in our MLZS schools wherein average enrolments has moved up to 292 students in Q1 FY14 vis-?-vis 213 students in Q1FY13 largely on account of better academic content and its delivery model. The Company also sees good momentum in MLZS and Kidzee, overwhelming positive response in ZeeQ, India’s First Edutainment Channel for kids wherein Zee Learn provides content to the channel and huge potential in its newly revamped BrainCafe School Solutions.

    Zee Learn launched its first Global Depository Receipts (GDR) for value of $9.99 million which were subscribed by overseas investors on 21 May, 2013. The GDR issue was fully subscribed and the company allotted 56,17,977 GDRs at a price of $3.56 per GDR. Each GDR represents 10 (ten) underlying equity shares in the company and the GDRs are listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.
