    TV broadcast veteran & Zee Media’s CRO Abhay Ojha passes away

    Mumbai: TV broadcast veteran Abhay Ojha has passed away on Saturday due to a cardiac arrest. He was associated with Zee Media as chief revenue officer (CRO).

    Ojha is survived by his wife and two children.

    Ojha joined Zee Media in March, after a successful stint at News Nation Network as vice president sales & marketing.

    In his career spanning over 22 years in the media sector, Ojha worked with the leading broadcast conglomerates.

    An alumnus of Delhi University, Ojha began his career with TV Today, and has subsequently worked with other organisations such as Network18, Reliance Broadcast Network, TV9 and News Nation.

    Writer & journalist Anil Dharker passes away

    NEW DELHI: Renowned journalist and writer Anil Dharker has passed away. According to media reports, the 74-year old was a cardiac patient and underwent a bypass procedure at a Mumbai hospital on Thursday.

    Known for his vibrant and diverse five-decade-long career, Dharker, apart from his contribution to the world of media and literature, was the founder and director of the Mumbai International Literary Festival. From being the editor of reputed publications like Mid-day and The Independent, he has authored books such as The Romance Of Salt, about Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March. His columns have appeared in a variety of publications both in India and abroad.

     

    The noted journalist was a member of the Advisory Boards of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Doordarshan, the Children's Film Society of India and a member of the advisory committee of the film censor board. He was also responsible for opening the Akashwani Auditorium in south Bombay as an art movie theatre.

    Following the news of Dharker's demise, many renowned figures have taken to social media platforms to express their grief and condolences.

    Congress leader, writer and former international diplomat Shashi Tharoor tweeted: “Shocked and saddened by the news of Anil Dharker’s passing. The literary world will not be the same without him. His flair, wit and intelligence, his wide-ranging and eclectic tastes (always married to a respect for good writing) and his talent and energy for organisation make him irreplaceable.”

    Veteran journalist and talk show host Vir Sanghvi wrote: "Devastated to hear about Anil Dharker. He epitomised the caring and socially concerned Mumbai intellectual. He elevated every job he did from promoting art cinema to editing mags to running Lit Live. In 1984 he gave me my first column. A great loss to India and to me personally.”

    Poet, lyricist and chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Prasoon Joshi tweeted: “Saddened to hear about Anil Dharker passing away. Will miss and cherish the discussions we had about life. A stimulating mind, nurturer of literature and art who thrived on ideas.”

    NDTV’s KVL Narayan Rao passes away

    MUMBAI: NDTV group CEO and executive vice chairperson KVL Narayan Rao passed away at 8am today. Suffering from cancer, he was 63 years old.

    His funeral is scheduled at 9.30 pm at Lodhi auditorium

    In October 2016, Narayan Rao was reappointed for a second tenure as NDTV’s group CEO replacing Vikram Chandra, in addition to his responsibilities as executive vice chairperson. 

    Narayan Rao started his career as a journalist with the Indian Express before joining the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), wherein he held several important appointments during his tenure from 1979-1994.

    Narayan Rao had joined NDTV in January 1995 looking after human resources, administration and operations of IRS.

    He was invited to join the board of NDTV in 1998 and had been its executive director since then. He was appointed group CEO in 2007 and executive vice chairperson in August 2011. A former president of the News Broadcasters Association (NBA), Rao was also on the board of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF). He has been VP of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA). He also served as a member of the FICCI Entertainment Committee as well as a member of the CII National Committee on Media and Entertainment.

    Sab TV co-founder Gautam Adhikari passes away

    MUMBAI: Gautam Adhikari, the chairman and whole time director of the SAB group, died at the age of 67 in the wee hours of Friday (October 27) at his residence. His last rites were performed in Vile Parle suburban area of Mumbai.

    He was a diploma holder in commercial art and was considered as one of the pioneers of the Marathi TV industry. He is survived by wife Ranjana and two children – a son and a daughter.

    Gautam and his brother Markand started a company– Sri Adhikari Brothers (SAB) Group- in 1985 as a small family owned partnership firm.

    The company initially produced serials in Marathi, but soon ventured into film distribution and production business. He had set a record for the highest number of hit TV shows and his record was also mentioned in the Limca Book of World Records.

    They introduced standup comedy on small screen with the show Made in India, which was aired on DD1 in 1998.

    The production house also offered thriller and music based programmes on TV. The most popular TV shows directed by him are Commandar, Marshall, Silsila and Hello Inspector.

    Hero Cycles chairman emeritus OP Munjal passes away

    MUMBAI: Hero Cycles chairman emeritus and one of the founders of Hero Group OP Munjal passed away earlier today (13 August) in Ludhiana.

     

    The 86-year-old industry legend was facing health related issues for the past few months. He is survived by one son, four daughters, a daughter-in-law, four son-in-laws and 10 grandchildren. The cremation will take place on 14 August in Ludhiana.

     

    Munjal had only last month ceded chairmanship of Hero Motors group and retired from active role in the business. His son Pankaj Munjal succeeded him as the chairman and managing director of the Group.

     

    He along with his three brothers Brijmohan Lall Munjal, Dayanand Munjal and Satyanand Munjal started a bicycle spare parts business in Amritsar In 1944. They subsequently moved their base to Ludhiana naming the company ‘Hero’ and set up India’s first bicycle manufacturing unit in 1956. During 1980s Hero Cycles became the largest bicycle manufacturer by volume in the world. Munjal, who led Hero Cycles for almost 60 years, also helped Hero Cycles in diversifying to other businesses such as auto parts manufacturing and hospitality. Under his leadership, the company grew from its humble beginnings to a fledging Rs 3000 crore industrial house. He also served as the president of All India Cycle Manufacturers’ Association.

     

    Munjal had received national honours from former Presidents of India including Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, VV Giri, Giani Zail Singh and Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He had also received the Udyog Rattan Award for outstanding contribution towards economic development of the State (Punjab).

     

    He was not only a renowned businessman but also a known philanthropist. He supported several educational institutions and hospitals across India.

    Indian television’s ‘Baa’ Sudha Shivpuri passes away

    MUMBAI: Veteran actress Sudha Shivpuri, who essayed the role of Baa in Ekta Kapoor’s iconic serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhie Bahu Thi, passed away on the morning of 20 May. She was 77.

     

    Her funeral was held at the Oshiwara Crematorium today at 2.30 pm. She was married to actor Om Shivpuri and is survived by daughter Ritu and son Vineet.

     

    Shivpuri had been unwell for the last couple of years after she suffered a stroke in December 2013, which affected her basic motor skills.

     

    Prior to acting in television, Shivpuri also had a stint in films. Her debut film was Basu Chatterjee’s Swami (1977). Apart from this, she also worked in movies like Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Hamari Bahu Alka, Sawan Ko Aane Do, Sun Meri Laila, Burning Train, Vidhaata and Maya Memsaab.

     

    In her TV career, Shivpuri acted in serials like Aa Bail Mujhe Maar, Rajni, Missing, Rishtey, Sarhadein and Bandhan amongst others. However, it was Kapoor’s Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhie Bahu Thi, which ran on Star Plus from 2000 – 2008, which catapulted her to instant fame.

    Iconic film maker Yash Chopra passes away

    MUMBAI: On 21 October, one of the most respected and iconic film makers from Bollywood, Yash Chopra, breathed his last, leaving behind a legacy of some of the best made films in Indian cinema. Chopra was being treated for dengue at Lilavati Hospital where he was admitted on 13 October after complaining of weakness and difficulty in breathing.

    According to media reports, Chopra was not responding to treatment well and given his age, battling a disease like dengue was always an uphill task. He celebrated his 80th birthday on 27 September when he announced that the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan romantic drama Jab Tak Hai Jaan will be his last movie as a director. Chopra is survived by wife Pamela Chopra and sons Aditya and Uday Chopra.

    The illustrious film maker was born in pre-independence Lahore in 1932 and is the younger brother to noted film maker B R Chopra. He came to Mumbai with Rs 200 on him and began his career by assisting I S Johar. He debuted as a director with Dhool ke Phool, a social drama starring Mala Sinha and Rajendra Kumar and dealt with the trials of a single unwed mother. He went on to make 22 films as a director across genres like social dramas, romance, action and suspense thrillers.

    Waqt, Silsila, Kabhi Kabhi, Daag, Deewar, Trishul, Chandni, Lamhe, Darr and Veer Zaara are among his most remembered and successful directorial ventures. Chopra has also been credited for moulding the screen images of Amitabh Bachchan as the ‘angry young man‘ (with Deewar) and Shah Rukh Khan as the quintessential romantic leading man (Dil Toh Paagal Hai and Veer Zaara).

    Chopra is the force behind one of the biggest production houses in the country – Yash Raj Films (YRF) which he started in 1971. Till then his movies were produced by elder brother B R Chopra and movie mogul of that time Gulshan Rai. Rajesh Khanna starrer Daag was the first movie produced under the banner. YRF is perhaps the most successful privately held studio in the country and has also been instrumental in changing the overseas distribution business in India.

    The production house has produced some of the highest grossing movies of their times like Chak De India! (Rs 1.04 billion worldwide in 2007), Ek Tha Tiger (Rs 3.07 billion in 2012), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (Rs 1.58 billion worldwide in 2008) and Dhoom and its sequel Dhoom 2 (in 2004 and 2006 respectively; combined worldwide collection of Rs 2.23 billion).

    Dinesh Thakur passes away

    Mumbai: Veteran theatre actor-director Dinesh Thakur, known for his character roles in Hindi films, has passed away after a prolonged illness. The actor-director was suffering from kidney ailments. His end came at a suburban Andheri hospital.

    Thakur acted in several acclaimed films like Mere Apne, Rajanigandha and Ghar. He appeared as one of the leads in the Basu Chatterjee directed film by Rajnigandha, which won both the Filmfare Best Movie Award and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film.

    Thakur, who mostly appeared in character roles in Hindi films, was also a screenwriter and story writer. He is known for writing the story and screenplay of the 1978-made film Ghar that won him the 1979 Filmfare‘s best story award.

    Thakur headed a theatre group called ANK Productions for the last three decades. His oldest and still popular theatre production has been Jis Lahore Nahi Dekhya.

    He was a noted Indian theatre director, actor in theatre, television and Hindi films.

    He was 65 and is survived by actor-wife Prita Mathur.

    Thakur‘s last rites will be conducted on Thursday at the Oshiwara crematorium around 4.30 pm.

    Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine passes away

    MUMBAI: Oscar-winning film star Ernest Borgnine died Sunday of kidney failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
    The 95-year old Borgnine was an unconventional lead in many films of the 1950s, winning an Oscar in 1955 for Marty.
    On television, he played Quinton McHale in the 1962-1966 series McHale‘s Navy and co-starred in the mid-1980s action series Airwolf, in addition to a wide variety of other roles.
    He was also known for his role as Mermaid Man in the animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. Borgnine earned an Emmy Award nomination at age 92 for his work on the series ER.
    The former member of US Navy is reportedly survived by his fifth wife Tova Traesnaes, and his children Christofer, Nancee and Sharon Borgnine, a stepson David Johnson, six grandchildren, and his sister Evelyn Verlardi.
