The conversation revolved around the current cyber threats and how to combat them, with special emphasis on Amazon miniTVs efforts and role in raising awareness among conman in an engaging and creative way.

Parmeet candidly revealed his communication with ethical hackers to get more insight about the hacking world. “Amit has an outfit where he has these ethical hackers. So I happen to interact with them, obviously Amit was there throughout, holding my hand and telling us exactly how things are, is it possible to hack it in this way or not possible. We asked him all those basic questions and he answered them and of course my writers, they did their research. I am sure they approached a lot of people, hackers, and there are some people whom I know in the hacking world who are basically in the US. I called them up, I spoke to them and they are also white hats, they help Indian government, the American government, so they were also very helpful in giving me insight into how hacking actually happens and how we actually counter it,” he shared.

Delving deeper into the dark deep rooted cybercrimes, Hack Crimes Online sheds light on the vast reach of the internet and how we are mere puppets in the hacking world. Hack Crimes Online is currently streaming exclusively on Amazon miniTV available on Amazon’s shopping app, on Fire TV, and on Play Store.

  • ‘Tumse Na Ho Payega’ to premiere on 29 Sep on Disney+ Hotstar

‘Tumse Na Ho Payega’ to premiere on 29 Sep on Disney+ Hotstar

Mumbai: We all have had that one judgemental person in our lives who has constantly doubted our efforts and made us wonder – ke log kya kahenge? “Tumse Na Ho Payega”, Disney+ Hotstar’s upcoming film is a fun light-hearted take on the modern-day challenges faced by today’s youth, and their dilemma in standing up to these ‘rules’ laid by the society we live in, to instead follow their own path and dreams will release on 29 September exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar.

“Tumse Na Ho Payega” is a fresh and satirical approach to convey to the youth of India – “Find the courage to follow your heart and define your own success” and bringing this story to life is the talented ensemble cast of Ishwak Singh, Mahima Makwana, Gaurav Pandey, Amala Akkineni, Gurpreet Saini, Parmeet Sethi and Meghna Malik.

Producer and writer Nitesh Tiwari, said, “Tumse Na Ho Payega was written with the intention to bring the story of every youngster in a middle-class household to screen. Whether it is the grind of a corporate job or chasing your childhood love or your lifelong dream of starting something of your own, “Tumse Na Ho Payega” is that relatable story! We are all so excited to share this journey with viewers across the world on Disney+ Hotstar and hope it inspires and entertains our audience at the same time.”

“In a society where we are made to believe that the lines on the palm of your hand dictate your future, “Tumse Na Ho Payega” is a sincere attempt to convey that only you can define your success. Sometimes that could mean defying the rules set by society, ignoring those who don’t believe in you and listening to that inner voice that says, “Go for it!”, to chase that dream with all you’ve got. It’s what fueled our own pursuit in telling this story albeit with a little humour. We can’t wait for you to experience this film which at some point will relate with your own personal growth journey.” said director Abhishek Sinha.

Standing up to society’s ‘log kya kahenge’ attitude are a group of young friends in the movie led by two talented actors Ishwak Singh and Gaurav Pandey.

“Tumse Na Ho Payega is a story that I relate to a lot, I feel like it’s my story and I’m sure whoever watches it would feel the same. It’s a light-hearted fun film with dollops of humor and a very strong theme that remains at the heart of it all: to follow one’s dreams and not succumb to societal pressure. I think there comes a time in our lives where we feel that what we’re doing is not our true calling, but we ended up doing it because someone else decided what’s best for us. But then there’s a moment when you tell yourself that I need to get out of this rut and do what I believe in and more importantly what makes you happy. It’s the most difficult thing to come out and say I want to quit my job and pursue my passion. With nobody by your side, you’re wondering where to go and what to do. That’s the long road that my character Gaurav takes and in that journey which is nothing short of a wacky roller coaster ride, finds himself, his true calling and all that matters to him,” said actor Ishwak Singh.

Actor Gaurav Pandey said, “One of the reasons I fell in love with the story is its relatability factor. It’s a fresh and fun take on how to have faith in yourself and stand up to anyone who says “Tumse Na Ho Payega”. Also, it’s a story about igniting passion and connecting with what you believe in. To put in the effort and never be demotivated with the challenges you face in life.”

Get ready to feel a rollercoaster of emotions as Gaurav breaks free from the pressures of society and inspires you too, with “Tumse Na Ho Payega” streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, 29 September onwards!

  • Disney+Hotstar’s ‘Hundred’: Flawed in parts, but worth a watch

Disney+Hotstar’s ‘Hundred’: Flawed in parts, but worth a watch

MUMBAI: The title of the series is 'Hundred. You really don’t know what to expect from it with its poster showing a lady cop, a cheaply gaudily dressed woman and a young man in the centre, looking like a small-town dude.

But as you dive into the Disney+Hotstar special, you get to know it is about two women and their individual journeys, their battles in their lives to be considered, to be dealt with as real people.

One is a cop, Saumya Shukla (played very effectively by Lara Dutta), and the other is a young government census employee Netra Patil (enacted immaculately by Sairat star Rinky Rajguru). Both are stuck and stalled in their respective lives. The former by her male chauvinist commissioner boss Anshuman (Parmeet Sethi) and her ACP husband Pravin (played by Sudhanshu Pandey), both of whom, believe the place of a wife is in the home producing babies and make no bones about expressing their feelings. The latter, by a visit to the doctor, comes to know that she has tumours in the brain which have spread and she has only 100 days to live.

Netra lives in a chawl and has a down-on-his-luck, lazy father, an ungrateful grandfather and a brother who are dependent on her as their provider. And she has a male friend (her boyfriend), another loser, who is constantly dreaming up some lame-duck-quick-buck scheme. But yet she is bubbly and buoyant prior to finding out about her ailment; she dreams of traveling to Switzerland and is movie-mad, imagines her dream lover to be Shah Rukh Khan as he is in romantic films.

And on that note, the two rather naïve women, Saumya and Netra, bump into each other accidentally. Then begins their journey where both work as foils to each other. Saumya is career-focused and determined to be in the thick of the action, solving crime cases, rather than being sent on school assignments. She convinces Netra to live up the remaining days of her life; trying to fulfil all her dreams.  As part of this living it up, the latter hits the bottle as though she was made for it.

The show brings out very strongly the chauvinism that possibly runs in the police force (how many Kiran Bedi has India created). The politicking that goes on in the police old-boys club, amongst those who we look up to as protectors. They have a single-minded focus: how to pull Saumya down as she successfully solves case after case, despite their opposition. Though she is given harmless assignments like managing security for visiting corrupt foreign dignitaries or attending functions where women cops are felicitated, her boss views her as police eye candy. In her mind’s eye she is that super cop, who is sharp, can solve crimes, is well connected with her network of informers – basically she is a good cop who is not getting her due.

Running over eight episodes, Hundred keeps you engaged as it is pacey – and it gets even pacier in the last four-five episodes – though the script and characters have flaws.

For instance: Saumya is bold enough to hold a press conference to announce how she cracked a case to the consternation of her boss, but has not guts to complain against his misogynist tendencies. Also, the writers seem to skim over some parts. For instance, in one scene Netra is shown to have been cut open by organ thieves; is rescued by Saumya, and is back on her feet in what appears like no time. Surgery takes time to recover from, does it not? What’s going on?  And when she is flouting orders, she has hordes of personnel ready to serve her at her every beck and command; I don't know if it would be possible in the real world. There are several other clichés: while Saumya is shown to be this super cop, almost everyone else in the police force – even senior policemen – is relative bumbling fools. Then there are some useless scenes which tend to drag the story: like when Maddy (played by Karan Wahi) – a struggling Haryanvi musician and Saumya’s adulterous love interest – wants to have a music video of his single shot, with the help of Netra who agrees to fund it only if she is in it. It does not take the story forward.

If you ignore this use of creative licence and some of the writing and directorial lapses, both Rinky and Lara have put up strong performances. Though the former could have brought in better histrionics to her drunken act, whenever she has a pint too many. Lara clearly shines in those scenes where she is on the move and brings emotional energy on the screen when she is standing up for herself.

Others who have meaty roles include Karan Wahi (as a Haryanvi struggling musicians and Saumya’s adulterous love interest), and Makarand Deshpande (as the older money launderer and the partner of Netra’s love interest Rajeev Siddhartha).

Would we advise you to watch. Yes.

  • ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2:’ Fun all the way

‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2:’ Fun all the way

Ideas are at premium and a safe way is to cash in on brand equity. Pyaar Ka Punchnama was a reasonable earner in 2011. What better than to en-cash the equity and hence Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 follows the prequel almost to the T.

The story, as such, follows the same lines. Three friends suckered by three girls. They are desperate for dates, company, sex and love; love comes last though they are foolish enough to think they are in love when they do find their respective girlfriends.

Kartik Aryan, Sunny Singh and Omkar Kapoor are roomies. They share a flat in Delhi, eat together, drink together and dream of girls together. All three are stag. They are thicker than brothers in that they can take each other for granted, whoever earns more picks up all the tabs and there is no accounting or sharing of cash spent; all they share is bonhomie.

Soon enough, their desire for girlfriends comes true. All three find one each. All three girls represent different mind-sets. Kartik is with Nushrat Bharucha (both being the only common factor from the earlierPKP), Omkar gets Ishita Raj while Sunny ends up with Sonalli Sehgal.

The three men, deprived of romance and sex, go all out to woo their girls and, thanks to their blind love and desperateness, they trust the girls immensely while the girls use their weakness to exploit them. Not all three get in return what they had dreamt of.

Kartik is head over heels with Nushrat. She is game for everything, sex included, though she is too finicky, her every question, which is answered by him leads to a counter question from her. Also, she is still in love with her ex-boyfriend from Chandigarh with whom she sleeps around even while professing her true and total love for Kartik.

Sunny and Priyanka are dating. He hopes to marry her but ends up becoming an errand boy for her father and mother, Sharat Saxena and Mona Ambegaonkar. She is the chaste kind who won’t sleep before marriage. She does not, however, have the guts to tell her father she loves Sunny. Priyanka’s father is looking for a groom for her and Sunny even ends up escorting her to her meetings with her grooms to be.

Omkar’s girlfriend, Ishita is game for everything Omkar would desire in a woman. She pretends to be dignified always ready to pay her own share of an outing. Soon, having established herself as a self-sufficient and self-respecting girl, she gradually starts milking Omkar even talking him into giving her an add-on credit card and open a joint bank account where he deposits 20 per cent of his Rs 3 lakh salary against 20 per cent of her Rs 20,000 salary.

The rest of the film follows the earlier version as the boys realise what they have got into. Establish the guilt of each of their partner and want out.

The film has nothing new for those who have seen its earlier version since it adheres mainly to the same sequence of events. Yet, what works is some witty lines and its raw youth appeal. The young ones who would want to get in to and out of affairs; sex being the aim. The film has some fun moments and some dull ones. However, you don’t come out cursing it. Direction is in keeping with the theme. Music is soothing as it comes mostly in small doses. What helps it is the visuals since it has been shot at Pattaya while taking liberty to shift to UAE for a song or two.

While the acting is generally competent, the three boys do better. Sunny tops the list with equal contribution from Kartik and Omkar. Kartik has his minutes of glory when he delivers a long monologue on girls. Ishita as a scrounging girlfriend to Omkar is best among girls with Nushrat is close on her heels. Priyanka is fine too. Sharat is in his element while Mona has little to make an impact with.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 enjoys the brand equity. The film has opened to very good response despite Navratri and Ram Leela season and should turn out to be a minor hit.

    Producer: Abhishek Pathak

    Director: Luv Ranjan

Cast: Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha, Sunny Singh, Sonalli Sehgall, Ishita Raj, Omkar Kapoor

‘Wedding Pullav:’ Unappetising fare, served cold

Wedding Pullav is loosely based on the 1997 Hollywood movie, My Best Friend’s Wedding. This is also the launch pad for Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) alumni and Shashi and Anu Ranjan’s daughter Anushka Ranjan. When a girl is to be launched, romantic comedy would seem like a safe bet. Hence, ready to serve inspiration from Hollywood.

Diganth Manchale is getting engaged to Sonalli Sehgal with who he thinks he is in love for, after all, she is the one who convinced him to pursue a course in MBA, got him a job in her dad, Parmeet Sethi’s company where he designs motorbikes! One would think an IIT grad would be better suited for such a job! But, an MBA is the flavour of the season.

While there are minutes left for the mahurat for the engagement ceremony, Diganth is anxious because there is no way he can proceed unless his best friend since childhood, Anushka, does not arrive. Anushka and Diganth had a tiff four years ago after which she had left in a huff for London. So what makes her come to his engagement? No script is ever all perfect. The engagement is done with and when it comes to wedding time, the families concerned shift to Pattaya where the ceremony will take place.

Anushka makes a grand entry with a band in tow. She is tomboyish and her usual dress code is casuals, jeans mostly and that is what she wears at the engagement, too. For, if she dresses up as a glam girl, love happens. Which does when she ‘dresses to kill’ as she plans to go receive her boyfriend from London, Karan Grover.

Since Anushka and Diganth are best buddies, it is suggested that both the couples, Diganth and Sonalli as well as Anushka and Karan marry at the same venue back to back. And so, Karan arrives in Pattaya. The presence of another man in Anushka’s life sort of makes Diganth uncomfortable and, soon, he realises he loves Anushka and not Sonalli.

Even as Diganth gets drawn to Anushka more with every passing moment, he is committed to Sonalli and her father’s millions as well as his career. Also in attendance at the venue in Pattaya are his three friends, Anushka’s relatives Himani Shivpuri and grandma and, of course, his parents, Satish Kaushik and Upasana Singh. They all can see that Diganth actually loves Anushka but is marrying Sonalli.

So there are some melodramatic moments, which actually seem like hours to slow down the pace of the narration till Diganth realises and gathers enough courage to open his mind while just about everybody else knew who he loved including his bride to be, Sonalli and Anushka’s groom to be, Karan.

It is time to sum up things; the wedding rituals have started when Diganth decides to walk out of the ceremony and go searching for Anushka. Of course, Jai is very much there to complete the matchmaking. Love triumphs and hero and heroine get each other. QED.

Though inspired from a hit Hollywood film, the film lacks on reworking the script. The direction is just passable while the editing needed to be a bit crisper. For a love story, the music is lacking. Dialogue is not much either. Anushka is a sort of photoshop version of Juhi Chawla and few more though, eventually, fairly charming. Diganth needs getting used to and does not appeal when in mug shots. Karan has good screen presence. Sonalli is fair. Rishi Kapoor plays a cameo and makes his presence felt. Satish has nothing to back his comic yet is a wary father while Upasana is loud without a cause as she has always been. Himani is her usual self. Kitu Gidwani and Parmeet fill the bill.

Wedding Pullav is a film you can sit through but not carry home. Lacking face value, it faces a tough challenge of drawing the audience from show one. For after all, admission rates offer no discounts for a film sans face value.

    Producers: Shashi Ranjan, Anu Ranjan

    Director: Binod Pradhan

Cast: Anushka Ranjan, Diganth Manchale, Sonalli Sehgall, Karan Grover, Rishi Kapoor, Satish Kaushik, Himani Shivpuri, Parmeet Sethi, Upasana Singh, Kitu Gidwani

  • Dil Dhadakne Do: Alas, not the box office registers

Dil Dhadakne Do: Alas, not the box office registers

MUMBAI: Dil Dhadakne Do is a sort of Page 3 of a high end Delhi group of Punjabi families; just about every family having a bunch of not very glorious secrets. It is kind of Nukkad (a very popular, classic TV serial that captivated the Doordarshan audience between 1986-88). This serial brought together characters from a chawl settlement together at the street corner and told their stories.

Dil Dhadakne Do brings together a group of some upper-class Delhi Punjabi families together on a cruise ship; only here, even as this friendly group demonstrates bonhomie and love, each one is hiding a dagger behind the back. Bitching and backstabbing is the way of life here. Because, just about every participant in the jamboree represents a dysfunctional family.

Anil Kapoor is a self-made man rolling in millions. His favourite pastime is to tell and retell his success story.  His wife, Shefali Shah, like all such rich men’s wives, has little to do except deck up and meet with the wives of other such rich men. These women thrive in bitching about and badmouthing anyone of them who is not around. Anil has pinned all his hopes on his only son, Ranveer Singh, whom he expects to take over as the next boss of his company. He has married his daughter off to Rahul Bose, a Mumbai businessman.

The group has internal jealousies and enmities, all hidden behind a mask of smile. All the women know whose husband is having an affair with whom but are never willing to accept stories in their own backyard.

Imagine what can happen when a horde of such couples come together on a cruise for a fortnight with nowhere to escape.

Despite his ego and posturing, Anil is on the verge of bankruptcy. He can’t repay loans to banks, his products have become substandard. He urgently needs to infuse funds to save his enterprise and, more so, his face in the ‘society.’ However, this does not stop Anil from putting on a show. Though he or Shefali are never seen communicating without rancour, if at all, he decides to celebrate his wedding anniversary on a cruise ship, all expenses paid by him for all his friends.

Anil’s two friends, Parmeet Sethi and Manoj Pahwa, are sworn enemies and the initially discarded Parmeet needs to be added to the list of invitees, feels Shefali. For Parmeet is loaded. His only daughter, Ridhima Sud, has been humiliated when her prospective fiancé failed to attend their engagement ceremony. It was headline news in Delhi Times, it is said (a Times of India subsidiary, Junglee Pictures happens to be the partner in this film venture with Excel Entertainment). Hence, it is tough to find another suitor for her despite Parmeet’s riches. After all, marriage market is not OLX.

But, Anil has a plan. He counts on a barter with Parmeet: Ranveer as a dulha for Ridhima against 49% stake by Parmeet in to Anil’s sinking company to salvage it. But, in matters of heart, business deals don’t figure. While Ranveer has already fallen in ‘love at first sight’ with Anushka Sharma, a contracted singer/dancer on the cruise ship, Ridhima has found her mate in Parmeet’s sworn enemy, Pahwa’s son, Vikrant Massey.

More skeletons come out of the closet as Priyanka declares she could never come to love her husband, Bose. In fact, she still has the hots for Farhan Khan whom her father sent to US to study to keep him away from her. Anil’s business tours were all about his womanising. Farhan is the son of Anil’s manager and not quite a match for Priyanka in Anil’s society. But, to add to the drama, he arrives on the cruise too to grace the occasion and add some life to it.

The young ones prove to be smarter than their elders as they make a pact. Ridhima spends her nights in Vikrant’s cabin while Ranveer spends his with Anushka but Ridhima and Ranveer agree to pretend to be in love. The deal almost materialises as Ranveer’s engagement will be announced with Ridhima against Parmeet’s buying of 49% stake in Anil’s company. To use the social media phrase, ‘it’s complicated’!

Come out of the mess they all do, I mean writers and director with an easy solution that all such films adopt: everybody sees sense suddenly and it is QED!

Dil Dhadakne Do risks filling the screen with numerous characters but you never figure out who is what, especially to Anil and his family or in the story; in a while you stop caring. Except for a concerned few of them, none of the character is defined or explained. The script is loose and the director takes a 1970s art film approach like filming inconsequential scenes endlessly. Also, in an unsuccessful attempt to justify the horde of characters, limelight jumps from one character to another abruptly.

What kind of script have you worked on where a lot of the story is in verbal narration and, not funnily, told by Anil’s family dog (voice of Aamir Khan)! The first half looks warped in a balloon; even if the film moves a bit in the second half, it is partly and haphazardly towards the end. Dialogue is mundane. The editing needs a second go. Music as in songs are no help. Background fails to pace up the proceedings. Visually, the film is good.

Nobody really has a role to make an impact. However, Ranveer and Priyanka emerge the best triers. Anushka’s romantic pairing with Ranveer is a miscast and against public perception. Anil Kapoor’s character is sketched as an illogical one… with his throwing a lavish cruise party while facing bankruptcy to his shouting spree at his grown up children don’t make sense. Shefali is convincing. Farhan is good and so is Vikrant. Rest fill the bill.

Dil Dhadakne Do is an expensive project by all standards with a cast not known to justify such a cost besides being limited in content. Its theatrical take home will be limited to a great extent.
