JBL appoints Makani Creatives as its ad agency

MUMBAI: JBL, one of the leading American audio electronics company currently owned by Harman International, has roped in Makani Creatives as its advertising agency. This development comes close after the decision on deployment of major funds to step up marketing activities and ramp up technology.

JBL has already launched a strong campaign with celebrities Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra in order to target the youth and engage the users by launching a music video called ‘Just Be Loud’ created by Kookie Gulati from SOBO films.

Makani Creatives will now roll out campaigns in sync with the brand thought process – ‘Just Be Loud’. The agency has a repertoire of youth, fashion and retail brands which makes it the natural choice to partner with JBL.

JBL director Sahil Sani said, “JBL has been a key force in developing independent divisions for audio equipment for consumer home market and professional equipment for studio, installed sounds, tour sound, portable sound (production and DJ) and cinema markets. Over the last few years, we have managed to make our presence felt in most sound and audio sectors.”

“Our key focus now, is to increase the reach and awareness, and build on our strength as a preferred choice for end-consumers. In order to meet this objective, we are thrilled to partner with Makani Creatives as our brand agency. With them on board, we are now gearing up for the new brand identity – ‘Just Be Loud’ and innovative marketing campaigns in the near future. We chose Makani Creatives for their clear understanding of our brand, proven record for delivering some of the most successful ad campaigns and focus on delivering business results,” he further added.

Makani Creatives MD Sameer Makani said, ‘‘JBL is a young and dynamic brand which has revolutionised the audio category, that being of head phones, headsets and bluetooth speakers. We were very charged by this proposition and that lead to a fine campaign we presented to JBL. In fact, they were quite impressed and that’s how we bagged their luxury division, Harman Kardon as well. The first set of work for JBL will be out shortly and I am sure that this will be one of the first steps of a successful journey together, we intend to take with this brand.”

  • ‘Kill/Dil’… Will too

    ‘Kill/Dil’… Will too

MUMBAI: The stories of orphan children turning into juvenile delinquents who then graduate to hard core criminals have become rather commonplace. One of YRF’s own recent films, Gunday, is one such example. Here is another.

Govinda, a don of some sort whose main business is to accept supari killing contracts, finds two tiny tots in a garbage bin. The boys grow up into Ranveer Singh and Ali Zafar. The boys get into petty crimes as soon as they learn to stand on their two feet. They are invincible. Nobody ever catches them or hits back. Soon they also become bullet proof as they take to guns becoming Govinda’s main shooters.

When they are not shooting down people out of the blue, they also have lot of fun. After all, they have never let Govinda down and he, on his part, has been generous with them. And, between the assignments they have nothing to do except spend that money.

Their home is Delhi and soon the Delhi culture brings them, especially Singh, face to face with his future romance, Parineeti Chopra. At this pub, the duo of Zafar and Singh are guzzling their alcohol when on the dance floor, someone makes a pass at Parineeti who in turn tells him off. The lad pulls a gun on Parineeti giving Singh a chance to save her and drive the villain off.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Shaad Ali.

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar, Parineeti Chopra, Govinda.

Romance blossoms between Singh and Parineeti, which Singh knows Govinda won’t approve of. To add to that, for the first time ever, Singh fails to shoot a person he has been assigned to eliminate. While Govinda is livid, Singh’s conscience has caught up with him. He wants to change his ways and lead an honest life to be worthy of Parineeti. For her part, Parineeti has herself given up a career where she could have made enough money to instead take up the challenge of helping ex-convicts settle into a normal life away from crime. He even starts selling insurance policies. Unaware of Singh’s background, this is one more criminal she is helping turn honest.

When Govinda is sure Singh is now out of his control, he plays a double game. He asks one of his men to kill Singh while he warns Zafar what is about to happen and also tells Parineeti how she will soon know what Singh’s past is.

Having found out about Singh, Parineeti now does not want anything to do with him. On his part, Govinda’s purpose has been served as Singh returns to the fold and is ready for his next assignment. But, with Parineeti on his mind, Singh draws his gun but does not manage to fire, giving his victim the chance to shoot at him and receiving a bullet in his back for his efforts.

However, not having got a chance to tell his story to Parineeti, Singh has made a disc of his life story and sent it to Parineeti who sobs as she watches it and wants Singh back.

Kill/Dil has a weak plot and shoddy script which starts bad and goes on deteriorating as it progresses. By the second half, it is a mess. Direction is lacklustre. Musically, this 127-minute film is crowded with nine songs, probably to make up for lack of content. Photography is not up to the mark. Performance wise, Govinda is good while Zafar is passable. Singh looks funny in his clean-shaven look sans moustache; there is nothing different about his acting from other films. Parineeti’s role is ill-defined.

Kill/Dil, trying to be a thriller, a romance, and a comedy and fails to deliver on all fronts.

  • Fans get clicking for Parineeti

    Fans get clicking for Parineeti

MUMBAI: They say a picture is worth a thousand words in the social media space, Instagram puts that theory to practice.  So when an actress as vivacious and candid as Parineeti Chopra, (who recently tweeted “Finally getting onto Instagram. Too excited! Follow me on parineetichopra”), decides to get on to Instagram, we can’t help but wait to see what she’s going to be up to on the platform.

Instagram is the mothership for selfie addicts, so Parineeti who debuts on Instagram on October 22nd (her birthday) has decided to celebrate this trend with a difference!  Parineeti, in association with Fluence, the leading celebrity digital network, has asked all her selfie-addicted fans to send her their most animated selfies on her birthday. Adding to this Parineeti said, “Birthdays are about doing something fun and interesting. This year I’ve decided to join Instagram, something I’ve been contemplating for a while now. To add to the fun, I’ve thrown in a selfie challenge for all my fans with a little help from Fluence! I can’t wait to see their response. Now that I’m on Insta, I’m sure it’s going to be fun.”

The actress will collate the entries into a collage which will be her debut picture on Instagram. Commenting on Parineeti’s Instagram debut, Ashish Joshi, VP Digital & Business Head – Fluence says, “We are thrilled to launch the talented and spontaneous Parineeti on Instagram on the occasion of her birthday. Selfies have become an integral part of our lives today and they are a way of expressing oneself. Parineeti’s debut on Instagram will further elevate her engagement with her fans.”

But what we can’t wait for, is seeing her inputs on Instagram which we hope reflects the many moods of this incredibly talented ‘drama queen’ who can kill multiple ‘dil’s with a twinkle of an eye and her charming smile.

Fans of Parineeti can now feature on Parineeti’s board by sharing their craziest selfies with #parineetichopra.

Here’s wishing Parineeti an expressive, selfie-filled birthday.

  • ‘Khoobsurat’….. Not really!

    ‘Khoobsurat’….. Not really!

MUMBAI: Khoobsurat borrows its basic plot from the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee film of the same name. Hrishikesh Mukherjee films were known for their simplicity and yet they appealed to all classes. His film was about a middleclass joint family where the matriarch of the house, Dina Pathak, runs her household with an iron fist and total domination. In the latest Khubsoorat, writer-director Shashanka Ghosh decides to give the simple Mukherjee film a ‘royal touch’ and massacres it royally.

Sonam Kapoor is a physiotherapist working with the Indian Premiere League helping the likes of Dhoni and Shehwag and some alien entity called Kapoor who is so much in pain, he refuses to go out to bat until this physiotherapist gives his leg an almost fatal jerk! Something that could have handicapped someone else has cured Mr Kapoor! He is fit enough to go out and hit the last winning six. One thought, each IPL team had its own physio, here, the ‘poor’ IPL has only one for all the teams.

Her credentials having been established and her reputation having travelled far and wide, she is invited to be an in-house physio to some ex-royal in Rajasthan. This ex-royal, Aamir Raza Hussain, has been wheelchair-bound since his accident ten years ago. He has so far dismissed about 40 physios trying to cure him. The fact is he doesn’t want to be cured. He holds himself responsible for the death of his 20-year-old-son, who died in a sports car crash that he had gifted him.

Sonam enters the house and falls in love with the palace, its opulence and the luxury of the room assigned to her. This is just the beginning as more falling in love is yet to happen; which is, falling in love with the prince, Fawad Afzal Khan. Towards this end, her mother, Kirron Kher, encourages her every day on their regular Skype chats; this film may have turned Mukherjee’s idea of Khoobsurat from middle-class to royal while, at the same time, trying to make it contemporary.

Sonam’s idea of physiotherapy for the reluctant royal is to take him around his gardens in a whirlwind wheelchair ride. The queen, Ratna Pathak, disapproves of her from day one and keeps making faces day after day. The prince Fawad keeps hovering around her despite being a very busy businessman. Earlier, it is established that he is engaged to be married to another royal, Aditi Rao Hydari.

While Aamir Raza is getting cured merely by wheeling at jet speed around his palace and Pathak keeps making same faces of disapproval for Sonam, Fawad, and Sonam keep getting attracted to each other until they graduate to their first kiss.

Comparing this film in any way to Mukherjee’s Khoobsurat is a sacrilege. The film and its makers have no sense of script, little sense of direction, and none for music. To sum it up, they have scant sense of filmmaking. The dialogue is pedestrian. Being a love story, the musical score needed to be strong but turns out to be poor and just one song, Naina…, is hummable. Editing is poor.

Sonam plays the lead in this, her home production. She is a let-down acting-wise, looks-wise and dressing-wise. The makeup makes her look much older. Her clumsy, loud character seems to have been built around My Fair Lady; she is uncouth, which she blames on being half Punjabi from her mother’s side! Fawad, otherwise, known to be a very natural and endearing actor from what one sees of him on TV, is wasted; he is made to carry just one-and-a-half expressions throughout the film. Fawad’s greatest asset, his smile, is at a premium here. Ratna’s casting, in a role her mother played in the 1980 original, is supposed to be the casting coup, but backfires with poor etching of her character. Aamir Raza is turned into caricatures.

Producers: Rhea Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Sidharth Roy Kapoor

    Director: Shashanka Ghosh.

Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Afzal Khan, Ratna Pathak, Aamir Raza Hussain.

    ‘Daawat-e-Ishq’: No thanks…

Yash Raj Films have been trying new subjects for some time now. With Daawat-e-Ishq, they try to bring back a Muslim background love story. But, this is a love story with an angle of dowry and getting back at dowry seekers. It also tries to juxtapose two prominent Muslim cultures, those of Hyderabad and Lucknow.

Parineeti Chopra is a shoe shop sales girl in Hyderabad even as she continues to study for she is a topper who wants to specialise in shoe designing. Her father, Anupam Kher, is a clerk in the high court two years short of retirement. He is honest and hence, of limited means.

It is time to look for a suitor for Parineeti. The problem for Anupam and Parineeti is that, her qualification does not count for anything to the boys’ families. The amount of dowry is what matters to them. This leads to a chain of rejections for her. Kher has a limit of 15 lakh but the gap is too much between what he can manage and what the boys’ parents demand. Since dowry is a bad word, one boy’s parents ask Kher to ‘help’ their son go to the US for further studies; all he needs is 80 lakh for that purpose.

Parineeti is an aggressive girl and keeps throwing out such parents. She decides that marriage is not for her and, instead, embarks on a mission to trap such families who demand dowries and have them sent to jail. Kher takes some convincing but finally agrees to the plan. Doing this in their native Hyderabad would be too risky so their choice falls on Lucknow.

The father daughter duo go for a total makeover, pose as millionaires from Dubai and check in at a five star Lucknow hotel. Next, they shortlist grooms from a marriage website and invite them for a meeting. A camera has been placed to record the proceedings of all such interviews. One of them happens to be Aditya Roy Kapur. He runs the city’s famous restaurant known for its kebabs, biryani etc with century old recipes inherited from his forefathers.

Kapur is a simple hearted only son of his parents, popular with his customers as well as all around the city. For wedding, his parents’ wish list would cost Kher a cool 40 lakh. Parineeti agrees to the proposal and decides the nikaah would take place in two days’ time. However, Kapur wants three days to meet and know Parineeti better. After all her idea is to marry and then file a complaint with the police and demand a huge sum to settle the matter.

The plan works, Kher and Parineetti walk off with a huge loot for Parineeti to pursue her dream of studying designing in the US. But, what she did not on count has happened. She has fallen in love with Kapur in those three days.

The problem with this film is that it takes over half an hour to come to the real story before it sets up the background for Parineeti’s plan of taking on a dowry seeker. And when it happens, there are no twists and turns and lacks in drama of any sort. The approach to direction and storytelling is lacklustre. There are no highlights. The film has a catchy musical score with a blend of old world charm. Dialogue is routine. There is little about performances that stays with a viewer. Parineeti is her usual self. Kapur is over the top, loud being his idea of projecting simplicity. Kher is okay.

Daawat-e-Ishq is a routine fare below expectations.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Habib Faisal.

Cast: Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Anupam Kher.

Alia Bhatt becomes ‘Genius of the Year’

MUMBAI: She tried altering India’s political landscape through ignorant replies during her appearance on the chat show Koffee with Karan. Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt then went on to become the reigning queen of santa-banta jokes on social media.

But that hasn’t deterred the 21 year old who used her half witted comments into an opportunity to get back at everyone who laughed at her. In a new video put up by comedy group All India Backchod, the actress has truly become the ‘Genius of the Year.’

The hilarious video begins with a short message- In 2014 a documentary crew followed ‘Alia Bhatt in the aftermath of her Koffee with Karan debacle.’ She is then seen visiting Dumb Belle Mental Gym which offers her to transform her from ‘Dolce and Gabbana to Smart like Shabana (Azmi)’

Here, she is recommended a healthy diet consisting of newspapers and novels and is made to do away from junk food like Bollywood gossip. Her BMI (Brain Mein IQ) which was nearly nonexistent receives a boost of knowledge through music. Bhatt then finds herself again on the gossip show Koffee with Karan and stuns the cold soul host Johar with her sharp replies.

    The documentary also features other Bollywood actors like Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, her father and filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and mentor Karan Johar. Her two famous songs;

‘Saturday Saturday’ from Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania has been changed to ‘Faraday Faraday’, while ‘Radha On The Dance Floor’ has been made into ‘Sodium On The Dance Floor’.

Available online, it’s indeed a treat for both her fans and critics and is directed by Shakun Batra.

  • Is B’wood moving towards equality?

    Is B’wood moving towards equality?

MUMBAI: It has been spoken about many times, but this year seems to attest that Bollywood is actually shunning gender-biases and is moving towards equality. That is what is evident from the movies releasing this year. Many movies of the year are giving prominence to its female actors.

While Parineeti Chopra’s character in Hasee Toh Phasee is a well-etched out role with eccentricities that makes it stand out among all the other characters in the film (even the hero Siddharth Malhotra), in this week’s release – Highway – Alia’s character has been written with similar fervor as well. In fact, Alia’s father and one of the most lauded filmmakers of the country – Mahesh Bhatt – thinks that Alia has ‘lived’ the role of her lifetime.

“Thank you Imtiaz Ali for making Alia ‘live’ the role of her life time. The women of our country will empathise with this heartfelt tale,” wrote Bhatt on Facebook.

In the months to come, Bollywood is going to spring up many such surprises where women will get a chance to not just live their lives but raise the bar too. Many movies with strong women characters and centered around women are going to make a mark at the big screen.

There’s Queen starring Kangana Ranaut that tells the story of a girl whose wedding is called off when her fiancé passes away and she, instead of crying over her situation, decides to move on. The focus of the film is on the character growing up as an individual.

Another one in the pipeline is Gulaab Gang starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla among host of other female actors. Again a woman-centric film based around the activist group Gulaabi Gang, shows how women have started getting prominence in the film industry with diverse being written for them.

One of the other movies being looked forward to is Bobby Jasoos starring Vidya Balan in which she portrays the character of a sleuth. The film is not just being anticipated as Indian cinema’s answer to detective films but probably is also one of the first in India to be bringing in a female actor to play a sleuth.

Mary Kom’s biopic with Priyanka Chopra portraying the sportstar in the film is another addition to the list. While biopics are any way not too regular in India, one on a female sportstar is something very rare. And thus this is one movie that every movie buff is waiting for, especially after Irrfan and Farhan Akhtar have raised the bar of getting in to the skin of the real life people they portrayed in Paan Singh Tomar and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Priyanka is surely being watched out for in this upcoming movie.

Doesn’t it seem to be a great year for women in the film industry?
