Sunny Leone fails to grab eyeballs at box office

MUMBAI: It is sex over sermon and Sunny Leone scores over legendary actors Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah and Annu Kapoor as her first double role film, Ek Paheli Leela, scores over talent packed Dharam Sankat Mein.

Not that Ek Paheli Leela is great shakes. It remained on the lower side on Friday and failed to add to its opening day figures on Saturday. The film ended its first weekend with figures of Rs 11.2 crore mainly on the strength of its performance at single screens.

Dharam Sankat Mein lacked in the pre-release promotion and suffered on this count. The film had a poor opening despite stalwarts like Rawal, Shah and Malik in the cast. The comparison to Rawal’s trendsetting OMG: Oh My God was inevitable and Dharam Sanakat Mein fell short by miles besides the fact that quite a few films on the similar theme have followed OMG. The film gets a poor opening and barely manages to cross the Rs 1 crore-mark on its opening day and hardly improves on Saturday. The film has had a weekend of Rs 5.1 crore.

Barefoot To Goa stays out of contention as far as box office is concerned. Such group funded idealistic films need a commercial approach.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, another small film after Dum Laga Ke Haisha from Yash Raj Films, remains average. An indulgent film based on the WW2 era Bengali fictional character, the film falls prey to its mediocre content. It manages to collect Rs 19.97 crore for the first week. The film has added Rs 3.27 for its second weekend to take its two week tally to Rs 23.14 crore.

Barkhaa is a lost cause. The film fails to cross Rs 1 crore mark even after two weeks.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha has collected Rs 35 lakh in its sixth week to take its six week tally to Rs 30.32 crore.

NH10 added Rs 30 lakh in its fourth week to take its four-week total to Rs 30.5 crore.

Far from the days when English films released in India eons after their premiere release in the West, that too at one Metro at a time, Fast & Furious 7, released at multiple screens across India and opened to a bumper response.

The fact that the brand equity had been built over the years helped as did the ensemble star cast. The film collected better than many Hindi super star films in its first week with figures of about Rs 70 crore.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s foray into Hollywood cinema with Broken Horses, a rehash of his 1989 Hindi film Parinda, comes a cropper. The film has gone almost unnoticed in Indian cinemas.

  • “CBFC should examine a film’s message & not ban it due to some scenes”: Paresh Rawal

“CBFC should examine a film’s message & not ban it due to some scenes”: Paresh Rawal

NEW DELHI: In the wake of fingers being pointed at the current Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman Pahlaj Nahalani’s questionable decisions regarding many a films that have come up for release recently, veteran actor Paresh Rawal has said that the message of a film and not some shots here or there should come in for scrutiny before the CBFC.

Rawal said that every film may contain one or two scenes that may hurt someone, but what has to be seen is whether the message sought to be conveyed by the film is meaningful. He felt that the work of the CBFC was a thankless job.

Referring to protests held outside film theatres, often by persons who had not even bothered to see the concerned film, Rawal said this was sad. He added that even the communal divides in the country often occurred because of misinformation.

Denying reports that his latest film Dharam Sankat Mein had been shown to some religious leaders to get their approval, he said it would be a “dangerous trend if a film is shown to extra-constitutional authorities.”

Rawal, who was in the Capital for promoting the film along with actor Annu Kapoor, said: “Even a serious message if conveyed lightly manages to make an impact.”

Replying to a question posed by Indiantelevision.com about the run-of-the-mill comedies that he acts in along with some meaningful cinema, he said that it should not be forgotten that it was the money made from those so-called trashy comedies, which helped him take serious cinema even at fees far lower than he would otherwise get.

Rawal revealed that he was making the biopic on Narendra Modi under his own banner. He said that films on Modi had been made in Gujarati, but never in Hindi. The movie is slated to go on floors in August.

He also said a sequel to OMG was underway with him, Akshay Kumar and Mithun Chakraborty.

Rawal informed that he loved serious cinema and therefore his most memorable films were Sardar, which was a biopic on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Road to Sangam, and OMG – Oh my God.

Hailing from the theatre background, Rawal had never planned his career in cinema when he came on the big screen in 1984.

Answering a question, he said that he had cut down the number of films he would do to three or four a year, after become a Member of Parliament. However, he said he was an actor first, then an MP. Rawal also informed that his perspective about Parliament had changed since he became an MP.

Stressing that the country faced problems because there was no ‘Manav Dharam’ or ‘Rashtra Dharam,’ Rawal said that if people loved their country, there would have been no need for the Government to announce programmes on Swachh Bharat or sanitation.

Agreeing to his point of view, Kapoor said that problems like rape etc. were not confined to India, but Indians themselves often talked about them as if they were ashamed of being Indian but did little to stop these crimes. He said Manav Dharam should be uppermost. He added that while there was freedom of speech, why did people resort to freedom of action.

When asked about simultaneously acting in comedy and serious films, he said that every theatre person learnt to have a ‘switch on, switch off’ quality and therefore he has no problem going from the set of light film to that of a serious one.

Speaking about the message that their latest film conveys, Kapoor said, “We are sure that you’ll learn something from this film and the message it gives is of ‘humanity’ and that of all religions, humanity is the biggest religion.”

Directed by Fuwad Khan and produced by Sajjad Chunawala, Dharam Sankat Meinis a remake of the 2010 British comedy film The Infidel and also stars Naseeruddin Shah.

The story revolves around a character named Dharam Pal, played by Rawal, who faces the dilemma of choosing between two religions and goes through identity crises when he discovers that what he believed himself to be was actually born to a Muslim family.

The film is slated for release on 10 April.

MUMBAI: Viacom18 Motion Pictures is all set to release the Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah and Annu Kapoor starrer Dharam Sankat Mein on 10 April.

The movie is a sequel to OMG – Oh! My God, which also starred Akshay Kumar along with Rawal.

In the upcoming satirical film, Rawal will be seen playing a father, a maulwi and a pundit. Dharam Sankat Meinis the story of a man torn by the dilemma of choosing between two religions.

Rawal plays Dharampal, a man caught in an identity crisis of epic proportions. His entire belief system is shaken when documents from his departed mother’s locker reveal to him that instead of being what he believed himself to be – an average upper middle class Hindu – he was actually born to a Muslim family.

Speaking about his role, Rawal said, “The film goes into a series of hilarious events that follows once I figure my true identity. Dharam Sankat Mein is an important film wherein a good message is being delivered through a rib tickling story.”

Talking about his journey so far in the film industry, Rawal added, “I’m fortunate to have got the opportunity to play interesting characters. I hope to continue entertaining the audience and my fans.”

  • Zee Cinema to premiere ‘Raja Natwarlal’

Zee Cinema to premiere ‘Raja Natwarlal’

MUMBAI: Zee Cinema, the first Hindi movie channel in India, promises ‘Movies. Masti. Magic’ to its viewers and is now all set for its latest World Television Premiere. Coming up on Saturday, 29th November at 8 PM is the entertaining thriller ‘Raja Natwarlal’.

The film stars versatile actor Emraan Hashmi in a revenge drama laced with elements of crime and dark humour, which promises to keep the audience at the edge of their seats with power-packed performances. Other stellar actors who share screen space with Emraan are Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon, Deepak Tijori and newbie Humaima Malick at their acting best. The film is directed by Kunal Deshmukh of ‘Jannat’ fame and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur.

Commenting on the film, Emraan Hashmi says, “I am very happy to have starred in a full-fledged, entertaining, commercial film. It is about giving the audience the ‘paisa vasool’ cinema. I am coming back to the basics with this commercial masala, entertainer which I feel that my audience somehow was missing out on for a long time. I never thought I’d do a con film ever because I find them very superficial but this one has a heart, a soul and emotions flowing in. There is a dramatic reason for the character to play a scamster and that’s what I liked most. I’m sure my viewers will like it too.”

The movie is a complete package of emotions, drama, a street-smart hero and lots of comedy coupled with a lot of catchy songs.  The song ‘Tere Hoke Rahenge’ topped all the music charts across.  Moreover, Bollywood’s celebrated singers like Arijit Singh, Benny Dayal and Mika Singh have given their voices for the film, with songs like Namak Paare and ‘Flip Your Collar Back.

The movie centers around Raja (EmraanHashmi), a small-time conman, who successfully tricks people out of their money with his partner in crime Raghav (Deepak Tijori). Raja’s love interest Ziya(HumaimaMalick), a bar girl, pushes him towards building a more comfortable and hassle free life. Thus Raja decides to target Don Varda Yadav (Kay KayMenon) and his men for one final con job that will earn him the big bucks and a settled life with Ziya. Though the con is pulled off successfully, Varda Yadav gets Raghav killed. Raja seeks revenge with the help of a seasoned crook Yogi (PareshRawal). Will Yogi and Raja pull of the ultimate heist? And, will Raja get revenge in the due course?

Tune-in to this year’s best con film ‘Raja Natwarlal’ on Saturday,29 November at 8pm only on Zee Cinema

  • Raja Natwarlal…The con is on you!

Raja Natwarlal…The con is on you!

MUMBAI: Raja Natwarlal is yet another Emraan Hashmi fare where he plays a street smart guy who walks on the other side of the law. In his other films, he ends up in romance with an educated/ well placed girl but never lives to tell his story. Here, for a change, he wins it all, his life, his loot as well as his girl and even lives to threaten you with a sequel as is the norm nowadays. There has been a recent con movie in Special 26 (a comparison would be sacrilege) but, Raja Natwarlal is a lift from the 1973 Paul Newman- Robert Redford movie all the way, The Sting, which was about conning people in the name of horse racing, while this one is about doing the same in the name of cricket, the only sport all of India identifies with.

Raja, Emraan Hashmi, is nowhere close to the legendary, Mithilesh Kumar Srivastav aka Natwarlal, the ace conman recorded on Indian police’s history. This guy is a petty conman who picks pockets, or lures vulnerable passer bye on a Mumbai road to gamble on the new version of Rani dhundho, a three card game. Only he changes it to Deepika dhundho as against two cards displaying late Nirupa Roy (bad taste). His partner is these petty tricks is Deepak Tijori, also his mentor and ‘like’ a brother.

In a seedy Mumbai beer bar, Hashmi overhears about an 80 lakh cash transaction between two shadowy people sharing a table next to his. Hashmi smells a major breakthrough to graduate to bigger cons. After all, he needs money as his Rs 10 notes he showers on his love interest, Humaima Malik, in a dance bar where she performs, always looked small compared to a Marwari, also besotted by her who dealt in bigger currencies when it came to pleasing her.

However, Tijori is not very forthcoming with this proposal of Hashmi of planning an 80 lakh hit and he knows the goons dealing in that kind of money can be very dangerous. Hashmi manages to convince Tijori averring to him as this being their first step towards big times. So, the deed is done, 80 lakh is lifted from the goons’ car. It is made to look as easy as removing a car stereo system. Both share the loot equally. While Hashmi goes to the dance bar to shower Rs 1000 notes on Mallik and Tijori spends some on buying gifts for his beloved wife, the victims are soon on their trail.

Tijori is wise enough to know he has been cornered by his victims, he offers to return his share of the loot which he does and gets a few bullets in his chest even as Hashmi watches from a distance. It is revenge time for Hashmi and the idea is to get to the big boss of the guys who killed his friend. The big shot, Kay Kay Menon, who made it big from being a petty con himself, has made it big and to keep away from the Indian police, stays put in Cape Town, South Africa.

But, before taking up this adventurous trip, Hashmi approaches Paresh Rawal, a retired con wizard. Rawal has retired in the land of the Dalai Lama, Dharamshala, for no apparent reason (just a change of location for you).  Rawal logs in with Hashmi, because, after all, Tijori, who was killed by Kay Kay, was his kid brother.

The gang of Hashmi and Rawal descends on South Africa which, while it may not offer much else, does try to please you with a change of location. Kay Kay has one weakness, cricket and its memorabilia. They plan to exploit this weakness but Kay Kay reads them like an open book and the insipid one-upmanship continues till the climax when, unconvincing as it may sound, the heroes win! Not to mention there are no heroes in the whole setup because it is one conman against another and may the better conman win. They have cleaned out Kay Kay wealth amounting to 1500 crore.

Lifting ideas from Hollywood classic is a crime when one taints it, degenerates it and deforms it beyond recognition. Raja Natwarlal is one such. The film has a mediocre script and the ‘I got it’ direction approach. The film takes its audience for granted most of the time but the makers seem to realise their folly and try to explain in last few minutes what happened all along and why and how; some story telling this!! . Musical score, a vital part for a Hashmi film, is a let down here. So does the renowned Hashmi kissing scenes as he might as well be kissing a mannequin instead of Humaima. This film needed a great dialogue track which is just mediocre here. Background music is on familiar tracks.

While Hashmi does his usual stuff one is familiar with from his past many films, Paresh Rawal and Menon land some credibility to the cast and deliver to expectations. Humaima is a bad choice as the heroine as well as the one deserving of the famous Hashmi kisses. The collective star cast does well though some of the casting (as in Mumbai corrupt cop) is out of place.

Raja Natwarlal is a poor fare having opened to poor opening response. In Mumbai, Maharashtra Gujarat, CP, parts of CI and Marathwada in Nizam circuits will be further affected due to the 11-day Ganpati festival starting on the same day as the film’s release.

    Producer: Siddharth Roy Kapoor.

    Director: Kunal Deshmukh.

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Humaima Malik, Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon, Deepak Tijori.

  • Zee hopes for a miracle with ‘Neeli Chhatri Wale’

Zee hopes for a miracle with ‘Neeli Chhatri Wale’

MUMBAI: From theatre to film and now the small screen, the story of a common man coming face-to-face with God one day has come full circle.

Zee TV’s next weekend fiction show ‘Neeli Chhatri Wale’ is about a man who has the privilege of meeting and befriending God.

Produced by Ashwini Dhir, the show which tells a story of Bhagwan Das played by Yashpal Sharma, will start from 30 August and air on Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm. Bhagwan Das, a middle-aged, middle class man based out of Kanpur is constantly torn between his personal and professional life. One day, a smartly dressed man carrying a blue umbrella emerges, a man who embodies Lord Shiva.

What is noticeable is that the shows, ‘Bh se Bhade’ and ‘Gangs of Hasseepur’ aired on the same slot haven’t done well for the channel. Currently, the channel telecasts special programming and movies on weekends.

“Yes, we agree that earlier shows haven’t worked and ‘Bh se Bhade’ wasn’t a good effort from our side. However, the current programme looks very promising and should be able to catch people’s attention,” says a highly placed source from Zee TV.

The light-hearted drama can be compared to Akshay Kumar – Paresh Rawal starring ‘OMG, Oh My God’ where Kumar essayed the role of Lord Krishna.

The show has already got presenting partner in Karbonn and promos have broken on television along with digital promotion on social media. To create buzz before it launches, the channel sent out cupcakes to journalists as well.

On the marketing front, the channel is leaving no stone unturned to promote exploratory relationship between man and God as friend. Making it a complete family unifier, the marketing word is based on the philosophy that ‘God lies within us’ all we have to do is listen to our inner voice.

The concept of the show is being promoted using a media mix of print, radio and a comprehensive television plan comprising a bouquet of channels spread across genres.

A three phase digital campaign has been planned to engage with its digital audience. The first part of the digital campaign started with #MyInnerVoice which the channel claims was very well received by consumers.

All the marketing initiatives will aim at making God accessible to one and all by spreading the message of ‘Listen to your #InnerVoice’.

Through the series, the channel aims to revamp its weekend slot. However, media planners are a little apprehensive. “Earlier too the slot with fiction shows hasn’t worked well for the channel and with competition showing Yo Yo Honey Singh, it looks like a tough battle to win. Zee should continue to air movies or special programmes,” says a planner.

Having said that, another planner doesn’t want to strike the new show out and feels that movies and plays on the same theme have worked well and if told properly, the series might be able to grab eyeballs.
