    Waheeda Rehman to be honoured with cinema Centenary Award at IFFI

    MUMBAI: Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman will be honoured with the first cinema Centenary Award at International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on 20 November, the opening day of the festival. The award has been introduced this year and the actress will be the first one to receive it.

     

    This news has been confirmed by Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari. He tweeted saying, “Congratulations to Waheeda Rehmanji for being conferred the inaugural Centenary Award for the Indian Film Personality of the year 2013.” Other than this, the actress has already bagged honours like the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011.

     

    The 44th edition of IFFI would be held at Panjim Goa from 20 November, 2013 with Susan Sarandon as the chief guest.

    MUMBAI: Though, he did not officially hold the title of CEO, he will be giving up his position as managerial chief of the group while still staying as editorial chief. In a letter to his employees, he stated that the company was no longer in ‘crisis’ and it was time for him to step down.

     

    Indian Express chairman and MD Viveck Goenka will be assisted by a newly appointed CEO George Verghese to undertake operations. Gupta will be devoting more time to EXIMs, their media institute. He also mentioned in the letter that there is a need for a more structured and formally organised corporate leadership for the group.

     

    In 2009 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of Journalism. He has a weekly column in the newspaper and hosts the interview based show ‘Walk the Talk’.

    Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi receive Padma Bhushan from President

    MUMBAI: Bollywood stars Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi received Padma Bhushan awards from President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Wednesday. Late cartoonist Mario Miranda was conferred the Padma Vibhushan.

    The colourful ceremony saw Miranda‘s son Rahul receive the Padma Vibhushan at Rashtrapati Bhawan amidst thunderous applause from guests. But the loudest applause was reserved for Dharamendra and Shabana Azmi when they came on stage to collect their respective awards.

    The ceremony was attended by vice president Hamid Ansari, prime minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and a host of other dignitaries.

    In all, one Padma Vibhshan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 53 Padma Shri awards were presented at the ceremony.

    BANGALORE: A sad day indeed in the annals of the film industry, especially for the Kannada Film industry. The biggest and one of the first superstars of the Kannada Film industry has bid adieu. He was 77.

    Dr Rajkumar, who complained of breathlessness about a month ago, had been admitted to M S Ramaiah Hospital. He succumbed to a cardiac arrest today as per the initial reports that have come in. The thespian, a winner of the Padma Bhushan along with a host of other awards and citations has encouraged the use of Kannada language in the state.

    Though very well known in South India, he came to national light when he was kidnapped and kept in custody for 109 days by notorious sandal wood smuggler the late Veerappan in 2000.

    The city of Bangalore has literally come to a standstill, following the demise. Crowds have been thronging to his residence along with a number of top Bangalore based politicians.
