    Pacific Century Matrix looking to penetrate Indian market

    Hong Kong-based satellite broadband service provider Pacific Century Matrix (PCM) is looking at forging alliances through one or more partners to offer its product in the country.

    At the Workshop on DVB and Internet Protocol which took place in Delhi, PCM’s India head Sandeep Bhargava told indiantelevision.com today that it was looking at increasing its customer-base in India.

    Bhargava disclosed that the current list of customers of the company includes Internet Service Providers and even some broadcasters. He however added: “But I cannot tell you the names now as it is a competitive business and we are in the process of establishing a full-fledged operation in India.”

    Senior V-P business development of PCM Patrick Yeung said that it would be more advantageous for the company to develop business relationships in markets like India rather than operate out of the headquarters based in Hong Kong. 

    PCM’s suite of innovative satellite solutions is designed to meet the most demanding of communications requirements. With access to over 110 million connected households, PCM claims to provide direct access into the homes of some 400 million viewers and users.

    The video broadcasting services include:
    1. Turnaround of foreign TV programmes from international regions to Asia pacific in analog and digital format.
    2. Broadcasting on satellites to high-demand neighbourhoods.
    3. One-off services as well as occasional use for special events and satellite news gathering.

    The company founded in 1999, is a joint venture between Richard Li-promoted Pacific Century Group and European Aeronautics Defence & Space Company (EADS). The joint venture is a facility-based telecommunications services operator offering DVB/IP broadcasting services for TV broadcasters, a range of one-way and interactive broadband data delivery and network management end-to-end solutions for multimedia business, content and service providers.

    Pacific Century Matrix (PCM), Asia-Pacific’s leading provider of satellite-based broadband connectivity and network solutions is holding a workshop on DVB / IP over Satellite on 5 July in New Delhi.

    The day-long workshop will focus on satellite broadband in India, an overview of PCM’s products and services and VoIP in India. It will also have presentations by equipment suppliers and ground operators as well as a discussion on IP performance over satellite.

    PCM offers DVB/IP broadcasting services for television broadcasters, and a range of one-way and interactive broadband services for multimedia business, major corporations and content providers. Through its joint demonstration via satellite, customers will be able to obtain first hand experience of its services/ products combination, says a company release.

    The workshop will allow participants to get connected with main players in the industry including local Internet Service Providers, Broadcasters, Regulatory Bodies, Educational Institutions and Corporations in India, the release states.

    The sessions are being chaired by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India member R.R.N Prasad.

    The key note speakers include:
    • Internet Services Provider Association of India secretary Amitabh Singhal.
    •Call Centre Association of India president Guru Hariharan.
    •Telecommunication Engineering Centre deputy director general – satellite Ashok Golas.
    •Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited managing director KRP Verma.

    Among the other guests who have confirmed their attendance include: Prasar Bharati officer on special duty Chellum Bose, DD director engineering Y Pratap. According to PCM’s country representative Sandeep Bhargava, more than 96 professional involved in Internet services, call centres, satellite services, broadcast engineering have confirmed their attendance.

    He adds that the co-sponsors include: DSL Dishnet, MCBS, Pentagon Systems, Space Link, and Malibu Network.

    Pacific Century Matrix adds Alive Networks to satellite platform

    Pacific Century Matrix on Saturday enhanced its broadband satellite services with the addition of Alive Networks – the first international travel and learning company, using a unique combination of media channels – including TV, Internet, mobile devices and printed travel guides.

    Alive’s television channel is multiplexed onto PCM’s DVB/IP satellite platform. The service joins the bouquet of other PCM television and data services being transmitted from Hong Kong, via PCM’s C-Band transponders on the AsiaSat 3S satellite. Currently four transponders are used to support PCM’s services to television broadcasters, Internet Services Providers, multinational corporations and content providers, across the Asia-Pacific region from the Russian Federation to Australia and from the Pacific Ocean to the Middle East, covering more than 66% of the world’s population, according to a company release.

    PCM will undergo further dramatic expansion with the launch of its own broadband satellites, specifically designed for the burgeoning converged multimedia, IP data and Internet markets. The first satellite is scheduled for operation in mid 2003.
