AMC Networks to develop a series on ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’

Mumbai: US cable company AMC Networks has opened a writers’ room to develop a TV show based on the Oscar-nominated movie Good Night, and Good Luck.

Oscar winner George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and their Smokehouse Pictures banner brought the project to AMC along with participants and 2929 productions. Heslov will direct the first episode of the series.

“AMC is known for intriguing, deeply rooted characters that leap off the screen and into the cultural zeitgeist. Sy Steingartner fits right in with AMC’s icons, and we are excited to develop the character and series,” said AMC Networks president of entertainment and AMC Studios Dan McDermott. “We’re huge fans of Jonathan’s expert storytelling gifts, George and Grant’s producing prowess, Grant’s directing skills, and the vigorous talents of Mark, Todd, and Jeff, and we’re elated to work with all of them in this new endeavour.”

Jonathan Glatzer will be the showrunner and executive producer. Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner of 2,929 are executive producers, along with participant Jeff Skoll. Miura Kite of Participant will also executive produce, along with Haley Jones of 2929. Rebecca Arzoian of Smokehouse will be co-executive producer.

“As a massive fan of the movie, I didn’t want to copy it or just do a facsimile of it. So, we’ve expanded the world to show how the division and hysteria of the times seeped into every aspect of daily life. I suppose it’s more of an origin story of where we are today,” Glatzer said.

“We are exceedingly proud of the Oscar-nominated Good Night, and Good Luck film, and its themes remain frighteningly relevant today, as new threats to democracy arise and trust in the press continues to erode. We are proud to work with AMC, Smokehouse, and 2929 to expand on the world of the film in this thrilling new series,” said Participant CEO David Linde.

Good Night and Good Luck,” and the pressures that the Murrow newsroom faces are more relevant now than ever. We are thrilled to reteam with our partners George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Participant to bring Jonathan Glatzer’s vision of Murrow to new audiences. AMC’s long history of character-driven storytelling make this the ideal collaboration for the new series adaptation,” said 2929 Entertainment CEO Todd Wagner.

  • Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to have own museum in Los Angeles

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to have own museum in Los Angeles

NEW DELHI: Plans for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles have been approved unanimously by the City Council.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which has been giving away the Oscar Awards since 1929 announced that construction will begin this summer, and ceremonial groundbreaking festivities will occur this fall.

“I am thrilled that Los Angeles is gaining another architectural and cultural icon,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “My office of economic development has worked directly with the museum’s development team to ensure that the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will create jobs, support tourism, and pay homage to the industry that helped define our identity as the creative capital of the world.”

“We are grateful to our incredible community of supporters who have helped make this museum a reality,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “Building this museum has been an Academy goal for many years and we wouldn’t be here today without our neighbors on Museum Row, our Board of Governors, our current and past Academy Presidents, members, and of course, our generous donors.”

“I could not think of a better home for the Academy Museum than Museum Row. The museum will be an iconic addition to our city and will inspire generations to come,” said Council member Tom LaBonge, during the final days of his 14 years representing Council District 4, which includes the Academy Museum site on the Miracle Mile.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the Academy Museum will restore and revitalize the historic Wilshire May Company building at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.

The Academy Museum will feature six floors of exhibition spaces, a movie theatre, education studios, special event spaces, conservation areas, and a café and store. A new spherical addition will connect to the May Company building with glass bridges and will feature a state-of-the-art 1,000-seat theater and a rooftop terrace.

“Renzo’s design embodies the museum’s mission: Just as it links the past and present by connecting the May Company building with the new sphere, our exhibitions and programmes will explore the history and future of cinema,” said Kerry Brougher, the Academy Museum’s director. “Our museum will, for the first time, open up the western edge of the campus to the surrounding community, inviting our neighbors onto an open public piazza. Renzo’s sensitivity to location and urbanism will transform this site and make it a gathering place in Los Angeles.”

The main lobby level of the museum will feature public areas including a free introductory gallery. The lobby will connect to the outdoor public piazza and a new pedestrian walkway. The museum also will have a main entrance on Wilshire Boulevard, facilitating easy access for pedestrians and mass transit riders.

“The museum will be the year-round public face of the Academy,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “We will draw on the immense talents of our members to tell the story of motion pictures from a global perspective, for a global audience.”

The Academy Museum’s architectural team comprises Renzo Piano Building Workshop, design architect, in collaboration with Gensler as executive architect. Morley Builders and Taslimi Construction Company are the general contractors, and the building developer is Paratus Group. The museum is scheduled to open in late 2017.

The Academy Museum will feature a core historical exhibition and rotating temporary exhibitions, complemented by special projects, publications, digital initiatives and a slate of public programs that will include screenings, premieres, panel discussions, gallery talks and K–12 education initiatives. The Museum’s exhibitions and programs will convey the magic of cinema and offer a glimpse behind the screen, illuminating the creative, collaborative process of filmmaking.

The Academy launched the Museum’s $300 million capital campaign in 2012, chaired by Bob Iger and co-chaired by Annette Bening and Tom Hanks. The Academy has already secured more than $250 million in pledges from more than 1,300 individual donors globally.

  • Rule change in two categories announced for Oscar Awards

Rule change in two categories announced for Oscar Awards

MUMBAI: For the first time, the entire voting membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will automatically be eligible to vote in all 24 Oscar categories. Academy president Hawk Koch announced this at a meeting of the Academy‘s members.

The Academy‘s Board of Governors approved a plan that will allow members to see the nominated documentary shorts and foreign language films either at a theatrical screening or on DVD.

Prior to the final round of voting, the Academy will provide members with DVDs of the nominated films in five categories: Foreign Language Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Animated Short Film, and Live Action Short Film. In previous years, members had been required to see the nominated films in a theater in order to vote.

Koch said, "This change continues our efforts to expand our members‘ participation in all aspects of the Academy‘s activities including, of course, voting for the Oscars. Building on this past season‘s 90 per cent record voter turnout, we want to give our members as many opportunities as possible to see these great films and vote in these categories next year."

The nomination processes for all categories remain unchanged.

Academy Awards rules are reviewed annually by individual branch and category committees. The Awards Rules Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Board of Governors for approval.

The Oscars will be presented on 2 March 2014 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.

  • ‘Argo’, ‘Life of Pi’ scoop top Oscar Awards

‘Argo’, ‘Life of Pi’ scoop top Oscar Awards

MUMBAI: On Oscar night the ‘Argo‘ juggernaut which had been building ever since the Oscar nominations came out proved unstoppable. The Ben Affleck directed film won three Oscars – Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Editing. It was the first time in over two decades that a film won the Best Picture Oscar without the director being nominated. It also beat four films that had more nominations which has also not happened in a long time. Michelle Obama made the announcement of the winner in the Best Picture category from the White House. Obama‘s appearance was a big surprise as were some of the musical numbers that were performed.

Ang Lee won the Oscar for Best Director. His movie ‘Life of Pi‘ was considered to be the directorial achievement of the year by many film fans since it was adapted from a novel that many felt was ‘unfilmmable‘. ‘Life Of Pi‘ also marked the first time that the director of a 3D film won.

Lee thanked his crew in Taiwan and India. After accepting the trophy, signed off with a ‘Namaste‘ and said (while he was backstage), "Here‘s the thing. I think it‘s a miracle I could make this movie. I carried the anxiety for a very long time. For four years. It‘s a philosophical movie and an expensive one."

‘Life Of Pi‘ won four Oscars, the most for any film, including trophies for visual effects, score, director and cinematography. The technical wins were expected. But to win director Lee had to beat stiff competition from Steven Spielberg for ‘Lincoln‘ which had a most disappointing evening. While it got the most nominations – 12 it only won for Best Actor Daniel Day Lewis which was expected and also for production design.

That was the trend through the Oscar season where at previous awards shows like the Baftas ‘Lincoln‘ got the most nominations but only kept winning for Daniel Day Lewis. He is the first actor to win the Oscar three rimes for Best Actor In a Leading Role. Apart from ‘Lincoln‘ also faring poorly was ‘Silver Linings Playbook. It only got one Oscar for Best Actress Jennifer Lawrence despite hectic Oscar campaigning.

The independent film ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild‘ did not get anything. Kathryn Bigelow‘s ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘, the film about how the CI.A. hunted Osmama Bin Laden, luckily survived a similar fate when it tied for a sound award with Skyfall‘. Adele who sang the song for the Bond film also won. ‘Amour‘ like ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘, also had a disappointing showing with just one win for Best Foreign Film. The film‘s female lead Emmanuelle Riva was considered a hefty candidate for the Best Actress category.

Faring better was ‘Les Miserables‘ which had the second most wins behind ‘Life of Pi‘ – three including for supporting actress Anne Hathaway. "There are so many people whose support and generosity is the reason I‘m standing here right now," Hathaway said. Quentin Tarantino won for original Screenplay for ‘Django Unchained‘. He said that 2012 was the year of writers. The movie also picked up the award for Best Supporting Actor – Christoph Waltz. This was his second Oscar. His first win also came from a Tarantino film ‘Inglourious Basterds‘ a few years ago.

  • AFI to give lifetime achievement to MacLaine

AFI to give lifetime achievement to MacLaine

MUMBAI: Shirley MacLaine will be presented with the American Film Institute (AFI)‘s 40th Life Achievement Award (America‘s highest honour for a career in film) on 7 June. The elder actress will be recognized for her breadth of talents as an actress, songstress, author, director and producer.

Meryl Streep will do the honour. Incidentally, Streep, who was honoured with the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2004, played MacLaine‘s daughter in Postcards From The Edge (1990). Luminaries from across the film community will join Streep to celebrate the career of MacLaine, one of America‘s treasured motion picture artistes.

Said AFI president, CEO Bob Gazzale, "The world loves Shirley MacLaine. AFI‘s challenge will be how to fit it all into one evening because hers is a life that spans from movies to television to Broadway, books and beyond. Perhaps more than any other recipient, with Shirley I would underline the word life in Life Achievement Award. Her‘s is a story more than just movies. It‘s an epic journey, and she has invited all of us to come along for the ride."

Incidentally, both MacLaine and Streep have also won Oscar Awards. Streep was nominated a record 17 times, including for Postcards From The Edge, won her third Oscar this year for The Iron Lady. While MacLaine was nominated six times, she won the Oscar once for Terms Of Endearment (1983).

The show will air on US cable network TV Land on 24 June.

  • Zee Studio to bring red carpet coverage of Oscars

Zee Studio to bring red carpet coverage of Oscars

MUMBAI: While Star Movies will telecast The Oscar Awards live from 6 am on Monday, Zee Studio has also something special to offer for viewers interested in the event.

Zee Studio has tied up with US broadcaster E! to bring their show Live from the Red Carpet: The 2007 Academy Awards to Indian viewers. The coverage starts at 4:30 am. The Oscars themselves will conclude at around 10:30 am. This means that combined coverage on the two channels will last for six hours.

E! News anchor, Ryan Seacrest, and E! News co-host, Giuliana DePandi, will spearhead the star-studded presence on the red carpet from the site of the annual ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The pre show will look to capture the buzz.

There will be more interest this year than last year in India since Water directed by Deepa Mehta is competing in the foreign film category. The suspense is most in the best picture race. For the first time all five nominees Babel, The Departed, Letters From Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen all have a chance to win which is as it should be. Little Miss Sunshine which is the only feel good movie in the bunch seems to be a little ahead at the moment having won the directors guild, writers guild and actors guild awards.

Martin Scorcese should win best director for The Departed. However one cannot completely rule out two time winner Clint Eastwood. Eastwood has been nominated for Letters From Iwo Jima which tells the story of the second World War from the viewpoint of the Japanese soldiers. Around 21 per cent of Oscar voters are actors and would no doubt appreciate Eastwood making two great war movies in one year.

Helen Mirren should win best actress in The Queen which deals with the two week period following the death of Princess Diana in 1997. Best actor is a three way race betwen Forrest Whitaker who plays Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland, old time favourite Peter O Toole who falls for a young woman in Venus and Leonardo DiCaprio who plays a diamond mercenary in Blood Diamond.
