MUMBAI: After working for six years with DDB Mudra, the chief operating officer, Pratap Bose, is taking a summer holiday!

The news of him quitting the agency broke yesterday. However, not many were surprised with it as the reason of him putting down his papers was known. The group CEO and MD Madhukar Kamath has been given a four year extension at the agency and it is this reason why Bose resigned. Bose was expected to take over from Kamath, post his expected retirement.

Without indulging more on the subject Bose says, “It was a quick decision for me given the circumstances. But it has been glorious six years with the agency and I’m looking for the next chapter in my life and career.”

Bose has already been approached by other agencies, but he hasn’t taken any decision yet. “I might take a break for a while and then decide on the options.”

His last day in the agency is 11 April but will be available for handover or any work, if needed.

No one will be replacing him in the agency and people reporting to him will now be directly reporting to Kamath.

Prior to joining Mudra, Bose was with Ogilvy & Mather for 17 years; in 2006, he was named (youngest) CEO of the agency.

A chartered accountant by qualification, Bose has also worked across markets – national and international.

Last year, he was appointed as the president of the Ad Club and will continue to spearhead it.

  • Effie Awards: It’s a honey-bunny win for Lowe Lintas

Effie Awards: It’s a honey-bunny win for Lowe Lintas

MUMBAI: It was a night of many firsts for the Effie Awards, 2013. The Awards, organised by the Ad Club, that honours the advertising agencies and the clients just didn’t get the highest number of entries this time – which rose up to 415 from last year’s 315, it was also webcast live on the Advertising Club website while the award ceremony was in progress on Friday night.

Moreover, the year also witnessed the highest number of attendees at the event with more than 12,000 passes sold. Plus, two new categories – Effie for Good and Effie for Experiential Marketing – were added this year.

Lowe Lintas & Partners and Ogilvy & Mather that were leading the list of the shortlisted case studies with 51 and 31 shortlisted entries respectively, were in for a close competition at the award ceremony. While the former took home the Agency of the Year Award for the second time (earlier one being in 2006), the men in black – Ogilvy & Mather – bagged the Grand Effie to stand at the second position.

Lowe Lintas bagged 16 awards in total including six Gold to lead the chart with 160 points for clients including Idea (Honey Bunny, Telephone Exchange), Lifebuoy (Help a child reach five), Tanishq (Tanishq and Sridevi – Coming Back Home), Hindustan Unilever (Kissan 100 per cent natural seeded).

O&M also managed 130 points and three Gold Effies for clients including Vodafone (Made for you, Earmuffs) and Bournvita (Aadat).

Lowe Lintas’ chairman and chief creative officer R Balki along with his team couldn’t stop smiling after the grand victory. The agency that is not really known for participating in award shows looked delighted with its performance. “My team is happy and they are here to party,” says Balki as he remarks that he personally doesn’t believe in awards and it is his teams’ happiness and hard work that matters to him the most.

And though the men in black lagged behind with few points, their enthusiasm at the ceremony was infectious. The close competition with the rivals and the hunger to do better is what keeps the industry motivated year after year, thinks O&M’s executive chairman and creative director Piyush Pandey. “For a long time now, there hasn’t been a close fight and I wish Lowe Lintas the very best. It is their night tonight,” he says.

However, the third spot in the list of winners was taken by McCann Erikson that bagged one gold and 60 points. The Gold came in for Coca Cola (how Coca Cola won the battle for Indian teens).

And it was Hindustan Unilever (HUL) that was credited with the Client of the Year award. HUL executive editor, home and personal care was happy to have won the award, he says, “These awards are about industry recognition and effectiveness.”

The nip in the air didn’t bother the ad world much as they all came in to become a witness to the grand ceremony that was opened by MC Brian Tellis. Pratap Bose took the stage for the first time after official taking the charge of the Ad Club as the president and proclaimed that the country has some of the best advertisements/campaigns in the Asia Pacific. “The quality of our work is only improving with every coming year and we have only bettered our standards set last year,” Bose remarked in his opening speech.

However, this year, few categories didn’t see a Silver or Gold Effie being handed over. All India Bakchod’s Rohan Joshi didn’t take much time to take a pot shot at the situation by sharing a joke on Hussain Bolt coming third even when nobody claimed the second or first position!

But still the event ended on a “high” note with lots of fireworks to celebrate the victory as the attendees whispered that the Lintas’ win was well-deserved.

  • Curry-Nation reaches out to underprivileged kids

Curry-Nation reaches out to underprivileged kids

MUMBAI: Curry-Nation founder Priti Nair has been involved with various charity organizations and NGOs for nearly two decades now; one of them being Masoom, which is run by her cousin and works for night schools for the underprivileged.

For Masoom, Nair and team have created a couple of notable advertising campaigns; the most recent one involving the use of glow-in-the-dark technology.

As part of the campaign, posters, direct mailers including calendars and Diwali greeting cards, and three press ads were designed using radium ink which is visible only in the dark.

The posters were strategically placed at editing studios and production houses while calendars and greeting cards were sent out to potential patrons. The press ads featured historic events that happened during the day such as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Dandi March and the encounter between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan.

The posters, direct mailers and press ads were visible only in darkness, appearing blank in daylight; thus sending out the idea of a night school brilliantly.

Nair believes people in the advertising fraternity have enough to spare monetarily, both at an individual as well as collective level. “We often get a little laid back in our every day work lives. All we need is a little push. These posters act as reminders,” she says, stressing that charity needs to become a part of people’s life.

Curry-Nation’s previous campaign for Masoom – Bhagwaan tera bhala kare – was also well received.

Tiffin boxes painted by underprivileged children were sent out to each and every ad agency in Mumbai, urging staff to donate some amount every day. Once the dabba was full, it was up to every agency to decide the social cause the contribution would go toward. An official facebook page was launched at https://www.facebook.com/Bhagawanterabhalakarein where companies could place requests for tiffin boxes and posters for their offices.

“The response we got from people when we sent out the dabbas was overwhelming but obviously, we cannot monitor how well they are implementing it. At the very least, we hope that if someone doesn’t want loose change in his/her wallet, he/she will put it in the dabba!” Nair recalls.

More importantly, Nair and Co. have done most of these campaigns free-of-charge. “Most of our work is done for free, but there are a few NGOs which keep aside money for advertising. For them, we charge whatever they can afford,” says Nair.

Apart from Curry-Nation, other agencies too have taken similar initiatives. Nair gives the examples of ‘Balbir Pasha ko AIDS hoga kya?’ and ‘Bell Bajao’ as campaigns that made a difference. ‘Balbir Pasha…’ was part of PSI’s Operation Lighthouse Project, conceptualised by Lowe nearly a decade ago with her as creative director. Whereas ‘Bell Bajao’, launched in 2008 and conceptualised by Ogilvy & Mather, called upon men around the world to take a stand and promise to end violence against women.

Coming back to Curry-Nation, Nair is proud about the fact that the agency she launched right from scratch with just a five-member team will complete three years on the Valentine Day (14 February). To commemorate the occasion, she, along with her core team, plan to launch a book on their journey thus far. While she isn’t too happy with the rate at which they are growing, she says her happiness quotient has reached 100%.

“Because of the poor rate of economic growth, business has slowed down as people have become very conscious and have been cutting down on budgets. Hopefully, the situation will change for the better,” she signs off.

  • Center Fresh’s new ad film created by Soda Films

Center Fresh’s new ad film created by Soda Films

MUMBAI: Center Fresh will now be available in a different flavour. The refreshing chewing gum as an natural extension to the brand has launched the Paan flavour. The flagship brand of Perfetti Van Melle India roped in Ogilvy & Mather for the new campaign.

The Center Fresh Paan campaign devised by Soda Films reaffirms the base brand positioning, while announcing the arrival of the new flavour. Directed by Rajesh Krishnan and produced by Ameya Dahibavkar, the TVC translates into its tagline Zubaan Pe Rakhe Lagaam (Keeps your mouth shut).

Commenting on the launch, group product manager Chaitanya Shekar said, “Center Fresh and Paan have significant synergies, given their mouth-freshening properties and it was only a matter of time in getting this logical extension on the brand. We are extremely excited about this new launch and we believe this format will open up new avenues for consumption of Paan in a quick and fun way.”

Giving an insight into the TVC, Ogilvy & Mather national creative director Abhijit Avasthi said, “We have all come across the not-so-pretty sight of people stuffing Paan into their mouth and talking. Half of the time it’s not even clear what they are saying. But they go on, without caring whether the spit is staining their clothes or flying off from their mouth and landing on the other person’s face. We took this insight and crafted a funny ad that showed the consequences a dhobi’s son has to face due to his talking while chewing Paan.”

  • O&M makes Big B a crusader

    O&M makes Big B a crusader

MUMBAI: In a country where every year farmers commit suicide because of draughts, it is very important to educate and sensitise people about draught.

With an objective to propagate water conservation, Dhanuka Agritech has launched a new television commercial featuring Amitabh Bachchan.

The campaign has been conceptualised by Ogilvy & Mather and depicts the dependence of Indian populace on rains and the associated happiness and prosperity. The jingle “Baadal barse tapur tupur” aims to connect with the audience and showcase the joy and euphoria that rain brings with it. The TVC further portrays how an individual can bring about change by undertaking small initiatives like harvesting rain water.

Dhanuka Agritech group chairman RG Agarwal said, “Since decades, the DNA of Dhanuka Agritech has been to bring about progressive change in the lives of Indian farmers through dedicated knowledge-driven and development-related activities. The TVC is a further step in this direction urging every stakeholder to understand the importance of water conservation for a sustainable future. The ‘emotion’ is so forceful that everyone’s conscience will respond to this issue. The TVC is expected to catch on the breath of the nation.”

The company has a flagship save water campaign with a tagline “Khet ka pani khet mein aur gaon ka pani gaon mein”.
