    NYIFF: ‘Labour of Love’ wins best film; Nawazuddin & Kalki bag best actor awards

    NEW DELHI: Labour of Love written and directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta won awards for best film, best screenplay and best director award at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF).

     

    On the other hand, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui got the Best Actor award for Haraamkhor, whereas Kalki Koechlin won the Best Actress award for her performance in

     

    In Haraamkhor, which is directed by Shlok Sharma, Siddiqui plays a married teacher in love with his student, essayed by Shweta Tripathi. In Margarita, With a Straw,directed by Shonali Bose, Koechlin is seen as Laila, an outgoing wheelchair bound teenager with cerebral palsy who is absolutely determined to have a normal life despite her challenges.

     

    The week-long 15th annual festival ended earlier this month with the New York premiere of Dum Laga Ke Haisha, a Yash Raj production starring Ayushmann Khurrana and debutante Bhumi Pednekar, directed by Sharat Katariya.

     

    Set in the crumbling environs of Calcutta, the film Labour of Love tells the story of two ordinary lives suspended in the duress of a spiraling recession. They are married to a cycle of work and domesticroutine and long stretch of waiting in the silence of an empty house; they share each other’s solitude in pursuit of a distant dream that visits them briefly every morning.

     

    Vignesh and Ramesh received the Best Child Actor award for the Tamil film Kaakaa Muttai. Directed by Manikandan M, the film tells the story about how two slum boys are consumed by the desire to taste a pizza after the opening of a pizza parlour on their old playground. Realizing that one pizza costs more than their family’s monthly income, they begin to plot ways to earn more money – inadvertently beginning an adventure that will involve the entire city.

     

    Seek and Hide, a short film directed by Manoj K. Nitharwal starring Mohan Agashe, Seema Biswas, Shalva Kinja Wadekar, Suleman, Khushboo Upadhyay, and Shabnam Sukhdev, won the Best Short film award. 

     

    Daughters of Mother India directed by Vibha Bakshi won the Best Documentary award. The documentary is a filmmaker’s journey through the aftermath of the horrific rape and murder of a 23 year old medical intern in Delhi on 16 December, 2012. For weeks mass protests filled the streets of India and the country witnessed ‘gender consciousness’ and extraordinary solidarity by the ordinary citizens – like never before.

     

    Filmmakers like Vishal Bharadwaj, Hansal Mehta, Shonali Bose, Dev Benegal and actors including Koechlin, Agashe, Samrat Chakraborty and others walked the red carpet.

  • CFSI fails at the box office with Gattu

    MUMBAI: The Children‘s Film Society of India (CFSI) has failed to find box office success with its films yet again. The award-winning Gattu failed to win theatrical audiences, disappointing CFSI‘s commercial attempt made after a 16-year gap.

    The last film that CFSI released was Santosh Sivan‘s Halo in 1996.

    Gattu, directed by Rajan Khosa, is a film about a small child‘s passion to fulfill his dreams helps him get admission in a school. It won several awards including the ‘Best Film’ award at the 12th New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF).

    Gattu had good opportunity as all the Friday releases were weak and proved to be disasters at the box office. Stale and out of sync in its content and treatment, Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai proved to be a commercial dud.

    Challo Driver met with a similar fate, failing to find patrons as it lacked face value and enough promotion.

    Meanwhile, despite a limited exposure, as most screens were blocked by Bol Bachchan, Cocktail excelled to find appreciation from the youth. The film collected Rs 538 million and was holding steady in the second weekend as well.

    Bol Bachchan remained fair in its second week, mopping up Rs 216 million, to take its total net collections at the box office to Rs 821 million.

    Teri Meri Kahaani ran out of steam in its fourth week, while Gangs Of Wasseypur added Rs 6 million in its fourth week to take its total to Rs 264.5 million.

    Ferrari Ki Sawaari added Rs 5 million in its fifth week. Its total net collections so far stood at Rs 281.5 million.

    Rowdy Rathore collected Rs 5 million in its seventh week to take its tally to Rs 1.38 billion.

    Shiv Dube’s MLA nominated at NYIFF

    MUMBAI: Debutante Shiv Dube’s directorial venture MLA has won a nomination at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) where the film would be officially screened on 24 May.

    Starring Mukesh Tiwari and Onkar Das Manikpuri, the film tells the story of a battle between a common man, an industrialist and a politician.The film is an attempt to show the power of the common man. If a common man decides to change the fate of his country, then he can do that by electing and voting the right candidate for himself.

    Said Dube, “I was so occupied with the activities concerning the film’s release that I didn‘t even have time to react. I just took the news casually when I was informed about it initially. I took it as part and parcel of making a film. But now that it has actually sunk in, I obviously feel honoured and appreciated. Through MLA, my attempt is to show the real face of politics from the point of view of the layman and the corporate world. I also want to spread awareness about the importance of voting among the audience.”

    Produced by Gajali Films, MLA will release across theatres on 25 May.

    Rituparno Ghosh’s Chitrangada to premiere at NYIFF

    MUMBAI: The 12th annual New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) will premiere Rituparno Ghosh’s latest film ‘Chitrangada‘ at the 12th annual New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF), which will run from May 23 to 27 at Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan.

    The film has the director facing the camera in the role of a choreographer who plans to stage the dance drama Chitrangada on the occasion of Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary.

    The festival will close with Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘ that will have its World premiere in Directors’ Fortnight at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. The festival will open with Bedabrata Pain’s ‘Chittagong‘.

    Another highlight of the festival would be the screening of Oscar-winning documentary ‘Saving Face‘ from Pakistan.

    The festival, presented by the Indo-American Arts Council, will run from 23 to 27 May at Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan.
