India’s first sneaker & street festival is back!

Mumbai: Soledition, India’s first street & sneaker festival, makes a comeback for a spectacular second edition. Catering to the rising sneakerhead subculture, the festival will be organised at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi, on 24 and 25 February 2024.

The one-of-its-kind festival will bring together sneakerheads, skateboarders, basketball players, gamers, musicians, dancers, rappers, graffiti artists, and like-minded street and sneaker culture enthusiasts in one place.

Building on the success of the inaugural event, Soledition is gearing up to create an even more immersive experience, offering attendees a unique opportunity to delve into the vibrant tapestry of street and sneaker culture. The Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, a symbol of India’s sporting prowess, will transform into a heaven for sneaker enthusiasts and streetwear aficionados alike.

Speaking about the festival, Soledition the curator & founder Siddharth Pal said, ” Inspired from the b-boying and sporting trends of the early 70s and late 80s, the sneakerhead culture gradually took over the world. Over the years, sneakers have evolved to become more than just a comfortable footwear option. There is a deeper meaning associated with them. They reflect individuality, creativity, and have become a canvas for self-expression.”

Soledition will exhibit some of the world’s iconic sneaker brands and Indian labels, providing an opportunity for sneakerheads to explore and celebrate their shared love for fashionable kicks. It is an ideal space for shoe aficionados to buy sneakers and a platform for collectors to showcase their exquisite collections. For art enthusiasts, there is a DIY zone for sneaker customisation.

He added that “Soledition is an effort to collaborate with street and sneaker enthusiasts, where they showcase their shared love for the rising street and sneaker culture. It is a platform where like-minded people come together to exchange ideas and immerse themselves. The first edition of the street and sneaker festival was a huge success, so this time, we have returned with more elements and activities to engage the community. We expect enthusiastic participation this time as well.”

In the dynamic graffiti zone, individuals can engage in the innovative graffiti workshop and immerse themselves in the magnificence of some of the selected creations of renowned Indian graffiti artists.

Indian electronic music producer Nucleya and Victor Ruiz, a Brazilian-born artist who has made his mark as a talented DJ and techno music producer will perform at the festival.

There are activities curated for DJs, beatboxers, and freestylers to showcase their talent. Additionally, a special performance has been organized on both days of the festival to entertain the visitors.

  • ‘100 Pipers Vh1 Sound Nation’ to kick off on 2 May

‘100 Pipers Vh1 Sound Nation’ to kick off on 2 May

MUMBAI: Soaring mercury levels notwithstanding, audiences across the country are in for a first-of-its-kind, multi-genre music extravaganza put together by premier music channel Vh1 along with Seagram’s 100 Pipers.

Starting 2 May, ‘100 Pipers Vh1 Sound Nation’ will witness 28 of the biggest Indian artists and bands perform at 23 gigs across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Pune spread over 10 days.

Cult performers like Parikrama, Midival Punditz, Indus Creed and Nucleya will be part of the music entourage travelling across the country.

The event will culminate in an exciting awards night in Mumbai where Indian artistes will be recognized for their talent and contribution to music across 13 categories such as rock, electronic, pop, blues and hip-hop. Top honours will include best live performance, best new artist and best music video.

Says Viacom18 Media , SVP and GM, English Entertainment Ferzad Palia, “Vh1 is the most definitive platform for celebrating music talent in India and we are taking this a step ahead through 100 Pipers Vh1 Sound Nation. We are excited to partner with Seagram’s in recognizing and honoring local talent and bringing forth the multi-city music fest at a scale which is worth looking forward to,” before adding, “We could have done it last year, but we waited for a year to get more international traction and interest nationally.”

Palia substantiates saying that there were around 7,000 live events in India two years ago however this year, the number of live performances by independent artists has gone up to nearly 15,000. “Right now, in our country, there is no real platform to showcase talent under one roof. Given the recent rise of English language music artists in India, the cost of making music videos has become less expensive. We’ve had Vh1 India Rules for eight years now, which showcases the top cream of Indian talent and we plan to celebrate that talent with an award show. This year, we have two artists for each gig,” says Palia, pointing out that the event is planned as genre-agnostic.

Viacom believes that Vh1 Sound Nation is a definitive platform to have a stake in and gives no reason for cannibalization; instead, there would be an overdrive to create a different space for different music lovers. Like Vh1 had initiated Super Sonic and then, there was Contraband in association with Hard Rock Cafe and Universal Music.

An event organized on such a vast scale will obviously be supported by 360 degree marketing including on ground and online integrations. With six gigs being held simultaneously in six cities, Palia admits it’s going to be a “logistical nightmare”. He believes that an outdoor event of such proportions is bound to be logistics heavy. “This year, we are facing many revenue challenges though we are in touch with our international counterparts in Viacom. But we are facing a few hindrances in getting them here to join us for this event”, he says.

Viacom’s English entertainment channels, including music channels are treated as brands and not just channels. The four legs of the network include TV, live, digital and consumer products. As far as the last goes, the network has started with official South Park merchandise and will add to that based on popular demand.

Modeselektor gets Delhi on the dance floor at Lap The Club

MUMBAI: One of the hottest electronic acts across the globe, Berlin based Modeselektor, gave Delhi some serious music love as a part of their two city tour presented by Red Bull Music Academy.

Earlier in the day, the Red Bull Music Academy session brought under one roof about 50 independent artists, producers and members of the industry. The Indian indie scene was well represented by the likes of Jivraj Singh, an RBMA alumni and member of the newly formed Dualist Inquiry Band, Nucleya and Arsh Sharma from Fuzz Culture among others.

Modeselektor took the audience through their history, their experiences and the distinct brand of music that they alone can lay claim to.

Formed in 1996 by childhood friends Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary a.k.a Modeselektor described their own sound as ‘wildly diverse, infused with exuberance and inspired by a ‘slap of the absurd’.

In an informal chat, Modeselektor spoke about their genesis in the chaos of a newly united Germany, trans-genre by design and named after a function on an audio analog device.

Modeselektor has three acclaimed studio albums to their name, multiple compilations, EPs and remixes, apart from also working with acclaimed recording artists over the years including Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

Talking about their future plans they said, “We love being around people! And one idea that we want to bring to life is to create a camp, where musicians and aficionados, both adults and children, can come together and explore different genres of music.”

Later in the evening, the duo performed a high-energy DJ set to a raging crowd at The Lap! They spun some of their most popular numbers like “Evil Twin “and “German Clap” making sure everyone was on their feet!

Red Bull Music Academy is an international platform for those who shape the musical future around the globe. The Academy has brought legendary drummer Bernard Purdie, electronic music maverick Dorian Concept and producer Justin Blaze to India in the past.
