    Analysis: Top South Indian news channels in 2018

    BENGALURU: South Indians consumed more news  of the top 5 channels in their local languages than their Hindi speaking brethren of top 5 Hindi News channels  in their respective markets in 2018. Amongst the four south Indian languages spoken in six states, Malayalis’ (Denizens of Kerala, language Malayalam) consumed more news per household (HH) and per capita on the top 5 Malayama News channels than their South Indian brethren in 2018.  Overall, Kannadigas’ (People from Karnataka, language Kannada) consumed more volume of news in terms of average weekly impressions during the 52 weeks of 2018 on the top 5 Kannada News channels than the consumers of news on top 5 channels in the other three South Indian languages. The four South Indian languages are (in alphabetical order) Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.

    It may be noted that this analysis is based on Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly data of top 5 News channels for each of the four South Indian languages and Hindi News as per the following demographics:

    Kannada News: Karnataka  Urban and Rural or (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
    Malayalam News: Kerala (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
    Tamil News: Tamil Nadu/Puducherry (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
    Telugu News: Andhra Pradesh or AP/Telangana (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
    Hindi News in HSM Markets (U+R): NCCS All 15+ Individuals

    To arrive at the per capita viewership or consumption, the author has considered the 52 week average number divided by the respective population of the respective market as per BARC India, Households and Individuals Universe Estimate – 2018 (BARC Population Estimates 2018). BARC considers HSM or Hindi Speaking Market as All India without the four South Indian markets. Hence, the author has subtracted the NCCS 15+ population of the four South Indian markets from the All India NCCS 15+ population to arrive at the HSM 15+ population numbers. In the case of per capita consumption for South India, the author has taken the sum of average weekly impressions of the top 5 channels for each language and then added the four sums to arrive at the total average weekly impressions for South India, this total average has then been divided by the 2+ population figures for each of the four languages/six states as per BARC Population Estimates 2018.

    Overall, across their four languages South Indians averaged 2.32 impressions per person per week of news  on the top 5 News channels in their respective language and territories in 2018 as compared to just 0.99 impressions per person per week of Hindi news on the top 5 Hindi News channels consumed in the HSM (U+R).  The combined average weekly news consumption of the top 5 news channels in each of the four South Indian languages was 6,00,473.88 thousand (000s) weekly impressions in their respective markets as compared to 4,92,359.25 (000s) weekly impressions viewership of the top 5 Hindi News in the HSM (U+R) market.

    Across the 52 weeks of 2018, viewership ratings of South Indian News channels was different when compared to viewership of Hindi News Channels. Even within the four South Indian languages, viewership ratings across weeks trended differently. South Indian news viewership in the respective South Indian markets peaked during weeks 32 and 33 of 2018 . In week 32, floods in Kerala and the death of the Tamil leader K Karunanidhi on 8 August 2018 spiked viewership in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Like the HSM, Television news viewership peaked in week 33 in the South Indian markets also, and was relatively higher than HSM news viewership of top News channels in the respective markets.  Week 33 of 2018 was the week when Indians celebrated Independence day on 15 August and the former Indian premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away the next day of 16 August.     South Indian News channels Trends

    As mentioned above, per capita local television Malayalam news consumption in Kerala is the highest amongst the four languages, while in terms of absolute viewership Kannada News in Karnataka scores the most average weekly impressions. The figure below is a scaled part of the figure above.

    Kannada News channels in Karnataka

    There were four news channels that appeared in BARC’s list of top 5 Kannada News channels during all the 52 weeks of 2018 – they were TV9 Kannada, Public TV, Suvarna News 24×7 and News18 Kananda. TV9 Kannada was by far the most watched Kannada News channel in Karnataka with average weekly impressions of 78,059.65 (000s), about 64 percent more than the next most watched Kannada News channel in Karnataka – Public TV which scored an average of 47,622.5 (000s) weekly impressions during the 52 weeks of 2018. Suvarna News 24×7 was next with an average of 30,951.44 (000s) weekly impressions followed by News18 Kannada with a weekly average of 21,724.06 (000s) weekly impressions during the 52 weeks of 2018. Two other channels appeared in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Kannada News channels during the 52 weeks of 2018 – they were Dighvijay 24×7 News (45 weeks) and BTV (7 weeks).     As is obvious, Kannada News channels viewership in Karnataka peaked during the announcement of the drama laced results of the Karnataka State Assembly Elections in week 20 of 2018.

    Malayalam News channels in Kerala

    There were three Malayalam News channels that appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top 5 Malayalam News channels during all the 52 weeks of 2018 – they were – Asianet News, Manorama News and Mathrubhumi News. Asianet News was by far the most watched Malayalam News channel in Kerala during all the 52 weeks of 2018 with average weekly ratings of 44,453 (000s) weekly impressions. Manorana News was next with an average of 23,157.13 (000s) weekly impressions, or about 52 percent of the ratings of Asianet News. Mathrubhumi News was next with average weekly impressions of 18,168.36 (000s) weekly impressions. Four other channels also appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top 5 Malayalam News channels during the 52 weeks of 2108 – In no particular order, they were – News18 Kerala (43 weeks), Media One TV (42 weeks), Janam TV (12 weeks) and People TV (7 weeks).

    As in the case of Kannada News, Malayalam News viewership in Kerala also peaked in the face of local events – on 8 August 2018 ( during week 32 of 2018) Kerala was hit by some of the worst floods in its history due to excessive rainfall. In its neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, one of India’s senior most politicians – K Karunanidi had passed away the previous day.  These events led to the surge in Malayalam News television ratings during the week.     Tami News channels in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

    Two channels appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top 5 Tamil channels during all the 52 weeks of 2018. They were Poliimer News with average weekly impressions of 42,361.37 (000s) followed by Thanthi TV with 24,498.6 (000s) average weekly impressions during the 52 weeks of 2018.

    Four other channels – Puthiya Thalaimurai (50 weeks), Sun News (41 weeks), News18 Tamil Nadu (27 weeks) and Seithigal (1 week) also appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of Top 5 Tamil News channels during the 52 weeks of 2018.

    Like its Kannada and Malayalam news counterparts, Tamil News ratings peaked in Tamil Nadu/Puducherry in week 32 of 2018. On 7 August 2018 (week 32 of 2018) one of India’s senior most politicians and a former chief minister of the state – K Karunanidi had passed away. Also, floods in the neighbouring state of Kerala could have added to the viewership during week 32 of 2018. Please refer to the figure below.

    Telugu News channels in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

    Like all the other South Indian counterparts, Telugu News channels viewership in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana spiked upwards for local events – the biggest spike coming in week 50 of 2018, the week in which results of the assembly elections in Telangana were announced.

    Four channels appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top 5 Telugu News channels during all the 52 weeks of 2018. They were: TV9 Telugu with average weekly impressions of 49,830.42 (000s) followed by NTV Teleugu with an average of  36,230.21 (000s) weekly impressions or about 72.7 percent of the viewership of TV9 Telugu. TV5 News was next with average 30,915.17 (000s) weekly impressions followed closely by V6 News with an average of 29,752.38 (000s) weekly impressions during the 52 weeks of 2018.  Four other Telugu News channels also appeared in BARC’s weekly list of Top 5 Telugu News channels during 2018. They were  T News (24 weeks), Sakshi TV (16 weeks), 10 TV (8 weeks) and ABN Andhra Jyothi (4 weeks). Please refer to the figure below.

    Conclusions

    South Indians watch more local news on the top 5 channels of their respective languages than their Hindi speaking counterparts do in the case of Top 5 Hindi News channels in Hindi speaking markets.

    Per capita local news consumption of top 5 News channels in Kerala is highest among the four South Indian languages. Overall, in terms of impressions, more Kannada news on the top 5 News channels in Karnataka is consumed than any of the other three South Indian languages.

    Viewership of South Indian languages news channels spikes when local events occur. The highest spikes in viewership of the Top 5 News channels in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh/Telagana happened in the weeks when state assembly elections were announced in their respective markets. The highest spikes in viewership of Malayalam News and Tamil News channels happened during a calamity and death of a great political leader respectively.

    Viewership in respective markets of South Indian News channels also spikes in the case of a national event – such as Independence Day celebrations and the death of a national figure such as the former prime minister happen.

    Most watched South Indian channels in 2018

    BENGALURU: The South Indian television market comprises of the states and union territories in which the four prominent South Indian languages (by alphabetical order): Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu are spoken. Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) Universe defines these territories as: Kannada – Karnataka state; Malayalam – Kerala state; Tamil – Tamil Nadu (TN) state and the Union Territory of Puducherry; and Telugu – the states of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana. These states and territories will be referred to as the South Indian states henceforth in this article.

    BARC says that its data is based on the following viewer geographies and demographic parameters for GEC/News in Hindi, Channels other than News channels and News channels in the four South Indian languages:

    (a)   Hindi GEC/News: Hindi Speaking Markets, both urban and rural or HSM (U+R): NCCS All: 15+ Individuals.
    (b)   Telugu Channels other than News/ News: Andhra Pradesh or AP/Telangana (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
    (c)   Kannada Channels other than News /News: Karnataka (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
    (d)   Tamil Channels other than News /News: Tamil Nadu/Puducherry (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
    (e)   Malayalam Channels other than News /News: Kerala (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

    BARC India Universe Estimate Grid 2018 was adopted from week 29 of 2018 onward. Before that BARC India, Households and Individuals Universe Estimate – 2017 was used. Until (including) week 28 of 2018, BARC’s Universe 2017 estimates have been used and from week 29 to 2018 onward, BARC Universe 2018 estimates have been used in this paper to determine viewership per HH.

    It must be noted that according to BARC sources, the urban and rural Hindi Speaking Market (HSM) comprises All of India minus the states that have the four South Indian languages. The unit of viewership measure or ratings in all cases in the charts below is thousand weekly impressions.

    Television penetration in these five states Southern States and Union Territories is highest with more than 91 percent of the households having a television set. According to the BARC India Universe Estimate Grid 2018, the South Indian states account for more than a third (34.76 percent) or 68.374 million of the total 196.730 million television HHs in the country. The five South Indian states and one Union Territory constitute 30.93 percent (258.509 million) of total population of ages two years or more (2+, 835.839 million) according to the latest BARC India Universe Estimate Grid. 

    There are a number of channels in each of the four South Indian languages covering genres such as GEC, movies, infotainment, kids, etc. BARC India makes available in public data of the top 5 or 10 channels other than news channels and the top 5 news channels in each of these South Indian languages along with data for other genres/languages for each language every week. The conclusions drawn by the author in this paper are hence limited to the data that is disseminated by BARC India in the public domain. Just to give a flavour of the importance of the South Indian markets for broadcasters and marketers, a comparison of the gross viewership ratings of the top 5 channels for all the first 33 of 2018 (Saturday, 30 December 2017 to Friday, 17 August 2018) of each of the four South Indian languages and Hindi GECs’ in HSM (U+R) is indicated below. 

    In the public domain, BARC India provides data for the top 10 Hindi GEC channels in HSM (U+R), HSM (U) and HSM (R). The author has used ratings data of only the top 5 Hindi GEC channels in HSM (U+R) in the comparative figure below.

    South Indians consume more news in their respective local languages and markets than the Hindi speaking viewer does Hindi news in HSM. In South India, more Kannada news per HH in Karnataka is consumed than in the case of other South Indian language in its respective state and territory HH. Please refer to the figure below for the Gross Combined Impressions of the Top 5 News channels of weeks 1 to 33 of 2018 in Hindi and the four South Indian languages.

    After this short preamble, let us move to the status quo in South India. To belong to the top South Indian channels other than news channels and the top South Indian news channels list and for ranking in this paper the following filtering criteria have been used (2) The channel must have appeared in BARC’s list of top 5 channels in the respective language and state or territory for all the first thirty three weeks of 2018, (2) combined weekly ratings of the eligible channels across all the 33 weeks of 2018 are used to determine the ranking.

    Two ranking systems have been used in this paper – one is on the basis of gross viewership during the first 33 weeks of 2018 and the other is by gross viewership during the first 33 weeks of 2018 per household in the respective state and territory. As mentioned above gross viewership per household has been determined by using BARC Universe 2017 estimates for weeks 1 to 28 and BARC Universe Estimates 2018 have been used week 29 onward. 

    Top South Indian TV channels other than news channels in weeks 1 to 33 of 2018

    Sun TV, the flagship Tamil general entertainment channel (GEC) of one of the most profitable media companies in India- The Sun TN Network Ltd, is one of the most watched channels in India as is evident from its week on week number one position in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 channels across genres. Sun TV accedes its first rank annually during the weeks around when the Indian Premier League (IPL) is being played to the channel that airs the event in Hindi. Until IPL 2018, the cricket league was aired on Sony Pictures Network India’s Hindi movies channel Sony Max. Since 2018, the right to air the event was won by Star India, and its Hindi sports channel Star Sports 1 Hindi occupied premier rank in most weeks that the event took place in BARC’s weekly lists of Top 10 channels across genres. 

    The top fifteen South Indian channels other than news in the list below are those that have appeared in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 channels in their respective South Indian languages during all the first 33 weeks of 2018. Thirteen of the channels are GEC and two are movies channels – one movies channel in Kannada and one in Tamil. The Sun TV Network has channels among BARC’s top 5 weekly lists in all the four South Indian Languages. Six of the top 18 channels in the list below are from the Sun TV Network (four local language GECs and both the movies channels among the fifteen), three each are from Star India and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel), two are associated with Viacom18 and one is owned by Insight Media City. 

    Four channels have the same ranks based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership and 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH (rank 1 Sun TV-Tamil; rank 13 Udaya Movies-Kannada; rank 14, Surya TV- Malayalam and rank 15 Flowers TV-Malayalam). Noteworthy is the fact that the second most watched channel in terms of 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH – Asianet (Malayalam) is ranked tenth based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership. Colors Kannada is ranked third based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH as compared to rank 10 based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership; Star India’s Telugu Flagship channel Star Maa is ranked fourth in terms of 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH and second in terms of 33 Weeks Gross Viewership alone. Zee Telugu is ranked fifth in terms of 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH as compared to third rank based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership.     Top South Indian Television News channels in weeks 1 to 33 of 2018

    There are a number of news channels in each of the four South Indian languages. TV9 Kannada is the most watched news channel in Karnataka and has the highest 33 Week Gross Viewership as well as 33 Week Gross Viewership per HH in South India amongst the local news channels in their respective states and territories. Thirteen news channels from South India appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top 5 news channels in their respective languages in their states and territories during all the 33 weeks of 2018. There are four Kannada and Telugu news channels each, three Malayalam news channels and two Tamil news channels that are listed below. 

    As in the case of South Indian channels other than news above, for South Indian news channels also there is variance in ranks when viewed from 33 Weeks Gross Viewership and 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH perspectives. None of the News channels except for TV9 Kannada (rank 1) have the same ranks for 33 Weeks Gross Viewership and 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH. Based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership, Public TV (Kannada) is the second most watched South Indian news channel, but from the perspective of 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH, Public TV is ranked third. Similarly, TV9 Telugu is ranked third based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership, but is ranked fifth based on Gross Viewership per HH. The Malayalam news channel Aisanet is ranked fourth based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership, but ranked second based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH, while the Tamil language news channel Polimer News is ranked fifth based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership, but is ranked eighth based on 33 Weeks Gross Viewership per HH. Malayalam channel Manorama News is ranked is ranked eleventh based on 33 Week Gross Viewership, but is ranked fourth based on 33 Week Gross Viewership per HH.     Hindi news channels continue strong run in 2018

    BENGALURU:The combined total viewership of the top-five Hindi news channels shows that it has a huge audience when compared to the combined total viewership of the top-five news channels of each of the four South Indian languages individually. However, when audiences of the top-five news channels of the four South Indian languages are combined, their 15-week average viewership exceeds the 15-week average ofthe combined total of the top-five Hindi news channels’ viewership by about 13 percent. Though the audience demographics of Hindi and the four South Indian languages are different (13 years difference), they have been compared in the chart. English news has not been mentioned in the first graph because (1) of the wide variance in the audience demographics between the South Indian language news and Indian English news which is 20 years (2) the viewership of Indian English news is too small to be comparable.

    This report is about Indian news channels—including Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and English—for which limited ratings data is available in the public domain. Business news channels or news channels in other languages have not been included in this report. The ratings data considered has limitations–it has been sourced from Broadcast Audience Research Council of India’s (BARC) weekly lists of the top-five news channels in each language.

    The first fifteen weeks of 2018 is the period starting Saturday, 30 December 2018 to Friday, 13 April 2018, the last week for which BARC data was available at the time of writing of this report.

    BARC says that its data is based on the following viewer geographies and demographic parameters for news in Hindi, the four South Indian languages and English:

    (a)     Hindi news: Hindi-speaking markets, both urban and rural or HSM (U+R): NCCS All: 15+ Individuals.

    (b)     Telugu news: Andhra Pradesh or AP/Telangana (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

    (c)     Kannada news: Karnataka (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

    (d)     Tamil news: Tamil Nadu/Puducherry (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

    (e)     Malayalam news: Kerala (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals

    (f)      English news: All India (U+R): NCCS AB: Males 22+ Individuals.

    The unit of viewership measure in all cases in the charts below is thousand weekly impressions.

    The overall status

    Let us see how the top-five channels of five languages–Hindi and the four South Indian languages–have performed. Please refer to the chart below.

    News viewership is event driven. The biggest event that occurred during the first 15 weeks of 2018 was the discussions and debates just before, during and after the elections results announcement of some Indian states in week 9 of 2018–ratings of all the channels peaked as is obvious from the figure. The only exception was Kannada news, the genre’s peak was in week 8 of 2018 based on the combined viewership of the top-five Kannada news channels.

    The combined viewership of the top-five Hindi news channels in week 9 was a staggering 931.068 million impressions–almost at par with the most-watched channel across genre in the country–Sun Network’s flagship Tamil GEC Sun TV. The lowest combined viewership of the top-five Hindi news channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018 was in week 15–just 393.013 million impressions–this was the week that the eleventh season of the cricket Indian Premier League or IPL 11 commenced and was aired on a number of Star India network channels. The importance of the IPL on viewership and cannot be understated and must be underscored. In the very first week of the tourney, one of the many Star India Network channels that aired the event—Star Sports 1 Hindi, catapulted into BARC’s top 10 channels across genre weekly list to second place with 935.856 million impressions—more than the peak combined impressions of the top-five Hindi news channels in week 9 of 2018. Before IPL 11 in week 15 of 2018, Star Sports 1 Hindi had never made it to BARC’s list of top-10 channels across genres in 2018!

    After Hindi news channels, Telugu news channels had the next largest audience during the first 15 weeks of 2018 going by the combined weekly totals of the top-five Telugu news channels. On a similar basis, at third place in terms of audience size was Kannada News, followed by Tamil news at fourth rank and Malayalam news at fifth place.

    Only three channels consistently appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top-five Hindi News channels in HSM (U+R) during the first 15 weeks of 2018. In order of viewership, they wereAajTak, Zee News and India TV.

    Three more Hindi news channels made appearances in BARC’s weekly lists of top-five Hindi News channels during the first fifteen weeks of 2018. They were News 18 India (present in the lists for 14 of the first 15 weeks of 2018); ABP News (present in the lists for 11 of the first 15 weeks of 2018); and News Nation (present in the lists for 5 of the first 15 weeks of 2018).  As is obvious from the figure below, all the top 3 channels reported a drop in ratings in week 15 as compared to week 14 of 2018.     Top Telugu news channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018

    Four channels consistently made it to BARC’s weekly lists of top-five Telugu News channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018. They were TV9 Telugu; NTV Telugu; V6 News; and TV 5 News. The other three Telugu channels that made it to the lists include 10 TV (present in the lists for 8 of first 15 weeks of 2018); ABN Andhra Jyothi (present in the lists for 4 of the first 15 weeks of 2018); and T News (present in the lists for 3 of the first 15 weeks of 2018).

    Please refer to the figure below. As is obvious, TV9 Telugu was in general the top Telugu News channel, but, for a few weeks, it had been overtaken by the second ranked NTV Telugu, which itself was overtaken by V6 News to second place for one week—week 13 of 2018.

    Top Kannada news channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018

    In the case of Kannada News channels, four channels were consistently present in BARC’s list of top-five Kannada News channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018. They were TV9 Kannada, Public TV, Suvarana News 24X7 and News18 Kannada. From the figure below, it is quite obvious that the demarcations in the ranks are simple. TV9 Kannada was consistently the most viewed Kannada News channel, followed by Public TV. It was only for one week (week 14) during the first 15 weeks of 2018 that there was a small blip when News18 Kannada replaced Suvarna News 24X7 at third place.

    Two more news channels made it to BARC’s weekly lists of Top-five Kannada News channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018. In order of the viewership size they attracted when they were present in BARC list, they were BTV News (present BARC’s weekly lists for 7 of the 15 weeks) and Dighvijay 24×7 News (present in BARC’s weekly lists for 8 of the 15 weeks).  The former drew more eyeballs during the seven weeks it was present in BARC’s list than the latter did during the 8 weeks that it was present in BARC’s lists.

    Top Tamil news channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018

    Four channels were consistently present in BARC’s list of top-five Tamil News channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018. In order of ranking they were: Polimer News, Puthiya Thalaimurai, Thanti TV and News 7 Tamil.  Clearly, Polimer News was the most watched Tamil News channel during the first 15 weeks of 2018. Puthiya Thalaimurai was ranked second for 9 of the first 15 weeks of 2018, and was ranked third for 6 of the weeks of 2018. Thanti TV was ranked second for 6 of first 15 weeks and ranked third for 9 of the first 15 weeks of 2018, while News 7 Tamil was ranked fourth consistently during the first 15 weeks of 2018.

    Three more channels made it BARC’s list of top-five Tamil News channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018. They were Sun TV (present in BARC’s weekly lists for 11 of the 15 weeks); News 18 Tamil Badu (present in BARC’s weekly lists for 3 of the 11 weeks); while Seithigal made its lone appearance in week 13 of 2018 in BARC’s weekly lists of top-five Tamil news channels during the period under review.

    Top Malayalam news channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018

    Three channels made it consistently to BARC’s weekly lists of top-five Malayalam News channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018. They were Asianet News, Manorama News and Mathrubhumi News. The rank demarcations were quite clear.Asianet News was the leader of the genre by far during the period under review.

    Four other news channels made it to BARC’s weekly lists of top-five Malayalam News channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018–they were News 18 Kerala (present in BARC’s weekly lists for 12 of the 15 weeks); Media One TV (also present in BARC’s weekly lists for 12 of the 15 weeks, but with lower viewership than News 18 Kerala when present in the lists); People TV (present in BARC’s weekly lists for 5 of the 15 weeks) and Janam TV which made its single appearance in week 3 of 2018.

    Top Indian English news channels during the first 15 weeks of 2018

    The Indian English news channel genre is niche and special. Generally, five channels made it consistentlyto BARC’s weekly lists of top-five English News channels. However, the Times group’s civic issues focused News channel Mirror Now (the erstwhile MagicBricks Now that was earlier focused on real estate news and information) has grabbed viewers interest and was present in BARC’s lists of top-five English News channels twice during the first 15 weeks of 2018. Mirror Now made it to BARC’s weekly lists of top-fiveEnglish News channels in weeks 6 and 9 of 2018 during the first 15 weeks of 2018. In the past (before 2018) a few other English News channels including international news channels such as BBC World and Indian News channels such as NewsX and Wion have made it to BARC’s weekly lists of top-five English news channels.

    Coming back to the present, the four channels which were consistently present in BARC’s lists of top-five English News channels were: Republic TV, Times Now, India Today Television, and CNN News18 during the first 15 weeks of 2018. The other regular to the lists has been the Prannoy and Radhika Roy led NDTV 24×7 which was present in BARC’s weekly lists of top-five News channels for 13 of the first 15 weeks of 2018.

    The rank demarcations in terms of viewership of the English News genre were quite clear during the first 15 weeks of 2018–the Arnab Goswami led Republic TV has been the pack leader right from the week Republic TV was launched–week 19 of 2017. However, viewership of the earlier numerouno and Goswami’s former employer, Times Now, has almost equalled Republc TV’s ratings twice in 2018–in weeks 8 and 12. Please refer to the figure below:
