  • Nick celebrates ‘helper kids,’ launches Halo

MUMBAI: As part of Nickelodeon’s commitment to recognize real kids who are making a difference in the world, the network is launching the Nickelodeon Halo Movement, a new year-round pro-social initiative celebrating kids who are helping and leading others (Halo).

Nickelodeon, an entertainment brand for kids, includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, digital, recreation, books and feature films.

Beginning this month, Nickelodeon is teaming up with longstanding volunteer partners Key Club and DoSomething.org to mobilize kids to participate in service projects, for the opportunity to receive seed grants or scholarship funds for school. WeHALO.com provides information on how to participate in the Nickelodeon Halo Movement and apply for Halo grants through Key Club and DoSomething.org.

As part of the Nickelodeon Halo Movement, Key Club, a student-led volunteer organisation sponsored by Kiwanis International, will provide its members with opportunities to participate in service projects that can be submitted for a chance to receive seed grants to further support their cause. DoSomething.org, the largest tech platform for young people and social change, will select monthly scholarship winners who participate in and complete their campaigns.

On WeHALO.com, the digital hub for the Nickelodeon Halo Movement, users can submit videos, photos or notes showing how they are helping and leading others, for the opportunity to be featured on the site. WeHALO.com also provides tips and information on ways to get involved in the community and allows users to share their halo moments using #WeHALO.

The Nickelodeon Halo Movement builds on the Halo Awards, an annual concert event honoring young community leaders, and The Halo Effect, the 2016 docu-series that gave viewers an in-depth look into the inspirational stories of teens who are eager to share the issues important to them.

  • Netflix’s Nick Nelson joins Ownzones Media as head of product innovation

MUMBAI: In a move to bolster its in-house product and innovation development, Ownzones Media Network, the OTT EntTech company, has appointed former Netflix executive Nick Nelson as the new Head of Product Innovation. Nelson, who will be based in Los Angeles, reports to Aaron Sloman, Chief Technology Officer at Ownzones.

In making the announcement, Sloman stated, “We are thrilled that Nick has joined us to further develop and refine our consumer OTT interface and user experience. He’s highly regarded in the industry for his knowledge to build and rollout brilliant OTT and streaming offerings, most notably in the early days of Netflix and recently with Seeso. I look forward to working closely with him on the innovation and strategy around our company’s products.”

In this newly created post at Ownzones, Nelson will oversee the innovation of Ownzones’s suite of products and services, and helping to develop novel concepts that furthers Ownzones’s pursuit of connecting people with the content they love. He will also help evolve the consumer facing discover experience, A/B testing framework and product data intelligence.

Nelson brings a wealth of valuable experience having served as Head of Product Creative at Netflix from 2012 to 2016. During the evolutionary years of the streaming giant, Nelson grew his Netflix team from 5 to 50+ employees to support the increasing responsibilities, volume, and international expansion of the company. Nelson was also responsible for transforming the Creative Services department at Netflix from a process-driven acquisition operation to a highly strategic, cross-functional team focused on improving creative while simultaneously operating at a global scale.

Most recently, Nelson served as the Owner of Technically Creative, a company he founded in October 2016 in Los Angeles. For the past year, he consulted with Seeso, the OTT subscription streaming service owned by Comcast through NBC Universal.

Nelson is a graduate of University of California – Santa Cruz, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems and Technology Management.

  • Effective story-telling in India is yet to evolve, says Viacom18 SVP Anu Sikka

MUMBAI: The animation services market in 2016 mostly continued to be dominated by outsourced projects from television and film sectors, which accounted for around 85 per cent of the total animation services turnover in India. However, there are a few exceptions such as Nick, which has been the leader in the genre for years according to audience measurement data.

`Motu Patlu’ films on Nick, which is part of the Viacom18 family, have been ruling the roost mostly in the top-five list. `Motu Patlu 36 Ghantey Race Against Time’, `HFF-Motu Patlu In Double Trouble’ and ‘Motu Patlu Kung Fu Kings’ have all been leading in the kids’ genre. The broadcaster along with Viacom18’s movies division also introduced the first 3D theatrical of Motu Patlu i.e. Motu Patlu King of Kings, that was a success.

“We have always conceptualised our own content allowing us to develop our own IPs. The quality, uniqueness and strength of our concepts and stories have ensured that our content remains relevant and sticky, establishing a strong connect with our young viewers, Viacom18 head, programming & content – kids entertainment cluster Anu Sikka told indiantelevision.com.

While dwelling on programming strategy for Nick, she added: “With our strategy, we have managed to drive the trend and take on the leadership mantle in the highly under-indexed kids category.”

Adventure and mystery show `Gattu Battu’, which is the fourth made in India character from Nickelodeon, has been running successfully after an encouraging opening on 1 May, 2017. `Pakdam Pakdai’, `Motu Patlu’, `Shiva’ and `Gattu Battu’ are shows that cater to the discerning entertainment needs of the young viewers.

“We aim at creating differentiated kids content for the age-group between 2 and 14 years, investing significantly in television movies such as `Motu Patlu’ and `Pakdam Pakdai’,” Sikka informed.

Apart from boasting of one of the most popular shows in the kids’ category, `Motu Patlu’, which is produced for Viacom18 by its partner Cosmos-Maya, the company also holds a record of having a large homegrown, made in India content bank within a short duration. `Motu Patlu’ followed by Pakdam Pakdai and then `Shiva’, which launched during Diwali last year, has created a new success yardstick for animation content in the Indian market, Viacom18 claimed.

The Indian animation and VFX industry grew at 16.4 per cent in 2016 to reach a size of INR 60 billion, driven primarily by a 31 per cent growth in VFX, with animation remaining steady at a growth rate of nine percent, as per the KPMG-FICCI Report 2017.

Dwelling on the investments Viacom18 generally makes for producing an animation show for kids, Sikka said that it could range between Rs 5 million and Rs 20 million, depending on various factors such as the intricacy and complexity of the animation, graphics and the script. “We have focused on creation of IPs allowing us to extend our characters to beyond television into other categories such as consumer products and movies etc., allowing us to create an entire ecosystem and facilitate monetisation,” Sikka said.

The uptake of domestic / Indian content may be a key growth driver for the animation industry, and the expected uptake of digital consumption through OTT platforms will add to the increasing demand for localized content. The animation IPR production segment, in 2016, grew at a faster rate owing to increasing demand for localised animation content and characters developed for the Indian market across OTT and TV.

According to Sikka, the ratio of local to foreign content was between 50 and 60 per cent in favour of Indian content.

“We are the pioneers in owning the intellectual property rights (IPRs) by producing our own shows with the intent of building an ecosystem and in the process, started a trend,” Sikka said. Once Viacom18 has the IPRs in place, it commissions different production houses to execute the projects, preferring to buy out entire rights than get into joint productions.

The Indian animation and VFX industry is estimated to expand at a CAGR of 17.2 per cent over 2017–21 to reach a size of Rs 131.7 billion, driven by a steady 9.5 per cent growth in animation and a 25 per cent growth in the VFX segment. Although animation in India has come a long way as compared to the situation 10 years ago, Sikka was of the opinion that the audience would lap up stories if those were well told, and that’s why Viacom18 prefers curating its own concepts and owning the IPRs too. “Occasionally, we hear out concepts and stories when some production houses approach us, but there are very few that strike a chord,” she added.

  • Nick to double ad rates for Kids Choice Awards

Nick to double ad rates for Kids Choice Awards

MUMBAI: Kids Choice Awards is back to draw Indian kids in a ‘slime’ fest! Viacom18’s flagship property that debuted in India in 2013 is being brought back by Nickelodeon, to celebrate those who entertained the kids the most.

Typically the awards in the media and entertainment world are tailor-made for adults, in terms of content as well as the personalities who adorn it. Being a leader in the genre, Nick decided to tailor-make an award show for kids that truly values their opinion.

With a total of 13 categories to vote for, some of the key awards categories include Best Movie Actor (Male and Female), Best Bollywood Movie, Best Television Show and Best Indian Cartoon Character. After two weeks of online voting through the Nickelodeon website, kids have chosen their favourite, that will be revealed in the gala event  on 5 December 2016 at Reliance Studios, Film City, Mumbai.

“Now that the voting has ended, we will count the votes and a special team of auditors will monitor it, following which we will make the final winner announcements at the ground event,” Viacom18 business head kids cluster Nina Elavia Jaipuria shared as the countdown for the awards began.

A televised version will also go on air — first on Nickelodeon around Christmas next month — followed by other sister channels under Viacom18 to expand its visibility. “We will air KCA on Colors, Rishtey, Colors Marathi, Colors Gujarati, Colors Bangla and, of course, on VOOT as well. We envision Kids Choice Awards as an inclusive show for the whole family and, therefore, having it on GECs will optimise it as a larger property with a greater reach.”

That definitely spells well with the channel’s advertisers, who, according to Jaipuria, find the property very promising. “When we started KCA in 2013, we weren’t in the leadership position. This year, we are in the lead, having topped the genre for the 57th week since BARC started releasing its data. Naturally, our advertisers and sponsors are also a lot more confident in the property,” Jaipuria shared.

Dabur Red Paste has come on board as the presenting sponsor for the kids show, along with Lifebuoy and Choki Choki by Inbisco India, and Funskool (MRF Group) as the associate sponsor.

“Further strengthening our resolve to improve oral health in the country and to reach out to

more kids, Dabur Red Paste has joined hands with Nickelodeon and KCA to further spread the message about dental hygiene and educate children about best oral care practices through a focussed and specially crafted campaign,” said Dabur India marketing head – oral care Harkawal Singh, on the brand’s association with Kids Choice Awards.

Given the excitement surrounding the second edition of KCA in India, Jaipuria is expecting the spot rates for KCA to be double than that of the channel’s normal rates. “KCA is an expensive property for us. We are doing ti because we strongly believe that we are the leaders in kids entertainment in the country. We are putting our money where  our mouth is, and we deserve to get it monetised,” Jaipuria said.

Jaipuria observed that kids also enjoy a lot of content mostly aimed at adults, be it movies, or TV shows with fantasy in it. Does that fragment the viewership of kids genre and in turn impact advertising? “While fragmentation of viewers is there, as kids also watch GECs and movie channels, they ultimately are loyal to content tailor-made for them. They might be watching GECs but they are a passive audience there, and hence brands that are truly interested to communicate to kids must come to kids channels. The fact that our ad sales pie is growing at a 11–12 per cent and we are estimated to close the year at Rs 500 crore speaks volumes. Nick grown our top line ad rates by 30 per cent y-o-y since last October; and that of Sonic by about 50 per cent, ” she added.

In order to build momentum up to the awards, the channel has been promoting the property heavily across its channels in the kids cluster.

“Apart from tying to the festive mood of Christmas, airing the show sometime mid-December also gives us enough time to promote it. The initial phase of it was the announcement of the show and calling in the voters in October, and it will end with a bang in December,”Jaipuria said, adding that the network has aired around 3000-odd promos of KCA in the past few weeks.

Apart from on-air promotions, the network plans to engage the kids on ground with several partnerships, including McDonalds. Van activation across 30 cities will target tier II and tier III audience, and print advertising is also part of the marketing mix.
