Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018: NewsX-CNX Exit Poll Survey Accurate

MUMBAI: The NewsX-CNX Exit Poll for Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018 delivered the most credible survey results for the much-anticipated assembly elections in the state. On the polling day, NewsX-CNX projections indicated that BJP had strong chances to dethrone the ruling Congress party in the state assembly elections.

With BJP failing to reach the magic number of 112, focus has currently shifted to the Raj Bhawan as JD(S), supported by the Congress, informed Governor Vajubhai Vala about their willingness to stake claim to form a coalition government. BJP too is expected to stake claim to form the government in Karnataka.

Congress and BJP were main contenders for power in these elections, with former prime minister H D Deve Gowda’s JDS positioned to play a decisive role in the formation of the government. The final dash was still on at the time of release of this press note (7.00 p.m. IST).

As projected in the survey, BJP grabbed a total of 104 of 222 seats, with the Congress managing 78, followed by JDS+ with 38 and others with 2 seats. We may recall the NewsX-CNX Exit Poll had predicted that BJP will bag 102 to 110 of the 222 seats, with Congress estimated to grab 72 to 78 seats. The exit poll had also predicted that JDS+ will get around 35 to 39 seats while others in the state were predicted to bag around 3 to 5 seats.

Here’s a look at the NewsX-CNX Exit Poll projections and the final results:

  • News channels line up special shows for Karnataka elections

News channels line up special shows for Karnataka elections

MUMBAI: The Indian media will never let go of an opportunity to milk the most of the country’s favourite event – elections. Channels know that it is a time when people switch over from other genres to news.

The Karnataka Assembly election 2018 is just around the corner and many broadcasters have recently launched new Kannada news channels to not miss out on the event. However, even national channels are cashing in. A bunch of channels was all launched in the last couple of months including iTV network’s NewsX Kannada, Focus group’s Focus TV Kannada and Swaraj express SMBC’s Swaraj Express Kannada.

Elections will be held on 12 May 2018 and the counting of votes and announcement of the result will take place on 15 May 2018.

Times Now has been covering the Karnataka elections for over two months with a series of ground reports and special debates. In studio, a large number of senior journalists and political commentators will give their expert opinion on the result of the poll.

Times Now has planned a full-fledged programming of 16 hours on 12,13 and 14 May 2018 each and on 15 May it will be day long programming. 21 reporters have been spread out across Karnataka and Delhi.

CNN-News18 and News18 India have both lined-up extensive programming. CNN-News18 is airing shows under the branding ‘Battle for Karnataka’ and includes specials such as ‘Poll of Polls’ and ‘Reporters Project’ apart from special episodes of primetime shows – Viewpoint, Face-Off Tonight and News Epicentre hosted by executive editor Bhupendra Chaubey, deputy executive editor Zakka Jacob and political editor Marya Shakil, respectively.

The channel’s popular show Bhaiyaji Kahin, an on-ground show which allows voters to interact directly with leaders, will telecast a host of special episodes from across the state.

Since some networks, such as News18 Network, have channels in multiple languages, it is likely to add new dimensions to reporting. Speaking on the same, a CNN News18 spokesperson told Indiantelevision.com, “The focus of our network’s channels, irrespective of their genre, is to ensure that key issues are highlighted and the different points of view and voices are presented in the most credible fashion in order to empower voters. While the focus on and treatment of specific issues, as well as overall coverage, may vary across different channels based on their core audiences, the above tenet is something that will drive our coverage of these elections across all our channels.”

CNN News18 is airing both shows dedicated to elections and regular shows with election specials. The spokesperson adds, “As we close in on the counting day the quantum of the programming will keep increasing with specials such as the Poll of Polls etc. Of course, the counting day will entirely be dedicated to elections coverage. Even post the same till government formation, the channels will continue to track developments given the importance of these elections.”

Business Television India (BTVI) has started its Namma Elections 2018 daily coverage from 4 May onwards. As part of this special series, BTVI has held various panel discussions with key opinion leaders in the state capital. The programmes will be aired on the channel throughout the week till the results announcement.

BTVI executive editor Siddharth Zarabi says, “Our coverage concentrates on covering topics related to the larger economic, infrastructure and societal issues in the state. As a channel that caters to the decision makers across segments all over India, our programming is focused on themes like brand Bengaluru, politics for change looking beyond caste and creed, ethics in politics and business. We have multiple panel discussions under the umbrella of Namma Election along with multiple one on one discussions with dignitaries from diverse backgrounds sharing their views on Karnataka elections under the umbrella of brand Karnataka.”

BTVI says it has created a destination for viewers to catch all election related programming and 8.30 pm is where it airs one show per day. The same show will be available on all OTT platforms that live stream BTVI – Jio TV, Yupp TV, Hotstar. Besides these, viewers can watch BTVI live on various trading apps like Kotak Stock Trader App, Axis Direct App, IIFL Markets App, etc.

TV Today Network managing editor Supriya Prasad says, that the network is covering the pre-Karnataka election days with shows like Shwet Patra which is hosted by Sweta Singh, Karnataka ka King Kaun and Opinion Poll on Aaj Tak. The network’s prominent anchors are in Karnataka like Rajdeep Sardesai, Rahul Kanwal, Padmaja Joshi and Preeti Chaudhary. Running up to the elections, there are two to three hours of programming and day long shows on the main days.

iTV Network did a ‘Karnataka Next Conclave 2018’ on 7 May to get the insight from the strong political contenders about their preparations before the polls. iTV Network CEO Varun Kohli says, “All the three channels India News, NewsX and NewsX Kannada are doing extensive coverage of the elections.”

With the election day being right around the corner, the channels will be more rigorous in their analysis of the election and give more limelight to the event. MUMBAI: The NewsX-JankiBaat Exit Poll for Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya Assembly Elections 2018 delivered the most credible survey results for the much-anticipated assembly elections in the northeastern states. Each of the three states has a 60-member assembly and the polls have been one of the most closely-watched political battles in the region this year. The survey not only managed to successfully represent the trends but were remarkably close to the actual results.

  • NewsX launches its biggest campaign to unearth non-performing assets

NewsX launches its biggest campaign to unearth non-performing assets

MUMBAI: NewsX has launched India’s biggest investigation into Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) by kicking off a 100-day campaign to help strengthen India’s financial backbone by weeding out non-performing assets that are weighing down on banks.

The channel is committed to dig out details of such assets every day for the next 100 days to enable the country to get a comprehensive picture on what is a pressing national issue involving crores of rupees. In fact, India’s total NPAs amount to over Rs 8 lakh crores, which roughly translates to INR 6,400 for every man, woman and child in the country.

NewsX has based its campaign on its access to an exhaustive list of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) of 2016. The list is over 200 pages long and contains names, addresses and loan amounts of 1,406 companies involving thousands of crores of rupees, which were given by banks and never recovered.

Based on this list, NewsX has started a detailed investigation made possible by a special team.  The team launched systematic checks on addresses corresponding to firms mentioned in the list and unearthed a web of fake addresses, empty buildings and closed shops with locals confirming they were not aware such companies even existed. NewsX also tried contacting banks that have been ‘duped’ by defaulters in the NPAs list; however, there has been no response on this from the banks.

The investigation so far has been as riveting as it is serious. Reiterating India’s commitment to clean up the system, NewsX seeks to turn this campaign into every Indian’s fight against corruption. The channel has appealed to all Indians to join its mission to purge the country’s economy by launching a collective effort to force banks to break their lethargy and make aggressive attempts to recover such dues.

NewsX hopes the campaign will be a reason for employees, bankers and chartered accountants to expose anomalies in systems, emphasising on the protection entitled to them under the Whistle Blowers Protection Act, 2011.

The campaign also seeks support from every Indian to contribute towards creating a system that will not allow defaulters to go unchallenged for long time lengths that allow them to maintain lavish lifestyles on money put into banks as savings and pensions.

Voice your opinion on the campaign using the following hashtag: #NPAFilesonNewsX

  • Republic TV continues to rule English News genre ratings

BENGALURU: The Arnab Goswami led Indian English News channel Republic TV continued to lead the ratings in its genre for week 25 of 2017 (Saturday, 17 June 2017 to Friday, 23 June 2017). Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly data for week 25 showed that Republic TV topped the charts with 868,000 weekly impressions, followed at a fair distance behind (29.6 percent behind) by the earlier genre leader Times Now which scored 670,000 weekly impressions.

This analysis comes with a few caveats. BBC World News has been present in the weekly top five English News channels list for 18 of the first 25 weeks of 2017. It has not been considered here, since it is not an Indian English News channel, but its ratings have been added to the sum of ratings of the top 5 channels in the English New genre as well as to arrive at average weekly ratings. The combined weekly impressions (CWI) mentioned in this analysis includes only those numbers that the channels garnered when they were in the weekly top five channels’ lists. Their overall actual weekly average impressions during the 25 weeks of 2017 could be different. BARC data for weeks 1 to 25 of 2017 for Top 5 English news channels – All India (U+R): NCCS AB : Males 22+ Individuals has been used. For equitable comparison, week 21 of 2017 data for the genre has not been considered at some places in this analysis.

Right from its launch in week 19 of 2017 (6 May 2017 to 12 May 2017) Republic TV has led the genre, displacing Times Now.  During week 19, Republic TV had 2,118,000 weekly impressions, almost double that of Times Now which had 1,148,000 weekly impressions in the same week.  As the weeks have passed, the curiosity factor in Republic TV seems to have diminished and in week 24 of 2015, the difference in the ratings of these two main protagonists in the English News genre was 28,000 weekly impressions with Republic TV’s ratings at 963,000 weekly impressions to Times Now ratings at 935,000 weekly impressions.

The launch of Republic TV gave rise to an ugly war between the existing Indian English News channels and the new entrant. For one week, week 21 of 2017, ratings of the top Indian English news channels were not published as they had stripped their new feeds of the BARC audio watermark. The NBA-backed channels returned to the BARC fold in week 22. Please refer to the chart below for the comparative ratings of the two channels:

    public://F_0.jpg

Though Republic TV seems to have helped increase the ratings for the genre, overall the genre has seen a progressive fall in the combined weekly ratings of the top 5 channels in week 25 from the high of week 19. Before the launch of Republic TV in week 19, the top 5 English News channels had an average combined viewership of 18,83,611 weekly impressions (for weeks 1 to 18 of 2017). After the launch of Republic TV, average viewership ratings of the top 5 channels from the English News genre climbed up by 15.4 percent to 2,173,417 weekly impressions during weeks 1 to 25 of 2017.
