    Ram Rahim verdict coverage boosted news channels’ viewership

    BENGALURU: News about the fate of godman Ram Rahim on Monday, 28 August 2017 was one of the most watched events on news television in the recent past in India going by data shared by Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC).

    Viewership of the Hindi News genre grew 2.1 times from 121.5 million impressions (the average viewership for the previous four Mondays’) to 256.1 million impressions on Monday, 28 August 2017. 

    Here’s how the top 5 Hindi News channels performed on Monday, 28 August 2017 as per BARC data:

    Week 35 of 2017 (Saturday, 26 August 2017 to Friday, 1 September 2017) saw viewership of Hindi News channels grow as compared to week 34 (Saturday 19 August 2917 to Friday, 25 August 2017). The combined viewership of the top 5 Hindi News genre (Urban + Rural) grew 20.4 percent to 738.482 million impressions in week 35 from 613.396 million impressions.

    On the other hand, viewership of the top 5 English News channels actually shrank by 1.2 percent in week 35 to 2.942 million weekly impressions from 2.979 million weekly impressions in week 34 of 2017. It is probably the Ram Rahim verdict day news that helped them retain their previous weeks ratings, almost. The English News Genre grew by 46 percent from 482 Impressions ‘000s (Av Impressions for the last 4 Mondays) to 703 Impressions ‘000s on Monday 28 August 2017.Please refer to the figure below:

    MUMBAI: Week 24 of the BARC ratings has seen the English and Business News genres showing a shrinkage in numbers. Amongst the drop outs from the toppers in the English language news space is CNN News18, even as News 9 climbed up to the fourth position. On the other hand, ratings for the Hindi News space rose substantially, with the exception of Aaj Tak and News Nation.  In the Hindi Business News genre, CNBC TV18 saw an increase in viewership while Zee Business’s ratings went down.

    English News

    Times Now dominated the genre even though its ratings declined to  to 218 Impressions (000s) this week from 364 Impressions (000s) in week 23. NDTV 24×7 took the second berth with 132 Impressions (000s) followed by India Today Television grabbing the third position with 110 Impressions (000s). News 9 entered and News X were at the No 4 and 5 positions with 97 Impressions (000s) each.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV 18 observed a downfall in ratings even as it retained its top position with 80 Impressions (000s) as compared to 143 Impressions (000s) in week 23 followed by ET Now with 78 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime continued at the third position with 43 Impressions (000s) while Bloomberg TV  was at the last spot with 8 Impressions (000s).

    Aaj Tak  clung on to its numero uno position  even though its ratings went south at 70126 Impressions (000s) as compared to 70229 Impressions (000s)  in week 23. India TV continued  at No 2  with 66035 Impressions (000s). ABP News with 46554 Impressions (000s) took the third spot. India News with 42324 Impressions (000s) was at the fourth rung of the news ladder while News Nation took the fifth berth with 38299 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz maintained its first position with its ratings rising to 511 Impressions (000s) from 506 Impressions (000s). The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 304 Impressions (000s) as compared to 410 Impressions (000s) in week 23.

    MUMBAI: Times Now continued to be the undisputed leader in the English News space while CNBC TV 18 dominated the English business news genre. In the Hindi news genre Aaj Tak continued to lead securing the number one position. According to week 11 Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) All India data, the entire news genre saw a decline in the ratings.  

    Meanwhile, CNBC Awaaz stood at the first spot in Hindi business news space.

    News 9 entered the English news space whereas News Nation made a comeback in the Hindi news genre.

    Times Now maintained its first position with 290 (‘000s) followed by India Today Television with 251 (‘000s). NDTV 24×7 took the third birth with 122 (‘000s). News 9 made a comeback this week grabbing the fourth position with 116 (‘000s) whereas CNN-IBN bagged the fifth position with 111 (‘000s).

    CNBC TV 18 secured its number one position with 268 (‘000s) followed by ET Now securing the second slot with 238 (‘000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime with 58 (‘000s) and Bloomberg TV with 17 (‘000s) took the third and fourth position respectively.

    Aaj Tak stood at the first spot with 79605 (‘000s), while India TV took the second position with 72602 (‘000s).  India News jumped to the third position with 58344 (‘000s) followed by ABP News securing the fourth position with 48198 (‘000s). In the Hindi news genre Aaj Tak continued to lead securing the number one position. According to week 11 Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) All India data, the entire news genre saw a decline in the ratings.

    Times Now continues to rule the English news genre and grabbed the pole position with 711 (‘000s) followed by NDTV 24×7 in second place with 348 (‘000s). CNN-IBN with 331 (‘000s) stood at number three. India Today with 223 (‘000s) and BBC World News with 119 (‘000s) were perched at the fourth and fifth spot respectively.

     

    English Business News

     

    ET Now continues to dominate the English business news genre with 323 (‘000s) followed by CNBC TV18 with 265 (‘000s) in the second place and NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime with 110 (‘000s) stood at number three. Bloomberg TV maintained its fifth slot with 11 (‘000s).

    Aaj Tak with 109610 (‘000s) grabbed the pole position in the Hindi news segment. India TV garnered the second position with 81356 (‘000s) and ABP News stood at number three with 68435 (‘000s). Zee News with 63089 (‘000s) and News Nation with 62526 (‘000s) grabbed the fourth and fifth slot respectively.

    CNBC Awaaz led the genre with 1522 (‘000s) followed by Zee Business with 795 (‘000s) at number two.

    MUMBAI: Times Now continues to dominate the English news genre while Aaj Tak secured the leadership position in Hindi news genre.  ET Now continues to lead the English business news genre. Zee Business emerged as the number one channel in Hindi business news channel. Ten Sports secured the leadership position in the sports genre in week 46, according to the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India all India (U + R) data.

    Times Now continues to lead the English news genre with 558 (000Sums) followed by NDTV 24×7 with 304 (000Sums) on second spot and CNN IBN on third with 303 (000Sums).  Indian Today Television and News 9 bagged the fourth and fifth berth with 215 (000Sums) and 212 (000Sums) respectively.

    Aaj Tak continues to lead the Hindi news genre with 80873 (000Sums) followed by India TV with 70194(000Sums) on second spot and Zee News on third with 61343(000Sums).  ABP News and News Nation bagged the fourth and fifth berth with 59261 (000Sums) and 57997 (000Sums) respectively.
