  • CNBC-TV18’s show ‘Young Turks’ teams up with Chumbak for a revamp

CNBC-TV18’s show ‘Young Turks’ teams up with Chumbak for a revamp

Mumbai: CNBC-TV18’s startups and entrepreneurship show, “Young Turks” has completed 19 years. To mark the occasion, the show has hit the refresh through and launched its new logo, designed by Chumbak, a homegrown lifestyle brand.

Over the last two decades, the show has nurtured a community of startups and founders. So far, this year “Young Turks” has not only captured the coming-of-age of Indian startups but also kept its ear to the ground as startups joined India’s fight against COVID-19.

CNBC-TV18 managing editor and show’s helmer Shereen Bhan said, “It has been exciting and gratifying to chronicle the story of India’s startup universe. Over the last 19 years, Indian startups have come of age and Young Turks has been witness to the changes. We start afresh decade, in a milestone year, of IPOs and big deals. We look forward to telling more startup stories and building a robust community of founders, investors, and mentors.”

Chumbak’s co-founder Vivek Prabhakar said, “Chumbak has been associated with Young Turks for a long time and today on their 19th anniversary we are happy to have worked on their rebranding. The new logo stands for the enthusiasm and clarity that today’s startups exuberate.”

Last year, the pandemic upended the way everybody goes about their business. In one of its first ports of call in 2021, Young Turks spoke to startup investors as they crystal gazed into the coming year. Collectively, they indicated that digital is the new dealmaker. Innovations in edtech, fintech, SaaS, and health tech have led to the rise of 16 unicorns in the first half of the year itself, said the channel in a statement.

  • Republic Media provides proof of its innocence in TRP rigging charges

Republic Media provides proof of its innocence in TRP rigging charges

NEW DELHI: Republic Media Network has come out with a statement in which it is claiming a thumping victory against the “fake news propaganda being spread by the Mumbai police about it being found guilty of rigging viewership ratings.”

Republic CEO Vikas Khanchandani has in his possession an official email from the viewership ratings agency Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) in which it has said “there is not a single complaint or malpractice found against Republic TV, Republic Bharat or any other affiliate of the news network.”

The Arnab Goswami founded news network has been claiming from day one of the TRP rigging press conference organised by the Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh that the law keeper has been perpetrating vendetta against him.

The Republic Media release states that the email “crumbles the pack of lies floated and repeated over the last nine days by Param Bir Singh and a section of the media.”

The statement mentions that Republic Media received an email from BARC on 17 October 2020, in which the agency has stated that: “If there was any disciplinary action initiated under the said Code against M/s ARG Outlier Media Private Ltd., then BARC India would have communicated the same to you along with necessary documents for your response.”

With this documentary evidence by BARC out in the public domain, Republic says that three things have been proven:

    ·   The Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh’s comments against Republic TV were “blatantly false, lies and an extension of political vendetta. It is now incumbent on him to apologise for his lie-ridden campaign against India’s Number 1 news network.”

    ·   That every word uttered across certain sections of the media is false, unsubstantiated and fake news. “Now that the truth is out in the public domain, the onus is now on those portals to correct themselves, apologise for the fake news and put out the truth.”

    ·   The Republic Media Network which runs on the highest professional and journalistic standards has been “vindicated after a nine day slander campaign curated by vested interests and we have been duly informed that there was never a case against us.”

The news network has demanded that serious action needs to be taken against the police commissioner as well as the political masters behind him, should they be involved for going on a tirade against it based on a series of lies. It says that it is going to fight against any forces and come out unscathed, no matter how hard the Mumbai police or anyone else tries to intimidate and harass it. “We will comply with the law of the land, but not for a moment give in to the coercive attempts to shut down our pursuit for truth through our journalism. We will fight this campaign both in the courts of law and the court of public opinion, with the people of India by our side,” the statement further says.

  • ABP Network to shift from FTA to pay

ABP Network to shift from FTA to pay

KOLKATA: The news network which recently decided to reposition its brand identity from ABP News Network to ABP Network is also bringing a change to its business model. ABP Network chief executive officer Avinash Pandey said that the network will soon go pay from its current free-to-air (FTA) model.

“We are quite determined we will soon become pay. We are building that kind of content to be acceptable to the people who pay for content.  Our regional channels were already on pay model. We only went FTA because of uncertain environment caused by NTO 1.0. From carriage perspective, NTO 2.0 is favourable,” Pandey said in a virtual fireside chat with Indiantelevision.com founder, CEO and editor in chief Anil Wanvari.

Pandey also noted that he is not in favour of the free-to-air model because anything free in this country is taken for granted. “So, in today’s world when you have WhatsApp circulating all the videos you are likely to show in the evening and Twitter already debating views and counter views before you discuss anything on TV it’s already discussed online. In this scenario, how to build a pay channel is the challenge,” he said.

  • Zee Media confirms 28 employees test positive for Covid2019

Zee Media confirms 28 employees test positive for Covid2019

MUMBAI: At least 28 employees of Zee Media have been tested positive for Covid2019, most of them asymptomatic, an official statement from the channel confirms. The network earlier reported one positive case, who had come in direct or indirect contact with all of these employees.

The channel has shifted its team to an alternative facility for time being and the entire office, newsroom and studios have been sealed for sanitisation.

“The testing of the employees will continue and the ICMR too has relaxed its testing norms to allow us to test asymptomatic individuals,” said the statement.

Zee Media, which has 2500 employees, has assured that “our fearless coverage will continue. And, such challenges will not be able to break our resolve to discharge our duties,” it concludes.

  • How Mathrubhumi News keeps the show going during lockdown

How Mathrubhumi News keeps the show going during lockdown

MUMBAI: The show must go on, come what may. News channels, which have been tagged under the essential services category, continue to produce fresh news content by disseminating information to the viewers irrespective of the Covid2019 challenges. How do they go about their daily business in spite of the restrictions of social distancing? Mathrubhumi News chief executive officer Mohan Nair explains the modus operandi deployed by his channel during the lockdown, which has worked well for him even as it has now moved into a faster pace, following the lifting of the curbs in Kerala.

Nair told indiantelevision.com:  “It is the most trying time, and being a news channel, you cannot compromise on the content and quality at a time when there has been a massive surge in the television news consumption.” The channel has implemented a three-pillar formula to continue with their smooth operation during the Covid2019 pandemic.

In an attempt to maintain social distancing and curb the spread of the virus at office premises, Mathrubhumi News divided itself into three parts with respect to the workforce, wherein two teams would come to the office and work for extended hours, while the third team is kept as a standby in a ‘no work remain home’ system, which has been monitored by the HR department,” says Nair. These are the two pillars of their strategy: the reduced staff at the office and a team on a standby as a last-minute resort.

He adds that these teams function in a rotational manner each week. For example, in the first week, if the first two teams have been working from the office with extended hours and third-team standby at home, then the consecutive week second and third team comes to the office and first-team stays as home as standby.

This division is done within all teams across bureaus that include PCR, MCR, anchors, editorial, admin, housing, technical among others, except for the reporters of the channel. Nair says: “The news we run is only of Covid2019 and reporters have been reporting from fields, hospitals, and interviewing those who are under quarantine. So the chances of them being exposed to the virus are high, and hence, we have asked them to report from wherever possible through video calling or TVU mobile applications.”

“We have a protocol of sanitising the office in between the shifts and also sanitise each employee coming to the office. Not just that, we don’t let the cameraman along with his equipment in before sanitising him, as well as the vehicle he has been travelling in,” says Nair. The moment Kerala started seeing a spike in Covid2019 cases, the Mathrubhumi News management had taken a decision to provide employees with all the necessary safety equipment such as gloves, masks, sanitizers.

The third and most important pillar is technology. “We have been using all necessary technologies to not only connect with reporters but also guests, politicians, chief minister’s office, and other important ministers through video calling applications or by the TVU mobile application. Through OFC lines, which are installed at chief minister's office, ministries, and other political party offices and their places, it becomes easy to connect to them digitally,” says Nair.

Nair adds: “The technology we have been using to connect to people is not new; we had been using it earlier too; however, the increase or dependency of it has increased substantially over the period of time due to the Covid2019 situation.” The channel uses Skype, WhatsApp, Zoom and all other video calling applications for broadcast but most-preferred one is TVU application that helps it to maintain broadcast quality and to overcome the other technical challenges.

The channel, so far, has hosted many interviews virtually, one of them with the state health minister to answer people’s queries and address their concerns about the virus. Moreover, in order to entertain the audience, the channel also brings the celebrities to talk to people, motivate them, entertain them and also share their daily lifestyle during the pandemic period.

Every other channel, be it mainstream or regional, is trying their best to run the show while engaging the audience. While news channels follow each other’s steps, Mathrubhumi is ensuring the show of broadcasting news continues uninterrupted.

  • Faye D’Souza launches news channel on Firework

Faye D’Souza launches news channel on Firework

MUMBAI: Now we know what firebrand journo Faye D’souza will be doing. She has partnered with short video content platform FireWork. A channel called Facts first with Faye has been launched.

Its focus: “Everything you need to know about what’s happening in the world. News like it should be done.”

The channel has already got 727 followers, and Faye has been posting videos of between 20-30 seconds each. And the stories cover a wide swathe of topics: Harry & Meghan’s Mexit, Transgenders in Census, Controversial Brazil President to visit India, India ranked 76 out of 82, Shah won’t withdraw CAA, India Dragging Global economy, Delhi under NSA, among many others.

Faye has been giving her unique take in the news clips. For instance: “Brazil’s  president being the chief guest at the republic day parade, sends a signal that we are encouraging that kind of culture.”

The videos are simple and have her giving pieces to camera – shot probably with her phone –  interspersed with graphics.

Faye has also been active on twitter. And she has been pretty brazen and fearless.  Her response to a tweet posted by NDTV stating that  Amit Shah has dared Rahul Gandhi, Mamta Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav to a public debate on Citizenship Act at rally in Lucknow went as follows: “Mr Home Minister. I respectfully volunteer to debate with you on the CAA. Just say when!”

Firework India CEO Sunil Nair said “Firework’s news segments with Faye D’Souza will be a gamechanger in the short format video category. This format of news is crafted keeping in mind the preferences of younger millennials between the age of 18 and 25, matching their fast-paced lifestyle and their need to consume content on the go in vertical format. Youngsters in this age group prefer quick news rather than extended television debates, and at the same time is a concerned and well-informed citizen. This is where Firework’s news format will be disruptive providing the point information without the repetitious and at times frivolous long format broadcast news. The current generation does not identify with many of the faces that have been on TV channels for a really long time, Faye helps news bridge the gap and talks directly to her audience in a way that they understand the news quickly”.

This will be a first of its kind interactive news that will enable real time interaction between Faye and her viewers, driving deeper engagement and participation. Initially Faye will post 4 news segments on weekdays and with a single segment on the weekends. Each segment will be a 30 second clip titled “Facts First with Faye”

Faye D’Souza said “News today offers anything but clarity of information. The youth in India are intelligent, opinionated and are looking for a source of news that gives them unbiased information in a short and crisp format that can be consumed “on the go”, 'Facts First with Faye’ will do just that. Firework is an innovative tech led platform that will help offer news and entertainment to the youth that prefers to ignore long drawn and unverified commentary”

Firework launched its video network in India in October 2019 and takes pride in its two- step moderation protocol. While its moderation is largely based on AI algorithms, its content also goes through careful human moderation. This will ensure that any content that is distributed is not only within the legal boundaries of India, but also filters content that may be discriminatory towards any section of the democracy.
