Aaj Tak claims to grab major market share in BARC India news ratings

MUMBAI: Aaj Tak has got the lion’s portion of the market share at 24.9 per cent, according to the BARC data provided to TV Today.

According to data available with TV Today, the news channels that have made it to the top in the Hindi News Channels Category are TV9 Bharatvarsh  (22.8 percent), Republic Bharat  (19.4 per cent), Zee News (15.7 per cent), Zee Hindustan (7.2 per cent), News Nation (7.0 per cent), DD News (2.0 per cent), India News (1.0 per cent).

The much anticipated Broadcasters Audience Research Council (BARC) viewership data for news channels are finally out after a hiatus of 17 months. The news genre has got its viewership stats back today. The data is available for weeks 6-10.

The advertising and marketing industry has been looking forward to the return of the ratings as much of the annual deals are done in the March-April period and a lot is riding on the ratings. These are the first Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India ratings in nearly 2 years and all the players in the segment will know where they stand on the viewership table.

Earlier last week, News broadcaster NDTV, which owns and operates NDTV 24×7 and NDTV India, had pulled out of Barc India’s rating system citing that the broadcaster doesn’t find it feasible to subscribe to BARC India’s rating system “till it is reconfigured and becomes far more transparent.”

Option of further delaying news channel ratings being discussed: Reports

Mumbai: The Broadcast Audience Research Council (Barc) India is contemplating the option of postponing the date of resuming TRP ratings. The TV measurement body had announced in February that ratings for news channels would resume on 17 March.

As per a PTI report, several news channels have reached out to Barc asking for the release of TRP rating data from different periods.

Some have asked that only data from mid-March be released, while others have suggested data of the previous three months be released. Different bodies of TV news channels have also expressed their views. So, the ministry is looking into the option on whether to extend the date for TRP rating resumption, according to the report.

Barc suspended ratings for individual channels in the news genre in October 2020 following a TRP rigging scam allegedly involving some private channels.

The I&B ministry directed Barc to maintain the status quo in February 2021 in view of alleged reports of manipulation of ratings data and review the whole ecosystem of publishing of ratings. It instituted a committee under chairmanship of Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati to make recommendations on strengthening the TV ratings ecosystem in India.

The ministry had asked Barc to resume the release of news ratings on 12 January after review of steps taken by the TV measurement agency on corporate governance, streamlining of processes and their transparency.

NBF implores Barc India to resume TV ratings

Mumbai: The News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) has once again written to Broadcast Audience Research Council (Barc) India seeking immediate resumption of TV ratings for news channels. The letter dated 28 January is addressed to the chairperson and members of the board of directors of Barc India.

The ratings for news channels were suspended in October 2020 and are yet to be resumed despite the I&B ministry’s directive.

Highlighting that its member news channels have been paying Barc subscriptions even during the blackout period of 16 months, the NBF implored Barc to release the news genre data by 3 February 2022 (Thursday). However, no data has been released till the filing of the report.

“We would like to bring to light how numerous advertisers, have publicly and individually, iterated the need for the return of ratings. In absence of ratings, the entire industry is suffering and faces a steeper challenge with every delay by Barc,” NBF stated.

The representative body also highlighted that in a sworn affidavit dated 17 August 2021, the Bombay high court had stated that the defendant (referring to Barc) will restore access to the weekly channel data as and when, and if, this is permitted by the government or the regulator. If on the other hand, the government permits the release of all weekly channel data, including for past periods, the defendant will supply that to the plaintiffs. “Now that the government has categorically called for the release of ratings, it is baffling and unfathomable why Barc is refusing to act,” wrote NBF.

The ministry of information and broadcasting (I&B) on 12 January 2021 had asked Barc to release news ratings with immediate effect and also release the last three months’ data. When queried by a journalist on Twitter, TRP committee chairperson Shashi Shekhar Vempati also stated, “I am hopeful that ratings for the news genre are resumed at the earliest. I see no reason for Barc India to further delay the matter.”

While the rating agency has decided to remain mum on the issue, several news reports have indicated that ratings will return only in March.

Need immediate resumption of viewership ratings: NBF to Anurag Thakur

Mumbai: Governing board members and senior member broadcasters of News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) met with the minister of information and broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, on Tuesday.

During the meeting, members of NBF highlighted the need for the immediate resumption of viewership ratings for the news genre. The ratings “have been unilaterally paused and have severely impacted the sustainability of news channels”, they said.

The new broadcast body apprised the I&B minister of key issues facing the news industry, recent growth and trends in the broadcasting sector, and challenges faced by news broadcasters in recent times.

“It was a pleasure to meet and exchange views with the NBF governing board led by Arnab Goswami,” said Anurag Thakur. “It was a productive exchange of views and I look forward to engaging with the NBF on issues regarding news broadcasting and the role of news broadcasting in strengthening our democracy,” he added.

The NBF governing board informed the minister about key initiatives undertaken by the body to provide greater representation to channels broadcasting in various languages and on further steps to strengthen regulation among member channels.

The NBF delegation included Republic Media Network, editor-in-chief, Arnab Goswami; TV9 News Network, CEO, Barun Das; Prag News, founder/MD, Sanjive Narain; Pride East Entertainment, chairperson/MD, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma; ITV Network founder/promoter, Kartikeya Sharma; Fourth Dimension, CEO, Shankar Bala; TV9 Bharatvarsh, news director, Hemant Sharma; News Nation, editor-in-chief, Manoj Gairola; MHOne, chairperson, Mahendra Bhatla; Newsfirst Kannada, business head, Divaakar S; NBF and Eshita, secretary-general, and associate for policy and regulations of NBF, R Jai Krishna.

“The meeting of NBF members with the Minister was a wonderful opportunity to apprise him about the steps we have taken to build India’s largest federation of news broadcasters,” said NBF president Arnab Goswami. “The Minister has heard our views and concerns in detail and we look forward to working with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to make the news broadcasting sector even stronger.”

Shankar Bala called the meeting “path-breaking” and said, “We have particularly stated that it is essential to release the viewership ratings for news channels, which were unilaterally stopped. The resumption of the publication of news ratings will ensure fair play and measurement-driven competitive news industry.”

“The highly competitive news TV genre certainly needs a level-playing field for new promising players both in the national arena and regional markets. We felt extremely assured after our meeting today,” said Barun Das.

“As a team, NBF put forth the problems we tend to face and the ways in which we want to raise and address our concerns. At least, we can go forward and help regional industries survive, like ours. The minister gave us a patient hearing and we are very grateful to the Ministry. We are now looking forward to the future and ways as to how we can progress together,” said Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

“The minister heard out all the matters raised by various members of the NBF. I would like to thank the minister for hearing the viewpoints of all news channels from across India and from regional channels as well,” said Kartikeya Sharma.
