    Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke to be honoured at NY film fest

    MUMBAI: The New York Film Festival (NYFF), this year will honour veteran actors Ethan Hawke and Richard Gere. The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced that the actors would be guest of honours at the fest’s ‘An Evening With…’ series.

     

    While Hawke’s tribute will take place on 30 September, during which he will participate in an ‘intimate dinner’ and a conversation between the guests and NYFF director Kent Jones, Gere will be honoured on 8 October.

     

    The ‘An Evening With…’ galas are meant to recognise the work of individuals who have made significant artistic contributions to film culture.

     

    While Hawke will be attending the festival as a director on behalf of his documentary Seymour: An Introduction, a documentary about the pianist Seymour Bernstein, Gere’s new movie Time Out of Mind, in which he plays a homeless man, will also be screened at the annual fest.

     

    The festival will open this year with the world premiere of David Fincher’s Gone Girl and will also feature the world premiere of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest, Inherent Vice, as its centerpiece selection.

     

    Previous honourees include Nicole Kidman, David Cronenberg, Cate Blanchett and Ralph Fiennes. This is the 52nd year of the festival and it will run from 26 September to 12 October. The 17-day festival will host 30 films this year.

    Taiwanese gangster films highlight of New York Asian Filmfest

    NEW DELHI: The 12th New York Film Festival will include a major tribute to Taiwan exploitation cinema and close with the Taiwan-produced kung fu-musical The Rooftop.
     
    Rooftop, which screens in New York just days after it opens in China and Taiwan, is described as a "musical extravaganza" with romance, martial arts and special effects. The film stars musician Jay Chou, also directing, opposite Gary Yang and Alan Ko.
     
    The Festival, to be held from 28 June to 15 July, will have a highlight in Taiwan Pulp! Tales of Gangsters, Female Avengers and Ninjas! focusing on a little-known period of Asian exploitation cinema from 1979 to 1983 with five rarely-screened classics and the documentary Taiwan Black Movies (2005).
     
    The festival has also announced New York-set Thai thriller Countdown, martial arts biopic Ip Man: The Final Fight, China western An inaccurate Memoir and Japanese horror films Helter Skelter and Lesson of the Evil.

    Pakistani film Lamha bags two awards at New York Film Festival

    NEW DELHI: Pakistani film “Lamha (Seedlings)” bagged two awards at the New York City International Film Festival (NYCIFF), which concluded last week.

    “Lamha” won the Best Feature Film award and its leading lady Aamina Sheikh won the Best Actress in Leading Role award in a late-night ceremony at the Angelika Film Centre in New York.

    The film was nominated in five other categories, including Best Actor in Leading Role (Mohib Mirza), Best Actor in Supporting Role (Gohar Rasheed), Best Score, Best Original Screenplay (Summer Nicks) and Best Director (Mansoor Mujahid).

    Lamha weaves through the life of a young couple Maliha (Sheikh) and Raza (Mirza) and those affected by their deep struggle to reconnect after the loss of their only child in a tragic accident. The film’s premiere at the festival, on 10 August, was a sold out affair at the Tribeca Cinema

    Gulshan Grover gets New York fest best actor award

    MUMBAI: The New York Film Festival has honoured Gulshan Grover by presenting him with the Best Actor award for Desperate Endeavors.

    The Counsel General of Austria Gerald Seidl and Director of Film commission of Houston Rick Ferguson presented the award to Grover.

    Also present at the award ceremony was the Mayor of Houston, head of Houston film Festival, filmmakers and Sam Khassa, director of Desperate Endeavors.
