The companies stated the channel would feature a free video webcast during today’s launch party, live from The Speaking Channel studios near Times Square in New York City, beginning at 6:30 pm, ET. The Speaking Channel was soft-launched during TV Worldwide’s webcast of Streaming Media East in New York City, on the 23 and 24 May.

Since that time, this internet TV channel has leveraged compelling new content to attract strong audience participation from those interested in honing their presentation skills, whether they are speaking to large or small audiences, the news media or in civic or social arenas, states an official release.

The channel features content that addresses speaking excellence to build individual presentation skills in the following areas. 1. Business (large and small group presentations). 2. Public life (civic affairs and politics). 3. Work life (employee communication/job interviews). 4. Family/social communication (parties/networking events). The Channel will continue to feature television programming that celebrates outstanding spoken communication and gives viewers learning tools on how to build and improve their own speaking skills, the release adds.

Most important, we know The Speaking Channel will offer our industry partners a unique innovative avenue for communicating with their target demographic audiences through viral on-line distribution as we build the channel’s community.”

  • BBC World launches ad campaign to generate buzz in New York City

MUMBAI: BBC World launched in the US on 1 June 2006. To support the launch, the channel is running an ad campaign in New York City. The outdoor campaign created by BBDO New York communicates ‘unbiased international news’, through three thought-provoking and impactful creative approaches.

The first –Develop a Point of View- is an interactive digital billboard situated on the corner of Broadway and 50th Street. The first-of-its-kind billboard displays dramatic news photographs and invites people to text in their votes on key news issues. New Yorkers and visitors can vote whether illegal immigrants should be considered ‘citizens’ or ‘criminals’; US soldiers, ‘occupiers’ or ‘liberators’; bird flu, ‘imminent’ or ‘preventable’ and China ‘befriend’ or ‘beware’.

The votes will appear on the billboard in real-time and the updated tallies will be broadcast twice daily on WFAN’s “Imus in the Morning” show, as part of the BBC World radio promotion.

The second approach -See Both Sides of the Story- uses poster sites featuring photographs creatively wrapped around building corners, with the entire story becoming clear only when the viewer sees both sides of the image.

The poster site imagery takes an impartial look at a Jewish settler struggling against Israeli security officers during a West Bank settlement evacuation; an American soldier guarding a burning oil well in Iraq; French protestors fighting the Paris police force; U.S. border patrol facing Mexican immigrants and an Iraqi family following President Bush’s interview in front of a television set.

Whilst the first and second creative approaches communicate BBC World’s core strength of impartiality, the third focuses on the truly global content the channel will bring to US viewers. News Beyond Your Borders is about reminding Americans that there is news outside America and that BBC World gives its viewers that global perspective. It has been appearing from 5 June onwards, via posters and interior cards on commuter rail network.

Each ad is a puzzle, which at first glance appears to be a vaguely familiar map, but on further examination reveals a new and arresting image – a soldier with a gun; a health worker holding an infected bird; a hostage being detained and a city under water. The execution will also appear as an insert in the Financial Times and Newsday in June.

BBC World head of marketing Seema Kotecha said: “BBC World has decided to develop an unprecedented, bold and interactive campaign to generate buzz around New York and spark debate around some of the key global news issues that affect all of us. These powerful images highlight the global perspective and the impartiality of coverage, for which BBC World is known around the world.

“Research shows us that American viewers are increasingly interested in international news, yet most U.S. news networks are spending less airtime on international news stories. We hope to fill this gap in the market and are delighted to have the opportunity to bring our 24-hour global coverage and analysis to North American shores for the first time.”

George Alagiah, a BAFTA award-winning journalist and one of the BBC’s most respected and well-known news anchors, is in New York this week to help officially launch BBC World channel in the U.S. Mr. Alagiah will also be hosting a media breakfast to launch BBC World News Today, a new hour long news programme to be broadcast globally from 3 July.

The 24-hour BBC World channel is available to all iO: Interactive Optimum digital cable customers throughout Cablevision’s New York metropolitan service area on channel 104.

  • TV pilot production drops 23% in Los Angeles

TV pilot production drops 23% in Los Angeles

MUMBAI: Los Angeles’ television pilot production during the February-May pilot season declined about 23 per cent in 2006, from 105 shows produced in 2005 to 81 this year. The drop in Los Angeles occurred as production in other regions grew significantly.

According to the findings of a survey done by FilmL.A., Inc., while the overall number of pilots produced for the season slipped three per cent (from 124 to 120 projects), L.A.’s share of the season total fell to 68 per cent, a 21 per cent drop from the 85 per cent share in 2005.

FilmL.A.’s second annual overview of pilot production was based on an industry-wide survey of production companies. The data shows that L.A.’s loss resulted in a gain for other locales, most notably New York City, which saw its pilot production share increase to 11 projects, from seven in 2005.

The Canadian provinces matched NYC’s tally with 11 pilots (vs. five in 2005). Washington DC hosted three pilots, while Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas each had two pilots. Massachusetts, Illinois, Tennessee, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Utah split the remainder with one pilot each. In all, 39 of this year’s 120 pilots were produced outside of Los Angeles; more than double the number recorded last year.

FilmL.A. president Steve MacDonald says the survey’s results challenge the assumption that most pilots would be shot in Los Angeles. “Aggressive incentives from other jurisdictions have now succeeded in attracting almost a third of the season’s pilot productions. Without a significant response, we’re not likely to retain a majority share for much longer,” said MacDonald.

As for the economic impact, MacDonald says the production shift this pilot season cost Los Angeles thousands of jobs and as much as $70 million in production spending. Approximately $216 million of this season’s $370 million production pie was spent in Los Angeles. These figures are based on industry average pilot costs of $4 million for a one-hour drama, and $2 million for a half-hour comedy or other genre episode.

In addition to tracking pilot production, FilmL.A. also examined new series orders for the upcoming broadcast network season in order to track the production locations for these shows. The total number of pilots picked up as new and mid-season shows declined from 47 in 2005 to 39 this year, with 30 slated for the fall schedule and nine scheduled to debut mid-season. Twenty-six of the new shows will be produced in Los Angeles (13 one-hour, 13 half-hour), eight in New York (six one-hour, two half-hour), two one-hour shows in Canada and one one-hour show each in Texas, Rhode Island and a still undisclosed location. In the transition from pilot episode to picked up series, one show is moving from New York to Toronto, and another is moving from Los Angeles to New York.

The nine mid-season replacements will include five half-hour shows produced in Los Angeles, one one-hour show each in New York and Canada, and two shows for which locations have not yet been announced. All tolled, the 26 new shows slated for production in Los Angeles represent a 67 per cent share of the new show total, down from 74 per cent in 2005 (when L.A. garnered 35 of 47 new shows).

MacDonald says FilmL.A.’s overview of pilot and new show production provides further evidence that other locales are offering more than just tax breaks. “In addition to seeing other regions gain a bigger share of the pilot production pie, it’s clear that many have developed the infrastructure to support new shows for the long haul.”
