    MUMBAI: From breaking headlines to making one Rahul Kanwal has officially taken the hot seat at NDTV. India’s most trusted news network, New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV), has named Rahul Kanwal as its new chief executive officer and editor-in-chief, signalling a high-octane chapter in the brand’s storied legacy. In this dual role, Kanwal will steer both editorial and business operations at NDTV, an institution that has long been the gold standard in Indian journalism.

    With over 25 years of newsroom muscle, Kanwal brings a potent mix of prime-time credibility, investigative grit, and election coverage flair. His previous innings at India Today, Aaj Tak, Business Today, Headlines Today, and Zee News saw him rise through the ranks as news director, executive director, and senior editorial leader.

    An alumnus of the Harvard Business School’s General Management Program, and a Chevening Scholar trained in international broadcast journalism at Cardiff University, Kanwal also holds a journalism degree from Delhi University. His mantle includes accolades like the Roy Peck Trust Grant for Hostile Environment Journalism, among other awards for excellence in the field.

  • NDTV won’t apologise for Pathankot coverage

    MUMBAI: New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) has told the Supreme Court that it will not tender an apology for its coverage of the Pathankot airbase terror attack on 2 January 2016.

    Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for NDTV, informed a bench of justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan who briefly heard the matter that the channel will not tender an apology for its coverage.

    Law officer solicitor-general Ranjit Kumar said that, since NDTV had refused to furnishing a letter of apology, there was no other option but to hear the matter on merit. The case will be heard after three weeks.

    The government had imposed a one-day blackout order against NDTV India (since held in abeyance) which will be reversed after it offers an apology.

    On 3 November, 2016, the ministry of information & broadcasting (I&B) asked NDTV India to go off-air for a day on 9 November for revealing sensitive details on the Pathankot attack.

    NDTV then moved the apex court challenging the constitutional validity of the order and the provisions of law pursuant to which the said order has purportedly been passed.

    MUMBAI: New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) has appointed John Martin O’Loan as an independent director with effect from 15 February, 2016.

    The company said that the appointed had received a stamp of approval from the Ministry of Broadcasting.

    O’Loan initially was a director in NDTV Networks Plc and Parliamentary Broadcasting Unit Limited. His most recent directorship was with IO TV LLP.

    NDTV inks deals with multiple potential investors for e-commerce ventures

    MUMBAI: The Prannoy Roy led New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) has signed preliminary deals with certain potential investors for its e-commerce ventures in the fields of food, auto, and gadgets.

     

    In the auto sector, portals like CarDekho.com, CarWale.com, CabKhabri.com and Gaadi.com amongst others operate in the Indian market. In the food sector too, portals for pre-cooked and uncooked food like travelkhana.com,merafoodchoice.com, Getlunchin.com and biryani360.com have mushroomed recently. On the other hand, portals specifically selling gadgets are far and few.

     

    An established player in the news content business, NDTV has ample online content around these segments in NDTV Gadgets (gadgets.ndtv.com), NDTV Food (food.ndtv.com) and NDTV Auto (auto.ndtv.com). NDTV’s e-commerce ventures in these specific areas will only stand to benefit from the backing it will receive from the network.

     

    While the company has signed term sheets with potential investors in the food, auto and gadgets sectors, along with its subsidiary company NDTV Convergence, it did not divulge names of the companies that the deals have been signed with.

     

    It may be recalled that in March this year, NDTV’s board had given in principle approval for setting up of online ventures including digital transactions.

     

    In a filing on the Bombay Stock Exchange, NDTV said, “The term sheets are non-binding and are subject to the parties agreeing upon and executing the definitive agreements, which will include detailed terms and conditions in relation to the proposed transactions.”

     

    The company said that the proposed transactions would be subject to various conditions precedent to be specified in the definitive agreements, including due diligence, receipt of requisite corporate authorizations, approvals and regulatory approvals.

     

    On the e-commerce front, NDTV through its subsidiary NDTV Ethnic Retail already operates Indianroots, which sells ethnic wear from various Indian designers. The venture recently also raised $5 million in funding from the Mumbai-based KJS Group.
