News18 India launches Aaj Ka No.1 campaign – asserts its leadership in Prime-time

MUMBAI: News18 India, Network18’s general Hindi News channels, has in recent time witnessed unprecedented growth. The channel has emerged as the No. 1 channel in the Hindi News genre in the key prime time band – 7-11pm -in Urban India. Starting with Aar Paar at 7pm a fiery debate anchored by Amish Devgan, Hum Toh Poochnge a substantive discussion on the day’s top story at 8pm anchored by Sumit Awasthi and a fast paced & sharp news bulletin with Kishore Ajwani at 9 pm – Sau Baat ki ek Baat, the channel has a power packed line-up of shows which has allowed it to create a niche for itself amongst Hindi News audiences.

The Aaj Ka No.1 campaign intends to celebrate the channel’s success in a highly cluttered category with over a dozen channels vying for eyeballs. It directly takes on the competition and asserts that News18 India has altered the pecking order in the category. The 360 degree campaign which will run across various media including TV, print, social and trade media will clearly seek to project that the momentum in the genre is now with News18 India – the Aaj ka No. 1. The campaign will use a visual device & treatment that is meant to ensure high recall and share of buzz for the same.

Commenting on the campaign Network18, Group Brand Advisor, Rahul Kansal said “News 18 India has grown steadily in the past few months, to emerge as urban India’s leading Hindi News channel in prime-time. We have a line-up of strong anchors who take up issues in a purposeful way with a desire to shed light, not just create sound, (as seems to have become the norm).“

  • With four elections due, networks with regional news channels set to benefit

With four elections due, networks with regional news channels set to benefit

MUMBAI: With four key assembly elections lined up towards the end of the year, India’s regional news channels could be laughing their way to the bank. In a bid to maximize their revenues, channels are in the process of sprucing up their programming and hiking ad rates. iTV Network, Network18, Zee News Network will be the ones set to benefit the most because due to their presence in the Hindi, English and regional markets.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram are the our states going to polls ahead of the big 2019 general election.

iTV Network CEO Varun Kohli says, “If you see, the regional market is growing and the local people want to consume content in local languages. Regional channels in the coming future are going to be the biggest growth areas than anybody else and the coverage will be hyper local. In a national channel the programming will be of an hour or so, but the regional channel will cover the elections for 24 hours a day.”

News24 editor-in-chief Annuradha Prasad feels, “Three elections in the Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh they are all Hindi heartland channels and national news channels expect a better response from the brands and advertisers unlike the Karnataka elections which didn’t have a great impact on the national news channels because of the local language affinity.”

The news genre contributes eight per cent to the total TV viewership. It was the third biggest genre on television in terms of viewership in 2017, as per the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data.

Zee Media CEO- regional news Purushottam Vaishnava says, “We have started four programmes based on the coming elections. Our focus is to reach all the constituencies and give a real picture of the issues. At the time of elections the general entertainment channels (GEC) viewers shift to news channels and we are expecting minimum of 25-30 per cent hike in ad rates for our regional channels.”

iTV Network has NewsX in English, India News in Hindi and for the regional focus on elections India News Rajasthan and India News MP-CG.

“The increase in consumption helps in getting advertisers as they look at the eyeballs. Both national and local advertisers show interest at the time of elections and for national advertisers it is not that expensive like the Hindi news channels. Ad rates at the time of elections grow by 25-30 per cent. The regional news channels command half the price  of Hindi news channels”, Kohli adds.

FMCG, retail and India-based multinational companies are the major advertisers on Hindi news channels, whereas automobile, banking financial services and electronic brands tend to utilize their ad spend on English news channels. FMCG brands and local retail brands are the primary advertisers on regional channels.

    Network18 has dedicated channels – News18 Rajasthan, News18 MP-CG and News18 Assam/North-East –  in all the election-bound states.

TV18 president- revenue and Forbes India CEO Joy Chakraborthy said, “Every state elections has become the national things these days, in the recent Karnataka elections, the national channels also made good money along with the regional channels.”

Zee Media’s regional sales team is pitching to national brands and corporates. The state assembly elections are a very big opportunity for companies that are planning enter the tier two, three and four markets.

On national brands approaching regional news channel for greater air time Prasad says, “ Yes, that happens because viewers watch the regional channel at the time of elections and get to know about each constituency. But the reach of a Hindi news channel cannot be matched by anyone.”

Network18 is planning to increase the ad rates 10-12 times for all the English, Hindi and regional channels.

“The counting day ad rates are sold at a high premium compared to the normal rates. The rates touch Rs 1 lakh mark at some special spots on the counting days”, Chakraborthy points out.

  • Barkha Dutt to launch her own English news channel?

Barkha Dutt to launch her own English news channel?

MUMBAI: Another one bites the bullet. The buzz has been gathering pace that celebrity journalist-editor Barkha Dutt is gradually ammo-ing up to launch her own English-language TV news channel. In doing so, the former face of NDTV’s prime time shows will follow in the footsteps of some of her other famous colleagues like Rajdeep Sardesai (now re-christened CNN-IBN) and Arnab Goswami (Republic TV).

Apparently, she has found a bunch of backers in New Delhi and Haryana who are willing to fund her foray into a full-fledged TV news channel.

While its name and launch date is still in the works, Dutt’s star power is guaranteed to generate plenty of excitement and curiosity in the news industry and among audiences in the days to come.

Indiantelevision.com tried reaching out to Dutt for confirmation of the same, but she didn’t respond to queries.

It’s interesting that she is taking the news channel plunge at a time when the fortunes are on the way down for her former boss, NDTV’s Prannoy Roy, who has been facing a barrage of intimidating requests from the income tax and other government departments. In recent times, NDTV has had to cut down on manpower too and Dutt was amongst the first ones to let go.

This isn’t the first time Dutt – who shot to fame during her Kargil reportage with NDTV in the late 1990s – has been linked with the launch of an English news channel. In 2017, the Financial Express had carried a report about her joining hands with Network18’s founder and former owner Raghav Bahl to set up a news channel.

Dutt, who continues to draw sharp reactions from TV audiences, has taken quite a diverse set of projects on her plate after her 21-year association with NDTV.

After the rather abrupt end of her collaboration with former Indian Express editor-in-chief-turned-entrepreneur Shekhar Gupta at the digital venture The Print, Dutt went on to establish a company called MoJo, which some say also has links to mobile journalism.

Under the MoJo banner, the 46-year-old interviews major newsmakers in her inimitable style. She also writes columns for the Hindustan Times, Washington Post and The Week.

Known as a frequent baiter of Republic TV boss Arnab Goswami on Twitter, it would be interesting to observe the tone and tenor of the TV news channel helmed by her.

Other details of the news venture, including the applicant-company’s name, are still a bit sketchy as it is not clear yet whether an application to start a full-fledged TV news channel has already been made by Dutt and her partners at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which has started clearing channel proposals after a nine-month hiatus.

With over six million Twitter followers, Dutt remains one of media’s most important voices despite severe trolling on social media for her known viewpoints — dubbed controversial by a section of India — on issues linked to Kashmir and Pakistan.

It now remains to be seen whether she still has it in her to shape the political and social narrative in her second coming.
