Netflix teams up with DreamWorks for original Kids series

MUMBAI: Online content platform Netflix has partnered DreamWorks Animation to create the first ever Netflix Original Series for kids based on the highly-anticipated DreamWorks Animation movie Turbo.

The Netflix series titled Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team) debuts exclusively this December in the United States and across the globe in the 40 countries where Netflix offers its service.

“Families love Netflix, so creating an original series for kids was a natural for us. And we‘re doing it in a big way by adapting Turbo, this year‘s DreamWorks Animation summer tent pole movie,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

“DreamWorks Animation has a long track record of creating incredibly successful characters and stories that delight people of all ages. We‘re thrilled to add Turbo the series as well as all new DreamWorks Animation films, starting with their 2013 slate, to Netflix.”
“Netflix boasts one of the largest and fastest-growing audiences in kid’s television. They pioneered a new model for TV dramas with House of Cards, and now together, we‘re doing the same thing with kids‘ programming,” said DreamWorks Animation‘s CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.

DreamWorks Animation‘s Turbo is a high velocity 3D comedy about an ordinary snail who dares to dream big – and fast. After a freak accident miraculously gives him the power of super-speed, Turbo kicks his dreaming into overdrive and embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the seemingly impossible: competing in the Indianapolis 500.

The film, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzman, Bill Hader , Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez , Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Lion and Samuel L. Jackson, comes to theaters on 19 July.

Turbo‘s pursuit of racing greatness continues in Turbo: F.A.S.T.: an episodic animated television series that picks up where the feature film leaves off. It showcases the world-traveling exploits of our snail hero and his tricked-out racing crew as they master outrageous new stunts and challenges any villain unlucky enough to cross their path.

In addition to the original TV series Turbo: F.A.S.T., new DreamWorks Animation feature titles will be made available for Netflix members in the U.S. to watch beginning with the studio‘s 2013 film line-up.

3net reaches 40 mn households in two years

MUMBAI: 3net, the joint venture 3D network from Discovery, Sony and Imax, has reached 40 million US households even as it approaches its second anniversary on 13 February

3net is available across five programme distribution affiliates, including DirecTV, Comcast, Service Electric Cablevision and Netflix.

In addition to the network‘s specials, concerts and one-off documentaries debuted over the past two years, February also marks a programming milestone for 3net, as the network premieres its 13th 3D series.

3net said it has benefited significantly from the rise of 3D TV adoption, with 3D televisions currently in almost one quarter of all homes in the U.S. and industry forecasts for significant further growth in 2013. By contrast, HD television had achieved low single digit household penetration at the same point in its evolutionary cycle more than a decade ago.

3net president, CEO Tom Cosgrove said, “With 3D televisions already in nearly 25 million US households – and industry predictions of dramatic in-home 3D growth this year – we celebrate our second anniversary with a continued commitment to meeting the ever-growing consumer appetite for high-quality, original 3D television content.

“We‘re proud to make our unique brand of immersive, original 3D programming available to more than 40 million US homes, and we look forward to further growth in the in-home 3D market as more consumers embrace the format – particularly as the electronics industry continues to include 3D as a feature available in nearly all of the new television models available to consumers this year, including every UHD/4K set coming to market.”

3net also recently launched 3net Studios, with an overarching mission to fuel not only the flagship US channel service, but also to make the highest quality native 3D and 4K content available to consumers around the globe through a broad array of international distribution partners.

‘Crazy Land‘ is a new original series which explores the great American subcultures and the unusual people who inhabit them. In the first episode, ‘Real Life Super Heroes‘, young people are donning masks and capes to create a new breed of true-life super heroes. These costumed crusaders are putting themselves on the front line, whether by confronting muggers, drug dealers or feeding the homeless.

Netflix reports $8 million profit in fourth quarter

MUMBAI: OTT service Netflix surprised Wall Street by reporting a fourth quarter profit of $8 million. As a result the stock jumped by over 30 per cent.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said, “Our holiday season was particularly strong, driven by consumers buying new electronic devices, including tablets and smart TVs. We added nearly 10 million global streaming members in 2012; we grew to over 33 million global streaming members; (and) we generated profits for the year 2012, despite large international investments establishing Netflix in 40 countries around the world.”

“When it comes to competition, we not only have a superior content offering due to our larger budget, but we are further along the experience curve when it comes to improving our user interface and delivering great quality streaming”.

The company reported revenues of $945 million, a rise of eight per cent from the same period in 2011. For the future, the company expects to add 1.7 million new members during the first quarter of 2013. But it also expects relatively flat net income for the quarter due to declining DVD profits and increased operating costs globally.

Netflix continues to lose money internationally. During the quarter, Netflix grew to more than six million international members. But the gains in the US more than offset the declines of the DVD unit and international losses.

Picturehouse reopens doors with founder Bob Berney at the helm

MUMBAI: Picturehouse, the full-service independent film marketing and distribution company started in 2005 and was shut down three years later is reopening its doors with founder Bob Berney at the helm.

Berney will serve as CEO and Jeanne Berney will serve as president of the re-launched company, which will continue to be based in New York.

Berney, who recently acquired the trademark and logo from Warner Bros said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be back in business under the Picturehouse banner. We worked very hard to build it into a brand known for acquiring exciting, challenging and entertaining films from the US and around the world, and helping them find their audiences.”

Picturehouse‘s first new release will be ‘Metallica Through The Never‘, a film starring members of the iconic rock band and Dane DeHaan. DeHaan plays a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. The film, written and directed by Nimród Antal is due in theaters on 9 August. One of the bestselling rock acts of all time, Metallica has sold over 105 million albums worldwide.

Berney said, “Nim and the band have made a film that really captures the spirit of Metallica and their millions of loyal fans. “It‘s an entertaining genre film with a concert inside it, a fun ride featuring an exciting young actor, Dane DeHaan . It‘s a very cool project to reboot Picturehouse with.”

Metallica drummer and founding member Lars Ulrich said,: “Metallica‘s way of doing things is to jump into unexplored creative endeavours with no safety net whatsoever. Putting this movie together for the last couple of years has been a pretty wild ride, and we‘ve definitely done our share of flying without a net! Bringing Bob and Jeanne and the new Picturehouse team in at this point provides us with a much needed level of security for the distribution of the film. Their spirit of independence and desire to work outside the box is something we can relate to in every way, and this makes them both a welcome addition and a natural fit in the Metallica family.”

Picturehouse will acquire, market and theatrically distribute independent films from the US and around the world. The company expects to release two or three films this year, increasing its output to four or five in 2014 and six or seven in subsequent years.

The company recently signed an exclusive, multi-year output deal with Netflix. Picturehouse films will come to Netflix exclusively in the US shortly after theatrical release.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “Bob and Jeanne are legendary tastemakers and innovators who were early partners with Netflix in bringing amazing movies like ‘Pan‘s Labyrinth‘ and ‘La Vie en Rose‘ to our service. Netflix members love independent films and the Berneys have indisputably great taste.”

In addition, Picturehouse has secured a first look relationship with Warner Bros. Pictures International for films to which it has international distribution rights.

Berney headed the company when it was originally formed in April 2005 as a joint venture between HBO and New Line Cinema. Under his leadership, Picturehouse acquired and released films as Guillermo del Toro ‘s ‘Pan‘s Labyrinth‘ (winner of three Academy Awards); Olivier Dahan ‘s ‘La Vie en Rose‘ (winner of two Academy Awards, including best actress for Marion Cotillard); Sergei Bodrov ‘s ‘Mongol‘ and Robert Altman ‘s ‘A Prairie Home Companion‘. When Time Warner folded the operations of New Line and Picturehouse into the Warner Bros. family, the brand continued to live on through the home entertainment and television releases of the films.

Berney, who has founded and operated independent film distribution and marketing companies has overseen the U.S. theatrical releases of blockbusters such as ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding‘ and ‘The Passion of the Christ‘ as well as.
