Can Reed Hastings Netflix the skiing business?

Ted Sarandos and he totally and irreversibly changed how video is consumed with their streaming service Netflix. Forever. Now Reed Hastings is putting his best forward into the skiing business in the US, according to a feature in The New York Times.

The 63 year old billionaire plonked an undisclosed sum to buy a controlling interest in Powder Mountain a skiing area in the north east patch of Utah.  The mountain receives close to 360 inches of snow each winter season which makes It a snow lovers delight. Summit, the owners of the mountain – one of the few private ones in the US (most of the rest are leased from the US Forest Service or are on a mix of private and publicy owned land) – had struggled to make a profit despite grandiose plans. Hastings a -an avid skier and snowboarder – jumped at the chance and put down $100 million of his own money and bought the 8,646 acre skiing property in September 2023. He followed that up by acquiring another 2,400 acres adjacent to the skiing area in March 2024.

Hastings plans to spruce up PowMow (as Powder Mountain is locally called) by installing four chair lifts, building two day lodges with restaurants, private rentals, retail stores and a 40,000 square foot lodge with a state of the art spa.

2,000 acres of this would be made private, he announced. An enclave at the top would host homes which would be sold at upwards of $2 million each. These would also carry an annual membership fee of between $30,000 and 100,000, which would give homeowners exclusive access to the private skiing area, apart from the 2,400 acres he acquired recently.

The rest of the mountain which would be left open to the public, will cost skiers $1,399 for a season pass (as against $1,259 previously), seniors above 75 years  $1,049 (as against free). Additionally, there would be no limit on the membership numbers as has been the practice so far. The public area is slated to be opened in 2025.

Hastings told The New York Times that his move into the skiing business is not a CSR activity.

“I’m investing a lot of my money in Powder Mountain but my plan was never to subsidise it,: he said. “…I never saw this as a charitable endeavor. We are building a luxury experience on the private side of the mountain…We decided we needed to lure people here by offering a private experience they can’t get anyplace else..”

And no one knows better than him about providing experiences, especially if you consider how he transformed a movie rental business into one of the most valuable media and entertainment business globally.

Netflix lights up the sky with 1,000 drones to reveal ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’

Mumbai: The trending hashtag #HeeramandiKabReleaseHoga (when will Heeramandi release?) has an answer, at last. In a mesmerizing aerial spectacle above Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Race Course, Netflix and renowned director Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced that Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar premieres on 1 May.

Together, they marvelled as a fleet of 1,000 drones took flight, leaving onlookers spellbound. As the anticipation reached fever pitch, the drones unveiled the series’ launch date, igniting waves of excitement among the gathered crowd.

On the eve of the date announcement, creator-director Bhansali said, “I am grateful to the entire team for their relentless passion and dedication to bring the world of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar to Netflix. Airtel’s Sunil Mittal welcomes Reliance-Viacom-Disney Hotstar merger

MUMBAI: The merger between Reliance Jio, Viacom18, and Disney Star India has stunned many in the media and entertainment industry, considering its scale and size, creating a media monolith in its wake.

But one person who is taking it in its stride is Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Mittal. In a conversation with CNBC TV18’s Shereen Bhan early this morning he said: “We are a telecommunications company. We are not in the business of content. We welcome the merger.”

What this means is that speculation that Bharti Airtel might hare off and make some acquisitions in the content creation space can well be dustbinned following Reliance’s  skilful move of partnering with two global content giants.

Mittal added that Bharti Airtel has been carrying every OTT and broadcaster – Netflix, Star, Hotstar, Prime Video, Jio, MX Player, Aha – for some time now. “We will continue doing so in a non-discriminatory manner,” he revealed.

He, however, ended his statement with a note of caution. “We hope that even they will do so in a non-discriminatory manner,” he said.

  • Netflix to take a bold step by broadcasting WWE Raw next year

Netflix to take a bold step by broadcasting WWE Raw next year

Mumbai: According to a new media report, Netflix will start streaming the WWE program as part of their collaboration with TKO Group Holdings. From the next year, Netflix strategically collaborated with TKO Group Holdings. According to media reports, the regulatory filling company mentioned the tenure of an alleged deal for 10 years valued at $ five million.

Netflix will air ‘ Raw ‘ as part of a special program. Netflix also has the option to terminate the deal after 5 years and can extend the deal as part of future decisions. Netflix also has exclusive broadcasting rights in the US, Latin America, Canada, Uk.

According to the latest media reports, Netflix has decided to amplify revenue by cutting subscription prices. For that purpose, Netflix decided to support ad-tier membership plans. It will be the first time, Netflix broadcasts live sports and WWE programs. The company also estimates viewership potentially increases by leveraging its user base.

In the last few days, OTT platforms decided to expand their viewership across the globe. To make it commercially successful many OTT platforms are started with an Ad supported revenue model. As a part of covering cost exercise, this model has also worked to face stiff competition in OTT platforms.

Giants like Amazon (Amazon miniTV) also have many Indian OTT platforms like Aha, Zee 5, and many others rolled out such plans earlier. Netflix is considered a premium entertainment app and generally, it is believed that Netflix costs more compared to other OTT subscription plans worldwide.

To enhance financial strength Netflix started to support ad tier membership plans. This will be a mutually beneficial coalition between Netflix and TKO group holdings. Earlier Netflix was focused on original GEC content including web series, movies, and documentaries.

Now taking one step further, Netflix elevated its commercial base by introducing such live sports streaming on its platform. As per media sources, Netflix also plans to develop new content that is in line with and similar to WWE sports.

According to many industry experts, advertising-based videos on demand (ADOV) will grow faster in the upcoming two years. These ad-supported models provide economies of scale benefits to the platform simultaneously with existing audiences on particular OTT platforms getting access to sports content. This move helps larger popular sports broadcasters like WWE to secure better viewership.

As an aggregator platform for national, and international content, this proactive step taken by Netflix can encourage other OTT players to upgrade its offerings.

According to media reports, Netflix can also become a favorite stop destination for WWE shows like SmackDowns, NXT, and Wrestle Mania. The paradigm shift of Netflix from GEC to a Sports streaming platform lies in commercial factors.

Lastly, Netflix is estimated to secure a position to ensure sports broadcasting which will cater predominantly to Gen Z and Sports fans worldwide.

Films featuring theatrical stars dominate the list. Seven out the top 10 films of 2023 on Buzz are from Netflix.

Only four International properties managed to touch the 15 per cent mark on Buzz in 2023. Seven properties on this list are from Netflix, indicating the strength of their international slate compared to other platforms.

Mission Majnu (Netflix), followed closely by Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai (ZEE5), is the most-liked direct-to-OTT film of 2023.

Except for Money Heist (S4 & S5), Loki S2 is the second most-liked International show till date (since the start of tracking in 2020). The top 10 list features shows from a variety of genres and languages.

Extraction 2 emerged as a break-out success in terms of its audience likeability, being the only International direct-to-OTT film to cross the 75 mark, 10 points higher than the second position on the list.
