    SPN acquires exclusive broadcast and digital rights for 2016 Copa America Centenario in India

    MUMBAI: Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) has acquired the exclusive broadcast and digital rights to telecast the 2016 edition of Copa America Centenario in India and the Indian sub-continent (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka). This year’s tournament being held in the United States of America from June 3 to June 26 will be telecast live and exclusive on Sony ESPN and Sony ESPN HD channels.

    As part of the rights package, the network will air all 32 matches of the tournament played across 10 venues in the United States. In addition to the live coverage, Sony ESPN channels will also broadcast the highlights of matches during the tournament. On the digital front, consumers will be able to livestream all the matches on Sony LIV.

    The Copa América Centenario is a historical once-in-a-lifetime event celebrating 100 years of the Copa América and is a special edition between the usual four-year cycles of the Copa América tournaments. For the first time since its inception, the tournament will be held outside of South America and feature the top star players from North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean like Lionel Messi (Argentina), Luis Suarez (Uruguay) Javier Hernandez (Mexico) and James Rodriguez (Colombia) to name a few.

    The Copa América Centenario is anticipated to make history with some of the biggest encounters in football. Top international teams like Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Columbia, and more will face off each other on the field, all playing for the coveted trophy specially designed for the tournament.

    New Delhi: Lemon Pvt Ltd  (LPL) bagged a silver award in the prestigious Flame Awards Asia 2016 under Integrated Marketing Campaign for Dabur’s “Real School of Nepal”.     MUMBAI: Discovery Channel is all geared up to premiere a tale of international trains connecting Indian, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. The series titled as India’s Frontier Railways will premiere on 11 February 2016 and will air every Thursday at 9 pm.

    The three-part series explores the journey of passengers on the international trains through their heart-warming stories of reunion, cultures, history and travel across borders.

    Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific EVP and GM-South Asia Rahul Johri said, “Discovery Channel is delighted to present the incredible history of India’s cross border trains and their significant role in connecting the people and the nations. The audience will have a heart-warming viewing experience as they will get the opportunity to watch the three trains traverse through India’s borders in Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh.”

    The one-hour long episode will offer viewers a first-account narration of people whose work, travel and lives are entwined with these international trains

    The first episode is on Maitree Express, which connects India and Bangladesh, taking 12 hours to make the 392 km journey from Kolkata to Dhaka. On both sides, people speak the same language, share a history and they all love fish. The episode will take the viewers through a journey that unites Bengal.

    The Last Train in Nepal will showcase the train that crosses the border between India and Nepal along a line that runs for 20 miles from Janakpur to the Indian junction of Jaynagar. It will also reveal how the line is now under threat of closure following a starvation of funds from the Indian government, which has left the train and the track in a state of disrepair. This episode will showcase the community alongside the border and railway workers who are struggling every day to keep their train and their hopes alive.

    The third episode of the series is on The Samjhauta Express, a unique and heart-warming film that reconnects families, cultures and history. Viewers will get to see Bilal and his father who are seeking medical treatment in India, along with hockey champion Rahat Khan who is travelling to play an international match. This episode will also highlight on Guru Nanak’s birthday wherein the railway runs special train across the border to the Guru’s birthplace in Pakistan.

    Sony Kix acquires LaLiga rights; strengthens position in football broadcasting

    MUMBAI: Scoring a hat-trick in the sports broadcasting industry, Sony Kix has acquired the telecast rights to LaLiga, the premier division of the Spanish football league system, for a period of three years.

     

    It may be recalled that the channel recently acquired and added the telecast rights of the FA Cup and the Serie A to its line-up of prime football properties.

     

    The broadcaster will exclusively telecast the league across India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives through the three-year deal.

     

    With this addition to its line-up of flagship sports properties, Sony Kix will look at consolidating its position as the home of international and club football across the Indian sub-continent. The league hosts some of the biggest names international and club level football like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Antoine Griezmann, Neymar, Gareth Bale and Luis Suárez amongst many more.

     

     Speaking on the development Sony Six and Sony Kix business head Prasana Krishnan said, “We are extremely thrilled to be associated with this pre-eminent league and this move opens up a bold new chapter in our operations as we go on to spearhead the football-led genre in our industry.     MUMBAI: Broadcast technology and solutions company Exset has announced two key international appointments.

    Hema Suri joins the company as director of business development for Strategic Markets, concentrating on Africa and the CIS countries. Meanwhile, Rahul Agarwal has joined Exset as a product manager for set-top boxes (STB) and is focusing on Asian and African markets.

    The appointments reflect continued expansion of the company in 2013, particularly for its Digital Monetisation System (DMS) and its vital ability to counteract the digital divide in emerging markets and empower populations via the TV screen.

    Exset CEO Alex Borland said, “We are pleased to welcome both of these key talents to Exset as the company continues to expand its business in emerging markets. Their experience is invaluable, helping Exset’s customers to take advantage of digitization and to be able to monetize pay-TV networks where previously impossible”.

    Suri’s most recent role has been with BBC Worldwide Channels as regional manager for North India, including Pakistan and Nepal. Prior to that, Suri worked with Logic Eastern, a set-top box, middleware and head-end provider.

    Agarwal brings with him experience of working with broadcast companies including BSkyB and Channel 4 in the UK.

    Anil Kapoor’s docu bags Gold at New York fest

    MUMBAI: Anil Kapoor‘s documentary film on human trafficking in India entitled Trapped By Tradition recently won the Gold Prize in the ‘Cultural Issues’ category at the New York Festival’s International TV and Film Awards 2012.

    “The awareness generated through such documentaries is important for combating this serious global issue,” Kapoor has reportedly said.

    “The focus was never about getting an award; it was about spreading awareness; 2,000 women have already been rescued from modern-day slavery (directly or indirectly) as a result of this initiative,” he added.

    The silver prize was awarded to a documentary that focusses on trafficking in Nepal by Demi Moore.

    It may be noted that Kapoor is an ambassador for The Freedom Project , an organisation working to eradicate slavery and human trafficking.

    South Asian filmmakers team up for film on human trafficking

    MUMBAI: Leading film producers from South Asian countries have decided to join hands and make a feature film on ‘human trafficking‘, a major issue afflicting their countries.


    An agreement for making the film was signed by South Asian Foundation, which organised the festival, Impress Telefilms, a big production house of Bangladesh, Roya Films of Afghanistan and Bhutan‘s Karma Dekhi Productions.
     
    Besides production houses from Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have also evinced keen interest to fund the movie.


    The film is to be directed by Rakesh Mehta whose debut film Khudakhushi had words of praise from critics of several international festivals last year.


    Khudakhushi was a story about two Muslim youths who get involved in terrorist activities but by the time they realise the gravity of the crime they are involved in, it is too late for them to come out of it.


    The just announced film will go on the floors early next year and not only the cast but also the locales will cover the South Asian countries.
