This Republic Day, watch the World Television Premiere of ‘Saaho’ on Zee Cinema

MUMBAI: All set to up the ‘JOSH’ this 26 th January is the World Television Premiere of the biggest action blockbuster of the year ‘Saaho’. Directed by Sujeeth, Saaho showcases a power struggle amongst the crime lords to rule over the underworld. This action entertainer gives the audience an opportunity to see the Bahubali superstar Prabhas step away from his royal prince avatar to don the role of a swanky undercover agent. With a gripping storyline and hair-raising action sequences, this movie marks the debut of Prabhas in Bollywood opposite the stunning Shraddha Kapoor. The movie also features Chunky Pandey, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Jackie Shroff in crucial roles. So, this Sunday, get ready to witness the ultimate battle between the underworld and police with the biggest action thriller of the year ‘Saaho’ at 8 pm only on Zee Cinema.

Saaho ropes in some of the best names in the industry like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Guru Randhawa, Tanishk Bagchi and Badshah to create a fabulous jukebox for the movie. With songs such as Psycho Saiyaan, Enni Soni, Bad Boy, and Baby Won’t You Tell Me, the music album of
Saaho went on to be a chartbuster. Comprising of a catchy dance number like Psycho Saiyaan, to including Enni Soni which was labelled ‘the love anthem of the year’, to the beautiful diva Jacqueline Fernandez grooving to Bad Boy; Saaho’s music album made sure listeners had the songs on loop.

Commenting on the action sequences in the film, Prabhas said,  "While the action element is high in Saaho, the movie is more about doing it with style. We set the bar high as a target and wanted to achieve it with the level of action scenes and VFX. While Hollywood has done it many times in the past, we wanted to be the first to do it for an Indian audience. So, we made a film that is new and technologically advanced and I hope that the audience watches and loves the movie when it premieres on Zee Cinema."

Elaborating on her experience in Saaho, Shraddha Kapoor said, “Saaho is my biggest grosser till date and I am cherishing every bit of it. I feel like I am on top of the world as all our hardwork paid off. My experience of working with team Saaho was great and a memorable one. It was an honor for me to work in this film as it was my first multi-lingual film and I am glad I was chosen for it. I am really excited about how it’s going to reach a larger audience through the World Television Premiere on Zee Cinema. Hope everybody enjoys it.”

Set against the backdrop of Waaji city, Saaho narrates the story of the ultimate battle to gain complete power over the underworld. After the sudden death of Roy – the crime boss of Waaji, Devaraj who is the son of a former don announces himself as the next leader. However, Roy’s son Vishwank foils his plans by inheriting his father’s throne. Amongst all of this, the gangsters try to get their hands-on Roy’s wealth, that is kept in an underground chamber and can only be accessed through a black box, hidden somewhere in Mumbai. On the other hand, a thief (Neil Nitin Mukesh) involved in a series of robbery lands up robbing the black box. This leads to a nationwide man hunt led by an undercover agent Ashok Chakravarthy (Prabhas) along with his team comprising of Amritha (Shraddha Kapoor) and David (Murali Sharma). When the thief is caught, the team is left shocked as they find out the actual truth behind the robberies and stumble upon Saaho.

  • Indu Sarkar…….Who cares!

There seems to be some kind of intent among some filmmakers to please the present dispensation at the helm in India. So, we have a film here which concocts a story around 1975/1977 Emergency declared in India by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi to save her government and her position. This is a women-oriented film, following soon in the line-up of recent failures such as Mom, Mattr and the ilk.

Emergency was a black spot on the world’s largest democracy, India. And, it was a serious issue when the best and bravest of nationalist leaders either went into hiding or were whisked off from their homes at midnight and consigned to jails.

And, when all and mighty of the opposition were helter skelter, running to save their own skin, filmmaker, Madhur Bhandarkar, finds this underdog played by Kirti Kulhari, a stuttering marriage unhappy woman, to take on the might of the authority of the emergency imposing powers. Her inspiration being the character of Anupam Kher, leading an identifiable Hindu right wing group who arouses her conscious and edges her on to lead a move to free the country!! One wonders, why Kher and his group expect a woman to take on the might of emergency while they stay in the background!

There are references and scenes dedicated to the excesses of the emergency era like slums demolitions and forced nasbandi (sterilisation) on young and old alike (Though this was limited to the Hindi belt, mainly to Delhi and UP, and bore no all India effect.) besides strong armed tactics and violence by those ruling. Kirti finds her cause in life when she learns that her husband, played by Tota Roy Chowdhury, being a government servant, is responsible for acts of slum demolitions etc.

Indu Sarkar, the title, has the connotations that Indira (Gandhi), referred to as Indu by those close to her including Moraraji Desai, was the Sarkar, the ultimate authority. But, that hardly adds to the film’s USP.

The Emergency, like many other events such as the Sikh massacre, are a thing of the past and of use only for the sling matches by the opposing political parties. Indians forget and forgive fast.

This is 2017 and this film bears no relevance today and is a futile exercise and waste of resources. Films like Nasbandi (IS Johar) and Kissaa Kursee Kaa (Amrit Nahta), released soon after the Emergency, were disasters.

    Producers: Bharat Shah, Madhur Bhandarkar.

    Director: Madhur Bhandarkar.

Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Supriya Vinod, Anupam Kher, Tota Roy Chowdhury.

  • This one’s the Gags Gang!

    This one’s the Gags Gang!

MUMBAI: One – a gritty drama around the coal mafia of Dhanbad has nothing to do with the other – a laughter riot cooked up by television’s funnies.

We’re talking about Zee TV’s first-of-its-kind ‘variety’ comedy show titled Gangs of Hasseypur  which promises to tickle your funny bone and bears no resemblance whatsoever to its cerebral namesake – Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed film, Gangs of Wasseypur.

As reported earlier by indiantelevision.com, Gangs of Hasseypur is slated for an April 26 premiere on Zee TV. So, at 8:00 pm every Saturday and Sunday, viewers will be treated to a mish-mash of hasya kavis making them laugh at everyday issues or stand-up comics unraveling the real faces behind the big names in cinema, sports and politics.

Be it the unending speculation over superstar Salman Khan’s bachelor (should we say virgin) status or something as everyday as rising prices, the show will see comedians like Raju Shrivastav and Suresh Menon leaving the audience in splits with their witty punches and comic timing. Actor-comic Bharti Singh will add her own brand of madness while divas Mandira Bedi and Tanishaa Mukherjee will step in as Hasseypur ki Haseenayein, upping the show’s glam quotient. Gorgeous and witty Ragini Khanna will host the show. Dabur Glucose-D will be the title sponsor.

Pankaj Saraswat of Laughter Challenge fame will helm this laugh-a-thon as creative director. He says that the show was conceptualized in just 15 days. With the shoot having begun not very long ago on April 14, four episodes have been canned already.

Asked if the jokes on issues ranging from inflation to the serial lack of trust in politicians will be taken in the right spirit, Saraswat says: “We are not attacking anyone personally. We are talking about things that are known to everyone. Everybody knows that Narendra Modi’s wife’s issue has come up suddenly. Everybody knows that Aam Aadmi Party chief got slapped. We don’t have any personal agenda and are not politically biased against anyone. It is more socio-political.”

Referring to a joke about “Neil Nitin Mukesh is menghai ke zamane me teen naam leke chal raha hai” in the show, Saraswat explains: “It is comedy; we are not making the show to hurt anyone’s sentiments. It is not below the belt. We have got a lot of different elements in the show. It is not just stand-up comedians coming, throwing jokes and going but it has got more meat to it like interactive sessions, panel discussions and much more.”

What was it like with the production team having been given just 15 days to put the show together? “We brainstormed on the idea internally and I gave Pankaj a call and threw a bomb saying let’s shoot in the next two weeks. He has his pool of comedians, he knows them, and he knows how to utilize their talents in the best way. And he did it and we would like to improve on what we have done and I am sure the audience is going to just love it,” answers Zee TV programming head, Namit Sharma.

Sharma was confident that the concept would be bang on in an election season in a country where there aren’t too many platforms to showcase comic talent. “If you look at the English comedy, they allow young talent to grow. We have not created enough platforms for comic talent to grow. So I am very keen to do that,” he says.

Going by industry sources, the show costs are anywhere between Rs 15 and Rs 20 lakh per episode.

A media expert opined that the channel has also got the slot timing right for this show. “The channel has made a safe move by not airing the show during a latter slot which has some of the best shows like Khatron Ke Khiladi, Mad In India and Comedy Nights with Kapil,” he says. “The show will get a  thumbs up as far as viewership is concerned, because people who are bored of watching daily soaps have an option to switch to Zee for the new content.”

Despite the competition, Sharma believes that good content always work on television. “There are so many daily soaps that work across channels despite competition. On the same slot many shows work sometimes, so why non-fiction should be treated any differently? People like laughing; then why not?” he says. “It is really difficult to shoot such shows and I am nervous as hell about audience reaction. However, we are trying and we hope it works.”

Ghanchakkar misses the mark even as YJHD crosses Rs 180 Cr at the

MUMBAI: The Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan starrer Ghanchakkar fails to please the audience, with a poor script and execution. The film opened to indifferent response on Friday, it could not cash in on Saturday and did only marginally better on Sunday to end its opening weekend with figures of Rs 19.35 crore.

Raanjhanaa, which marked the debut of the south superstar Dhanush of Kolavari Di fame, has met with mixed response due to its second half. However, the first week collection figures are a respectable with Rs 32.2 crore; the film may benefit due to poor opposition in Ghanchakkar at places other than North where the Punjabi film, Jatt & Juliet 2, is creating a havoc.

Shortcut Romeo the remake of Susi Ganeshan‘s own Tamil film Thiruttu Payale, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta is doing poorly in its first week having collected just Rs 2.5 crore.

Enemmy, Mithun Chakraborty‘s home production starring Mithun, Mahakshay, Suniel Shetty, Kay Kay Menon and Johnny Lever is doing poor business, barely collecting Rs 1.5 crore in its one week run.

Fukrey, a north-centric youth comedy, has sustained reasonably well in its second week adding Rs 10.7 crore to take its tally to Rs 28.2 crore.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani continues to move smoothly in its fourth straight week. The film has collected Rs 7.3 crore in its fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 180.25 crore.
