NDTV’s news biz posts net profit in Q3

MUMBAI: Dr Prannoy Roy-promoted NDTV Ltd’s television news channel business has posted a net profit of Rs 29.8 million for the quarter ended 31 December. This is against a standalone net loss of Rs 16.5 million the company had posted during the year-ago period.

The turnaoround into net profit is, however, without taking into account the merger of different subsidiaries into the company effective 1 April.

With the merged subsidiaries, the company has suffered a net loss of Rs 170.8 million.

NDTV said that in accordance with the scheme, it has given effect to the relevant accounting entries and the financial reorganisation and adjusted the debit balance of profit and loss account amounting to Rs 761.7 million against specified reserves.

“Accordingly, the standalone results for the quarter include the results of operations of the transferor companies and hence are not comparable with the corresponding previous period,” the company said.

NDTV, which operates news channels NDTV 24X7 (English), NDTV India (Hindi) and NDTV Profit (English business), saw a marginal increase in the income from operations (6.61 per cent) to Rs 964.8 million as against Rs 905 million a year ago.

Expenses stayed flat at 902.7 million (from Rs 903.7 million year ago).

The company posted a profit from operations (before other income, interest & exceptional items) of Rs 111.9 million, as against profit of Rs 28.1 million during the year ago period.

On a consolidated basis, NDTV has posted a net loss of Rs 148.4 million, as against a profit of Rs 741.1 million in the year-ago period.

However, it clarified that the consolidated results for the quarter ended 31 December 2009 include the results of operations of Turner General Entertainment Networks India (formerly NDTV Imagine) and its subsidiaries in which NDTV had diluted its holding to a minority stake on 23 February 2010. The consolidated result for the quarter, thus, is not comparable with the corresponding previous period.

Operating loss of the company narrowed to Rs 72.8 million from Rs 525.7 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal. (NDTV had gained Rs 1.28 billion on the buyback amount which got reflected in the other income).

Income from operations stood at Rs 1.14 billion, down from Rs 1.67 billion a year ago. Expenses during the quarter were Rs 1.22 billion, down from Rs 2.22 billion.

  • ET NOW dons new look, changes logo

ET NOW dons new look, changes logo

MUMBAI: ET Now, the English business news channel from Times TV Network, has unveiled its new logo and look.

The new logo has fresh, rich and deep colours. Also, the new “improved” on-air look will allow ET Now to utilise more screen space for news flashes, earnings information and stock calls providing more quality information to its viewers.

The channel says that the new graphics package provides the viewers with a better understanding of the stock market trends, stock analysis and market trading strategies.

The ticker and text flashes have been redesigned to better utilise the screen space and provide viewers with all the relevant information. The channel aims to enhance the viewer’s knowledge on market related anecdotes and trade analysis by displaying buzzing stocks along with news flashes, expert opinions and brokerage recommendations.

Also, the channel has introduced a new band at the top of the screen to carry the breaking news, signified by the usage of the “NOW” icon. It will also carry stock and index levels, show the countdown to market opening and other significant events, identify the shows and guests who will be appearing shortly.

All these changes are a process of constant evolution and intend to help viewers make most out of the stock market, the channel said.

The last four-week average market share of ET Now is 18 per cent, according to Tam data for 25+ males, All-India. CNBC-TV18 is the market leader with 47 per cent followed by NDTV Profit with 22 per cent. Bloomberg UTV has a 13 per cent market share.

  • NDTV forecasts faster growth from Q3

NDTV forecasts faster growth from Q3

MUMBAI: NDTV’s first-quarter net loss from news business has widened over the year-ago period as it increased its employee expenses while revenue dipped on absence of political advertising.

The company, which operates English news channel NDTV 24X7, Hindi news channel NDTV India and business news channel NDTV Profit, suffered a net loss of Rs 241.2 million for the three-month period ended June compared to a loss of Rs 23.9 million a year ago.

Income from operations at Rs 670.8 million fell 12.11 per cent, as against Rs 763.2 million in the year-ago period. In the previous fiscal, revenue had jumped on the back of political advertising due to general elections.

“The first quarter has generally not been good for anybody so far as ad revenue goes. Companies are just walking out of recession and there is an air of caution. We expect a slight improvement in the second quarter and better growth over the subsequent quarters. Our subscription revenue for the first quarter has seen good growth,” says NDTV Group CEO Narayan Rao.

On consolidated basis, the subscription income has gone up 22 per cent to Rs 116 million, as against Rs 95 million in Q1 FY 10 on the back of increased DTH penetration.

NDTV’s expenses jumped 20 per cent to Rs 889.1 million, from Rs 741 million a year ago. This was mainly because of personnel cost, increase in marketing expenses and special bonuses the company awarded to its employees.

The rise in personnel cost even without the one-time expense of bonus and gratuity has been sharp over the trailing quarter.

Explains Rao, “We have got to a headcount that is similar to 2007 – prior to our expansion. That is a good development. Besides, salaries had to be corrected after the recession.”

On a consolidated basis, NDTV has narrowed its net loss to Rs 311.1 million, as against Rs 834.1 million a year earlier. However, the previous fiscal included NDTV Imagine financials, which NDTV sold to Turner International, and is thus not strictly comparable.

Income from operations stood at Rs 835.6 million compared to Rs 1.31 billion a year ago, while expenses were at Rs 269.7 million (from Rs 667.7 million).

The company’s lifestyle channel, Good Times, is performing well. “Good Times should be able to do a revenue of over Rs 650 million this fiscal and is profitably poised. The core news business could remain under a bit of a strain unless ratings improve,” says a media analyst who tracks the company.

  • Shivnath Thukral quits NDTV

    Shivnath Thukral quits NDTV

MUMBAI: Barely a month after being elevated as business editor and advisor strategy at the group level, Shivnath Thukral has decided to quit NDTV.

Confirming the development to Indiantelevision.com, a source in the company said, “Thukral had sent to all of us a letter telling about his resignation on Saturday, though nothing has been communicated to us officially as of yet.”

Thukral, the managing editor of English business news channel NDTV Profit, was in September promoted to a new work profile, something which he obviously did not like.

In an official communiqué to the employees, Roy had said, “Radhika and I have asked Shivi to spare some of his time to work closely with the two of us on NDTV’s strategies for new projects.”

Sources say Thukral, who had joined NDTV as a reporter in 1995, had major differences with NDTV Profit’s business and strategy head John O’Loan. He was unhappy about the changes that were brought about in the functioning of NDTV Profit.

Thukral and O’Loan, however, could not be reached for their comments.

A long standing NDTV consultant, O’Loan was recently made business and strategy head of NDTV Profit.

NDTV elevates Shivnath Thukral to group business editor

MUMBAI: Radhika and Prannoy Roy-promoted NDTV Group has elevated NDTV Profit Shivnath Thukral to business editor and advisor strategy at the group level.

Thukral was managing editor of the English business channel of the group since July 2007.

The announcement was made by the promoters in an official communiqué to the employees. “We are happy to announce that Thukral is to have a redefined role at NDTV,” the memo reads.

“We would now like Shivi (Thukral) to take on a new role that will enable him to be more involved with the journalism aspects of the business and not with managing newsrooms,” the mail said.

In his new role, Thukral will work with the promoters on the business strategies for the new projects. “Radhika and I have asked Shivi to spare some of his time to work closely with the two of us on NDTV’s strategies for new projects,” the letter added.

Also, he will be a journalist – available for all NDTV’s channels where he will also do special shows. His major shows like Big Business Battles and other interview shows will continue on NDTV Profit. He will also be launching his own interview-based show on NDTV Profit soon.

Thukral had joined NDTV in 1995 as a reporter.

ET Now edges past NDTV Profit in metros

MUMBAI: ET Now, the two-month old channel from Times Global Broadcasting, has edged past NDTV Profit in the metro markets, the main revenue pull for English business news channels.

As per Tam data for the week ended 15 August (CS 25+, metros), ET Now has increased its market share to 26 per cent, from prior week’s 21 per cent. NDTV Profit’s channel share has dipped to 21 per cent, from 28 per cent.

Market leader CNBC TV18’s share has remained unchanged at 47 per cent among the English business news channels, while UTVi is at the bottom of the heap with a measly six per cent share.

Says Times Global Broadcasting CEO Chintamani Rao, “It is still very early in the life of a channel, but the data for our first eight weeks is trending nicely and we are quite satisfied.”

Last week, ET Now said it would continue to ramp up distribution in some of the key business markets in India.

Meanwhile, in the All India market, NDTV Profit (20 per cent share) is still ahead of ET Now (13 per cent), but the difference between the two has come down to 7 per cent only.

CNBC TV18 is leading in the All India market with a 64 per cent share, while UTVi is lagging way behind with a four per cent share.

CNBC TV18 maintains leadership in Budget-day reporting

MUMBAI: The most important day for a business channel is undoubtedly the budget day and the channels take all measures to grab more and more eyeballs.

This time, the competition among the English business news channels was more critical with the entry of ET Now, the channel from the nation’s biggest financial daily.

However, as per the Tam data for 6 July, the genre remained unchanged with CNBC TV18 retaining its leadership position with 67 per cent channel share (CS 25+, All India), followed by NDTV Profit with 22 per cent share. Meanwhile UTVi and ET Now managed to bag 7 and 4 per cent viewership share respectively.

For the whole week (5-11 July) too, the TV18 channel enjoyed a 72 per cent share, while NDTV Profit had a 14 per cent share. UTVi with 9 per cent share was ahead of and ET Now (6 per cent).

Among the Hindi business channels, CNBC Awaaz maintained 69 per cent viewership while Zee Business got 31 per cent share on budget day as well as during the week under review, as per Tam (CS 25+, HSM).

ET Now channel share stays stagnant; UTVi surges ahead

MUMBAI: UTVi has overtaken ET Now after losing its position to the English business news channel from the Times Global Broadcasting stable in the launch week itself.

As per Tam data for week 27 (All India, C&S 25+), ET Now’s channel share has come down marginally to 5.53 per cent (from previous week’s 5.91 per cent), whereas UTVi, which had 3.98 per cent market share in week 26, went up to 5.67 per cent to regain its third position among the English business news channels.

Among the top two, market leader CNBC TV18 fell to 62 per cent channel share from previous week’s 70 per cent, while NDTV profit upped its share to 27 per cent for the week ended 4 July.

Even in metros, ET Now has lost ground to UTVi. The channel, which edged out UTVi with eight per cent share, lost one per cent in week 27. UTVi, on the other hand, climbed from six per cent share to 13 per cent in the week under review.

CNBC TV18 also shed some of its share in the metro markets to NDTV Profit. From a 67 per cent share in the previous week, it slumped to 51 per cent. NDTV Profit, in contrast, rose from 20 per cent to a 29 per cent market share.

Says UTVi VP marketing Vivek Malhotra, “Last week, what we saw was curiosity sampling for the new entrant.”

Officials from ET Now declined to comment.

More significant, however, will be next week’s data which will reveal viewership numbers for the 2009-10 Budget.

ET Now ready with clearances, to launch in June quarter

MUMBAI: Times Global Broadcasting has received clearances from the government for its English business news channel and will be launching ET Now in the quarter ended June, says chief executive officer Chintamani Rao.

ET Now, which will be competing with CNBC TV18, NDTV Profit and UTVi, is also looking at a content tie up. “We are working on the partnership and the announcement will be made soon,” Rao adds.

The channel will have a staff strength of around 300-400 people and will also leverage the resources of The Economic Times newspaper.

On weekends, the channel will bank upon more of features. “Weekend news on a business channel is a lot more features,,” Rao says, while refusing to divulge the channel’s content strategy.

ET Now’s logo was unveiled by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently at the Economic Times awards in Mumbai.
