    MUMBAI: IBN7 has lined-up special year end programming for its viewers to end this year with exclusive shows.

     

    The special series is titled Saal Kamaal 2015 and commenced from 20 December, 2015 at 7 pm. The series features an array of shows that will take the viewers on a roller-coaster journey through all the news and views that made 2015. 

     

    The 11 day series will cover controversies, serious takes on climate change, crime stories as well as the rise and fall of the inimitable Radhey Maa. Viewers will also get a glimpse of some of the gala wedding events of the year gone by. Horror lovers will be treated to a spine-tingling segment on the supernatural.

     

    The year ender will also see some debate on politics that will focus on the performances and plans of nine key ministers from the Narendra Modi government. The year ender will also see a special show of tarot cards, numerology and astrology show, which will air on the final three days of the telecast.

    First-ever Govt level film festival on disability ends on Int’l Day for Disabled

    New Delhi, 3 December: A total of 40 films including features, shorts and documentaries were screened at the very first government-run International Film Festival for Persons with Disabilities (IFFPD) which ended today with the presentation of awards by Social Justice and Empowerment Mnister Thaawar Chand Gehlot.

     

    Minister of State in the Ministry Vijay Sampla and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Col Rajyawardhan Rathore were also present.

     

    Speaking on the occasion, popular actor Vivek Oberoi said that it was heartening to see that the disabled were being brought into the mainstream in an inclusive society. 

    Gehlot said 500 entries had been received for the film festival which in itself a big feat. In the years to come, the Festival may be expanded to achieve more success and achieve its objective of creating greater awareness about the problems of the disabled.

     

     During the opening day, he had said the Government was taking several initiatives for empowering people with disabilities and one such initiative was the Accessible India Campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, which marks the International day of Persons with Disabilities. This Campaign intends to create a disabled friendly public infrastructure in 50 most important cities to bring the people with disabilities into the mainstream. 

     

    The festival opened on 1 December at the Sirifort Auditorium with the screening of the film Yellow which is a Marathi film directed by Mahesh Limaye exploring a mother daughter relationship and developmental disability and behaviour of a child. . 

    The films include 10 features, 16 shorts and 14 documentaries and have been selected out of 541 entries received from India and abroad.

     
    The Best Director and Best Film in each of the three categories of Films were felicitated with cash awards with the First and Second Runner Up receiving trophies and citations from the Department.

    Best Film (Feature) – (Fiction Feature) – Rs 3 lakh + Trophy + Citation; (Documentary- Feature) – Rs 1 lakh + Trophy + Citation.

    The unique film festival in collaboration with the National Films Development Corporation (NFDC) would also have a workshop on film directing and screen writing etc for children.

     

    Until now, the non-governmental Brotherhood has been organising WeCare Film Festivals on Disability around the year in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan.

    MUMBAI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to improve Indo-Britain relationship is a great development. As Modi said, “UK and India were ‘two strong economies and two innovative societies’ and that both the societies need to aim at better and higher ambitions.”

    It is a widely acknowledged fact that streaming services on television make for easier and zestier lives. But at the same time it is practically impossible to catch up with all the new shows that are aired or launched on all the diverse platforms that are available in the eco-system.

    While Modi tries his best to build a more productive relationship with the UK, we at indiantelevision.com have made our own attempts to sate the binge viewers. These are people who might want to take a break from the oft discussed developments between the two nations, by discovering or going back to the massive bouquet of home-grown television shows from UK which were also visible on Indian television screens.

    Here’s a list of a few TV shows from the UK which were successful in India.

    1. Black Mirror

    Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker’s ground breaking anthology series, is something well and truly out of this world, with the originality and potential to continue      for many years to come. Each episode has a different cast, a different setting, a different reality. But they’re all about the way we live now – and the way we  might be living in 10 minutes’ time if we were clumsy. The anthology shows the darker side of life and technology with each featuring a different social  commentary on society’s increased obsession with modern technology and social media. Black Mirror is just two series old with its inception in 2011. In  September 2015 Netflix decided to commission the third series with 12 episodes on its platform. 

    2. The Jewel in the Crown

     The Jewel in the Crown is a television serial about the final days of the British Raj in India during World War II, based upon the Raj Quartet novels by British  author Paul Scott. The story begins with an unjust arrest for rape, and the consequences of this echo through the series. Questions of identity and personal  responsibility are explored against a background of war and personal intrigue. The series was first aired in 9 January 1984 and was on board till 3 April 1984.

    3. Doctor Who

     Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC from 1963 to 2015. From the sound of the theme tune to the Dalek cries of  ‘Exterminate!’ the show has seen fifty years of rich history, mass appeal and a huge global fan base. The programme depicts the adventures of a Doctor, over  2,000 years old, travelling through time and space in a blue police box and is rarely seen without his companions. The revived series of Doctor Who began  airing in March of 2005, 42 years after the original series debuted, in 1963. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show, a special 3D episode, The Day of  the Doctor, was broadcasted in 2013. It is rumoured that the series will continue to air till 2020.

    4. Downton Abbey

     The series depicts the lives of the Crawley family and their staff in the post-Edwardian era. The show has, over three series, incorporated historical events into  its stories such as the sinking of the Titanic, the Irish revolution and most notably, the Great War and its aftermath, all of which are shown to affect the family  in different ways. The series has won a plethora of awards and by the third series it claimed to be one of the widely watched TV series in the world. On 26  March 2015, Carnival Films and ITV announced that the sixth series would be the last and was expected to air in late 2015, with a final episode, serving as the  annual Christmas special, expected to air on 25 December 2015.

    5. Mind your language

     The show was first aired in 1977 and it prevailed till 1986 on ITV. The comedy is set in an adult education college in London and focuses on English as a  foreign language class taught by Mr Jeremy Brown, portrayed by Barry Evans, who had to deal with a motley crew of foreign students. Three series were made  between the year 1977 to 1979 and the show was briefly revived in 1986 with six of the original cast. The plot shows Barry Evans playing a language teacher  who tries to make a living by teaching English to immigrants. With pupils from India, France, China, and many other countries, his lessons do not always go as  planned.

    6. Mr Bean

     his 15 episodic starring Rowan Atkinson was launched in 1990 and ruled the comedy genre till 1995. Mr. Bean, a much loved and widely popular sitcom, is a  grown man who seems to have been literally born yesterday. He gets up to ingenious oddball nonsense every episode while all the time remaining silent. When  he does speak, it’s with a croaky voice. Bean was revived in 2002 as an animated cartoon series. The series, which consists of 63 episodes, expanded the  number of additional characters, featuring Bean’s unpleasant landlady, Mrs. Wicket, and her evil one-eyed cat, Scrapper. Mr Bean has won many awards in the  comedy and light entertainment genre.

    7. Peep Show

     Peep Show is a sitcom starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb. The longest running show on Channel 4 started in 2003 with 9 successful series. The plot lies  between the lives of two young-to-middle-aged men and a flat. Peep Show sounds unoriginal at first, but it is an enduring and eternally humorous show that  brings out the best in two of Britain’s finest comedic talents. The last series of the show was premiered on 11 November 2015.

    8. Pride and Prejudice

     This show is adapted from Jane Austen’s 1813 novel with the same name. It is about the prejudice that occurred between the 19th century classes and the  pride which would keep lovers apart. The 6 episodic was flagged from 24 September to 29 October 1995 starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth  as Elizabeth  Bennet and Mr Darcy and was produced by Sue Birtwistle and directed by Simon Langton.

    9. Sherlock

     Sherlock is a crime drama television series and a contemporary adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven  Moffat and Mark Gatiss, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. The first sires was aired in 2010  followed by the second series in 2012 and the widely viewed third series in 2014. Production of series 4 is expected to start in 2016 with a launch planned in  2017.

    10. Top Gear

     This British television series is all about motor vehicles, primarily cars, and is ranked as one of the most widely watched factual television programme in the  world. Top Gear began in 1977 as a conventional motoring magazine programme, but over time, and especially since a re-launch in 2002, it has developed a  quirky and humorous and sometimes controversial style. Top Gear started with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James Dawe talking about everything  car-related with each finely crafted episode with good cinematography, music, commentary and choice of subject matter. The twenty third series of Top  Gear will be hosted by Chris Evans and will go on floors in 2016.

    Film artists and intellectuals march to Rashtrapati Bhavan, decry charges of India becoming intolerant

    New Delhi, 7 November: A large number of filmmakes, intellectuals and artists led by vetran actor Anupam Kher – who had earlier questioned the logic of returning awards – today marched in Rajpath to Rashtrapati Bhavan to counter the protests by those who have been alleging “rising intolerance”.

     

    Kher said the “award-wapsi” campaign was to defame the country by projecting a “wrong” picture of the situation.

    A small delegation which also included Madhur Bhandarkar and some others presented a memorandum in this regard at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also meeting a small delegation this evening from amongst those who came for the march.

     

    “India is a very tolerant country. Some people have coined the term ‘growing intolerance’. They are very few. Not every Indian thinks like that. We are secular people. We do not believe in pseudo-secularism, selective outrage or selective patriotism,” Kher, whose wife Kirron is a Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament. 

     

    “We had a meeting with a lot of writers, artistes, filmmakers and they also believe that there is no intolerance in the country… This march is a symbolic gesture on part of a lot of people over here who say India is one and free of intolerance,” the 60-year-old said.

     

    Many filmmakers and artistes from the fraternity including Madhur Bhandarkar, Ashoke Pandit, Priyadarshan, Manoj Joshi, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, actor-director Bijoya Jena and writer Madhu Kishwar joined the march to hand over a memorandum signed by more than 40 personalities including actress Raveena Tandon.

     

    Bhandarkar, a National Award winner, alleged that those involved in the protest over intolerance had opposed Prime Minister Narendra Modi before he was elected, which raised questions about their intention.

     

    Kher asserted that they were not associated with any organisation or political party. “This march is led by Indians and for Indians.”

     

    Film-maker Priyadarshan said the act of returning the awards is “childish”. He said these people should use the power of pen. Instances of intolerance have always been there. It is not something that happened yesterday. 

     

    Shah Rukh Khan never said he is returning his award, Priyadarshan said, but he said he disapproved of those critical of Khan who had said that there was extreme intolerance in the country.

    The march also saw some disgruntled voices. Some National Award winning filmmakers and actresses who did not want to be named told indiantelevision.com that tjey felt let down because it was initially meant to be a march of ntellectual National Award Winners and not an Anupam Kher march.

     

     

    At least 75 members of the intelligentsia have returned national or literary awards in an escalation of protests by writers, historians, filmmakers and scientists over “growing intolerance”, voicing fears that the country’s robust democracy might be “coming apart” in the current atmosphere.

     

    The BJP-led government has dismissed the protest as “manufactured rebellion” and “politically” motivated.

    “Nobody has the right to call our country intolerant. We are secular people and don’t believe in selective outrage,” Mr Kher said this morning. “I have right to go to the President and say that we don’t feel India is intolerant. These talks can’t happen only on twitter/ Facebook, they need a personal presence,” the actor has said.

     

    The march follows the decision of a host of filmmakers, including Dibakar Banerjee and Anand Patwardhan, as well as writers and historians to raise voice against the rising intolerance under the BJP-led government and to return various government awards and honors.

    MUMBAI: Chinese cross-platform internet video service LeTV has set its sight on the Indian market and plans to launch here by early 2016.

     

    Apart from introducing its mobile devices to the Indian market, the company is also looking at replicating its content-device ecosystem in India and offer a new entertainment based experience. The company is keen to provide Indian consumers with local entertainment-based content. To this effect, LeTV is in search for local partners in India, who are active in the content creation business. 

     

    This was announced by LeTV founder Jia Yueting in Beijing at the launch of the company’s new smartphone – Le 1S.

     

    LeTV said it is also mulling setting up production lines and R&D centres in India as a long-term vision. This could be seen as a welcome move by the Narendra Modi led Indian government, which has been pushing the ‘Make In India’ premise to international companies. 

     

    Earlier in April, Letv had launched three smartphones, which will soon see its release in the US. The company is also in talks to start shop in the US this financial year. The company, which has interest in varied businesses, is alsomaking a huge 120-inch 3D 4K TV as well as a smart car in partnership with Aston Martin.

    MUMBAI: With an aim to expand its Indian localisation strategy as well as furthering its interest and association in sporting events, Chinese multinational manufacturer of smartphones Vivo has set sight on the Indian market field in a big way.

     

    As was reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, Vivo hit a six by grabbing the title sponsorship for the multi-million dollar cricket tourney – The Indian Premiere League (IPL) for a period of two years. The move came in the wake of Pepsi withdrawing its title sponsorship deal.

     

    This is Vivo’s first and so far the largest brand association since its launch in the Indian market. With 2015 being Vivo’s 20th anniversary and the first anniversary in India, the company sees Vivo-IPL making the throttle of its development even stronger.

     

    In the coming two seasons (2016 and 2017), Vivo and IPL will have extensive cooperation in terms of sports events, on-ground activations, media exposure and marketing campaigns.

     

    As a brand, Vivo has shown great interest in sports and had sponsored NBA’s live broadcasting in China last year. With an aim to enhance its brand awareness and reputation as well as get closer to its potential customers in the vast Indian market, Vivo will be utilising the IPL medium to the hilt over the next two years with a major marketing push. The Chinese company plans to launch 360 degree marketing campaigns, which will include athlete endorsements, television commercials (TVCs), venue advertisements, on-ground activation, digital and social media campaigns and fan meetings amongst others.

     

    Vivo Mobile India CEO Alex Feng said, “We always believe in supporting new talents and associated ourselves only with premium events globally. This investment reiterates how important Indian market is for us, and we are confident that Vivo will get returns from our investment in IPL, and this association will further advance our Love India, Love Vivo initiative.”

    BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said, “IPL is all about opportunities and exhibition of talent and with Vivo coming in as the title sponsor, it is yet another initiative to showcase a brand, which is young, full of life and looking for a platform to showcase its talent. Just like the IPL, Vivo in a very short span have created a niche and legacy in the smartphone market and I am sure this will be a long and enriching affiliation for both the stakeholders.”

     

    Speculations were rife that in the light of the match fixing controversy, which led to Pepsi pulling out of the IPL title sponsorship, the sponsorship rates might drop. However, Thakur informed that the IPL was still a coveted property in the eyes of many a brands. Thakur says that Vivo was not the only brand, which had bid for the IPL title sponsorship and that there were four brands, which were interested in coming on board as the title sponsor for the IPL and another three (apart from Vivo) were still interested in coming on board via different associations.. 

     

    Starting from 2014, Vivo initiated its global expansion including India. The company’s association with IPL is a strong sign of its ambition of the long term development in India. Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative also resonates with Vivo’s plan. Its assembly unit in Greater Noida is the first step toward this commitment. With Rs 125 crore first-phase investment, this unit will be operational in November, 2015.

     

    The company employs 8,000 people in India and has associated with over 10,000 retailers, in over 300 cities in 22 states, with a strong focus on Hi-Fi Music.     NEW DELHI: All India Radio and television channels came in for praise for different reasons by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his monthly Mann Ki Baat broadcast today.

     

    Modi was particularly grateful that AIR had chosen to translate his broadcasts in regional languages with radio announcers reading them out on the same night at 8 pm from different regional kendras all over the country.

     

    “I know it is not my voice, but what the listeners hear are my views and I am grateful to AIR for taking this initiative,” Modi said.

     

    He particularly referred to a recording message in an earlier broadcast by a young girl from Kannur Kendra in Kerala and praised the AIR Kendra there for inviting that young girl to award her and take part in a discussion on the subject she had raised. 

     

    Modi encouraged more kendras of AIR to organise similar discussions as this would help increase people’s participation.

     

     

    Modi also praised several television channels for the manner in which they took up the Swachh Bharat Mission and promoted it.

     

    He particularly lauded channels like the India Today Group, NDTV, ABP News, Zee TV, and ETV, apart from several newspapers all over the country for taking up this cause.

       

    He referred in particular to the Clean India awards of the India Today group, which had revealed to him innovative ways in which people were taking up this Mission, and the ageing Ramoji Rao for his enthusiasm through his television channels and newspapers for promoting this cause.

    NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today referred to auctions of spectrum and FM radio licenses to say that information should be given out proactively to the people.

     

    He described the “Right to Information” (RTI) Act as a tool through, which the common man has got not just the right to know, but also the right to question those in power. 

     

    In his remarks at the 10th Annual Convention of the Central Information Commission (CIC), Modi said that the Union Government’s Digital India initiative is complimentary to RTI, because putting information online brings transparency, which in turn, builds trust. 

     

    The Prime Minister called for an end to the silo-approach in the Government. He said administrative processes should be run based on trusting the people, rather than doubting them. 

     

    Modi also said that RTI has become a tool for good governance. He also described how the PRAGATI platform developed in the PMO has become a vibrant platform for monitoring progress of projects.

    NEW DELHI: Doordarshan’s National Channel will be launching a new show called Hunnarbaaz, which is based on apprenticeship training programme.

     

    The 10-part series, which will launch on 18 October, will be telecast at 11:30 am every Sunday.

     

    Hunnarbaaz is a show that spotlights skills and innovations. The show will help millions of young Indians become aware of the various ways in which they can upgrade their skills, become employable and commercially utilise their inventive genius to provide for themselves. 

     

    The Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry has amended the Apprentices Act 1961 to make it more responsive to industry as well as youth.

     

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon the youth to acquire the skills, which could contribute towards making India a modern country.

     

    Modi said he wanted to create a pool of young people who are able to create jobs and the ones who are not capable of creating jobs and do not have the opportunities must be in a position to face their counterparts in any corner of the world while keeping their heads high by virtue of their hard work and their dexterity of hands and win the hearts of people around the world through their skills.

    MUMBAI: Hathway Cable & Datacom is planning to demerge its broadband business into its wholly owned subsidiary Hathway Broadband Private Limited.

     

    The company’s board of directors have given in-principle approval to demerge, transfer and vest the company’s entire broadband business into its wholly owned subsidiary, subject to requisite approvals from the shareholders, creditors, High Court(s), Department of Telecommunications, Stock Exchanges, Securities and Exchange Board of India and other applicable regulatory governmental authorities.

     

    The carving out of the broadband business is aimed at accelerating value creation for Hathway shareholders. The separation will allow Hathway to aggressively focus on the significant growth potential for high speed data and related services in India. Globally, wireline or fixed broadband has emerged as a key driver of technology adoption and overall, GDP growth. India lags most countries including countries in Asia in wireline broadband penetration reaching only about eight per cent  of the potential universe.

     

    Hathway Broadband intends to take the lead in driving wireline broadband penetration in India and become a key player in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative. The company believes that its hybrid fiber coax infrastructure on DOCSIS 3.0 platforms is the most effective and sustainable technology in a price sensitive market like India.
