    ISRO’s PSLV-C35 takes off successfully, Scatsat1 launched

    MUMBAI: It’s another feather in ISRO’s cap. The Indian space outfit seems to be going from success to success. Earlier this morning at 9:12 am, its latest mission the PSLV-C35 lifted off immaculately from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Around 17 minutes later, its fourth stage rocket engine was shut off and it launched one of its passengers, the ScatSat 1 satellite, into its orbit at height of 720 km., to the delight of ISRO scientists.

    Currently, the organization is waiting to fire the fourth stage engine again to send the remainder of its seven satellite payload into their orbit at a height of 670 km, between 11:25 and 11:28 am, according to ISRO updates.

    “This is a challenging two-in-one mission which puts India in a unique league of nations having the capability to achieve two different orbits in a single mission,” ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar was quoted as saying.

    Tweeted Prime minister Narendra Modi: “Moment of immense joy and pride for India. Congratulations to isro on successful launch of PSLV-C35/ScatSat1 & 7 co-passenger satellites.     Digital India: Optical fibre connecting islands to cost Rs 1100 crore

    NEW DELHI: A direct link is to be built through a dedicated submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) to strengthen communication between Mainland (Chennai) and Port Blair and five other islands – Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Havelock, Kamorta and Great Nicobar.

    The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the estimated cost of the project is Rs 1102.38 crore including operational expenses for five years. The project is likely to be completed by December 2018.

    The approval would equip Andaman & Nicobar Islands (ANI) with appropriate bandwidth and telecom connectivity for implementation of e-Governance initiatives; establishment of enterprises & e-commerce facilities. It will also enable the provision of adequate support to educational institutes for knowledge sharing, availability of job opportunities and fulfil the vision of Digital India.

    The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are of immense strategic significance for India. The geographical configuration and the location of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands chain in the Bay of Bengal safeguard India’s eastern seaboard. Provision of secure, reliable, robust, and affordable telecom facilities in these islands is of importance from a strategic point of view to the country and also an important requirement for the socio-economic development of the islands.

    Currently the only medium of providing telecom connectivity between Mainland and Andaman & Nicobar Islands is though satellites, but the bandwidth available is limited to 1 Gbps.

    Satellite bandwidth is very costly and its availability is limited due to which future bandwidth requirement cannot be met solely through it. Then, there is an issue of redundancy, that is, no alternate media is available in case of any emergency. Lack of bandwidth and telecom connectivity is also hampering socio-economic development of the islands. Hence it is essential to have submarine OFC connectivity between the Mainland India and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, being the only option for catering to projected future bandwidth requirements.

    MUMBAI: Interviewing the prime minister of India is no easy task. Even after you schedule one, sharing questions in advance with the PM’s office is a must.

    After two successful rounds of interactions with Times Now’s Arnab Goswami and CNN-News18’s Rahul Joshi, PM Narendra Modi will be interviewed by David Letterman from The Late Show fame.

    While Season One of Years of Living Dangerously aired on Showtime, the series will return on its new home, the National Geographic Channel, and is scheduled to premiere on 30 October.

    Letterman will interview Modi for the first episode of the climate change documentary series, Years of Living Dangerously. In its second run, the show’s producers, Joel Bach and David Gelber, reached out to the host after noticing his particular interest in the environment during interviews with scientists on The Late Show.

    Each episode of the series will see a journalist or celebrity-turned-correspondent examining the effects of global warming and will discuss various ways to curb it. For the very first time, Letterman will travel to India and interview the PM about the country’s energy concerns.

    Apart from that, the show will feature Ty Burrell, Cecily Strong and Jack Black, as well as returning correspondents Don Cheadle, Olivia Munn, Ian Somerhalder, Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron, etc.

    Sir Martin Sorrell waxed eloquent about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Said he: “Modi has made an incredible difference. I don’t know what is with these guys whose second part of their name begins with the M initial. Modi. Argentina’s Macri. They all have done a..Merkel. May (Britain’s new prime minister) maybe.”

    He went on to state that India has supplanted Brazil for the WPP group. “India is very important. We have 50 per cent of the market. We are interested in India because of its population size, GDP growth and also the young population’s growth. Then, the intellectual firepower in India is really strong. If you look at India 25 years hence, and it is going to become even more important. And then there’s the Muslim population. The third biggest Muslim population, probably going to get even bigger.”

    Sorrell also praised the talent he has in India. “Our people are outstanding. People like Srini, Piyush, Ranjan, Tarun, they are absolutely outstanding people. If you could export them from India, or if we had the same quality of people around the world, I could retire,” he said.

    “I only own two per cent of the company; but I am identified with the company,” he responded to a question whether he would retire. “I will carry on as long they will let me. WPP is not a matter of life or death for me, it is more than that. They will carry me out to the glue factory.”

    Ministry begins Rio performance review with an eye on 2020

    NEW DELHI: A thorough review of India’s performance in Rio Olympics 2016 by the sports ministry has begun in the backdrop of the prime minister Narendra Modi announcement of establishing a task force to prepare for future Olympics.

    Sports Minister Vijay Goel has written to each of the athletes who participated at Rio, seeking their suggestions. He has stated that they should feel free to give their feedback. In his letter, Goel has stressed the need for more inputs from performers like them so that the pool of world-class athletes can be enhanced and sports infrastructure strengthened.

    The ministry has also written to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to submit their feedback on India’s performance in Rio and steps needed for improvement. Such feedback will also be sought from the National Sports Federations (NSFs).

    Goel will have detailed meetings with the IOA and the NSFs shortly in this regard. The objective of this exercise is to analyse performance.

    Modi had announced setting up a task force to prepare a comprehensive action plan for effective participation of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympic games 2020, 2024 and 2028.

    The ministry will also take a look at the duties and responsibilities of various members of the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympics with the purpose of making a fair assessment of their role and taking steps for improvement.

    Goel will visit some prominent academies and Sports Authority of India Centres to have first-hand knowledge of the facilities available for training and improvement required. On 17 September, he will visit the Gopi Chand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad where he will meet players, coaches and other support persons. He will also visit the SAI Centre at Hyderabad.
