  • Gustavo Cisneros named Mipcom 2005 Personality of the year

    MUMBAI: Cisneros Group of Companies chairman and CEO Gustavo Cisneros has been named as the Mipcom 2005 Personality of the Year by Reed Midem.

    Cisneros will receive the award during a gala dinner for industry executives on 19 October at the 21st edition of Mipcom (17 – 21 October, Palais des Festivals, Cannes).

    “We are delighted to honor the man who has built the Cisneros Group of Companies into the media giant it is today, not only in Latin America but also in the US and Europe. For over 30 years, Gustavo Cisneros has been at the forefront of Latin America’s economic progress and social development. His efforts and the outstanding success of the Cisneros Group, which he oversees, have helped to increase Latin America’s profile on the global stage, cultivate new industries, and increase access to information,” says Reed Midem CEO Paul Zilk.

    Cisneros said, “I am thrilled to be honored by Mipcom. It is especially gratifying to be recognised for contributions to international television. Crossing borders – not only between nations, but also between cultures and media – is a key element of both my business and philanthropic activities.     The Mipcom Personality of the Year Award was created in 1989 to pay tribute to exceptional careers in and contributions to the international television industry. Previous recipients of the Award include Canal+ founder André Rousselet, CNN founder Ted Turner, Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone, MTV Networks chairman and CEO Tom Freston, News Corporation president and COO and The Fox Group chairman and CEO Peter Chernin, and RTL group CEO Gerhard Zeiler.

  • Diane Robina named Comcast-Sony Networks president

    MUMBAI: Comcast-Sony Networks, a joint-venture between Comcast Corp and Sony Pictures Entertainment, has appointed MTV Network’s EVP of acquisitions strategies Diane Robina as its new president.

    Based out of Philadelphia, where Comcast is headquartered, Robina will report to Comcast programming president Jeff Shell.

    The Comcast-Sony Networks venture is expected to launch standard cable movie channels, utilising Comcast’s distribution platform and Sony’s MGM library as well as the studio’s own film and television catalogue.

    Comcast networks include E!, Style Network, G4techTV, International Channel Networks, Outdoor Life Network and The Golf Channel. The company is also planning a preschool channel based on its Sprout VoD service this fall.

  • Asiasat named best Asian satellite carrier

    MUMBAI: Satellite operator Asiasat was named the “Best Asian Satellite Carrier” at the 2005 Telecom Asia Awards a few days ago.
     

    The presentation took place in Bali, Indonesia. The awards were judged by a panel of telecommunications experts, backed by financial analysis by research company the Yankee Group, on the basis of carriers’ financial performance, market leadership, technology innovation and corporate governance.
     
     

    Asiasat CEO Peter Jackson said, “We would like to thank our customers, partners and our staff for our achievement in outstanding financial results and high quality service. Building on the wealth of our satellite expertise and experience, we shall continue to strive for excellence in adding value to our customers through innovative service offerings and comprehensive customer service. We are putting in place a solid foundation to lead the industry for the long term”.

    Asiasat states that it pioneered regional satellite television and private satellite communications networks in Asia with the launch of AsiaSat 1, Asia’s first privately owned regional satellite, in 1990. Asiasat now operates three pan Asian satellites that provide customers with access to more than 50 countries and regions in the Asia Pacific, encompassing 3.3 billion people.

    In March this year, AsiaSat reported record revenue for 2004 with an increase in net profit and overall satellite utilisation rate. In corporate governance performance, Asiasat was rated as one of the top 10 performers in a survey on corporate governance of 168 Hong Kong listed companies sponsored by the Hong Kong Institute of Directors and conducted by the City University of Hong Kong. In another survey conducted by Institutional Shareholder Services, Asiasat was also among the top rated Hong Kong listed companies in corporate governance standards.

  • Nitin Jain named vice-president ad sales MTV

    MUMBAI: Nitin Jain, general manager of MindShare, Delhi, has quit to join MTV India, replacing ad sales head Abraham Thomas who quit recently.

    Available indiacations are that Jain will be taking up his new assignment on Monday, 7 March. Attempts to contact MTV India managing director Alex Kuruvilla for a comment on at the time of filing this report failed.
