    Sony to launch ‘Kaajjal’ on 9 Oct; ‘Bigg Boss’ coming mid-November

    MUMBAI: The channel may have dropped out of the ratings reckoning, but Sony Entertainment India is now making its best efforts to make a comeback.

    Sony will unleash its big ticket soap Kaajjal, produced by K Sera Sera’s Twenty Twenty TV, on 9 October, whereas the much-awaited Bigg Boss, the Indianised version of Big Brother, is targeting a mid-November launch.

    “We are planning to launch Kaajjal, a daily soap, on 9 October. The schedule and slot details for this soap are yet to be finalised,” Sony COO NP Singh tells indiantelevision.com, while not revealing his plans for Bigg Boss.

    However, market sources inform that Bigg Boss will hit the airwaves by mid-November – immediately after the Champions Trophy gets over. “Bigg Boss will be a prime time show, running Monday through Friday. The show will feature about 15 celebrities and the participants will include Bollywood stars, cricketers and politicians. Bigg Boss will get over by January 2007,” says a source.

    According to Singh, Sony will kick off the Bigg Boss promotions by the second week of October. “The on-air promotions are already on. Now we will be looking at outdoors and the other media platforms in a big way for the second phase of the campaign,” he says.

    The Indian version of Bigg Brother will be Sony’s fourth Endemol acquisition after Indian Idol, Fame Gurukul and Fear Factor India. Reportedly, Big Brother contributes to over 25 per cent of the format owner Endemol’s revenues internationally.

    The Big Brother (Bigg Boss) format requires 10 – 15 contestants living in a house rigged with cameras recording every moment of their lives. The contestants are deprived of contact with the outside world except those allowed by the editorial team. Every week there are tasks to perform, which test their community spirit and team-work. Throughout the series, the contestants are required to nominate two of their number to be voted out of the house.

    Bigg Boss acquires a crucial place in Sony’s gameplan for the coming days as nearest rivals Star and Zee have also unveiled big projects to sustain their performance. To boost is daily 8 pm slot, Star Plus has opted for a sci-fi series, Antariksh. Zee has launched its mega soap project Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann for the crucial 10 pm slot and has Antakshari and Cine Star Ki Khoj coming up next in the pipeline.

    Star One is gunning for huge jump in channel shares with Nach Baliye 2, the celebrity dance show that propelled the channel’s performance in 2005, and a brand new soap Betiyaan apni yaa…Paraaya Dhan. Countering the Star property on the reality front is Sony’s Jhalak Dikhla Ja, the Indian adaptation of the ABC reality show Dancing with the Stars.

    For the time being, Sony’s gameplan has a lot to do with these well acclaimed international formats. It remains to be seen, whether these international properties will be able to drive Sony to a position of strength in the coming days.

    MUMBAI: The much-awaited second season of Nach Baliye 2 is back along with a new line-up of real-life celebrity jodis. Star India will offer unseen content of the show through its mobile platform Star 7827.

    Users will be able to access Nach Baliye wallpapers, themes and animations on www.wap.star7827.com or by sending BALIYE as an sms to 7827, informs an official release.

    States Star Interactive senior VP Viren Popli, “For the first time for any TV show in India, Star Interactive has created content which has not been aired or seen on TV for exclusive consumption on the mobile phone. Mobile subscribers now demand richer forms of entertainment on their mobile phones, and the exclusive mobile content package for Nach Baliye 2 is an aim to give them just that.”

    The release adds that, the special mobile content package on Nach Baliye is available on Star 7827 through SMS, voice and wap platforms. Reliance users can also access the same through Reliance Mobile World, by clicking on the “Hot n New” section.

    The channel has picked 10 grocery stores in the residential localities of each of the 10 Nach Baliye couples (Jodis) to generate excitement in their localities and personalise their popularity.

    The Jodis have made their neighbourhoods proud with posters that have quotes like ‘Malad Ki Shaan Gauri aur Hiten’ plastered across. Branding is extended from the entrance to the interiors and identified areas around the store with special messages highlighting the ‘Jodi’ and their importance of being from that area, informs an official release.

    A contest via personalised couple’s postcards at the stores will involve every customer in rooting for their number one Jodi. The winners of the contest get to watch their favourite Jodi’s perform live in the episodic shoot, the release adds.

    MUMBAI: Star One is all set to launch one more soap to complete its prime time revamp. The soap Betiyaan apni yaa…Paraaya Dhan, slotted for Monday-Thursday 9 pm, will launch in October.

    Announcing the new programming block, Star India senior creative director Shailja Kejriwal said, “We are delighted to bring a whole new entertainment experience to our viewers. With the new season of Nach Baliye 2 coming soon, we are all set to revamp primetime viewing with the two new shows that boast of a combination of intense family and social drama. Paraaya Dhan and Saathi Re will also see fresh content and some exciting new faces on Star One. ”

    Betiyaan apni yaa…Paraaya Dhan is the story of six daughters & one son born into a zamindar family of Neelkanth Chanda Rana. It is the story of a father who rebukes his daughters because for him they are a burden. They have come into his life only want of a son. Krishna, the eldest daughter and the protagonist, is based on Lord Krishna’s character and personifies his depth of wisdom and understanding. A simple, honest and principled girl, she is the balancing factor amongst her sisters. Paraaya Dhan may be considered the story of many a home in India where it is believed that a son will take the family name further and a daughter is Paraya Dhan, says an official release.

    Star One readies its big ticket for 2006 ‘Nach Baliye 2’

    MUMBAI: Nach Baliye, the celebrity dance talent show that propelled Star One to ratings highs last year is back and hoping to again shake up the charts in its second season.

    And as was the case last time round as well, the target is pretty straightforward: achieve the number two position by the end of the year. It didn’t manage it last year and now the challenge is even greater: a totally different market scenario with Zee TV having pushed Sony to third and Star One looking for a way forward from the fourth position.

    And as the circumstances demanded, the second season of the celebrity dance talent hunt property has been summoned one month in advance. While the first season was launched in October 2005, Nach Baliye 2 is targeting a mid-September take-off.

    Agrees Star Entertainment India CEO Sameer Nair, “Last year, Sony was our nearest rival. Now the scenario is totally different because Zee has made a comeback. And the fact that Sony is gearing up to bounce back makes things complicated for us. We will have a tougher market this time. But we are taking it in the positive spirit. It will be good for us because this would inspire us to give our best. Star One needs one or two big drivers to achieve our goal and we are confident of Nach Baliye repeating its success.”

    Point out to him that Star Plus is still well ahead of Zee TV and Nair retorts, “If you can see Zee TV in your rear view mirror, no matter how far they are, you should be cautious. You should be well prepared.”
    Nach Baliye 2 has its original format intact, but with a few minor changes. The show will feature some surprise elements including a special ‘Wild Card round’. At the end of the seventh episode, one eliminated couple among the five would be called back, making the total number of contestants six. According to Nair, there would be an extra thrust on certain reality elements of the show.

    “We had had our learnings from the first season of the show and we want to capitalise on that this time. The contestants have been better briefed this time. Overall, the effort is to present a better product,” said Nair.

    The list of the 10 celebrity couples, who will be ‘dancing it out’ to win the big crown this time is as follows: Narayani Shastri & Gaurav Chopraa, Gauri & Yash Tonk, Shweta Kawaatra & Manav Gohil, Shweta Tiwari & Raja, Ketaki & Rasik Dave, Gurdip Kohli & Arjun J Punjj, Gauri Pradhan & Hiuten Tejwani, Tina & Hussain, Keerti Gaekwad & Sharad Kelkar, Tanaaz Lal & Bhakhtyaar Irani.

    A new set of choreographers will be training the couples and there is a change in the panel of celebrity judges also. Farhan Akhtar, who has been caught up in the production of Don, has been replaced by director Kunal Kohli (of Fanaa-fame).

    Nach Baliye 1 ran as an half-hour show in the 9 pm slot Tuesday through to Thursday in 2005. When queried about the slot for the second season, Nair hinted that the channel might go for the same slot. “We have not decided on the slot yet. But we may go for the same slot as we had in 2005,” he said.

    The promotions for Nach Baliye 2 kicks off today, along with the launch announcement. “We have a 360 degree marketing campaign in store and it will be unveiled step by step in the coming days. We are planning a lot of on-ground activities as well to promote the show. Mini dance events and contests in colleges would be one such activity,” says Nair.

    Nair added that Star is now seriously looking at selling the Nach Baliye format in the international market. “We had a plan in mind to sell this format, which we created. But the focus was shifted to other activities and we couldn’t really execute out plans. But, along with the launch of Nach Baliye 2, we have now decided to take it abroad and we are seriously pursuing our plans,” he said.

    MUMBAI: After 13 long weeks of perspiration, stress, anxiety, anticipation and a whole lot of naach-gaana, the much-awaited NACH BALIYE 2 Finale is here… the two final Jodis Jodi No.8 – Tina-Hussain, and Jodi No. 2 – Gouri-Yash, gear up for the ‘Elaan-E-Jung’, the ‘Nach Baliye 2 Champions’ title.

    The final competition this year will go live and India ki jantaa will vote to choose their most deserving winner of 2006. Live voting on Star One from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm for the final episode to be aired on Monday 18 December.
     

    The solo round will test their individual dancing skills against each other – Tina Vs Gouri and Hussain Vs Yash. A Jugalbandi will see the 2 couples perform against each other to fight for the Nach Baliye 2 title. The judges have applauded, appreciated and have given their verdict but the fate of these two couples is entirely in the hands of the Indian audience!

    This is not all, nostalgia is in the air too. The finale episode will have the eliminated eight celebrity couples come together to enthrall the audience one last time…and compete for the ‘Dumdaar’…’Majedaar’… and ‘Jodidaar’ category of special awards!

    ‘The special episode will be filled with surprise performances by the esteemed jury as well as the hosts – Sangeeta and Shabbir. Watch the gorgeous Malaika Arora Khan burn the dance floor on ‘Yeh Mera Dil’, while legendary dancer Saroj Khan takes centre stage with ‘Man Saat Saumndar all on the 18 December 2006!

    The fun does not end just here, there would be a special ‘Munna Bhai and Circuit’ act by none other than Shabbir and Rajiv Paul promise to make a ‘maamu’ of all the Jodis.
