    Myntra’s new TVC goes viral

MUMBAI: Retail e-commerce giant Myntra’s outdoor apparel brand The Roadster Life Co’s new TV commercial hit the airwaves recently after it went viral on social media over the last week.

This film has been conceptualised, produced and shot by Brave New World Communications – a Bangalore based integrated communications agency, which had been tasked with carving out a niche for The Roadster Life Co.

The film was released on Facebook & YouTube on 27 January and has been received very positively so far. At the time of filing this story, the video was viewed more than 15 million times and shared more than 8100 times. The film was released on TV on 5 February.

The goal was to appeal to a younger audience who value experiences and are tired of the usual tourist spots. The agency’s strategic approach was single-minded: to own roads as a brand platform by positioning them as the most diverse of destinations. The claim is subtly supported by the product’s deep-design interpretation of archetypal roads, from driveable coastlines and broken paths to desert trails and forest paths.

“The challenge was to make Roadster relevant in an increasingly crowded category,” said Brave New World CEO and CCO Joono Simon. “Roadster is a young brand and social media has a powerful part to play – it was important for the commercial to establish a context for sustainable two-way conversation. Creating a sense of scale was also vital – because the backdrop of the great outdoors is our real invitation. Once you accept it, Roadster has an enabling role to play in your life.”

The film is a tip of the hat to those who follow the road to pursue unusual passions. A non-linear narrative stitches together three unique instances: a free spirit collecting his own brand of experiences along rocky coastlines, a ranger on a tiger census making her own trail through the forest, and an intrepid duo braving a desert storm to deliver relief supplies.

The underlying message is a simple one –the road is both journey and destination for those in search of unique experiences.  The recently released film is the first salvo of an integrated interactive campaign for the brand.

  • Flipkart to take app route; says 70-75 % of its total traffic comes from mobile app

Flipkart to take app route; says 70-75 % of its total traffic comes from mobile app

MUMBAI: After taking the only app route with e-tailing platform Myntra, the Bansals are now gearing to make even Flipkart an only app platform by September, 2015.

Online shopaholics will now have to squeeze in the Flipkart app somewhere in their congested phone memory if they want to use attractive discounts and shop from the rapidly growing venture. Customers will only be able to shop from the app as is the case now with Myntra. It must be noted that post going only app way Myntra has witnessed a 10 per cent drop in sales.

In a statement Flipkart spokesperson asserted, “India is gradually transitioning from a mobile first to a mobile only country. At Flipkart, we have been following a mobile first approach and 70-75 per cent of our total traffic is already coming from our mobile app. We are constantly experimenting with various aspects of our service to create the best shopping experience for our users on our app. Meanwhile, we continue to offer both desktop as well as mobile option for our customers.”

Mobile is driving the internet penetration in India and till December 2014, India had 173 million mobile phone internet users. The figure witnessed a growth of 33 per cent if compared to the 2013 analysis and is expected to grow by CAGR 21 per cent from 2014 to 2019.

The key factors that will drive the growth of mobile are:

.  Increasing investments by telecom operators in data infrastructure.

.  Push for favourable regulations from industry bodies.

    .  Falling handset prices.

.  Economic growth of the country and financial stability of middleclass.

.  Increase in mobile screen sizes and quality of display.

.  Improving quality of curated online content.

As per Google play store analysis, Indians keep social media in the top spot in their priority list followed by shopping platforms, when it comes to downloading of apps. With over one billion downloads, Whatsapp leads the tally of most downloaded free apps followed by Facebook messenger. Flipkart is currently placed on the fifth slot, with over 10 million downloads on Android. Its US based competitor Amazon India holds the 13th spot.

In terms of web search google.co.in tops the list of most visited websites in India followed by facebook.com. Flipkart which is speculated to take its website off holds the fifth place over Amazon.in which is placed seventh. They are the only two shopping websites to have a presence in the list of top 10 website searches in India.

At this point of time, India approximately has over 300 million internet users out of which 66 per cent come from Desktop PCs and Laptops, 55 per cent comes from mobile phones (it is estimated to grow by CAGR 21 per cent), and 11 per cent from Tablets.

Android dominates the mobile platform with mammoth 91 per cent market share, iOS holds 2 per cent share where as Windows occupies 6 per cent of the marketplace.

An e-commerce expert said, “The number of smartphones is already higher than number of computers, moreover people spend more time on mobile phone compared to PCs and laptops. Besides that, from an app, wide variety of consumer insights can be acquired which can emerge as an effective factor when it comes to marketing. So there are a lot of factors which signifies the positives of apps and why players are taking the only app route.”

According to the expert, it could be to subtly force consumers to download the app. “It could be that once they reach their target they might have both: the app and the website. They have already experienced it with Myntra. They certainly have a plan which might result in a temporary drop of their sales but in the long run will be efficiently effective.”

India is the fastest growing smartphone market. It currently has over 200 million online shoppers dominated by travel category. The number is expected to witness huge growth as various players are starting different interactive initiatives to popularise the medium in rural India.

Key challenges for Flipkart if they go only app way:

.   Making consumers download the app.

.   Not letting customers shift to competitors.

.   Having adequate backend facilities to ensure smooth running of the app.

.   Making proper use of the acquired consumer insights.

The only app route can also open up opportunities for joint marketing and monetization avenues between the venture and telcos. What remains to be seen is if the only app formula will bring in another source of revenue for the venture.

  • IndiaMart to focus on app; launches new campaign

IndiaMart to focus on app; launches new campaign

MUMBAI: E-commerce industry is estimated to reach $16 billion by the end of 2015, out of which 29 per cent contribution is predicted from e-tailing, giving an opportunity to those in the sector to uncover innovations to grab the biggest bite of the pie.

One of the oldest players in the business, IndiaMart, has launched two new TVCs to maximise its mobile penetration. Echoing its core motto ‘Kaam Yahin Banta Hai,’ the campaign featuring Irrfan Khan emphasises on various aspects which fulfills specific requirements of buyers through its mobile platform.

The campaign seeks to establish IndiaMart as the first port of call for all business buyers. “With ‘Kaam Yahin Banta Hai’ as the brand promise, we wish to showcase the ease and convenience that the platform offers to its buyers, by connecting them to the most relevant suppliers. Targeted at the smart buyers who are looking for a much reliable, quick and effective solution for all their key buying requirements, the IndiaMart app helps shorten the time that they spend in finding genuine and right business partners,” says IndiaMart vice president – marketing Sumit Bedi.

The e-tailer has roped in Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan as the brand ambassador. “Khan’s persona is very much in line with the values of IndiaMart, as the brand strongly displays responsibility and integrity. Moreover, Khan is one of the most celebrated actors of the Indian film industry, having an extremely effective style of communicating messages, by even adding humour, so that a common man is able to establish a connect. We were very confident that Khan would lend realism to our brand and would be able to connect with our target audience and drive the message home,” opines Bedi.

McCann Group has executed the campaign capturing the USP of IndiaMart: convenience – ease of buying. The campaign targets TV, online display and social media. “Apart from mass platforms like TV and online display, social media is an extremely fast moving medium in today’s world and is probably the best way to make your brand be heard. Gaining so much of popularity, we are happy to have connected with a huge set of people on these platforms,” he informs.

E-commerce companies are concentrating on increasing the penetration of their mobile apps for higher growth. So much so, that big players in the space, claim to have more than 50 per cent of their revenues coming in from mobile apps.

IndiaMart app has witnessed over 2 million downloads across all platforms. “The app dedicatedly focuses on strengthening its mobile offering, which is leading to an increased productivity for our users. We see relatively higher engagement on our mobile platform vs. desktop. Yes, we are certainly looking forward to increase the number of app users through a mix of brand and performance campaigns,” says Bedi.

Bedi feels an app is more convenient, giving information on the go which is very beneficial to the buyers across rural and urban areas. Not only that, according to him, app opens the avenue for specific marketing too. “With more insights from user data, platforms like us are able to push customised notifications and ensure extremely personalised experience for the user,” he adds.

But there are challenges too and emphasizing on them Bedi asserts, “From marketing point of view, there are different challenges for brands. For example – on any app store, a user can instantly look at screenshots of the app, its latest reviews and the overall rating. Thus, one needs to ensure that the app store content is optimized for all this and encourage the user to download the app.”

Recent research signifies that e-tailing ventures are aggressively spending to substantiate their app presence and soon they might dissolve the website. Myntra is one such example. The venture recently acquired by Bansals doesn’t have a web presence anymore. When asked if IndiaMart will also take a similar route, Bedi opines, “Growing at an exponential pace, India leads the way in internet usage on mobile in the world (65 per cent users on mobile internet). Smartphones have greatly influenced the consumer buying behaviour. 41 per cent of the e-commerce transactions are conducted via smartphone and the medium offers an immense potential. Though, we are definitely focused on strengthening our app route as we see relatively higher engagement on our mobile platform, but, we will not force our users in any way and will continue to have presence across platforms.”

“We would continue to invest in our product experience and brand to stay ahead. We plan to stay focused on our app route so as to enable users to easily find reliable suppliers in their preferred location with more ease,” Bedi concludes.

The powered by sponsor for the site is Amazon India while the presented by sponsor is Lakme. Other sponsors for the site include OLX, Fiat, Line messenger, Horlicks among others. It has also partnered with Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year, which is set to release on the day after Diwali.

It allows users from across India to try out everyday products through samples at Re 1, play games that are in sync with the cultural moment, stream movies for free and watch great content from the upcoming film Happy New Year.

At the ‘Grand Diwali Mela,’ consumers can also experience gaming via a platform called Centerstage Hungama.com. On this online ‘zone’, consumers can stream two Bollywood films of their choice. A game called Diwali Chakri has been launched exclusively for this occasion. In association with Rummy Circle, it allows users to play with other card game enthusiasts across the country. Gaming hour will be from 9-10 pm and prizes include online offers and merchandise.

Last month, Google stated plans of launching a virtual shopping and entertainment platform by tying up with the media buying agency GroupM. While GroupM is responsible for bringing brands onto the platform, Google provides the technical support.

The website, which will run live till 22 October, invites patrons to try samples for products across various categories at just one rupee each, and to play and win awesome prizes and a chance to hang out with celebrities.
