    New face of the 15th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival

    MUMBAI: As the Bollywood industry unfolds its dynamism, the 15th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival too, organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), and is all geared to sport a revamped look. With a heritage of 100 years and the pace of ever evolving art and industry of cinema, the cultural event eagerly awaited by all has shown tremendous growth in both size and power over the years.

    Creating an altogether new visual identity, the festival which is a Reliance Entertainment initiative represents and rebuilds its strong association with the most important centre of the Indian film industry.

    The new logo by which the festival will be known is an interpretation of the coveted Golden Gateway Award, the premier award recognising the best film at the festival, to give it a familiar and modern feel. Also the new icon will sport Mumbai‘s historic craft, The Gateway of India in a contemporary and edgy rendition. Broadly representing the particular award categories at the festival and also reflecting the diverse cultural mosaic of the financial capital of India, the international festival‘s new identity will accordingly dazzle with an array of colors.

    Filmmaker and chairman of MAMI Shyam Benegal said, “This year we have an exciting new logo that incorporates both the city of Mumbai and the iconic gateway of India.”

    Commenting on the new logo, Festival director Srinivasan Narayanan added, “The festival has evolved into one of the most important film festivals in this part of the world, showcasing the best cinema from all over the globe. The new logo stands for the dynamic and fluid integration of the iconic with progress and evolution which I cannot wait to share with the world.”

    The 15th Mumbai Film Festival will take place from the 17-24 October 2013.

    Mumbai Film Festival to present lifetime achievement award to Zhang Yimou

    MUMBAI: The Mumbai Film Festival will honour acclaimed director, producer, writer and Chinese actor Zhang Yimou with the Lifetime achievement award at the forthcoming 14th Mumbai Film Festival that would be held from 18 to 25 October.

    Considered to be one of China‘s most prominent directors, the prolific director is in the league of select oriental filmmakers who have successfully made a transition to mainstream Western cinema. He has been at the helm of record breaking films such as House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Curse of The Goldern Flower, and Raise the Red Lantern among numerous others.

    Zhang Yiimou has been conferred several notable international accolades including the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes for his film To Live, the Technical Grand Prize for Shanghai Triad, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Film, BAFTA‘s for To Live and Raise the Red Lantern and four different awards at the Berlin Film Festival as well as many others.

    In addition to his cinematic achievements, Zhang Yimou also directed the opening and closing ceremonies for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games in 2008, which received widespread global acclaim.

    The Mumbai Film Festival, an initiative by MAMI has been known to honour cinematic legends who have contributed to enriching the art and craft of cinema in varied capacities. Earlier recipients of this award have been Oliver Stone and Morgan Freeman respectively.

    MAMI fest to screen films by renowned directors of the world

    MUMBAI: The 14th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival, an initiative by MAMI, that will run from 18 to 25 October will include films by some of the most rewarded directors from all over the world which will only enhance the cinematic experience this year. There has been considerable buzz about the films that will be showcased at the Fest.

    Of the many films that will be screened, some of the noted movies that will be shown are: On the Road, Walter Salles, the provocative story of Sal Paradise, a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty, a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner and his girl Marylou.

    Rust and Bone, by Jacques Audiard, a story about Ali who finds himself with a five year-old child on his hands. Sam is his son, but he hardly knows him. Homeless, penniless and friendless, Ali takes refuge with his sister in Antibes where things improve immediately.

    Blancanieves (Snow White), by Pablo Berger a stunning gothic melodrama by the popular take by the Grimm Brothers.

    Patwardhan’s ‘Jai Bhim, Comrade’ bags Best Film Award for Producer at MIFF

    New Delhi: Two films from India and one film each from the United Kingdom and Romania have bagged top honours in the International Competition Section of the Mumbai Intrnational Film Fetival for Documentary, Short and animation films which concluded in Mumbai today.

    The Golden Conch, Silver Conch and other Trophies and Certificates were presented to the winners at the valedictory function of the Mumbai International Film Festival at NCPA in the presence of Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, S Jagatrakshakan.

    In the International Competition, Nitin Kumar Pamnani’s film ‘I am Your Poet’ won the Best Documentary Film (up to 40 minutes duration) award comprising the Golden Conch and Rs 500,000 in cash. Pamnani’s film in Hindi and Bhojpuri is about the poetry of Rama Shankar Yadav ‘Vidrohi.’

    ‘Shape of the Shapeless’ by the New York-based film maker Jayant Cherian was adjudged the second Best short Film with Silver Conch and Rs 250,000 in cash.

    Kim Longinotto’s ‘Pink Saris’ won the Golden Conch for Best Documentary Film above 40 minutes duration. The British film maker’s documentary tells the story of the ‘Gulabi Gang’ which is active in Uttar Pradesh, empowering women.

    The Silver Conch for Best Documentary above 40 minutes duration is shared by ‘Dreaming Taj Mahal’ by Nirmal Chandar and the Russian entry ‘Home’ by Olga Maurina.

    The Golden Conch for Best Fiction film went to ‘Music in the Blood’ by Alexandru Mavrodineanu from Romania.

    Anand Patvardhan’s ‘Jai Bhim Comrade’ won the Best Film of the Festival Award for Producer. The award carries a prize money of Rs 200,000

    Anand Tharane and Krunal Rawal won the Golden Conch in the Best Animation Film Category for ‘Prince’. The film is about a taxi named Prince and how it finds outdated when new sedans arrive on the streets of Mumbai.

    The International Jury Award was shared between two films, Moni Bency’s ‘Mahashwetadevi – Close-up’ and Mamta Murty’s Fried Fish, Chicken Soup and Premier Show dealing with the alternative cinema tradition in Manipur.

    Pankaj Johar’s ‘Still Standing’ has won the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Award for Best Debut film as a Director. The award instituted by the Government of Maharashtra comprises a trophy and Rs 100,000 in cash.

    The Indian Competition Section was reintroduced during MIFF 2012 to promote and encourage the Indian documentary film makers.

    Rajesh Jala’s Hindi Bhojpuri documentary ‘At the Stairs’ won the Best Documentary Film Award fetching him the Golden Conch and Rs 500,000 in cash. The film examines the lives of widows in Banaras seeking Moksha – liberation from the cycle of life and death.

    Ashwin Kumar’s ‘Inshah Allah, Football’ is the second best Documentary winning the Silver Conch..

    Tuhinabha Mazumdar’s ‘Midnight Bioscope’ was adjudged the Best Fiction Film winning the Golden Conch. The film is based on Ismat Chubhtai’s controversial short story ‘Lihaf’ about the sexual awakening of a young girl.

    Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT)’s production’s ‘Journey to Nagaland’ by Aditi Chitre won Golden Conch for the Best Animation Film.

    FTII entry One, Two by Prantik Basu won the Indian Jury Award worth Rs 250,000 in cash.

    Amalan Datta’s film on the unique democratic structure of a remote Himalayan village, ‘One Day Ahead of Democracy’ got the Special Mention Documentary Certificate.

    The film by Anup Satyam ‘A Dream called America’ got the IDPA Trophy plus Rs 100,000 in cash for the Best Student Film.

    In all, 101 films including 41 films in the International Section were in competition during MIFF 2012

    The International Competition Jury was made up of David Bradbury of Australia, Sayoko Kinoshita of Japan, Michael Glawogger of Australia, N Manu Chakravarthy of India and Beena Paul of India.

    The Indian Competition Jury comprised Kumar Shahani, Reena Mohan, B Narsing Rao, Adela Peeva of Bulgaria and Stefanie Dinkelbach of Ireland.

    Greek director Angelopoulos dies in accident

    MUMBAI: Noted Greek director Theo Angelopoulos was killed in a road accident on Tuesday while he wasshooting for his latest film The Other Sea.

    The 76-year old Angelopoulos was working in Piraeus, a port city close to Athens when he met with an accident while shooting outdoor sequences.

    Starting his filmmaking career with Reconstruction in 1970, Angelopoulos then went on to make a series of political feature films about modern Greece: Days of ’36 (Meres Tou 36, 1972), The Travelling Players (O Thiassos, 1975) and The Hunters (I Kynighoi, 1977).

    The noted director was known for his distinct style marked by slow, episodic and ambiguous narrative structures as well as long takes.

    Having won the Grand Jury prize at Cannes Film Festival for Ulysses’ Gaze (1995) and Palme d’Or for Eternity and a Day (1998), Angelopoulos was honored at the 11th Mumbai Film Festival in 2009.

    Mumbai film festival opens to a grand start

    MUMBAI: The 13th Mumbai Film Festival opened yesterday to a grand response, with Bennett Miller’s Moneyball starring Brad Pitt kicking off the event.

    The film was screened on all the screens of Cinemax, Versova, the festival’s main venue.

    Opening the festival, director- producer Yash Chopra lit the lamp along with actress Dia Mirza with President of Film & TV Producers Guild Ramesh Sippy and trustee of MAMI Amit Khanna in tow. Joining them were the International Competition jury members Hugh Hudson (jury president), Jerzy Skolimowski, Na Hong- Jin, Roger Spottiswoode and Sarika.

    Commenting on the occasion, 13th Mumbai Film Festival Festival Director Srinivasan Narayanan said, “The 13th Mumbai Film Festival has certainly begun with a tremendous turnout. We sincerely hope that all those attending will see the effort put behind organizing this popular festival and hope that this year’s selection of films satisfies their appetite of quality cinema.”

    The festival is a Reliance Entertainment initiative, organised by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image.

    PVR Pictures to release The Ides of March

    MUMBAI: PVR Pictures will soon release George Clooney’s The Ides of March in India.

    Based on Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North, the film is set in the near future in the world of American politics during the Democratic primaries in Ohio for the presidential elections.

    It tells the story of a young, idealistic press secretary (Ryan Gosling) who works for one of the presidential candidates, Governor Mike Morris (George Clooney), and despite himself becomes dangerously involved in the ambient deceit and corruption.

    Besides Gosling and George Clooney, the film also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Jeffrey Wright, Max Minghella and Evan Rachel Wood.

    The film, which recently opened the 68th Venice International Film Festival, will be presented at the 13th Mumbai Film Festival.

    Mumbai film festival announces lineup

    MUMBAI: The 13th Mumbai Film Festival, a Reliance entertainment initiative, has announced the lineup of about 200 films that would be screened under various sections films.

    Scheduled to be held from 13 to 20 October, the 13th Mumbai Film Festival aims to showcase the truly global cinema. While Cinemax Versova would be the main hub of the festival, screenings would be held at Metro Big Cinemas and Cinemax Sion.

    While the Brad Pitt starrer Moneyball will be the opening film of the festival, the Morgan Freeman starrer Dolphin Tale will close the festival. Among the films that will have their India premieres would be Melancholia directed by Lars Von Tier, The Whistle Blower, George Clooney‘s The Ides of March and Wim Wenders-directed Pina.

    Announcing the lineup of films, Benegal said: “A feast of films awaits you at the 13th Mumbai Film Festival. We are extremely proud of the fact that Mumbai Film Festival is fast getting recognised to be the best international film festival in this country.”

    Other films will compete for $200,000 under the three competition sections – ‘International Competition for the first feature films of directors‘; ‘Dimensions Mumbai‘; and ‘Harmony Celebrate Age‘.

    Averred Mumbai film festival director Srinivasan Naryanan, “This year the selection committee had its task cut out for them. They had to choose from over 800 films to finally zero down on such a closely competitive lineup.”

    The festival will pay tribute to Shammi Kapoor, M.F.Hussain and Mani Kaul with special screenings of their works. Additionally, a film retrospective of Jury President, Hugh Hudson‘s works including Revolution Revisited and I Dreamed of Africa would be screened.

    Noted poet, lyricist, script writer and director, Gulzar will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
