    MIB directs erring MSOs to immediately furnish seeding data

    Mumbai: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has directed erring Multi System Operators (MSOs) to immediately enter/update their seeding data on the ministry’s MIS (Management Information System).

    As per the official advisory dated 21 February, despite repeated reminders, many MSOs are not entering/updating their seeding data, i.e the number of active set-top boxes on their network, on the ministry’s MIS. The information regarding the number of cable TV subscribers is considered essential for policy decisions/regulatory issues etc, it said.

    It was further stated that failure to submit/update seeding data on MIS will be considered a violation of Rule 10A of the Cable Television Networks Rules 1994 and may result in cancellation/suspension of MSO registration granted

    Rule 10A of the Cable Television Networks Rules 1994, binds, inter-alia, every MSO to give such information as may be sought for by, inter-alia, the central government within such period and such form as may be specified.

    BENGALURU: Indian multi system operator (MSO) Den Networks Ltd (Den) Cable business segment consolidated total revenue (pre-activation) increased 18 percent in in the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter) to Rs 258 crore from Rs231 crore in Q2-16. The company reported consolidated EBIDTA of Rs 34 crore in Q2-17 as compared to Rs 1 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Consolidated net loss in Q2-17 more than halved to Rs 48 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 99 crore in Q2-16.

    Twomain segments currently contribute to Den’s revenue: Cable distribution network segment (Cable, Cable business) and Broadband internet segment (Boomband). It has two other segments – TV Commerce and soccer. Den says that its OTT platform is undergoing tests and will be launched soon. The company says further that it has divested another 25 percent of its soccer business.

    Cable segment

    Cable subscription revenue increased 31 percent y-o-y to Rs140 crore in Q2-17 from Rs115 crore in Q2-16. Cable activation revenue increased 17 percent y-o-y to Rs 32 crore from Rs 27 crore. Placement revenue declined 13 percent y-o-y to Rs86 crore from Rs98 crore.

    The company reported 101 lakh DAS subscribers, of which 51 lakh were from DAS phases III and IV for Q2-17. The company had 76 lakh digital subscribers in Q2-16.Den has a cable subscriber base of 1.3 crore.

    Broadband segment

    Den’s Broadband segment revenue more than doubled (2.6 times) in Q2-17 to Rs 21 crore from Rs 8 crore in Q2-16. Please refer to the figure below for Den’s revenue break-up for Q2-17 and Q2-16.

    The company says that it has added about 25,000 subscribers in the current quarter, hence bringing its broadband internet subscriber base to 140,000.

    Broadband segment’s operating loss (EBIDTA) in Q2-17 was lower at Rs 2 crore as compared to an operating loss of Rs 11 crore in Q2-16 and an operating loss of Rs 9 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    Den’s consolidated total expenditure in the current quarter declined 4 percent to Rs 244 crore from Rs 256 crore in Q2-16.

    Content costs are a major component of Den’s expenditure- Content costs in the current quarter declined 8 percent in the current quarter to Rs 118 crore from Rs 128 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Employee(Personnel) costs increased2 percent in the current quarter to Rs33 crore from Rs 34 crore in Q2-16. Other operating expenses in Q2-17 declined4 percent to Rs 84 crore from Rs88 crore.

    MUMBAI: Indian cable TV major DEN Networks is increasingly getting itself out of the sports den it had gotten itself into earlier. Today, the Sameer Manchanda-promoted SN Sharma-run Goldman Sachs-backed multisystem operator (MSO) informed the BSE that it had divested another 25 per cent equity from its sports initiative DEN Sports in favour of Wall Street Investments.

    The latter represents the business interests of the UAE-based entrepreneur Dr Anil Sharma-run GMS group. GMS is a world major buyer of ships for recycling.

    The price at which the equity stake has been transferred was not disclosed to the stock exchange, but Wall Street Investments holding in DEN Sports has gone up to 80 per cent equity while DEN Network’s has fallen to 20 per cent. DEN Sports controls 100 per cent of DEN Soccer which manages the Indian Soccer League Delhi-franchise owning Delhi Dynamos F.C.

    Wall Street Investments, on its part, has received Registrar of Companies permission to change the name of the two firms to Delhi Sports and Delhi Soccer. And DEN Networks also gave the name change the go-ahead following a board meeting.

    Earlier this year, DEN Networks had lopped off 55 per cent of its stake in DEN Sports to Wall Street Investments at a price of Rs 43.32 crore.

    The cable TV firm has been under pressure from its investors to get back to business basics and monetise better the cable TV digitisation process that India has been going through over the past three years. It rehired co-founder SN Sharma from Reliance Jio as the CEO to get its house in order.

Pre-activation revenue in the current quarter increased 3 percent to Rs 215 crore from Rs 209 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Two segments contribute to Den’s revenue: Cable distribution network segment (Cable, Cable business) and Broadband segment (Boomband).

    Den’s Broadband segment revenue more than tripled (3.55 times) in Q1-17 to Rs 18 crore from Rs 5 crore in Q1-16.

    Cable segment

    Cable subscription revenue increased 13.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 111 crore in Q1-17 from Rs 98 crore in Q1-16. Cable activation revenue increased 69 percent y-o-y to Rs 36 crore from Rs 21 crore. Placement revenue declined 15 percent y-o-y to Rs 87 crore from Rs 102 crore.

    Cable segment reported EBIDTA of Rs 53 crore in Q1-17 as against and EBIDTA of Rs 14 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Please refer to the figure below for Den’s revenue break-up for Q1-7 and Q1-16.

    The company reported 98 lakh DAS subscribers for Q1-17, as compared to 72 lakh in the corresponding year ago quarter and 94 lakh in the immediate trailing quarter (Q4-16). Den has a cable subscriber base of 1.3 crore.

    Broadband segment

    Den reported 329 percent growth in broadband customers in Q1-17 as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter Q1-16. Den reported 1,15,000 broadband customers in the current quarter as compared to 35,000 in Q1-16.

    In Q4-16 Den had a broadband subscriber base of about 95,000, hence quarter-over-quarter (q-o-q) broadband subscriber base growth in Q1-17 was 21 percent. Q-o-q broadband revenue increased 20 percent in the current quarter from Rs 15 crore in Q4-16.

    Broadband segment’s operating loss (EBIDTA) in Q1-17 was lower at Rs 9 crore as compared to an operating loss of Rs 18 crore in Q1-16.

    Consolidated numbers

    Den’s consolidated revenue increased 14 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) in the current quarter to Rs 269 crore from Rs 236 crore in Q1-16.

    Consolidated loss before tax in Q1-17 was lower at Rs 35 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 48 crore in Q1-16. Net loss in Q1-17 was slightly higher at Rs 52 crore as compared to a net loss of Rs 50 crore in Q1-16.

    The company reported positive post activation consolidated EBIDTA of Rs 44 crore for the current quarter as against a negative (operating loss) of Rs 4 crore in Q1-16.

    Den’s consolidated total expenditure in the current quarter declined 6.3 percent to Rs 225 crore from Rs 240 crore in Q1-16.

    Goldman Sachs to pick up 1.58 crore Den equity shares

    As reported, the company’s existing shareholder Goldman Sachs is picking up 1.58 crore equity shares at a price of Rs 90 per share via a preferential allotment. This will take Goldman Sachs’ equity stake in DEN up from 17.79 per cent to 24.49 per cent and involve an injection of much needed capital to the tune of Rs 142.43 crore.

    MUMBAI: The court has convened meeting of Hathway Cable and Datacom Ltd equity shareholders and Hathway Broadband Private Limited and their respective shareholders and creditors on 15 October, 2016, in Mumbai.

    The meeting is for the purpose of considering and, if thought fit, approving with or without modification(s), the demerger of the broadband business of Hathway Cable and its transfer to Hathway Broadband, Ajay Singh, head, legal, company secretary and chief compliance officer, at Hathway Cable, stated in a communiqué to the BSE and the NSE.

    The court appointed Jagdiskumar G. Pillai, Hathway Cable managing director and CEO, to be the chairman of the said meeting. The voting period begins on 11 0ctober, 2016 , at 10.00 am and ends on Friday, 14 0ctober, 2016, at 5.00 pm. Himanshu S. Kamdar, practicing company secretary, has been appointed as the scrutinizer. The results shall be declared on 17 0ctober, 2016.

    The proposed demerger of the ISP Business (defined below) from Hathway Cable to Hathway Broadband may happen upon payment of Rs. 98.05 crore by the latter to the former. The plan is to demerge the ISP Business from Hathway Cable and transfer it to vest in Hathway Broadband.

    BENGALURU: Indian multi system operator (MSO) Hathway Cable and Datacom Limited (Hathway) reported 13.7 per cent growth in Total Income from operations (TIO) and 51.7 percent growth in operating profits (EBIDTA) for the fiscal ended 31 March 2016 (FY-16, current year). The company reported TIO of Rs 2,081.63 crore in FY-16 as compared to Rs 1,831.60 crore in the previous year. The company’s EBDITA in the current year was Rs 388.69 crore (18.7 percent EBIDTA margin) and was Rs 256.16 crore (14 percent EBIDTA margin) in the previous year. The company narrowed its loss in the current year to Rs 163.13 crore in FY-16 from a loss of Rs 180.45 crore in FY-16.

    High growth in Activation fees and Broadband revenue are chiefly responsible for the improved performance.

    The company’s broadband segment has been performing very well, as a matter of fact, among the national level MSOs’ Hathway has the highest subscription and revenue numbers among all of them. Hathway says that it has invested Rs 206 crore into its Broadband business in FY-16.

    Hathway’s consolidated broadband subscribers increased 38 percent in FY16 to 6.272 lakh from 4.558 lakh in FY-15. Consolidated broadband revenue in the current year increased 61 percent to Rs 399.3 crore from Rs 247.5 crore in the previous year. Broadband ARPU in the current year increased to Rs 670 from Rs 530 in the previous year.

    Consolidated reported CATV subscription revenue in the current year declined 3.3 percent to Rs 812.7 crore from Rs 840.3 crore in FY-15.

    The company says that it deployed 22 lakh set top boxes in FY-16, 10 lakh of them in the last quarter of FY-16, and it has 1.06 crore CATV digital subscriber’s (87 percent of its subscriber base of 1.23 crore). Its DAS phase I area standalone Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) in the quarter ended 31 March 2016 (Q4-16, current quarter) increased to Rs 105 from Rs 100 in Q4-15. Its standalone DAS phase II area ARPU in Q4-16 increased to Rs 86 from Rs 67 in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Placement revenue in the current year declined 4 percent to Rs 598.8 crore from Rs 626.9 crore in the previous year.

    Activation revenue almost tripled (2.8 times) in FY-16 to Rs 227.9 crore from Rs 82.4 crore in FY-15.

    Other revenue increased 24 percent in FY-15 to Rs 42.9 crore from Rs 34.6 in the previous year.

    Hathway’s Total Expenditure in FY-16 increased 8.9 percent to Rs 2,072.56 crore (99.6 percent of TIO) from Rs 1,903.38 crore (103.9 percent of TIO) in the previous year.

    Pay channel cost in the current year increased 1 percent to Rs 821.65 crore (39.5 percent of TIO) from Rs 813.13 crore (44.4 percent of TIO) in FY-15.
