    Jim Perry promoted to Nickelodeon, MTVN Kids & Family Group EVP

    MUMBAI: Jim Perry has been named executive vice president, 360 Brand Sales, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. This announcement was made by Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group president Cyma Zarghami and MTV Networks U.S. ad sales president Hank Close.

    In this role, Perry will oversee ad sales for multiple brands across a wide variety of platforms, including Nickelodeon, Noggin, The N, Nicktoons Network, Nick Online, Neopets, the Nickelodeon Magazine Group, and emerging media. Based in New York, Perry will report to Zarghami and Close, informs an official release.

    “In his 15 years at Nickelodeon and MTV Networks, Jim has done an amazing job not only generating new partnerships with clients, but also cultivating a unique relationship between Marketing, Programming and other departments at Nickelodeon Networks to provide our partners with the best 360 degree opportunities to reach kids and families,” Zarghami said.

    “Jim has shown the strategic vision to grow the Nickelodeon services in the kids’ market, and has also unlocked the Nickelodeon value proposition for adult advertisers,” said Close.

    A 15-year veteran at MTV Networks, Perry joined in 1991 as a sales planner in the advertising sales department. In this capacity, he was exposed to all of MTV Networks cable properties — MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon. In 1992, he was promoted to account executive at Nickelodeon. In 1999, he was promoted to vice president of Nick New Business and in 2002; he was promoted to Senior Vice President, of Nickelodeon Advertising Sales.

    MTV ropes in Sony’s Nina Jaipuria as Nick head

    MUMBAI: MTV Networks India, today announced the appointment of Sony vice president marketing Nina Elavia Jaipuria as vice president and general manager for the kids’ channel Nick.

    Jaipuria fills in the position left vacant after the departure of Hema Govindan. Jaipuria would be reporting in to MTV Networks India MD Amit Jain, according to an official release.

    Jaipuria has over thirteen years of experience in broadcasting, advertising, telecom and FMCG. In her previous assignment she headed marketing and communications for Sony Entertainment Television where she pioneered several experiential marketing campaigns for SET’s leading shows over the last couple of years.

    Her earlier stints include Product Management assignments at BPL Cellular Ltd. and Colgate Palmolive Ind. Ltd. as well as four years at Lintas, where she was involved in developing launch strategies for some of Hindustan Lever’s products from its Home Care and Detergent businesses, informs the release.

    Reacting to her appointment, Jaipuria said, “The explosive growth in the kids’ entertainment space over the last few years, one of the most challenging audiences to understand and entertain, and the immense potential in the Nick brand – are some of the factors that have excited me lead Nick’s initiatives in India.”

    Microsoft, MTV to conduct global technology study

    MUMBAI: MTV and Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions have joined forces to conduct a global study into the impact of technology on today’s youth.

    The study, commissioned by MTV International (MTVNI) and supported by Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions, is being conducted with teens and young adults across nine countries – India, China, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, US and the UK. The study will examine the social impact of viral video, instant messaging, email, online social networks, mobile phones and on-line gaming.

    The research aims to understand:

    How today’s youth differ from their predecessors?

    What behaviour has technology altered / eclipsed?

    Do girls and boys use technology in the same way, for the same reasons?

    Is there a prime age of digital engagement?

    What factors dictate media platform and content choice?

    The new role of entertainment media and brands in 2007 and beyond.

    MTV Intl senior VP, international tesearch and planning Graham Saxton said, “The latest research into technology and teens has limited itself to understanding the habits of the early adopters or been obsessed by the technology itself. We decided to commission a study into understanding genuine social change.

    “By viewing technology within the wider context of young people’s lifestyles we aim to demystify the digital generation and provide tangible insights for ourselves and our clients to continue engaging our audience now and into the future.”

    Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions head of International Research Caroline Vogt said, “There is a lot of received wisdom surrounding youth and their technology uptake. This research aims to uncover the real motivations driving behaviours and understand the role technology is serving in the daily lives of youth today. ”

    The research began in August and full qualitative and quantitative results are expected by December 2006.

    Marva Smalls is MTV executive VP global inclusion strategy

    MUMBAI: US broadcaster MTV has announced that Marva Smalls has been named the company’s first executive VP global inclusion strategy.

    In this new position, Smalls will drive MTV’s ongoing efforts to champion a diverse, multicultural and inclusive workforce; and to develop the next generation of leaders across its worldwide brands.
    She will report to MTV chairman and CEO, Judy McGrath and will become a member of the company’s senior strategy team. Smalls also will retain her current responsibilities as Nickelodeon/MTVN kids and family group executive VP public affairs.

    “Diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion are core values for our company – they are at the heart of our business success, our programming strategy and our culture.” said McGrath. “There’s no person better suited than Marva to implement this vision across MTV Networks and help develop our next generation of leaders.”

    Smalls will work with the leadership of all MTV brands to champion these values, and to support an environment across the company where all employees can contribute to its success while achieving their own professional goals. Further, she will expand MTVN’s partnerships with leading outside organizations and exemplify MTVN’s diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion efforts worldwide.

    MTV has also announced that it is restructuring its day-to-day approach to diversity leadership, with the introduction of a new internal advisory team. Members of the team will reflect the leading business units of MTV Networks, and will have direct impact on diversity, multicultural and inclusion issues, including domestic and international Channel Management, Operations, Programming, Ad Sales, Corporate Responsibility, Creative, Communications, Human Resources and Learning & Development. Working closely with Smalls and the MTV Diversity Council, the advisory team will help set priorities, develop strategies and implement policies that advance MTV’s core values throughout every level of the company and beyond.

    As a result of the restructuring, the position of Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) has been eliminated and CDO Billy Dexter will be leaving the company.

    Mcgrath says, “Given our unique company culture with multiple stakeholders in our diversity efforts, we’ve come to realise that a team approach will best serve us in a global and now multi-platform environment. I have the greatest respect for Billy, and we thank him for his contributions to our diversity and inclusion mission.     MTV launches Nick block on Malaysian broadcaster TV9

    MUMBAI: MTV Asia has launched a Nickelodeon block on Malaysia’s terrestrial television channel, TV9. Branded as Nick di 9, it will reach over seven million households in Malaysia.

    Nickelodeon’s properties include SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Dubbed in Bahasa Melayu, Nick di 9 will be aired daily for three hours from 3pm to 6pm. Now kids in Malaysia can also enjoy these award-winning pre-school shows including Blue’s Clues and Dora the Explorer on Mondays to Thursday; while from Friday to Sundays, they can look forward to hilarious fun with Nicktoons like SpongeBob SquarePants and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.

    TV 9 is Malaysia’s first free-to-air channel to provide an uninterrupted kids’ block 7 days a week. With the tagline Dekat di Hati, TV9 is the Malay channel targeting to Malays who strongly associate themselves with positive values.

    MUMBAI: Viacom Inc.s has announced that MTV and Nickelodeon will become full labels under the Paramount Motion Picture Group (PMPG) as part of a new structure designed to deepen their already successful track record with their core target audiences.

    The two former production companies, which previously operated as on-lot producers, will now join several other labels under PMPG’s umbrella, including Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks SKG, Paramount Vantage and Paramount Classics.

    “After successful 12-year stints as production companies at Paramount, we are going to upgrade MTV and Nick to full movie label status,” says Viacom president & CEO Tom Freston.
    “This will expand their role at Paramount, will better leverage their considerable talent and marketing capabilities, and will allow for smoother day to day management on the lot with strong connections back to the core brands. This move plays perfectly to our company’s unique strengths and will surely increase the positive momentum that we’re seeing at Paramount under the leadership of Brad and his team.”

    “MTV and Nickelodeon are two of the strongest brands in entertainment reaching families and young adults,” says Paramount Pictures Corporation chairman & CEO Brad Grey. “We look forward to great films and a great future with these two new labels at the Paramount Motion Picture Group.”

Aversano will work on the lot, reporting to Paramount Pictures president Gail Berman. On all image- and brand-related matters for these pictures, he will also report to MTV Networks Music Group president Van Toffler and Nickelodeon and MTV Networks Kids and Family Group president Cyma Zarghami, states an official release.

    Aversano will assume his new position effective immediately, transitioning from his current role as an independent producer for Paramount Pictures. Prior to his producing deal with Paramount Pictures, Aversano spent more than seven years with producer Scott Rudin, most recently as president of Production, the release adds.

    “MTV and Nickelodeon are household names with audiences in every corner of the world,” says Aversano. “I’m excited to embark on this new challenge to continue bringing movies to the marketplace that utilize Viacom’s unique strengths in targeted demographics.”

    MTV Films and Nick Movies will continue to release films targeted to their respective demographics; with Nick Movies releasing animated and family films, and MTV Films focusing on comedies, documentaries, urban fare and horror films for teens and young adults.

    MUMBAI: Tata Sky, the direct-to-home platform from Tata and Star Group has added four regional channels to its special introductory package of Rs 200 per month (inclusive of taxes). The DTH platform also introduces the fifth interactive service Actve Games.

    The four channels include Star Ananda, DD Chandana, DD Gujarati and DD Punjabi.

    The DTH company has earlier introduced interactive services such as Actve Newsroom, Actve Khabar, Actve Star News and an on-screen Guide.

    Actve Games, this dedicated interactive gaming service will be available free to all its subscribers. The service provides access to play multiple interactive games on television.

    According to an official release, the gaming service caters to all ages with the option of playing six exciting interactive games including Aliens, Trance, Solitaire, Cubix, Bug Blaster and Speed Spell on their television screen.

    This service termed as ‘easy-to-use’ can be played with the help of the Tata Sky remote, eliminating the need of investing in additional hardware, states the release. Further, to maintain the enthusiasm levels of its audiences, Tata Sky will refresh the games periodically.

    Actve Star News service presents the viewer with four screens in a single window allowing him to choose from current news, headlines, top stories and special features, at the press of a button. The service also scrolls text, allowing the viewer to read the headlines, weather updates of 35 cities and a constant update on the stock market.

    Tata Sky CEO and MD Vikram Kaushik said, “Services such as Actve Games and Actve Star News are perfect examples of how television today has transformed into an interactive medium, allowing viewers the opportunity to do more than just watch television. This is only the beginning, we will continue to introduce innovative services to enhance the entertainment choices for our subscribers.”

    Tata Sky recently launched its satellite television service across 300 cities in India on 8 August. Only 15 days from the launch and the service has already penetrated 2000 cities,the company claims.

    At present, the platform has on offer channels includes Star, Sony, Discovery, Disney, MTV, NDTV, ESPN Star Sports, National Geographic, Eenadu, TV Today, Asianet and many more.
